When shooting in the field, youMUST make the safety operative and use it. ➡ Control your shooting. Be aware of the rangeof the ammunition you shoot. This may varyfrom several hundred yards for shotgun pelletsto several miles for rifle bullets. Never shoot at ahard surface or at water because shot and bul-lets can ricochet in any direction with sufficientforce to cause injury or death.➡ Be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that it is safe toshoot in the direction you intend to fire. Prevent dirt andforeign objects from entering the action andthe barrel. Before loading a firearm, inspect thebarrel to be certain that it is clean and free offoreign objects. Shooting with ANY obstructionin the barrel - dirt, mud, snow, grease, or rem-nants of wads, bullets, or bullet jackets - cancause a barrel to bulge or rupture and can

AssemblyLubricate gun as described in MaintenanceSection (page 20). Open the top lever. Holdthe barrels in the left hand as shown, bracethe muzzle between your legs. Holding thereceiver and stock by the pistol grip with theright hand, engage the barrel into the actionat about a 45-degree angle using pressure

with the ball of the left hand to direct thebarrel. (See illus. No. 1) Using a rocking motion up and down, seat the barrel lug fullyinto the receiver. Holding the gun in onehand, take the forearm in the other and posi-tion the rear surface against the front of theaction (See illus. No. 2) at about a 30 degreeangle. Push the button at the end of theforearm (See illus. No. 3) to release the catch.The forearm can then be firmly pressed upinto the latched position against the barrel,taking care that the latch engages fully. Avoid striking the underside of the barrels orthe receiver with the sharp edges of theforend iron.DisassemblyDisassemble the gun in the reverse order.Push the forend button, and remove the

forend. Then open the top lever and carefullyremove the barrel by gently rocking and rota-ting them until it is disengaged. Do notattempt to pry them off with a single motionbecause this may damage the finish of thebarrel or the receiver.

RemovalUnscrew the stockbolt with the special 5mmT-handled stock wrench supplied. Thread out2 full turns and tap wrench handle while instock bolt, on firm surface, to loosen tensionon receiver. You may lay receiver on a flatpadded surface. Thread out the rest of theway. Gently bump the handle of the stockwrench or the bottom of the pistol grip withthe palm of the hand to loosen the stockfrom the receiver. Make certain that the boltis completely disengaged and then carefullyremove the stock to the rear (see illus. No. 4)Do not move the stock up and down to loo-sen and remove it because this may damagethe inletting.

Stock Removal and Reinstallation

ReinstallationInsert the stock wrench into the stockthrough the small hole in the recoil pad andseat it firmly in the stock bolt. Slide the stockstraight onto the rear tang and forward tomeet the receiver. Push them together firmly.Again, be careful not to force the stock ontothe receiver or to rock it up and down because this may damage the inletting. Seatthe stock bolt in the bolt hole and tightenfirmly, but not excessively, with the stockwrench.

Locking System

The heart of the KX-5 single barrel trap gunis a massive locking bolt. Even after manythousands of rounds, any wear on thelocking bolt is compensated for by its freeforward movement, which keeps the gun astight as new. When your gun is new, thelever will stay slightly to the right, and this ispart of the design that ensures complete andtight locking at all times (see illus. No. 5).

Over a useful life of many thousands ofrounds, and as the gun wears in, the openinglever will move to the left. In the rare eventof extreme wear after extensive use, a quali-fied Krieghoff gunsmith can install a newlocking bolt, which will restore your lockingsystem to "as new” condition.When dismantling your gun for storage, thelever should be pressed to the right (see illus.No. 6) at the same time depressing thelocking bolt latch in the bottom of the recei-ver and simultaneously pulling the trigger.The top lever can then be eased back to thecenter position (see illus. No. 7) to removetension from the spring.

If the gun has a release trigger, press the toplever all the way to the right and set therelease by pulling the trigger. Then allow thetop lever to close slightly and let the triggergo. You may then allow the top lever to easeall the way to the center position.

The KX-5 features a unique fully adjustable,ventilated, step rib which measures 1/2” –5/16” (12 –8 mm) in width. The rib can beeasily adjusted allowing you to change thepoint-of-impact quickly and conveniently.The gun is calibrated at the factory for a 65% / 35% point of impact.

By altering the height of the rib you can varythe pattern from flat shooting 50% / 50% tonearly 90% / 10% high. The free-floatingadjustable rib is locked in place by a set screw at the muzzle, and a hex screw at thebreech. As the screws are loosened, the ribcan be moved up or down by rotating the

small knurled nut located below the frontbead. As the rib is raised or lowered, it rota-tes on a short radius around a cam locatedjust in front of the monoblock. When thedesired rib height is reached, and both setscrews are tightened, you may readjust thecomb of the KX-5 stock and the gun is readyto go.

Instructions for Adjusting

1) Before adjusting, cleaning, storing, orhandling your gun other than shooting,ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE GUN IS UNLOA-DED!!!

2) Open the gun and use your KX-5 stockwrench to loosen the hexagon set screw thatis located in the face of the monoblock justabove the chamber.

3) Loosen the set screw in the knurled nutlocated just below the front bead with thesmall hex wrench provided. Turning the nut clockwise lowers the rib and raises thepoint of impact. Turning the nut counter-clockwise raises the rib and lowers the point

of impact. Now turn the knurled nut andnotice the 5 calibrated lines that appear asthe rib moves up or down. When the gun ismade, it is set to shoot a 65%/35% pattern.As you move the rib DOWN, each line of thecalibration marks a 1-2” rise in the pattern.RAISING THE RIB by one line of calibrationWILL LOWER THE PATTERN by 1-2”.

4) When the rib is at the chosen height tigh-ten the set screws at the muzzle end. Noticethat the two screws are offset at a 40-degreeangle so that one is always accessible.

5) Now use your KX-5 stock wrench to tigh-ten the screw in the face of the monoblockand close the gun.

6) Re-adjust the comb on the stock so yousee your comfortable as it was before youmade the rib adjustments. Do this by adjusting the comb up or down until you seethe corrected sight picture.

7) Re-pattern gun and repeat steps 3-6 untilyou are confident on straight away breaksand/or a pattern board.

Screw-in Chokes

It is very important that choke tubes beproperly maintained and protected fromdamage.If chokes are not periodically removed fromthe barrel and cleaned, corrosion and rustmay form between the choke tube and thebarrel. This makes it impossible to removethe tube from the barrel.

Choke tubes should be removed and cleanedwhenever the gun is cleaned. Apply barrelsolvent to the choke tube and wipe it clean,paying particular attention to remove foreignparticles from the threaded area and anyplastic build up from the rear internal portionof the tube. Also apply solvent to and wipeclean the threads in the barrel itself. Apply alight coat of Krieghoff GP or other fine gun

oil to the choke tube before installing it inthe barrel. Grease threads sparingly. Installchoke tubes by hand. If you encounter anyroughness or resistance, check to make surethat both the tube and the barrel are clean,free of debris, well-lubricated and undama-ged.

If a choke tube is dented or otherwise dam-aged, its rear edge could protrude into thebore of the barrel. When the gun is fired, theshot charge could be impeded by the dam-aged tube, and the barrel could be totallydestroyed. Handle the choke tubes with care.Store them in their protective cases. Examinethem closely for damage if they are everdropped, stepped on, or otherwise dented.NEVER shoot with a damaged choke tube.

If you discover that a choke tube is damaged,discard it immediately.

Whenever you change or reinstall choketubes, look through the bore to make ABSO-LUTELY CERTAIN that the tube does notprotrude into or obstruct the barrel in anyway. Failure to do so could result in severedamage to the barrel and SEVERE INJURY tothe shooter or those around him.

To install a choke tube, screw it all the way inby hand and tighten it gently with the choketube wrench.Never apply force when installing a choketube and never over tighten.For choke tube selection see page 13.

ALWAYS UNLOAD ANY GUN BEFORE CHANGING CHOKE TUBES! Never shoot a choke tubed barrel without a choke tube installed.

The KX-5 represents the combination of themost modern materials and traditional finecraftsmanship. This craftsmanship has evolvedover decades of careful attention to finehandwork and fitting and has been proven byyears of extensive use of our guns in the fieldof competition. Today, all of this has resultedin a gun which we can call a product of thehighest quality.

We recommend that steel shot not be firedthrough barrels with tighter than modifiedchoke because the hard steel can damage the choke ramp and ruin the barrel. Note that this does not result in any loss of ballisticefficiency since steel shot patterns tighterthan lead shot, and modified chokes gives theoptimal long range performance with steelshot.

To adjust the trigger position, loosen the screw about one turn with the hex key provided (See image). The forward opening inthe trigger is where the screw is. The rear opening does not contain anything.Slide the key to the desired position and gently retighten the trigger position screw.

Note:To prevent damage, it is important to neverover-tighten the locking screw.

Adjusting Trigger Pull for PoundageYour gun will come with the trigger set for 3 1/2 pounds. If a heavier pull is desired, usethe 2.5mm hex wrench provided to tightenthe screw found behind the trigger. Throughthe opening in the trigger guard, turn the screw clockwise.

Attention: If the trigger screw is tightened toofar the trigger will lock up. In this event, loo-sen the trigger screw by moving it counterclockwise until the trigger functions properlyagain.

Release triggers are particularly popular inAmerican trapshooting. As the namesuggests, the gun fires when the trigger is released, rather than when it is pulled. Theidea is to have the trigger finger make asmooth, almost effortless move by simply‘letting go’. To fire a gun equipped with arelease trigger, you must first ‘set’ the trig-ger. Facing in the direction that you intend toshoot and with the gun mounted to theshoulder, you pull the trigger until you feel acomplete and positive stop. You must holdthe trigger in that position until you are readyto shoot. Call for the target, and release thetrigger to fire the gun. If for any reason youdo not want to fire the gun after you haveset the trigger, you must disengage the trig-ger to prevent the gun from firing. To do

this, maintain a firm hold on the trigger withyour trigger finger, being absolutely certainthat the gun is pointed in a safe direction.With your opposite hand, open the gun withthe top lever in the usual manner. Allow thegun to fall open. Push lever over again withfinger OFF of the trigger for final ‘click’ assear and hammer are returned. The releasetrigger is now disengaged. To shoot, closethe gun and proceed in the manner descri-bed above. It is absolutely necessary that youthoroughly understand the release triggermechanism and familiarize yourself with it.Dry-fire the gun repeatedly with snap capsuntil you are completely familiar with theway the trigger feels and handles.

Warning: At least 10% of the guns used to shoot Ame-rican trap are equipped with release triggers.NEVER SHOOT A GUN WITH RELEASE TRIG-GERS UNTIL YOU HAVE DRY-FIRED IT ANDTHOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND THE TRIGGERAND HOW TO DISENGAGE IT. NEVER SHOOTANY GUN UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELYFAMILIAR WITH ITS TRIGGER SYSTEM ANDALL OF ITS OPERATING AND SAFETYFEATURES.

Krieghoff KX-5 stocks are finished with aspecially formulated epoxy lacquer whichseals the wood completely so that it cannotbe damaged even in the wettest weather. Ifyour gun does get wet, however, the stock,forend, receiver, and barrels should be wipeddown and allowed to air dry separately. Afterthe metal components are completely dry,apply a light coat of gun oil. After the stockand forend are dry, they require no furthercare. Note that the matte satin finish of thesestocks may become glossy over time throughuse.

Krieghoff KX-5 stocks are adjustable at thecomb for height and off-set. The drop at heel and comb can be adjustedfrom approximately 1-1/4“ to approx. 1-5/8“. To change the height adjustment,carefully insert the 2.5mm adjustable stockwrench supplied into the holes on the rightside of the comb, and loosen the clamp screws by turning them counterclockwise for

approximately two turns. Do not attempt to turn the clamp screws allthe way out because this may damage thestock finish around the holes.

After loosening the clamp screws, pull thecomb piece straight up and completely off of the stock. Do not rock the comb piece fromfront to back as you pull it up. Underneaththe comb piece are two round steel platesinlet into the wood. Each of the plates con-tains a height adjustment screw. Use thesmall stock wrench to adjust the screws, tur-ning them counterclockwise (out) to raise thecomb and clockwise (in) to lower it. Bothadjustment screws should be at the sameheight when the comb piece is reinstalled,although the design allows for a limited pitchlengthwise.

To reinstall the comb piece, align the holes inthe steel plate with the guidepost on thestock and slide them directly onto the posts,again being careful not to rock the combpiece back and forth, until the height adjust-ment screws rest firmly on the steel plates.

Note that the height adjustment screws mustrest firmly on the steel plates of the stock asdescribed above or else the comb height willnot be consistent and may actually changeduring shooting.

Adjusting for Offset: Proceed as described above to take the combpiece completely off the stock. Theguideposts located in the cutoff section ofthe stock are now accessible. Use the smallstock wrench to loosen the lock screw on thetop of the guidepost and then slide it side-ways in either direction for the desiredamount of offset. Both posts should bemoved about the same distance, although aslight variation is possible. Note the lines ofcalibration, which make it possible to check,maintain, and repeat the precise degree ofadjustment.

MaintenanceThe Krieghoff KX-5, like any other fine equip-ment, must be properly maintained to ensurea lifetime of reliable and consistent service.Before assembling and shooting the gun, itscritical bearing surfaces must be properlylubricated. Immediately after shooting andbefore storing the gun, its external metal surfaces should be wiped down and lightly

oiled. The bore and action of the gun shouldbe thoroughly cleaned periodically. Your KX-5 should be serviced by a qualified Krieghoff gunsmith after every15,000-20,000 rounds.When assembling the gun, place a smallamount of Krieghoff Gun Glide or other highquality gun grease in the barrel pivots. Placea very light coat on the flat surfaces adjacentto the pivots; on the barrel lug; on the barrelsidewings where they are engaged by thetop latch; and on the surface of the forendiron where it joins the receiver. After shooting and disassembling the gun,wipe these surfaces to remove the greaseand any grit that may have accumulated.Toclean the action, remove the stock and use asoft brush to apply mineral spirits or

conventional gun cleaning solvent and remove all visible grime and debris. NEVERuse aggressive aerosol cleaners for this purpose and NEVER allow cleaning solutionof any kind to run through the action blockitself because the solvent will reduce orremove the gun’s internal lubrication. This lubrication can only be replaced by aqualified Krieghoff gunsmith after completedisassembly of the action! To prevent this,always keep the firing pin above the areathat you are cleaning so that the solvent willdrain away from the action block. Whencleaning the sear, hammer, etc., keep theback tang of the action pointed down. When cleaning the front of the action, keepit pointed down. THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT!

After cleaning the action, spray it very lightlywith Gun Pro. You may also apply a very,very light coat of Gun glide to the rear portion of the bottom of the sear. This canbe done with the tip of a toothpick, and,again, only a very, very light film of lubricantis needed. The barrels must be cleaned toremove lead fouling and the build up of plastic from wads. Use a conventional boresolvent and follow the manufacturer’sinstructions, saturating cleaning patches withthe solvent and running them through thebore with a shotgun cleaning rod. For particularly stubborn fouling, apply moresolvent and use a phosphor bronze cleaningbrush. Then alternate solvent-soaked and drypatches until the bore is clean and finish witha light coat of Gun Pro. If your barrel is

equipped with choke tubes, clean the barrelfirst with the tubes installed and then removeand clean the tubes themselves as describedon p.12. If you shoot in the rain or snow andyour gun is wet, disassemble it; wipe it dry;and then allow it to air dry thoroughly over-night before applying a light coat of gun oil.

Annual Service:For the dedicated clay target competitor, theKrieghoff Annual Service is recommen-ded after every 15,000 to 20,000 roundsto keep your Krieghoff in top form and ensure consistent performance. The gun isdisassembled, cleaned and re-lubricated. Allsprings are replaced, and it is fined tuned tooriginal factory specifications.

Gun Pro is a high quality gun oil used for thecontinuous care of internal and external gunparts: locks, barrels, and stocks. It cleans,lubricates, and protects against corrosion. Itpenetrates moisture and neutralizes acidfrom hands and is non-gumming and heatresistant. Gun Pro contains no silicone andtherefore will not damage optics such as scopes.

Gun Glide is a high quality grease that pro-tects guns from heavy wear. Use it as descri-bed above on the heavy wear areas of the KX-5 and other break-open guns: the barrelpivot point, and the area just behind theback of the barrel lug; the face of the ejector,where it meets the face of the breech; andthe rear surface of the forend iron.
