Who sells the largest number of cameras in India? Your guess is likely to
be Sony, Canon or Nikon. Answer is none of the above. The winner is
Nokia whose main line of business in India is not cameras but cell
phones. Reason being cameras bundled with cellphones are outselling
tand alone cameras. Now, what prevents the cellphone from replacing
he camera outright? Nothing at all. One can only hope the Sonys and
Canons are taking note.
Try this. Who is the biggest in music business in India? You think it is HMV
Sa-Re-Ga-Ma? Sorry. The answer is Airtel. By selling caller tunes (that
play for 30 seconds) Airtel makes more than what music companies
make by selling music albums (that run for hours). Incidentally Airtel is
ot in music business. It is the mobile service provider with the largest
ubscriber base in India. That sort of competitor is difficult to detect,
ven more difficult to beat (by the time you have identified him he has
lready gone past you). But if you imagine that Nokia and Bharti (Airtel's
parent) are breathing easy you can't be farther from truth. Nokia
onfessed that they all but missed the Smartphone bus. They admit that
Apple's I phone and Google's Android can make life difficult in future. But
you never thought Google was a mobile company, did you?
f these illustrations mean anything, there is a bigger game unfolding. It
s not so much about mobile or music or camera or emails? TheMahabharata" (the great Indian epic battle) is about "what is
omorrow's personal digital device"? Will it be a souped up mobile or a
palmtop with a telephone? All these are little wars that add up to that big
battle. Hiding behind all these wars is a gem of a question "who is my
ompetitor?"
Once in a while, to intrigue, I toss a question, it says "What Apple did to
Sony, Sony did to Kodak? Sony defined its market as audio (music from
he walkman). They never expected an IT company like Apple to
ncroach into their audio domain. Come to think of it, is it really
urprising? Apple as a computer maker has both audio and video
apabilities. So what made Sony think he won't compete on pure audio?
So also Kodak defined its business as film cameras, Sony defines its
businesses as "digital." In digital camera the two markets perfectly
meshed. Kodak was torn between going digital and sacrificing money onamera film or staying with films and getting left behind in digital
echnology. Left undecided it lost in both. It had to. It did not ask the
uestion "who is my competitor for tomorrow?" The same was true for
BM whose mainframe revenue prevented it from seeing the PC. The
ame was true of Bill Gates who declared "internet is a fad!" and then
urned around to bundle the browser with windows to bury Netscape.
The point is not who is today's competitor. Today's competitor is obvious.
Tomorrow's is not. In 2008, who was the toughest competitor to British
Airways in India? Singapore airlines? Better still, Indian airlines? Maybe,
but there are better answers. There are competitors that can hurt all
hese airlines and others not mentioned. The answer is
videoconferencing and telepresence services of HP and Cisco. Travel

compelled by their head quarters to use videoconferencing to sh

from Indian techies was nowhere in sight in 2008. (India has a quot
something like 65,000 visas to the U.S. They were going a-begg
Blame it on recession!).
India has two passions. Films and cricket. The two markets w
distinctly different. So were the icons. The cricket gods were Sachin
Sehwag. The filmi gods were the Khans (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh K
and the other Khans who followed suit). That was, when cricket
fundamentally test cricket or at best 50 over cricket. Then came IPL
the two markets collapsed into one. IPL brought cricket down to
overs. Suddenly an IPL match was reduced to the length of a 3 h
movie. Cricket became film's competitor. On the eve of IPL matc
movie halls ran empty. Desperate multiplex owners requisitioned
rights for screening IPL matches at movie halls to hang on to
audience. If IPL were to become the mainstay of cricket, as it is likel
be, films have to sequence their releases so as not clash with
matches. As far as the audience is concerned both are what in India
called 3 hour "tamasha" (entertainment). Cricket season might p

did you last see a black and white movie? When did you last us
fountain pen? When did you last type on a typewriter? The answer fo
the above is "I don't remember!" For some time there was a m
substitute for the typewriter called electronic typewriter that had lim
memory. Then came the computer and mowed them all. Today m
technologically challenged guys like me use the computer as
upgraded typewriter. Typewriters per se are nowhere to be seen.
One last illustration. 20 years back what were Indians using to w
them up in the morning? The answer is "alarm clock." The alarm cl
was a monster made of mechanical springs. It had to be physically ke
every day to keep it running. It made so much noise by way of ala

f you are a new entrant in the job market, you need to perfect your resume beforest
pplying for your 1 job. Since you are fresh out of college, use your education as
our strong point. Aggregate %, CGPA, accolades, club participation, etc. will beour focus. "Do I really need a resume? What should I write in my resume? Thesere questions which worry every college graduate looking for his/her first job.
Welcome to the real world! Yes you really need to make your resume and how you
resent yourself in that resume will go a long way towards getting you your first job.t's a myth that resumes of entry-level graduates are unimportant because theyack the 'pull' of experience. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only is awell-made resume important for every job seeker, it is more critical for entry level
raduates. A resume is a mirror of your professional identity. A well-defined resumempresses a recruiter. A sloppy resume immediately proclaims the candidate to beloppy.
Here are some do's and don'ts on what makes a great resume for graduateseeking entry-level positions in industry.
OBJECTIVE : One of the most frequently heard complaints made by recruiters
bout entry-level resumes is that they lack a specific objective. Mentioning apecific objective is by far the most important feature of an entry- level resume.
Without goal clarity you are bound to drown in the sea of mediocrity. The only thing
worse than the absence of an objective is a vague objective. Something like "Mybjective is to work with a dynamic company which will fully utilize my talents" is aomplete no-no! This objective is worthless because it gives the potential employero idea about your goals or your direction.
Your objective should be clear, well-defined and short-not more than 10-12 words.t should be aimed towards getting a particular position in a specific industry. Thusour objective should talk about the following:
. Pos i t ion wan ted , 2 . Funct iona l a rea , 3 . Indust ry wan tedExamples of good objectives : Example 1: "Junior management position wanted inPROGRAMMING/engineering field in IT industry., Example 2: Entry level
rogrammer in a software development company. Example 3: Marketing positionn the FMCG segment of a Multinational Company. Example 4: Multimediaoftware development position. Open to Relocation.
SUMMARY : Summary is the second most important factor that is conspicuous bys absence in resumes of entry-level graduates. It is a good idea to include aummary of your resume after having mentioned your objective. This sums up youresume in a nutshell and gives you an opportunity to highlight your strengths. It
nvites the recruiter to read your detailed resume. The summary should consist of-5 specific points-either bulleted or in one paragraph.
Sample Summary :
B.E (Computer Science) from IIT-Delhi, in 2000.
Course in Computers Database programmes Oracle 8I & VB6 PENTASOFT in 2005.
Consistently good academic record.
Good analytical and communication skills.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS : Put your qualifications in a rev
chronological order i.e. the recent ones first followed by earlier ones. Entryresume should also mention the names of their school and college, years in wthey passed their board examinations. However, include your marks only whe
have shown a good academic performance.
WORK EXPERIENCE :An entry- level resume cannot compete with resumexperienced workers in the area of work experience. But don't forget t
internships, voluntary work and summer training that you have undertakenyou present these is very important. Make sure you clearly define your dutresponsibilities during this training. E.g.: "Worked as a summer trainee in Inlargest Oil Refinery. I was working for the system control department. Wrote q
reports as well as ISO features for the company." Any projects done for your sor your college should also be mentioned.
DESIGN : Follow a simple design, which gives maximum information in
minimum number of pages. Use an easy to read and commonly used fon'Times New Roman' or 'Verdana.' Limit your font size to 10-11. Do not undeheavily.
WORD USAGE : Simple language, lucid expression with good grammar ithumb rule. Watch your tenses carefully. Use short and simple sentencesnever-ever make the mistake of using long words just to impress the recruiter.
Reference :There are many things we would rather not write in our resumes.companies opt for a reference check during recruitment. Your resumconsidered a legal document and fudging up small details may cause you embarrassment in your career.
All right! so you've made your resume. But this is not the time to sit back and rThere are some important post-resume do's left.
CHECK, AND RE-CHECK! : The most important post resume step: Read anread your resume for any mistakes. Check the facts, the grammar, the spelAfter you have checked it, get you parents, friends, teachers to check it for you

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy norcontent. One day, the King came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. Thisfascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy, while alowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant, "Why are you so happy? "The manreplied, "Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don't need too much - justa roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies." The king was not satisfied with thatreply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King'swoes and the servant's story, the advisor said, "Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has notbeen made part of the 99 Club."
"The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?" the King inquired. The advisor replied, "Your Majesty,to truly know what The 99 Club is, place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant'sdoorstep." When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he opened the bag, helet out a great shout of joy... so many gold coins!
He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. He wondered, "What could have happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99coins!" He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted, hedecided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and completehis collection. From that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly
thgrumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100 gold coin. He stoppedsinging while he worked. Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When hesought his advisor's help, the advisor said, "Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joinedThe 99 Club."
He continued, "The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy butare never content, because they're always yearning and striving for that extra telling tothemselves: "Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life."
We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we are givensomething bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness,we hurt the people around us, all these as a price for our growing needs and desires.
That's what joining The 99 Club is all about.
