FLORIDA’S HISPANIC BUSINESS COMMUNITY! When I first started Latin Times Media and Magazine over 13 years ago, there were many people that did not think that there was a true bilingual audience in Florida, and that the idea of a Hispanic/Latino –bilingual media company was not a via-ble business. I remember it like it was yesterday that every time someone would say that to me I would feel more and more determined to prove them wrong, for me that was all the ammunition I needed in order to work extra hard just to make sure I proved them all wrong. Along this journey I found out that I had to learn to work really hard, and adapt my marketing strategies according to what was happening in the world.

Today’s entrepreneur has to wear so many hats, and each of those hats has to “fit” you. It’s tough, I’m not going to say it’s not tough, however if you have a dream –you should pursue it. For those of you in the midst of a struggle, let me just remind you are on a journey, and you may be closer to reaching your destination than you think, so don’t stop now and don’t slow down. Pray for strength, have courage and if you are afraid don’t let that stop you, just do it afraid. The most important piece of advice is to believe in yourself and

in your dream, even in the face of impossibilities, have faith that God will see you safely to your destination and that only he knows the best way to get you there, I can testify that there were many times that I saw absolutely no way to reach my goal, and yet I chose to trust the path that God had put me on, and he never let me down. If you work hard and be-lieve, he won’t let you down either.

DO YOU HAVE A DREAM? We want to tell YOUR STORY! Email me and tell me about it at: [email protected]

I hardly watch Television in Spanish, but you can find me switching from one Span-ish radio station to another in my car. I am usually with my children sitting at our local Colombian restaurant picking up Nuestra Ciudad Weston, a local community paper in Spanish and English that tells me what is going on in my city or checking to see what the latest Tweet is sent by Miamidiario.com. I am a concerned and dedicated voter, but I have never seen a candidate advertise in these local papers. Hopefully, this article will help campaigns change their mind.

I remember being 22 years old and being the campaign manager for a state house in-cumbent in a prominent Hispanic district in Tampa, Florida. There was a consultant who would come weekly to inform me what I needed to do in the week with our team. I still remember the media outlets in Spanish that he picked for the campaign were: La Gaceta Newspaper, Univision and a couple of radio stations in Spanish. Now, Tampa as well as the rest of Florida’s Hispanic popula-tion has grown and the media outlets have grown with it, but the question is: are con-sultants continuing to advise campaigns to use the same media outlets in Spanish that were used in 2002? Are the consultants ig-noring the rest of local community media outlets that currently exist? Do they not understand the value of the Hispanic media outlets and the local community papers in Spanish? Is it time to update the Rolodex?

It is likely that whoever attracts the Hispanic vote in this upcoming 2014 Florida guber-natorial election, will be the winner of the race. The objective of consultants should be to attract the vote of over 1.6 million Hispan-ic registered voters that exist in Florida. If you want to be the winner in your race, this is what you need to do to win the Hispanic vote:

1. Hire a Bilingual communications consultant.2. Do not ignore local com-

munity papers in Spanish.3. Advertisements in Spanish for Tele-vision is important, but very ex-pensive. Try radio and print also.4. Print papers reach different distribution points in Florida and have a longer shelf life Jolie Gonzalez, owner of Latin Times magazine and also a community leader who is currently the president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay, has a statewide publication where her strongest distribution points are Metro Orlando, Tam-pa Bay – I-4 Corridor, and South Florida. She distributes: 25,000 Print Editions. She also has her e-Magazine and Mobile maga-zine, same as print, but longer shelf life and typically ends up with 50,000-75,000 readers.

“It is important to build relationships with the media outlets targeting Hispanics, because we are small business owners, and we are spe-cializing in communicating and reaching this niche market in specific. If you are looking to reach and communicate with the Hispanic/Latino community -then you should be utiliz-ing the media tools that they read.” Jolie said.

Albert Einstein once said: “Insanity is do-ing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.” The strategy that is being done over and over again is not working, but could change if campaigns hire a good consultant who knows the Hispanic leaders, the media outlets in Spanish and their community. It is time to stop ignoring the Hispanic media outlets.

How to win the Hispanic voteBy Evelyn Perez-Verdia

percent to more than $539 billion

Meet Guillermo BetancourtLatin Times Magazine: How did you get started in your career as a CPA?Guillermo: My parents encouraged me to enter a pro-fession where my math and numbers aptitude would be best used. I have always enjoyed working with num-bers. In college I found calculus and trigonometry to be a challenge and loved the problem solving aspect of the subjects.

Latin Times Magazine: What kind of people can you help with your services?Guillermo: My tax services and for those needed pro-fessional services. My clients include students, single and joint filers ranging from a simple to complex tax returns. Also, my accounting and consulting services are for those small to medium size business owners that need professional business management and adviso-ry services. I am proud to have business ranging from small businesses to those with nearly $10 million in sales, each receiving the same level of professionalism.

Latin Times Magazine: What is the difference between a CPA and a tax preparing service like Liberty Tax or HR Block?Guillermo: CPAs are governed by strict licensing re-quirements and must adhere to professional code of ethics and conduct. To obtain a CPA license it is a re-quirement to complete 150 semester hours of education and pass the rigorous uniform CPA exam administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accoun-tant (AICPA). Furthermore, as a licensed professional we are required to have 80 hours of continuing every two years. These hours include taxation, accounting and auditing. A CPA is prepared to offer professional tax services ranging from simple to complex returns ensur-ing that each return prepared is accurate. A seasonal tax preparer may not have advanced training or education. Most likely they are seasonal employees trained prepare only basic returns.

Last year in the State of Florida there were over 250 schools that were involved in this campaign, Celebratemydrive.com. 100 High Schools with the most commit-ments will be awarded a total of $3.25 million in grants. Two (2)

schools will receive a $100,000 grand and a Grand Prize concert by a chart-topping musical artist group. Eight (8) schools will receive a $100,000 grant, and the re-maining 90 schools will receive a $25,000 grant. This is a serious commitment to our communities, the families and nation’s children.

Latin Times: How can your services help people? Emilio Morales: We protect them and their family, retirement planning, educa-tion planning for college and much more.

Latin Times: How do you like your Cuban Sandwich? Emilio Morales: Hot and pressed good with garlic and REAL Pernil.

Latin Times: Who is a hero/role model that you admire (living or deceased) and why do you admire them? Emilio Morales: With no question this would be my parents, I stopped work for a period of time and put my office at home in order to take care of my mother for a period of 4 years until she passed away. Ingrid Hoffmann (www.in-gridhoffmann.com), profes-sional eater and host Top Chef Estrellas (Telemundo), Simply Delicioso (Cooking Channel) and Delicioso (Univision) is passionate about food and en-tertaining and spends each day sharing her enthusiasm and talent with an international audience. Her goal is to spread the joy of cooking to her many followers via her own cook-ware line, cookbooks and the media. 2014 promises to be a year of new challenges for In-grid, as she sets out to launch her food brand, which will be available in fall 2014 and focus-es on easy, delicious and healthy meal solutions for the family.

Ingrid’s fascination with food, cooking and style began as a lit-tle girl. She started cooking with her mother, a Cordon Bleu chef, at such a young age that she needed a stool to reach the stove. She discovered not only a love of cooking, but a flair for enter-taining, and in no time devel-oped her own distinctive style.

E X C L U S I V E I N T E R V I E W !Latin Times Magazine: Thank you for taking the time to speak with Latin Times! Please tell us about yourself. Ingrid Hoffman: Columbia born, raised in the Caribbean, grew up in my mother’s kitchen, and my mother started her ca-tering company when I was very little, she started it first from my house and then eventually bought a restaurant, and so I have always been in the food in-dustry, I grew up in a restaurant and it’s what I live and breathe, eating is my passion, more than cooking, eating is my passion, and that is where it comes from!

Florida’s Top Latino ChefsLatin Times Magazine: What is your favorite dish to make, and what is your favorite dish to eat?Ingrid Hoffman: It really is everything, if I would have to pick something for sentimen-tal reasons, I would have to say that it’s my dad’s brandied shrimp. It’s something that connects me to him. To eat and make –for emotional rea-sons, not for any other reasons.

Latin Times Magazine: What has been your biggest obstacle, and how did you overcomeIngrid Hoffman: What is my biggest challenges, more than anything, people in America people thought that Mexi-can Food was the only Latin Food, and I think that was an obstacle because I was like, lis-ten there is different types of Latin Foods, and I make food from 22 countries including Spain, Mexico, Columbia, and everywhere, and then I make it my own, and I think that people didn’t understand that in the beginning. My name was also an obstacle, people would say you are not Latin!

I was the first Latin on an English channel and that too was a huge challenge as well.

Latin Times Magazine: So tell me what about the Cuban Sandwich, do you know how to make a Cuban Sandwich?Ingrid Hoffman: I LOVE Cuban Sandwich, and I make a mean one, and of course I do my own spe-cial twist! A Cuban Sand-wich with an Ingrid Twist!

Latin Times Magazine: When did you know you wanted to be a chef?Doreen Colondres: I studied marketing and public relations first and I worked in that field for a few years but food was always my hobby since I was very little. I was always cooking for friends and sending them emails with markets and restaurants I visited around the world. But about 7 years ago I realized that to be happy you need to do what you love, you have to fight for your dreams and wake up every day loving what you do in life because it’s all about passion. I did some TV in the past so I knew I wanted to go back, but it was an idea from my friend and amazing professional photographer Omar Cruz who told me “why you don’t do on TV, what you do with me and all your friends all the time, there is no one like you on tv”. I was shocked at the beginning but it only took me a month to create La Cocina No Muerde. That’s how I started sharing my stories and recipes with new friends around the world. Then, I knew I had to go back to school to become a professional cook!

Latin Times Magazine: What advice can you give to young aspiring Chefs?Doreen Colondres: The best advice I could give would be to respect the ingredients, never stop studying and never stop growing in your career and travel as much as you can. If you can’t travel read, read and read so you really understand any type cuisine before cooking it and “selling” it as “x or y” country. This world is huge, there are no limits and there is an opportunity for each talented and creative person, work hard and do it!

Latin Times Magazine: When did you know you wanted to be a chef?Chef Tony Duen: Since I was 11 year old, that was the first time I cooked a full meal for my family. Since then I have been cooking and traveling. Learning everything that I could along the way with different chefs and styles.

Latin Times Magazine: What is your favorite dish to create? Chef Tony Duen: I like Chinese cuisine with a Latin fusion, with so many different styles. Plus I like to use the smoking system that brings out new flavors and styles.

Latin Times Magazine: Who is YOUR favorite Latino Chef? Chef Tony Duen: Chef Jose Garces. When I saw him on Iron Chef, it gave me more will to continue my career and aim to get to the top.

Latin Times Magazine: Do you know how to make a Cuban Sandwich?Chef Tony Duen: The Cuban Sandwich is my favorite sandwich, the classic Cuban sandwich!

Latin Times Magazine: When did you know you wanted to be a chef?Oscar Funez: It is interesting because my dream was not being a chef, I wanted to be a lawyer. I was in college when I decided to quit my career and move to this country without knowing absolutely anything about food besides what my mother had taught me. When I moved to Tampa from Los Angeles, I started working at The Columbia Restaurant then I knew that my real career was to be a chef because I felt the passion for this.

Latin Times Magazine: What is your most favorite dish to create?Oscar Funez: In my country we have a traditional dish, it is called "Sopa de caracol " which is sea snail with bananas, yucca or cassava, platanos and coconut milk so that's my favorite dish to make because it reminds me of home.

Latin Times Magazine: Who is YOUR favorite Latino Chef? Oscar Funez: I could say that my boss Chef Jerry Bayona, he has taught me how to discover flavors, techniques and the art of cooking that I didn't know existed, I am who I am now, because of him.

Latin Times Magazine: Tell us about your family, and your backgroundFernando Rosado: I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico of a Puerto Rican father and my mother is originally from Spain. Growing up was fun since I was the fourth out of 5 children. My mother taught cooking classes and I loved pitching in and helping out. We grew up in an upper class family, so I was exposed to great restaurants. My mother’s side of the family was all pride in their cooking and they all catered parties. My grandmother taught me how to cook the best flan in the world when I was 10 years old!

Church, where did “Church” originate? What did Yeshua (Jesus) mean when he said “You shall do these things but greater?” Why is the Church today weak and lacking the supernatural power of God? These questions should be asked of the church today and Pastors should be challenged by these questions. What is a big concern is that some Churchea have been compromising the word of God, leaving out the fun-damental roots of God’s true plan for his church. To under-stand what the church actually is you must dig deep into its roots from where it originated. Yeshua (Jesus) said to Peter in Mathew 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Peter was one of Yeshua’s (Jesus’) most faithful Dis-ciple even though he did deny him, he repented and it was on him that the church was founded.

The true and original church was established through the Disciples of Yeshua Hamashiach (Jesus Christ) through the Jews first then the gentiles, they gathered in homes, places where they would break bread and fellowship, miracles were performed daily, signs and wonders. All being taught through testimony of each disciple and their relationship with Jesus Christ. It is by the word of their testimony that people both Jew and Gentile were won to Christ.

The Church today has become a show of words so often given

to tickle the ears of its members, to become a place without disci-pleship but to overlook and miss the fundamental essentials that the church was based on, it’s Hebrew roots. Every one of the disciples walked in the constant flow of the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, sadly enough the church has become dead, powerless, stag-nate, and blind. Who was the foundation of the church, was it Jesus Christ, it was Peter, his name meaning The Rock. Peter was a Hebrew Fisherman who was chosen with the other disciples to spread the message of our savior throughout the world, it wasn’t the gentiles, it all started with the Jews, yes the church’s roots, the very foundation is the inheritance of what we are grafted into. Romans 11:17 says...” But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree.” You see God brought us back into our inheritance of the blessings, the roots, and the essence of the Hebrew heritage.

This deception all began in the Roman Catholic Church where as many truths were taken out and changed for the convenience of their teaching of Christianity. The great reformation beginning with Martin Luther once believed that the churches true roots must be maintained but eventually through Calvin and other reformist it was changed by making the Jews the enemy of the church and blaming them for Christ’s death, therefore the deception began not only through the Roman Catholic Church but all the Organized Churches that broke away from the Catholic Church. Jesus never once said to abolish his people, he never turned from his roots as a Jew, he never said that after him there was no need to adhere to the knowledge of the Hebrew people, in fact he stated “"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill..” (Matthew 5:17). Jesus also stated that he was going to return to the same place he ascended to the father. In reality all the promises to Israel remain in place and the greatest thing about this is now through Jesus we have the right to be a part of this inheritance. In these times there are Messianic Jews who are Jews who have accepted Jesus as their savior and Messiah.

ACTOR RICARDO CHAVEZ LANZA

LIBRO Por Gabriela Guerrero

¿A dónde voy?

Tiempo LibreIn honor of Hispanic Heritage Month 2014, the Straz Center for the Performing Arts Sat, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Morsani Hall.

This Cuban-born but Miami-based en-semble creates a joyous mix of traditional Cuban timba with classical training and an ear for new sounds emerging in the U.S. Their “addictive, rhythmic concoc-tion” (Creative Loafing Charlotte) of horns, percussion, guitars and warm, chocolatey vocals emerges from a deep enthusiasm for music’s ability to free the spirit. Raised during Castro’s Cuba, the members of Tiempo Libre clandestinely channeled Miami radio stations after hours, and, in the nights of their youth, absorbed the forbid-den sounds of Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and Gloria Estefan. Electrifying and supremely talented, Tiem-po Libre brings a hip-shaking, foot-tapping, hand-clapping hybrid of the heat of Havana & Miami and the cool tones of American funk, jazz and R&B. Tickets: 813.229.STAR.
