HFHS Community,

I would like to extend my gratitude to every community member who contributed to making the 2018-19 school year such a success. In particular I would like to thank the class of 2019 whose 165 graduates made them the largest graduating class in school history. These young men and women have left behind a legacy of positive leadership, strong scholarship, and service to God that will not soon be forgotten at Holy Family.

If you visit Holy Family this summer, you will see that construction activity has almost completely consumed our campus. The addition of 34,000 square feet of new space for classrooms, an auxiliary gym, a fitness center, expanded locker rooms and a larger Commons will give the school room to absorb the rapid growth it has experienced during the last few years. In addition to that project, the east side of the building is also being substantially renovated. The Counseling Center is being redesigned so we can provide our students with far more individualized attention from both guidance counseling and college counseling. The Music area will also be expanded, giving our students room to practice in small groups and allow us to hold more than one music class at a time. As if this wasn’t enough construction work, we will also be replacing the floor in the existing gym, converting one of the science labs into a chemistry room, and installing a new backstop on the softball field. All the snow and rain we experienced this winter and spring set our construction schedule back some, but the contractors are working diligently to complete the project on time. When all is said and done, there will be over 60,000 square feet of new or renovated facilities on our campus. I look forward to welcoming our students to the expanded campus this fall and especially hope that all of our alumni will return in October for Homecoming to see the school’s new look!

Pax Christi,

Matt HauptlyPrincipal - Holy Family High School

GRADUATION 2019 | 8

Valedictorian& Salutatorian

Ceili Opp '19 Valedictorian

Hello and welcome to the graduation of Holy Family’s Class of 2019. First, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped this graduating class get to where we are today. Mr. Hauptly and the rest of the faculty, thank you for pushing us as students, Catholics, and young members of society. The teachers here have not only taught us how to solve differential equations and how to rhetorically analyze every movie we watch, but they’ve provided valuable lessons, things that we wouldn’t be able to learn in the classroom of any other school. How to be active and intelligent members of our society while maintaining our religion and beliefs. How to grow as individuals who seek challenges and experiences that lead us out of our comfort zone. And finally, how to become the people capable of bringing good into the world. There is no lesson greater than this and the class of 2019 could not have done it without you.

To our parents and families, your children have become knowledgeable, gracious, and sincere young men and women. As you know, high school has come and gone in the blink of an eye, but we will never forget how much you have sacrificed for us. When we have spent countless nights studying, trying to balance school, extracurriculars, and social lives, you have supported our endeavors and have endured our hardships. You were there for our 2 AM breakdowns but also some of the greatest moments of our lives. None of this has gone unnoticed. And I promise you, we are going to miss you next year so much. And not just because some of us are going to have to learn how to do laundry. On this day, as we prepare to enter the world, we are reminded how much we respect you, and how much we appreciate all of your hard work and generosity. We could not be here today without your patience and unconditional love.

The unique opportunities to see Christ in all people and the incredible atmosphere of family at Holy Family have shaped us into the people we are today and will help us to shape the lives of all others we encounter as we continue on our journey. Holy Family faculty not only teaches students to see Christ in everyone, but leads by example by incorporating it into their own lives and inviting students to do the same. Because of who we have become at this school we will be able to bring the light of Christ into the world in whatever path we take.

Alexia Simonton '19 Salutatorian

Good morning faculty and staff, family, friends, those here to celebrate and support, and of course, my fellow graduates. Today is the day we’ve been waiting for since the moment we stepped in these doors. And as easy as it is to focus on all of the special moments we will have today, it would mean nothing without the people we’ve met and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. As author Linda Staten said, “The true worth of your travels lies not just in where you’ve come to be, but in who you became along the way. In the past few years, we transformed into confident young men and women who sit before you as leaders of this school and our communities who embody the values Holy Family strives to instill in every student. Class of 2019, I’m so proud of the individuals and class we’ve become. So today, I hope to provide you with some lessons we’ve learned along our High School Journey, to make sense of our shared experience and hopefully provide some insight on

the uncertainty of the future.

Lesson 1: Fish are friends, not food. Although this quotation from Finding Nemo is seemingly simple, it was a very important lesson for all of us. People that aren’t like us, who have different beliefs, backgrounds, and experiences than we do, are not our enemies. Instead, they can and should be our friends.

Lesson 2: Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart. This Winnie the Pooh saying has a lot of truth to it, even as young adults. The smile from someone in the hallway, a quick good luck before a test, a friend’s support at a meaningful event. The small moments in daily like are truly meaningful.

Lesson 3: Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. Although some of us discovered our passions in the classroom, and some of us discovered things we definitely don’t care to pursue in the future, so much of the incredible Holy Family experience stemmed from a belief that faith, hope, and love set our souls on fire. We discovered an immense joy in reconciling ourselves with God and each other and found peace in letting God guide us.

Lesson 4: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” These are wise words from Forrest Gump, and ones that we experienced firsthand in our Senior Retreat. Life is unpredictable, but change and new experiences can be very, very good.

Lesson 5: Just Keep Swimming and Fail Faster. Failure is inevitable, things won’t always be easy, but instead of giving up, persevere, work hard, and have fun in the process. Our experience in the classrooms was incredibly challenging, but by persevering, we grew in understanding the world we live in and were challenged to not only excel academically, but to become responsible and compassionate people.

I hope that we remember High School, not just today, not just the good, fun, exciting moments, but the struggles and disappointments, the lessons we learned. Because it’s all a part of our journey and the person we are today. Continue to be curious and search for truth. Let God guide you, enjoy the little moments, embrace change, stay true to yourself and what you believe in, and Class of 2019, “Let’s go set the world on fire.”

Riley Ljungdahl

'19 Riley Ljungdahl has never once

complained.

Instead she has made the most out of her diagnosis with transverse myelitis (an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord), turning it into countless opportunities.

In 2016, she took a chance on herself and her basketball skills that has forever changed the path of her life. She has earned a spot on Team USA’s Women’s Paralympic Basketball team that has been all over the world – including to Hamburg, Germany for the 2018 World Championships last August – and has visions of being a part of the Olympic Team in 2020 that will be in Tokyo.

“It definitely set a precedent for what I could do in my life, knowing that despite the disability, there is still a big world out there to discover,” Ljungdahl said. “If someone told me five years ago that I would be on the national team and have traveled to four or five countries, I would have told them they are crazy.”

Ljungdahl’s favorite trip was in 2017 to Cali, Colombia for the Americas Cup tournament. “Just because of the culture and the people down there,” she said. “The vitality, the colors and the kindness of everyone, it was intoxicating and you wanted to live their life, too.”

There is a chance that her disability will heal and that one day

she could walk again, but ever the optimist, she said: “I wouldn’t say that it is necessarily a big want or need any more just because I have moved past it and began accepting the disability. If I did walk again, I would be extremely thankful for it and grateful. And if I don’t walk again, I definitely won’t be sad and depressed about it.”

An opportunity to participate in the 2019 Women’s U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Thailand meant that Ljungdahl would have to miss graduating with her classmates. No one at Holy Family High School wanted her to have to sacrifice that experience, so on May 8, during the final Senior Class Mass of the year, she was presented with her diploma in a surprise ceremony.

One of 26 Holy Family student-athletes to participate in the Spring Signing Ceremony, Ljungdahl will continue to play basketball at the collegiate level for the University of Illinois where she was offered approximately $33,000 in academic and athletic scholarships.

“There is no way I would have

pictured being a little measly 12-year-old in the hospital to coming here, it has been kind of crazy,” she said of her whirlwind ride that is going to get more exciting in the coming years. “Starting off my 20s with a gold medal wouldn’t be bad and then the next five years, it would be 2024 and another medal.”

During their time in Thailand, Team USA went undefeated to claim the 2019 IWBF U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship.

In a recent interview with the Broomfield Enterprise, Ljungdahl remarked, “I definitely live by the motto that everything happens for a reason. I was born and raised a Catholic, so I believe God doesn’t put you in situations you can’t handle.”

GRADUATION 2019 | 12

Boys Basketball The senior class, led by Kyle Helbig

and Tanner Baird, left an indelible mark on the Tigers program.

The pair, who had been on the varsity roster since their freshman seasons, had been through a lot of highs and lows and it was only fitting on a January night that they would share the spotlight. Helbig entered the game against Erie just 18 away from 1,000 career points and Baird needed 27 to join him. The likelihood of both doing it on the same night was slim, but the stars aligned.

With just under four minutes to play in a blowout, Helbig was the first to reach the 1,000 plateau and shortly afterwards, Baird joined him.

The Tigers would go on to post a 14-2 mark in the Tri-Valley League, with their only two losses coming to Mead.

Coach Pete Villecco’s team earned the No. 4 seed in the Class 4A tournament with a very challenging draw. After a first round bye, they defeated Northfield and Lincoln to set up a third and winner-take-all final game against Mead in the Great 8.

In front of a standing room only raucous crowd at Holy Family, the Tigers played inspired from the tip and finally got the better of the Mavericks 63-54 to move on to their first 4A Final Four.

At the Coliseum, the Tigers ran into top-ranked and undefeated Lewis Palmer. The Rangers, who ultimately won the 4A title over Longmont, fell behind 7-0 to Garrett Green and the

Tigers, but then quickly erased that and went on to a resounding 70-56 victory.

Girls BasketballIf there is one thing that “Rocket”

Ron Rossi has discovered in his 33 years of coaching — 17 years at Lakewood and 16 at Holy Family — is that it is not about how you start, but how you finish.

After starting 2-4, the Tigers went 15-1 in Tri Valley League play, with their only loss coming on the road at 5A Windsor.

Led by a talented group of sophomores — notably Genevieve Gudino, Tyler Whitlock, Alyssa Wells and Cecelia Aanerud — the Tigers would eventually earn the No. 2 overall seed in the Class 4A tournament.

Holy Family earned a first-round bye and went on to defeat Glenwood Springs, The Classical Academy, and Greeley Central to punch their own ticket to the Coliseum.

At the Coliseum, the Tigers renewed their old Parochial League rivalry with Mullen, whose 18-8 record and No. 14 seeding were very deceptive. The Mustangs jumped on the Tigers early, knocking down eight of their 13 shots and forced Holy Family to commit 12 turnovers en route to a quick 19-4 lead. Mullen went on to win 55-33 and two days later captured the 4A title over Pueblo South.

WrestlingThe 2018-19 season will go down

as a rebuilding year for the Holy Family

wrestling team under the direction of first-year coach Jason Pedigo.

They opened the season by going 3-2 at the Broomfield duals and then hosted what would be their one and only home dual of the season against Fort Morgan. And despite the 52-28 loss to the Mustangs, the new coach was incredibly hopeful for what was ahead.

Two-time state placer Hunter Branson was the unquestioned leader of the Tigers and he lead more by example than he did with his words, winning three straight tournaments in January.

One of the highlights of the regular season was at Englewood, when the Tigers crowned two champions. In additions Branson’s victory, junior Benny Hernandez captured a title.

The Tigers had an incredibly tough draw at their Class 3A Region 2 tournament at Platte Valley but were able to advance two wrestlers — Branson and freshman heavyweight Jacob Berry — to the Pepsi Center for the State Tournament.

Branson landed on the podium for the third straight season, placing fifth. Berry, who made the tournament with a 5-12 record, lost both of his matches but gained a ton of experience moving forward.

Westminster and were truly the stars of the show. Through the overwhelming generosity of donors and supporters, Holy Family High School raised over $500,000.

It was a delightful night to celebrate the entire Holy Family High School community, and in particular, Patty and Mike G. Gabriel, who were honored as the recipients of the inaugural St. Joseph’s Award.

GRADUATION 2019 | 15

Inaugural St. Joseph's AwardThe St. Joseph Award seeks to recognize a member of our Holy Family High School community who cares for and

protects HFHS much like St. Joseph did for the Holy Family. The recipient must also exemplify our Mission and Vision in their daily lives and further demonstrate their passion for HFHS in all that they contribute to our school through time, talent, and treasure. In other words, they embody the qualities we strive to embed in our students. This award will be presented annually at the Tiger Gala.

The inaugural St. Joseph’s Award was presented to not one but two people who truly embody the spirit of St. Joseph and who have been faithful stewards of HFHS: Michael G. and Patty Langfield Gabriel, both from the class of 1970. Mike and Patty have dedicated their lives to HFHS as alumni, parents, administrators, and now grandparents, to Rocco ’22. We are proud of, grateful for, and certainly forever indebted to the Gabriels and their family for all they have contributed to Holy Family.

Alumni Spotlight

RememberingJohn Conway

'49 1931-2018

It doesn’t matter who you talk to about John Conway, they all say the same thing.

His attention to detail was the stuff of legend.

Whether it was church bulletins, during his time as a lawyer, or even keeping stats for close to 20 years at Holy Family sporting events, everything was perfect and nothing was missed.

“He was the ‘Golden Throat’ of Holy Family,” said Mike G. Gabriel, who also mentioned he never saw Conway without his signature purple ‘Booster Club’ jacket.

Conway was a Holy Family lifer. He went to grade school, then high school (graduating in 1949) and eventually

married his high school sweetheart Margaret. They were married 67 years before he passed away in July of 2018.

John and Marge would have six children – John, Kathy, Mike, Jean, Ann and Christine – all of whom were Holy Family grads.

Conway even served on the Colorado Supreme Court before opening his own private practice.

But his one way to stay in touch with the school was through sports. He announced football, basketball, baseball and wrestling and never missed a game.

“He was always there and as soon as he walked in the building, I knew I could relax as an athletic director,” Gabriel said. “Because that part of it was covered.”

Conway’s funeral was one of the most well attended at the Holy Family Church according to Father Marty Lally.

“I said at his funeral, he didn’t summarize things, he took minutes. We used to get tickled at his details and he was a great help to our receptionist and administrative assistant, Regina (Bowman, a 1960 Holy Family grad),” said Father Marty, who was quick to detail John’s far reaching effect on the community. “He used to come in and proofread the bulletin and because of his tremendous attention to detail, he was wonderful at that. He pointed out all the grammar mistakes and all the punctuation mistakes.”

The story is that John would go

to the church every Wednesday just to proofread the weekly bulletin for Regina. He would sit there in his Irish cap (both of his parents were from County Mayo, Ireland), occasionally tell a story about the hat, but, “you could not disrupt him, because he wouldn’t hear what you were saying, he was just so focused,” said Bowman, who along with Conway were chosen to deliver the reading at the parish’s 100th Anniversary celebration.

It was also at that church, which used to be the site of the school, were John fell in love. He told the story to Bowman that, “when I was on the second floor of the school, I looked out and saw the most beautiful woman I had ever (seen) in my entire life, the woman who would later become his wife (Margaret), and he saw her through that window.”

He and Marge would eventually purchase the window, named the Rose Window, which shined as a beacon of love at the parish.

The Holy Family Alumni Association will meet five times per year at various locations. These meetings may be social events or they may be business meetings. The meetings will be posted on the Holy Family High School website and on the Alumni Association Facebook Page. The association is always seeking new members to the association and volunteers to help with various aspects of the Association.

One of the main goals of the Holy Family Alumni Association is to continue to provide scholarships to qualified students. In order to provide these scholarships we are developing a strategic plan to raise funds. It is important to know that any money raised through the HFHS Alumni Association stays within this organization and is used only for the scholarship fund or the Alumni Association.

If you are interested in becoming more involved with the Alumni Association, or to update your contact information, please contact Ashlyn Frederick, Alumni Affairs Coordinator, at [email protected] or 303.410.1411, ext. 130.
