From LAF President Bill Main, Hon. ASLAI am pleased to report to you that the Landscape Architecture Foundation experienced an exceptional year in 2013, making exciting and significant progress in research, scholarship, and leadership.

Twenty-three new case studies for the Landscape Performance Series were completed through the innovative Case Study Investigation (CSI) program. CSI brings faculty, students, and participating firms together to do post-occupancy studies of exemplary landscape projects. The Landscape Performance Series is providing important new processes and ways of thinking for the profession and for future projects.

The Olmsted Scholars Program continues to recognize and support truly outstanding and inspiring future leaders. Sixty-seven landscape architecture programs participated in 2013. Meeting the nominees and hearing their stories is an experience that deeply touches everyone involved and builds faith in our future. This is a program that changes lives.

Transformative initiatives like these are only possible when we join forces and work together. The Landscape Architecture Foundation has successfully pooled our contributions, big and small, financial and personal, and channeled them artfully into the exciting programs described throughout this annual report.

Executive Director Barbara Deutsch has brought together an exceptional staff and a creative and committed Board of Directors. Together, they have dedicated themselves to improving the world around us by leveraging the efforts of landscape architects. It has been a rare honor and privilege to serve as President of the Landscape Architecture Foundation. be a guidebook on metrics and methods for evaluating performance, expected in mid-2014.

To accelerate the adoption of landscape performance in design education, LAF launched a two-year $25,000 teaching grant initiative, offering five $2,500 mini-grants to select university faculty for the Spring 2014. Participants will work with LAF to develop and test models for integrating landscape performance into standard landscape architecture course offerings.

Research is a key part LAF’s strategy to increase our collective capacity to achieve sustainability through landscape architecture. Since 1986, LAF has invested over $2.1 million in research initiatives.

Landscape Performance SeriesThe Landscape Performance Series (LPS) is an online interactive set of resources to evaluate performance, share best practices, and make the case for sustainable landscape solutions. This award-winning platform showcases evidence-based environmental, social, and economic benefits of landscape, sharing information and innovations from design research, academia, and professional practice.

Awareness and use of the LPS has increased steadily, with 36,000 unique visitors and nearly 200,000 pageviews in 2013. LAF presented the LPS to 1,400 professionals at 50 venues and developed a half-day workshop on the process of evaluating performance to show impact.

In March, LAF awarded $22,500 to researchers from Utah State, Kansas State and Temple Universities to catalog and analyze the metrics and methods in first 60 LPS Case Study Briefs and make recommendations to improve the rigor of future case studies. The product will

The Case Study Investigation (CSI) program is a unique research collaboration that matches LAF-funded faculty-student research teams with leading practitioners to document the benefits of exemplary high-performing landscape projects. Teams develop methods to quantify environmental, economic and social benefits and produce Case Study Briefs for LAF’s Landscape Performance Series.

Nine faculty Research Fellows, 12 student Research Assistants, and over 20 design firm liaisons participated in the 2013 CSI program to evaluate and document the performance of 24 projects, from Detroit’s Milliken State Park to private residences in Aspen to the 1,000-acre Napa River Flood Protection Project. [See p. 7]

The CSI program is highly collaborative with the goal of better integrating the innovative work being done by academia and practice to advance our knowledge of landscape performance. The program also provides participants much-needed research and professional development opportunities.

By investing in this research, LAF hopes that CSI can be a key impetus in moving the landscape architecture profession toward designing every project with specific performance objectives, routinely collecting performance data, and integrating landscape performance in design education.

Olmsted Scholars ProgramLAF’s Olmsted Scholars Program is the premier national award and recognition program for landscape architecture students. The program recognizes and supports students with exceptional leadership potential, and in 2013 LAF added a separate $15,000 award for undergraduates.

Leann Andrews, University of Washington, received the $25,000 graduate prize and plans to use it to return to Lima, Peru to implement her certificate capstone project: a community gardening and ecological restoration initiative in a distressed informal ‘slum’ community.

McKenzie Wilhelm, Ohio State University, is the first to receive the new $15,000 undergraduate award and plans to use it to travel to Bristol Bay and the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska to research and develop speculative designs for alternative mining practices and interventions to enhance and protect salmon habitat.

Also honored were six national finalists, who each receive a $1,000 award. An independent jury of leaders in the landscape architecture profession selected the winners and finalists from a group of 39 graduate and 28 undergraduate students who were nominated as Olmsted Scholars by their faculty.

In November, 37 of the scholars attended a series of events in Boston, including a luncheon, office tours, and LAF’s 28th Annual Benefit where they were honored during a special ceremony. These future leaders of the profession form a growing community of 243 past and present Olmsted Scholars.

Leadership3 Since its founding in 1966 by leading landscape architects of the day, LAF has worked to strengthen the profession and collaborate with leaders in practice, academia, and industry to provide thought leadership in designing sustainable landscape solutions. LAF also supports the development of emerging student leaders and young professionals.

XTreme LAXTreme LA is a creative challenge for the design leaders of tomorrow. This unique professional development program teams select young professionals and students with prominent landscape architects for an intense two-day charrette, in which participants develop design solutions for a significant local or regional challenge in a host city.

The fifth XTreme LA Challenge was the most critical and complex to date. Held on April 3, 2013 at the University of California, Berkeley, participants were asked to develop design strategies and responses to address the impacts of projected sea level rise in the San Francisco Bay area around Berkeley Pier.

Thirteen young professionals, who were identified by their firms as rising leaders, came from around the country to work with 15 students from the UC Berkeley graduate

program in landscape architecture under two distinguished team leaders: Kevin Conger, President and CEO of CMG Landscape Architecture, and Brian Jencek, Managing & Design Principal at Hargreaves Associates San Francisco.

The two teams worked together to create a common kit of parts, then divided to develop two radically different proposals: “Soft and Safe” and “Pierscape.” Presentation of these approaches spurred lively conversation among the policy-makers, designers, and scientists in attendance.

Xtreme LA was developed by Landscape Forms and is co-sponsored by LAF. In addition to fostering critical thinking, team building, and creative expression, the program provides a unique opportunity for intergenerational professional development.

Mikus and a guest will spend a full day touring sustainable sites in Seattle and one full day on Bainbridge Island.

“Seattle is one of the top destinations for designers and design students, so this is a very welcome opportunity to experience the city under the guidance of the city’s top landscape architects!” said Mikus. “I have told other students how I won the sweepstakes, but still don’t believe it myself.”

Miko Mikus learns that he won the sweepstakes from LAF Board President Bill Main.

2012 sweepstakes winner Ashley Brenden (second from right) toured five MVVA-designed sites in New York City with senior designers from the firm.

“ We cannot thank LAF and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) enough for the wonderful trip to NYC! The tour day with team members from MVVA was certainly one we will never forget. Scott and I got to see first-hand how these projects contribute to a sustainable social and environmental network. We are so grateful for the time Michael Van Valkenburgh, Laura Solano, Steve Noone, Matt Urbanski, Jason Siebenmorgen, and Marisa Rodriguez spent with us.”
