made snowmobiling across the state sporadic but awesome for those who were ready to ride. The Video Project Year Two had to be postponed until March because of rain and ice. Hopefully we will have great riding conditions in March to make the video a reality this year.

Kudos to Tim Holtz, Randy Green and the members of the Glendale Lake Snowmobile Club for the completion of the trail to link Prince Gallitzin State Park to Black Moshannon State Park. This project took the cooperation and help of many people who volunteered their time and talents. It is truly a testament to what can be accomplished when everyone works together to reach a common goal.

DCNR also dedicated the Red Pine Plantation Snowmobile State trail improvement project Feb 16th. This twenty-six (26) mile trail received a $400,000 grant to improve the trail and install a culvert. Although it was designated as a “Snowmobile Trail” it is a multi-use trail for other recreational groups.

Many clubs have several members who go the extra mile to make the trails safe, sponsor fundraising events and spread the word about the benefits of club and PSSA membership. Please consider nominating members from your club for the Annual PSSA Awards. They will be due to the PSSA Secretary, Chick Walters, by March 21, 2018. (Information is on the website at www.pasnow.org) PSSA awards are the following: Snowmobiler of the Year Snowmobile Family of the Year Snowmobile Teen of the Year Snowmobile Dealer of the Year Forest/Government Official of

the Year

The nominee(s) must have been a PSSA member or a business member since January 2017. Government/Forest Officials do not have to be a member.

Several Regional Directors will finish their tenure as representatives of their region by the next Membership Meeting. Clubs should nominate the present Director or nominate someone else to represent their clubs on the Board. Regional Directors are very important to this organization. They are our contact with the grass roots members. The more the Board hears from them the better our organization can become. One e-mail from the clubs in the Region stating their nomination should be sent to Don Mosier, Executive Board member, by March 21, 2018.

Also the Executive Board will have two openings for nominations. Chick Walters and Janie French have terms ending this year. Janie will not run again. Nominations should be sent to James Wolfe by March 15. You will be given a questionnaire to answer. This along with your resume will be posted in the April Keystone Snowmobiler.

Recently the Board voted to continue the PowerSport Show this year. The Committee comprised of Travis Mathna, Arlene LaTourette, Chick Walters and Kathy Woolever will begin work on a budget for this event. Specific information will be made available as soon as dates etc. are determined.

The Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 9am at the Ramada Golf and Conference Center. This is the same place as last year. The Membership meeting will have an Open Forum for “Members Only” this year. If you cannot attend or want your ideas or comments presented by someone else you may send your comments, suggestions, concerns, and ideas to James Wolfe, Vice-President. We will discuss ideas to move the Association forward.

HASLETT, MI, January 22, 2018: You may have received a survey from a snowmobile manufacturer or supplier asking questions related to your snowmobiling

purchases and activities. You have probably also seen surveys from the ISMA Office asking questions such as:

• How many miles/Kilometers do you ride your snowmobile each year?

• When you snowmobile, do you trailer to your snowmobiling location or can you ride from your home/cabin?

• Do you snowmobile with friends, family, club members?

• What other outdoor recreation activities do you participate in?

• Etc.Thankfully many of you have answered

our surveys and questionnaires and have participated in similar questionnaires we have on our website and Facebook pages.

We conduct these surveys to gather information so that we can better serve you and better understand the changes in the activities/needs/habits of our customers. Your responses help tell your story to tourism bureaus and

government agencies who can work to make your experience a better one and expand or continue access to riding areas. Many land managers want to know where you go snowmobiling and why you go snowmobiling. Government agencies ask how many people ride in certain areas and they need to know the economic impact of snowmobiling in an area to award grants for improvements to trail systems or other infrastructure improvements.

We are happy to tell you that our surveys consistently show that people go snowmobiling to enjoy the outdoors, be with friends and family, go places where they could never go without a snowmobile, and have fun and simply enjoy nature.

Our survey results always show that snowmobilers are caring neighbors and great family members. They enjoy spending time with each other and generate a tremendous amount of economic impact for rural areas throughout the snowbelt.

Snowmobiling is a huge economic engine generating over $39 Billion of economic activity worldwide. Your expenditures generate millions of tax dollars and thousands of jobs in parts of the world that need jobs! Snowmobilers keep the economies of the snowbelt alive – so they can also service the summer, spring and fall customers. Mortgages need to be paid every month of the year!

Sometimes it may seem like we are a little nosey asking your gender, and your age. That helps us better understand how we are interacting and serving certain segments of the community and how the snowmobile community is changing and growing.

All of the surveys conducted by mail, websites, or social media are designed to better understand snowmobile use - so that we can create better products and tell your story to people that want to understand the importance of snowmobiling so that it can continue and expand to better serve you and help you enjoy snowmobiling.

So, the next time you receive a survey, please fill it out and turn it in. The information is vital in helping us all. Even if you took a survey in the past, times change, people change, and needs change. Go ahead and take it again this year!!! (Every year is a new year….)

SAFE TRAVELS

Hello from Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club. Just want to let everyone know what has been happening up on the mountain.

Well, most certainly not a lot of snowmobiling; that’s for sure. Mother Nature sure seems to have an ax to grind with Pennsylvania snowmobilers, to say the least. Other states in the northeastern corner of the U.S. have had some decent riding at times; but, they too have had some weeks at a time with no riding. The exception, of course, is Maine. Thank goodness for Maine!

Although, near the end of January there was a mid-week storm that did provide about two good days of riding, with a third day being just O.K. A few of us from the lodge did get to spend some time up north and get a little riding in. Thankfully, there was some base left to hold the snow for a few days. But, two days in the fifties, followed by heavy rain, it was over.

Well, it’s early February as I’m writing this so, hopefully, once you get your Keystoner in the mail, we will have gotten some snow, and more snow, and even more snow!

Every winter since I have been doing this article, I have always mentioned: “stop by the lodge and say hello if you happen to see smoke rising from the chimney.” However, should we ever get enough snow to ride this season, don’t worry about stopping… just enjoy the riding while you can! And, when you’re done riding, then stop by the lodge to say “Hello.”

Eight Marienville Trail Riders took advantage of the several inches of snow that fell on Wednesday February 7 and rode the loop. The loop is the 115 mile Allegheny National Forest Main Trail. The members started at the Marienville groomer barn and traveled in a counterclockwise direction. They left Marienville at 9:30 am and travelled to the Russell City store located on Route 66, 22 miles north. They proceeded to Bobs Trading Post, 21 miles north of Russell City, arriving at 11:30 just in time for a very tasty lunch.

After filling their gas tanks at Graybill’s the group proceeded to travel up Trail 1, and took trail 19 up to Jakes Rocks, overlooking the Kinzua Dam. This locally known Longhouse Trail is approximately 33 miles in length and the scenery is spectacular. Leaving Jakes Rocks, they headed toward Warren, Pa. crossing Rt 66. As you cross 66, you pass thru the Dollar Store parking lot where they took a break. And of course, some had to shop! The group then went west until riding thru Chapman Dam State Park. Along the trail, you will find five kiosks with a large map of the trail and individual maps that are available. These kiosks were installed by the Marienville Trail Riders Club. Leaving Chapman Dam, the group continued on to Kellettville, stopping at Cougar Bobs for a break and of course more food.

The trails were so nice, the group decided to travel to Mayburg and see the giant icebergs that were left from the flooding during the last warm spell. The group went up Trail 6, then 8. 11, 28 and onto freshly groomed Trail 12. They intersected with Trail 1, arriving back at Marienville at 4:30. Total miles traveled was 126 with lots of memories of fun, laughter and beautiful scenery. On Friday February 9. Marienville Trail Riders members Jerry Thornton. Jim Sofrano and Jim Anthony opened the gates to the first half of Trail 12 that intersects with the new Knox/Kane railroad bed. This first half of Trail 12 is known as the Marienville by-pass and had been closed because of flooding. Darn beavers! The trail opened on Friday, February 9 at 8 am. Mother Nature cooperated by dropping about a foot of snow the two days before the opening. This Trail 12 by-pass splits the ANF main Trail 1 in half, which allows snowmobilers many different trails to use. The two Jim’s and Jerry Thornton continued on to Trail 11 and removed a tree that was blocking that route.

The club members would like to especially thank Jenks Township supervisor Kevin Carter and groomer operator Joe Rodgers for having braved the cold the day before and removed

the ballards and railroad ties that were blocking the Knox/Kane Trail. That trail was opened on Friday also, and allows the groomer and snowmobilers another trail out of town without having to ride the roads. The club would like to remind snowmobilers that the trail may close if the weather does not cooperate. This trail was just resurfaced and the studded tracks may cause damage to the new Marienville All-Season Trail. Snowmobilers are asked to stay off the trail if the ballards are in place. The Marienville Trail Riders would also like to thank Forest County Commissioner Robert Snyder for having replaced a culvert that had washed out on the tracks during the last warming spell back in January. The club is also reminding riders to please abide by the 25 mile per hour speed limit in town and to keep your sleds under control. Our trails are sometimes multi-use trails and vehicles are permitted on some of the trails. As you ride out of Marienville on Trail 1 in either the east or west direction, you will find the trail groomed on the right side and you may encounter sleds coming back into town on the same side of the road. That is why you need to keep your sled at a proper speed.

If you enjoy snowmobiling please join one of the three clubs that are trying to keep

the trails groomed or volunteer your time. The three clubs are Forest County Club from Kellettville, the Highland PA Snow Seekers or the Marienville Trail Riders Club. The Marienville Club is co-sponsoring a St. Patrick’s Ham Dinner on Saturday, March 17 from 4-8. The dinner will be held at the MACA building and a Chinese auction is planned. Many thanks to groomer operators Joe Rodgers and Dan Stevenson from the Marienville Trail Riders, Terry Wood, Dale Weller, and Larry Martin from the Tionesta Snowmobile Club, and Roy Stillman, Bob Hearst, and Rich Hayes from the Highland PA Snow Seekers Club. Another way snowmobilers can help improve trails in Pennsylvania is to join a local club and also be a member of Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA).

Have you been out enjoying the snow? We have had some rideable snowfalls this winter in the Laurel Highlands although conditions were ranged from great to poor in the same day. It was mostly mid-week riding with meltdowns on the weekends. We have learned more about the riding tolerances of our members by the ratings they gave. Some gave 9 out of 10 an hour after someone else rated it a 5 out of 10. We do have a diverse group who enjoy every minute they can ride. Some prefer to wait for the cream of the crop bluebird days, and others toughed it out even in the rain. Any way you look at it we are a hardy group of people that know how to have a good time. We are hoping now for a late season deep snow or blizzard to keep things going.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his

burrow in Gobbler’s Knob on February 2, 2018, to let the world know whether or not we have 6 more weeks of winter. Guess What??? He has been doing this since 1886. He did see his shadow, which means winter will last until March 15, 2018. Phil is the “Prognosticator of Prognosticators”. We all know that Phil is a hoax. However, for this area of the state it is big business. Some of the schools close so everyone can join in on the fun. In fact, they use the school buses to transport the thousands of people who show up for the action. The local high school even hosts a dance where a Groundhog King and Queen are crowned.

Other outside news from our area: Latrobe,

Pa. is part of the Laurel Highlands. Starting this fall actor Tom Hanks will be starring in a movie as Mr. Fred Rogers. Anyone who has kids and watch PBS know who Mr. Rogers is. He was from Latrobe.

Here is some news from DCNR in

Harrisburg and I quote, “Starting January 1, 2018, the Recreation Section will now allow Snowmobile Safety Instructors to train not only youth operators within their applicable ranges, but it will also now be permitting Snowmobile Safety Instructors to train individuals sixteen years of age or older”. Guess what --- at LHSC we have been doing that for several decades. Our Safety Class is generally held the second weekend of November and is suitable for all ages.

Now for some interesting information about snowmobiling in Michigan, it costs $5.11 to groom 1 mile of trail in Michigan. Most of the drivers are volunteers. Maybe this is why a permit in Michigan costs $48. The Michigan website says the expense is for fuel, insurance, upkeep of equipment, wear & tear, etc. I guess this is why PSSA supports an increase to register a snowmobile in Pennsylvania. We only pay $20 for a 2-year period. That = $10/year. Our club recently applied for grant money for tourism and advertising. We were unsuccessful this year. If you want to know more, go to laurelhighlands.org/grants to find out how much money organizations in Westmoreland, Fayette, and Somerset Counties received in grants from the local hotel tax. This site will tell you how much they received and what it will be used for.

We really appreciate our area groomers

and the work they do! Forbes State Forest and Laurel Hill State Park Complex keep the trails open and running smoothly despite the roller coaster of temperatures we have been experiencing. Maple Summit and Rolling Ridge clubs have both gotten new grooming equipment to keep the neighboring trails great too. Rolling Ridge was generous to us recently by lending us a sled and drag to groom our racetrack with for the radar run. Without the DCNR and local club volunteers the trails would be unbearable due to the sled traffic. Next time you see a groomer, thank them for their time!

If you have ridden your snowmobile

this year find a snowmobile club or an active member and say “Thank You”. It’s their dedication that keeps the sport going. In our own club, we have 2 members who have been plowing the parking lot since the year 1972: Bob Ainsley and Bob Nichols. Thank You.

The next board meeting is March 8th at 8:00 PM in the clubhouse. We do not have any workdays scheduled for March. The next workday will be the Adopt-A-Highway. HASLETT, MI, February 13, 2018: This has been another busy couple of months at the ISMA office. Snow has fallen, and the trails are groomed for great riding. We have taken numerous

government officials out snowmobiling - introducing them to our great winter activity.

This year we are concentrating on taking Managers of Visitor and Convention Bureaus and Chambers of Commerce out riding to promote snowmobile tourism. We attend their winter board meetings, talk about the many benefits of snowmobiling, and take them for a short ride to experience the fun for themselves. So far it has been a great experience. We create ‘Miles of Smiles’ and it is so easy to do! People love getting out in the winter and snowmobiling. If they have never been snowmobiling or if it has been a while since they have ridden, we provide safety training first and bring them warm clothing and gear to use. The cute jackets, as we know do not work. They may look better for a photo op, but out on the trail, where it really matters, warmth is the key to an enjoyable ride.

I have spent lots of time in Washington DC, meeting with members of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), a newly reorganized business

group representing the outdoor recreation community -snowmobiles, boats, RVs, ATVs, Motorcycles, fishermen and women of all stripes, archery experts, horse people and more are represented. We meet to promote outdoor recreation activities and highlight our importance in today’s world. We promote, “Turning off your computer and getting outside.” (Bring your phone if you must – use it to take pictures!!)

The ORR meets with representatives from campgrounds, ski resorts, and trail managers and talk about the importance of having fun outdoors We highlight the economic importance of outdoor recreation, and we want the government folks to know we pay taxes and help maintain rural America. We expect great things to come from this new coalition Events are being planned for lawmakers in Washington DC and beyond promoting our businesses. Nationally, Outdoor Recreation generates over $885 billion in economic activity – providing lots of jobs and tax revenues. We are an economic engine.

Largest ever Poker Run!Greetings from the SnowRiders up in

McKean PA. We are in Erie County, the heart of the Snow Belt! As you may know Erie has been the top major city in the US for snowfall this year. Yes, we got dumped on again!!! And we still hold that record.

Our 24th Annual Poker Run was held on Sunday, January 7th this year. And what a success! We had 227 snowmobiles participate in this family fun event, our largest attendance ever! What a great time was had by all! It was a very cold blustery Sunday morning when we started. But it warmed up and everyone got a chance to ride on our groomed trails. Some groups went to New York, some went towards Ohio, some went on renegade trails, but most went on our freshly groomed trails. It is always enjoyable to see families riding as a group, friends gather together and the community support this event. Thanks to all who participated, those who donated items for door prizes, business sponsors, volunteers, and again our landowners! We had participants representing 5 States - Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois! Overall people from 57 different towns, and 24

Snowmobile Clubs. The sled breakdown: Arctic Cat: 89, Ski-Doo: 60, Polaris: 48. and Yamaha: 20. The highest winning Poker Hand was four 8s... We hope that you and your family can join us next year.

Woody’s, a very familiar company to snowmobilers, is about to embark on their 50th Anniversary. Woodys remains a family owned company in Michigan and is under the second generation of Musselman leadership. Founded by James Musselman and his partner, Woody Kozlow, Woody’s is now led by Robert and Mark Musselman.

Woody’s, is the trademarked name of International Engineering & Manufacturing’s private label traction devices. These devices have been used around the world on snowmobiles and off-road vehicles.

Long known by the snowmobile community, from ACSA to state snowmobile associations to clubs, Woody’s has always supported the grassroots of snowmobiling. They are regular contributors to fundraisers that support snowmobilers, donating products to benefit raffles and silent auctions.

Giving back to the community is a core belief that is shared by the employees of Woody’s. They believe in goodwill and take personal pride in their efforts. Because of their beliefs, they wanted to find a way to help their customers and the snowmobile community. After research, they chose Pink Ribbon Riders (PRR) as their charity of choice. PRR supports men and women in their fight with breast cancer. There have been many recipients throughout the year thru PRR. The

recipients receive VISA cards that can be used on anything from medical supplies to gas and parking – all charges that are incurred and not covered by insurance. The program assures complete confidentiality for all applicants.

Woody’s hosted the 8th Annual Charity Golf Outing in August 2017. Their first outing resulted in a contribution of almost $4,500 and doubled the second year. They have contributed over $75,000 over the last 7 years – and contributed nearly an additional $14,000 this year.

The employees show their beliefs by donating their personal time at the golf outing each year. Also involved in the Charity Golf Outing are distributors, vendors, and snowmobile racers. They strive to make the outing fun, by offering unique prizes, holding a silent auction as well as several other fun fundraising events at the outing. The Charity Gold Outing is concluded with a dinner, most often having a special guest speaker, a breast cancer survivor and past recipient of a PRR gift card.

Hats off to Woody’s from turning the part-time business into an international corporation and supporting charities that help their community and their consumers – snowmobilers! Thanks for all you do for organized snowmobiling! Happy Anniversary!!
