Escape winter at Lakeville home show Get into a gardening state of mind March 15

by Laura AdelmannSUN THISWEEK

DAKOTA COUNTY TRIBUNE

One of the first signs of spring is fi-nally here. Visitors are invited to escape win-ter’s grasp at the annual Lakeville Landscape Home Expo & Consumer Showcase, at Lakeville North High School from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Satur-day, March 15. Displays and information from more than 100 exhibitors with expertise, ad-vice and displays covering all aspects of home improvement projects will be available for “one-stop shopping,” and advice, said Linda Rynda, member ser-vices director with the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’re going to have seminars going all day,” Rynda said. “They start at 9 and will run every hour.” Topics include realistic budgeting, container gardening, problems with ve-hicle warning lights, health insurance and energy efficiency. The popular free event draws huge crowds every year.

“It’s just a great avenue for mem-bers to be able to get their information out to Lakeville and the surrounding area,” Rynda said. One of the most eye-pleasing exhib-its is available compliments of Terra Garden Center, where cheery plants with bright colors welcome visitors to dream of summer landscapes and warm summer days. Terra Garden Center Retail Manag-er Melanie Carlson will be presenting a seminar on container gardening at 10 a.m. Carlson said container gardening is exploding in popularity because it offers versatility, and expands the cre-ative abilities of the gardener. “People like container gardening be-cause it can be done in small spaces and you don’t have to bend over to weed,” she said. “More people are decorating patios and decks with containers.” Another creative outlet involving containers is miniature gardening also known as “fairy gardening,” which

Carlson said is exploding in popularity. She described “fairy gardening” as “a doll house for adults.” Carlson said the little gardens are created in a container using dwarf plants then accentuated using small decorations like houses, bridges and fairies. “The biggest popularity for those are with moms and daughters,” Carlson said. “And so many grandmas are doing it with their granddaughters.” The activity is fun and is a good way for adults to pass on their love of gar-dening to the next generation. “It’s a really good way to get kids into gardening and interacting with na-ture,” Carlson said. There are many kinds of accessories, including patio furniture lines, lamps, beach umbrellas, pine cones, benches and even miniature fountains. The gardens are their own little worlds within the containers. “It’s setting a scene,” she said. “You’re creating a scene and telling a story within that scene.” Many of the exhibitors will have dis-plays and giveaways for those who visit their booth. Carlson said they will give away free

little plants to children and be on hand to answer gardening questions and pro-vide gardening and landscape informa-tion to the public. “We really try to showcase what we’re all about and show people all the differ-ent things they can find at the store.” Terra Garden Center will also hold a grand prize drawing, and provide visi-tors with $5 coupons. Rynda said the Landscape Home Expo & Consumer Showcase will also include businesses that one might not expect at that type of event, including the ATA Leadership Academy, a mar-tial arts studio and local restaurants. “There’s a huge variety,” she said. Rynda said the economy seems to be getting better, and recent building sta-tistics show development is beginning to explode in Lakeville. Lakeville Community and Economic Development Director Dave Olson re-cently reported Lakeville has issued building permits with a total valuation of $149.5 million in 2013, which he said is an increase of more than $20 million over the 2012 total of $129.3 million and more than $61 million increase over the 2011 total of $87.6 million. According to newly updated Metro-

EXPO, from 2

politan Council population statistics, Lakeville’s population is expected to reach 82,900 by 2040, an average in-crease of 898 per year. The council is also predicting Lakev-ille’s number of households to be 30,500 by 2040. City Administrator Steve Mielke said in 2010, Lakeville had a count of 18,683 households, which he said is an average increase of 394 households per year. With growth on the surge, Rynda said people thinking about moving into Lakeville, those planning to remodel or

just spruce up their home will find a lot of good information at the Landscape Home Expo & Consumer Showcase. “This is just such a great opportu-nity for people to talk to many differ-ent business and find someone who can meet with them on neutral ground,” she said. “It’s the place to be if you want to find out what your options are. You can get estimates and make appointments. There’s no cost to the consumer except time, and they can find anything. It’s re-ally a great opportunity.” – Laura Adelmann is at [email protected].
