Installation

1. Double click on the executable file and choose a destination folder where the installation files will be extracted. Any folder is fine since you will delete these files later. In Figure 1: Extract Screen, I have chosen “C:\Temp”.

2. Click “Install” and ProTeXt will extract itself.

3. After the extraction is complete, navigate to the temporary ProTeXt folder and double click the Setup.exe file.

4. Select the language you would like to work with and click Next (See Figure 2: ProTeXt Installation). At this point a pdf document entitled, “The Quickest Way to a TEX System based on MiKTEX, TEXnicCenter, Ghostscript and GSview” will load.

ProTeXt Version 2.1ProTeXt Version 2.1 Introduction ProTeXt is a pdf-driven aid to installing MiKTeX, TeXnicCenter, Ghostscript, and GSView. Each of these software are found on the LaTeX, WinEdt DVD, and can be installed individually. This guide is based on installing each of them using ProTeXt.

MiKTeX MiKTeX is an up-to-date TeX implementation for the Windows operating system. http://miktex.org/

TeXnicCenter TeXnicCenter is a feature rich integrated development environment (IDE) for developing LaTeX-documents on Microsoft Windows. http://www.toolscenter.org/

Ghostscript Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript (TM) language and the Adobe Portable Document Format. http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/GPL/index.htm

GSView GSview is a graphical interface for Ghostscript. http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.htm

Figure 5: MiKTeX Settings

MiKTeX installation 1. Navigate to page 8 in the pdf and e “Click here to

install MiKTeX” . This will start the MiKTeX installation (See Figure 3: MiKTeX Installation Link).

2. Accept the copying conditions (See Figure 4: Copying Conditions) and follow the installation screens. For a complete installation, the only screen you have to change anything on is the screen that has the “Preferred Paper”. The default is “A4” and in Figure 5: MiKTeX Settings, I have chosen “Letter” option.

3. After the Settings screen the installer will display your settings. Clicking “Start” begin the installation. This part of the installation may take a long time, so go watch a movie or something. When it is finished, the “Next” button will be clickable and the Intalling and Overall progress bars will be greyed. When you finish, you will be taken back to the pdf file.

All the screen shots are located on the DVD in “<DVD>\Screen Shots\2 - MiKTeX Installation” Figure 4: Copying Conditions

TeXnicCenter Installation 1. The pdf then installs TeXnicCenter, a free TeX

editor which may be all you need. If you want WinEdt instead, skip these instructions and follow the instructions for WinEdt, later in this document (I personally prefer WinEdt).

2. Follow the installation dialog boxes. 3. When TeXnicCenter is finished being installed, it

needs to be configured by running it for the first time.

All the screen shots are located on the DVD in “<DVD>\Screen Shots\3 - TeXnicCenter Installation”

Page 3: LaTeX Software Installation Guide

Configuring TeXnicCenter 1. Run TeXnicCenter. The first screen is the Tip of

the Day screen, after that TeXnicCenter will take you through setting up the rest.

2. The first confusing screen is the “Distribution Directory” screen (shown to the left). This screen expects the directory in which the MiKTeX executable files are stored. In the default configuration this will be located at: “C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\miktex\bin\”

3. On the next two screens the entries are optional. You may want to point to Adobe Acrobat Reader on the PDF Viewer screen.

4. After those screens, and after you finish loading TeXnicCenter, you will return to the ProTeXt pdf installation guide.

All the screen shots are located on the DVD in “<DVD>\Screen Shots\4 - TeXnicCenter Configuration”

Ghostscript Installation 1. On page 13 of the pdf installation guide is the link

to install Ghostscript. 2. Simply click through the setup, taking the defaults

given. 3. When this is finished, return to the pdf installation

guide once again. All the screen shots are located on the DVD in “<DVD>\Screen Shots\5 - Ghostscript Installation”

Installing GSview 17. To install GSview, click on the link on page 14 and

follow the instructions. This install, like installing Ghostscript, is very straight-forward.

All the screen shots are located on the DVD in “<DVD>\Screen Shots\6 - GSview Installation”

Congratulations, you are now finished with ProTeXt.Congratulations, you are now finished with ProTeXt.

Install WinEdtInstall WinEdt Introduction WinEdt is widely used as a front-end for compilers and typesetting systems, such as TeX or HTML. WinEdt's highlighting schemes can be customized for different modes and its spell checking functionality supports multi-lingual setups, with dictionaries (word-lists) for many languages available for downloading from WinEdt's Community Site. Cost of a personal license (as of March 29, 2008) is $30.00 (and in my opinion, well worth it).

File: <CD>\WinEdt v5.5\winedt55.exe

Installation 1. WinEdt’s installation is also straight forward. Double

click on the winedt55.exe installation file on the DVD and follow the screens. It is fine to take the defaults.

2. The last screen of the install has a “Launch WinEdt” checkbox. Launch WinEdt and follow through the configuration screen (beginning screen shown).

Install JabRefInstall JabRef Introduction JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager. The native file format used by JabRef is BibTeX, the standard LaTeX bibliography format. JabRef runs on the Java VM (version 1.5 or newer).

File: <CD>\JabRef v2.3.1\JabRef-2.3.1-Setup.exe

Installation 1. You must first have Java v1.5 (or newer) installed on your system. If you do not already

have Java installed, first install it, then return to this point. 2. Simply follow the screens. 3. For some reason, the launch executable does not work correctly. Therefore, navigate to the

JabRef directory created during installation (C:\Program Files\JabRef), right click on the JabRef-2.3.1.jar file and send to the desktop, creating a shortcut. This is what you will use to launch JabRef.
