Labor Relations Program

Cornell University’s Labor Relations Training Program Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) is the nation’s most valued resource for education and assistance in the labor relations field. Companies today are faced with a host of industrial relations issues that require skills in connecting business strategy to labor strategy, managing multiple stakeholder groups, effective negotiations and advocacy, performance management, and dispute resolution processes. These programs will provide much needed strategic awareness combined with practical application. The Collective Bargaining and Contract Administration certificate programs combine Ivy League academic depth with the skills of leading practitioners to create a unique, highly specialized and interactive curriculum. The programs include case studies and an interactive, practice-based approach to learning, such as extensive collective bargaining and arbitration simulations and other exercises. Course participants will receive a certificate of completion from Cornell University’s ILR School.

Open Enrollment Workshops and Certificates Open enrollment workshops can be taken individually or as part of a certificate in Collective Bargaining or Contract Administration. They provide the opportunity to share perspectives, experiences and expertise with participants from throughout the United States and the world.

Classes are held at the Cornell ILR Conference Center in New York City.

Collective Bargaining Immersion

This intensive course is designed to prepare the entire collective bargaining team for negotiations using the actual issues they will face. It includes multiple opportunities for participants to practice what they are learning through cases studies, group exercises and negotiation simulations. Participants learn how to put their organization’s business strategy at the center of their bargaining strategy. Using their knowledge of the business and operations of the organization, participants engage in an interactive exercise to develop bargaining strategy which includes translating overall objectives into specific proposals and anticipating the union’s response and demands. Students then learn and practice “at-the-table” negotiating strategy and tactics in a full day negotiation simulation.

Contract Administration Immersion

The Contract Administration Immersion program is developed to meet the knowledge and skill-building needs of your organization’s human resources and labor relations practitioners. This workshop will provide in- depth knowledge and skill-building in the subject areas of: labor relations, employment and labor law, contract interpretation, grievance and arbitration handling, and workplace investigations. Case studies, role plays and simulations allow participants to apply what they’ve learned during the workshop to relevant issues that may arise in the workplace.

Advanced Arbitration Advocacy

This program is designed for the professional who wishes to become an arbitration advocate, or for the existing advocate who wants to improve and master their skills. Arbitration Advocacy is equal parts science and art with the goal of persuasive story telling. Participants learn and practice how to use the technical aspects of the advocacy process to tell a persuasive story clearly and effectively before a

labor arbitrator. The program can be specifically customized to include contract provisions and fact patterns from participating organizations. Participants travel from case analysis through closing argument with a heavy emphasis on practicing acquired skills and receiving feedback along the way.

Managing in a Union Environment

This workshop is an interactive program designed to educate operational managers and supervisors on how to effectively manage employees with union representation. The workshop is built around best managerial practices, applicable law and the organization’s own policies, procedures and customs. Participants will acquire in-depth knowledge and skills regarding building and leading teams, effectively communicating with employees and unions, conducting disciplinary investigations and imposing discipline, managing grievance and arbitration, and resolving conflict. The program is interactive and participants will have multiple opportunities to practice learned skills.

Joint Labor-Management Interest- Based Bargaining Training

Interest- based bargaining frames negotiation as joint problem solving to resolve each party’s underlying issues, needs, and concerns. The process works by encouraging the parties to focus on interests, not positions, and to use communication and innovative thinking to identify superior solutions. This workshop is offered to union and management negotiating teams to experience together. Through case examples, role plays, and facilitated discussion, the parties are encouraged to critically examine whether interest-based negotiation principles and techniques can make their own contract negotiations and grievance handling more effective. Participants will learn a step-by-step process for using interest-based techniques in bargaining and in day-to-day interactions to strengthen the labor-management relationship.
