Solar Power to the Rescue on Mission Creek Solar powered livestock watering system delivers water in freezing weather—saves cattle.

Three years in the making, this project was installed in the fall of 2012. The landowner had his doubts whether the solar-powered system and wireless shut-off valves would work in freezing weather. After a cold snap in January 2013, he is pleased—it works!

Those are the words the Independent Scientific Review Panel used to describe the District’s proposal to continue projects in Lapwai Creek. In the spring of 2013, District staff teamed together to write a complete proposal outlining and detailing project steps in the Lawai watershed to continue work efforts. The proposal was a huge success and earned a qualified ranking from the Panel!

Other ProjectsIn the blustery winter of 2013, field technicians zipped up their coats and rolled up their sleeves to save Tom Beall Bridge from washing away. Lapwai Creek’s Tom Beall Bridge was ready to reach its demise before the District along with Nez Perce County, stepped in to stabilize the banks from falling into the creek-thus saving the bridge from washing out.
