lattc encounter advisory group invitation
TRANSCRIPT
May 25, 2011
Dear Candidates:
You are cordially invited to be part of the LATTC Architecture and Environmental Design Discipline
advisory group
Green Workforce Division, Construction Design and Manufacturing Department and Architecture
Environmental Design Discipline offer a unique and innovative program in architecture technology.
We see architecture as a social mechanism that stimulates both the sensory system and the desire to
create by means of spatial languages and computer technologies. Our courses use nature templates to
facilitate the design of objects and places, life cycle strategies to document architecture drawings, federal
enterprise to align standards and LEED methods to use materials and methods of construction.
We also recognize the untapped talent in our communities and their visual intelligence capacity. We
provide them with nurturing environments where learning happens in the context of doing.
We are aware of the importance of the built environment and its place in society. A revolution in
architecture and environmental design has taken place. New tools such as GIS, CAD, Rapid Prototype, BIM
and 3D Modeling facilitate an unprecedented analytical and comprehensive means of looking at human-made
ecosystems. With these new lenses, we are able to see patterns and relationships we could not see before.
These new tools hold the promise to help us sustain ourselves on the planet. While some of these tools have
been used successfully in design and construction for many years, they now support a broad range of
additional applications, such as First Response, National Intelligence, operations Planning, Emergency
Management, American Disabilities Act, safety, space utilization and neighborhood planning.
The advisors‟ group plays a very important role in the growth and healthy transformation of the
program. Your recommendations affect our teaching delivery and outcomes. In addition, you will have a close
connection to our talented students‟ work pool.
I have worked with all of you in different ways and I think of you as „ad-hock‟ advisors for our program.
The idea is to run our studio as an “Atelier,” an educational environment that provides design services by the
community, for the community. All of you possess a strong passion for what you do and have different
backgrounds and spheres of knowledge, but all of you care about the Built Environment and human‟s impact
on it.
I envision our physical encounter, which will occur once a year, to be interesting and refreshing for
your personal goals.

one of the nine.
During this encounter, you will have the opportunity to physically review students‟ work, learn about
new tools, see the direction of the program and network with other professionals. During the year, your
commitment will be online as an e.advisor. The commitment can vary. It could be as little as reviewing a
student‟s work, providing a lecture or series of lectures, mentoring a student, hiring a student as volunteer or
providing internship or none of the above.
Many exciting projects and recognitions are happening in our program, college and district. In the next
two years we will move to the new Gold LEED building across the street. This new space will be very dynamic
and innovative. I attached an Schematic Design Copy for your review.
On June 13th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, we will have an “ENCOUNTER “ for our program and our first
advisory (under this new structure). The advisory portion will be only from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. You will have
the opportunity to look at students‟ work and talk to them about their projects. We will exhibit new CAD tools
like REVIT Sustainable and display designs for Green House Prototypes and Cargo Container Multifamily
Houses. You will also see projects like “When Science Meets Architecture,” SAVE LA Grant Videos,
Sustainable Landscape CAD Matrix for Operation and Maintenance, Green Idea House Landscape Designs,
as well as studies of existing LEED projects under Construction in BIM Revit, just to name a few. Each student
will have his or her own booth to display work. It will be a one to one relationship and network opportunity for
all. We will like to hear what you think and how we can improve our work.
We completed the framework for our site and still need to populate it, but you may look at offerings
and schools of thought:

In addition, in two years we will have a state of the art studio-laboratory which I have attached for you
to review. This new space will enhance our collaboration and partnership to build a better city through
participatory design and community serving community.
I look forward to hearing from you
