Black & Veatch/AECOM JV secures Singapore water project

PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, has chosen a Black &

Veatch and AECOM joint venture to provide engineering services for Phase 2 of its Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS).

DTSS Phase 2 will extend DTSS to the western side of Singapore through a 30 km South Tunnel, 70 km of link sewers, the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) and a 12 km deep sea outfall. A NEWater factory will be integrated with the Tuas WRP.

The B&V+AECOM joint venture will conduct a feasibility study and preliminary design as part of the first stage of the project. The team will then programme manage the delivery of DTSS Phase 2 in the second stage of the project.

Biwater awarded Moroccan water reuse project

Biwater has secured a turn-key project to design and construct a

new wastewater treatment plant in Aourir, Morocco.

Under the water reuse project, feedwater will undergo pre-treatment, biological treatment, tertiary treatment including disinfection, and sludge dewatering by solar drying. The water will be used to irrigate the grounds of nearby golf courses and hotels.

POWER GENERATION

Thai power plant to use GE water treatment technology

GE’s ZeeWeed 1500 ultrafiltration membranes, reverse osmosis and

electrodeionization technologies will be used to purify water at IRPC Public Co Ltd’s new combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Rayong, Thailand.

The CHP plant will use GE pressurized hollow-fibre ultrafiltration membranes, electrodeionization and a customized reverse osmosis system to reduce chemical consumption by approximately 99% compared with conventional ion exchange technology.

The facility is expected to begin commercial operation in October 2014.

Toyo Thai Co Ltd is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor on the project.

Alliant Energy picks KBR as EPC partner for Iowa generating station

KBR Inc has been awarded a full notice to proceed on an

engineering, procurement, and construction contract for Alliant Energy’s new 650 MW, combined-cycle, natural-gas-fuelled generating station in Marshalltown, Iowa, USA.

The new generating station will consist of two combustion turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, and one steam turbine.

Kurion to treat tank water at Fukushima nuclear plant

Kurion Inc is to deliver an at-tank mobile system to remove

strontium from tank water at the Tokyo Electric Power Co’s (TEPCO) damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

Kurion has already provided the first set of equipment to the plant’s staging area for inspection and plans to ship the balance of equipment in the coming weeks.

The Kurion Mobile Processing System (KMPS), which should be operational this summer, will be moved around the site and placed beside tank groups. The system is designed to help TEPCO reduce strontium from the hundreds of tanks on-site that contain approximately 400 000 metric tons of water.

In 2011 Kurion was part of an international team of nuclear waste management companies to quickly deliver the first-ever external reactor cooling and purification system, which is still in operation.

The KMPS employs a similar modular plug-and-process design approach to that used in the Kurion cesium adsorption system since 2011, supplemented with additional filtration capabilities. For the KMPS, Kurion uses a different proprietary, inorganic and easily vitrified ion-exchange media to separate strontium from competing, lower-risk contaminants also present in the water.

Degrémont to operate and maintain Australian water reclamation plant

Degrémont has signed a contract with Delta Electricity to operate

and maintain the water reclamation plant at Vales Point Power Station in New South Wales.

The project will run for an initial term of two years and covers the delivery of new membranes, the supply of chemicals, and the overall operation, remote monitoring and management of the facility.

Process Group to supply MEG regeneration package for Caspian Sea project

Australia’s Process Group has secured a contract from a

London-based client for the design and supply of a monoethylene glycol (MEG) regeneration package for a project in the Caspian Sea region.

The overall project scope involves a number of new production wells, new offshore platforms, a sub-sea pipeline and a new onshore gas plant where Process Group’s equipment will be installed.

MEG is injected at the wellhead to prevent freezing in the sub-sea pipeline. Once the contaminated MEG is separated from the gas/water/oil mixture when it reaches the onshore processing plant, the Process Group
