Spring Is On The Way!

We have had an unusually cold consistent winter this year, but spring is on the way. With that in mind, it will soon be time to get those spring chores done around the house. One area that has been neglected in Laurel Creek is the hedges growing BETWEEN houses or on the sides of houses. Our Governing Documents, Article IX, Restriction of Use, Architectural Control, Section 13, Walls, Fences and Hedges, Paragraph 3 states:

“No wall, fence, or hedge in excess of six (6) feet in height shall be erected or maintained on a side lot line from a point located three (3) feet back from the front exterior wall of the main residential structure, backward to the rear property line on a Lot. No rear fence, wall or hedge shall be more than (6) feet high.”

Since our neighborhood is getting older, trees and foliage is getting more mature and may need attention now that it hasn’t needed in times past. The lack of trimming of hedges between houses is also a safety concern. Where growth is thick, it is a hiding place for a potential predator. Let’s all keep our homes safe.

Our next scheduled HOA meeting is March 20, 2014 at the Mauna Loa Windfern MUD building at 6:30 p.m. All Homeowners are welcome to attend and have the opportunity to address the Board. The general Board Meeting agenda is as follows:

I. Call to Order General Session

Approval of Agenda Approval of Minutes II. Guests or Homeowners to Address the Board

III. Financial Report

IV. Old Business

V. New Business

VI. Executive Session a. Collection Report b. Attorney Status Report c. Deed Restriction Report VII. Adjournment

Gessner/West RoadCommercial DevelopmentBoard Members as well as Sterling Management have attempted to

contact Harris County Planning and Permits to find out what, if any, impact the construction to our north will have on our neighborhood. Numerous messages have been left with no one from their office returning our calls. If concerned residents would like to contact them, they can be reached at 713-956-3000. The more calls they receive, the better the chance of getting a response.

It appears that some attempts for flood control have been taken by the presence of a large retention pond at the site's east side adjacent to Windfern.

Chain Link Fence at the Basketball Park

With the installation of the new chain link fence by 5 Star Metals across from the Basketball Park, several Board Members met with Judson Wisner of ExxonMobil to verify if we are allowed to construct a new wooden fence in front of the chain link one.

He informed us that we cannot encroach on the pipeline easement and suggested that the Association commission a survey of the property line between our property and 5 Star Metals which we are in the process of obtaining bids for.

The only way to ensure that the plat review and survey, and marking of our property line and the easement are accurate is to hire a registered surveyor. Once the survey is completed and we know the answers, an update will be provided.

PortableBasketball Goals

To clarify any confusion regarding portable basketball goals in Laurel Creek, please refer to the Architectural Guidelines For Laurel Creek Section "L" - Line "J". Portable basketball goals may not be situated on a lot forward of the front building line or the side setback line on corner lots. Portable goals must be stored out of view from any street in the subdivision when not in use. Portable basketball goals are subject to the same requirements specified herein relating to color, materials and maintenance.

Prevent Colon Cancer In Less Than An HourRegular screenings for colon cancer can catch the deadly

disease before it even begins, according to doctors at Baylor College of Medicine.

"Colon cancer is known as the silent killer because symptoms are not present until it's too late," said Dr. Waqar Qureshi, professor of medicine and chief of endoscopy at Baylor.

Symptoms include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, weight loss or anemia. But if symptoms are apparent, then it¹s more than likely the cancer has already spread. Screening can catch precancerous growths at a time when life-saving treatments are still effective.

A colonoscopy is the most accurate way to find precancerous growths. A colonoscopy takes up to 20 minutes, and patients are sedated so most don't even remember the procedure.

"Usually screenings start at age 50 and continue every 10 years after that," said Qureshi. "However, if colon cancer runs in your family, screenings should be more frequent and begin sooner."

Olympic Fever Can Encourage Physical Activity In Children

According to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine, the Olympics are a great opportunity for children to learn about physical activity and goal setting.

According to Dr. Jorge Gomez, associate professor of pediatrics in the division of adolescent and sports medicine at Baylor, Olympic competitions will encourage children to do something fun and active.

"Research has shown that the strongest predictor of children remaining physically active into adulthood is having experiences of being active with their parents," said Gomez.

He offers the following tips for parents when watching the Olympic Games with their children:

• Point out that the athletes are participating because it¹s fun for them.

• Emphasize athletes are where they are after years of hard work.

• Discuss what it means to be a team player and to have good sportsmanship.

• Focus on the fact that the athletes are fit because they take care of themselves by eating well and exercising.

• While encouraging children to explore new activities, keep safety in mind.

WANT YOUR SKIN TO GLOW?"All Natural" Might Not Be The Way To Go

If you want your skin to glow, experts at Baylor College of Medicine say all natural products might not be the answer.

"Some people think that by going all natural with their skin care, that it will automatically be safer for their skin. That's not necessarily the case," said Dr. Rajani Katta, professor of dermatology at Baylor.

Whether it is cleansers or moisturizers, you can still have allergic reactions to the ingredients even if they are all natural or organic. Many natural ingredients, such as lavender extract or sandalwood oil, are actually types of fragrance additives. Even though these are natural fragrances, they can still cause the same type of allergic reactions. Other natural ingredients, such as tea tree oil, can also trigger allergic reactions.

Since it may be hard to pinpoint exactly what is causing irritation or allergic reactions just by reading labels, Katta suggests consulting a dermatologist.
