prinCipal’s Message

It gives me a great pleasure to bring my maiden issue of “Lotus” . It is familiar that we are constantly encouraging the Young minds to give a free rein to their imagination and nurture a creative spirit. Our efforts to pair creativity with education enhance the impact of the learning experience and extend our interaction with students and teachers towards deeper learning .

Working with and involving kids in the creative process enriches our work and enlivens our creative practice. We strive to ensure that each issue would serve as a voice and a platform for our young buds to be heard. Thus enabling a depth of reflection and response in the classroom and beyond.

an aMazing story about nuMbers

Once upon a time, when Japan was ruled by a powerful general, Joyotomi Hideyoshi, there was a so called clever person specially loved by the general. His name was Sorori Shinzaemon. One day, the general decided to present Sorori a gift for his pithy efforts to win his heart.

He asked Sorori,“what would you like?”.Sorori replied, “Please give me a grain of rice today, my lord. Then tomorrow, give me two grains and the next day, please give me four more and the day after that eight more and so on for thirty days”.

Rice was very scarce in those days because of famine. But Hideyoshi of course granted this apparently upon the entreaty. Well, on the 30th day, Hideyoshi was surprised to see Sorori waiting with a big wrapping cloth, large enough to hold the contents of a whole storage house. “

“What are you doing with that?” inquired Hideyoshi.”Well, my Lord!”Sorori explained(with a smile),’it is for carrying the rice you promised.”

If you do the sum 1+2+4+8+16+----------- for thirty days,it adds up to 1073741823 grains of rice. It shall need a whole storage story it was about the magic

of numbers.

Physical education as a part of education has been affected by social changes .Through the decades, elementary physical education has progressed through three important stages-participation, socialization and physical fitness. But later a fourth stage rapidly developed that is, understanding the environment, movement and pupil. Physical education like any other discipline can be organized in such a manner that each child can gradually develop the main ideas of the discipline and synthesis of the related subject matter.

T h r e e organized subjects are

1. Pupil move to survive.

2.Pupil move to discover and understand his environment.

3.Pupil move to control and adjust to his environment.

All the organizations and individuals have some influence and some responsibility for the social development of a child. Therefore, the schools have got important role in developing

a child’s socialization through Physical education.

Physical education can also develop the attitude and behavioral changes. Mostly emotional involvement is associated with these activities a n d t h e

degree o f interaction among the students is important for social development. Physical education helps in developing leadership qualities and honesty in a student. The social values, which a student learns in sports fields are carried over to other fields of life.

Physical Fitness is one of the most important motives

of physical education and the regular exercise could only maintain fitness of body and mind. A student doing regular exercise could only maintain fitness of body and mind. A student doing regular exercise tends to become less depressed and improves his self-image. It is often asked if regular exercise is related to academic

performance. In fact, due to regular exercise a

student becomes more respective, alert and more intelligent and this in turn improves his grade.

P h y s i c a l education is considered as that part of all education

which proceeds predominantly through

physical activity.

guESS youR BiRtHdayHere’s a fun trick to show a friend , a group

or an entire class of pupils. Tell the person (or class) to recall their birthday …… and that you are going to guess it.

Step1: Ask them to take the month number from their birthday (ie. Jan. – 1, Feb. – 2 ,…).

Step 2 : Multiply that by 5.

Step 3 : Add 6 to that product.

Step 4 : Multiply the total by 4.

Step 5 : Again add 9 to the above product.

Step 6 : Multiply the above sum by 5.

Step 7 : Finally add the day they were born to the product.

Step 8 : Now subtract 165 from the last sum and now you will have the month and date they were born on.

How it works ?

M Month number

D Day number

After 7 steps the expression for their calculation is

5[4(5M+6)+9] +D = 100M +D+ 165

Thus if you subtract off 165 what will remain will be the month in hundreds plus the day!

hardy-raManujaM nuMber 1729A common anecdote about Ramanujam

relates to the number 1729 . Hardy arrives at Ramanujam’s residence in a cab number 1729. Hardy commented that the number 1729 seemed to be uninteresting . Ramanujam replied that it was actually very interesting number being the smallest natural number representing in two different ways as a sum of two cubes.

1729 =13 +123 = 93 + 103

aMicaBlE nuMBERS : There are few pair of numbers that have a very

peculiar affinity for each other and they are so called “Amicable numbers”.

Take for an instance the pair of numbers 220 and 284. It turns out that all the factors of 220 ie.,those less than itself add upto to 284.And surprisingly the factors of 284 add upto 220.

The sum of all the factors of 220 but less than 220=1+2+4+5+10+11+20+22+44+55+110

=284.

The sum of all the factors of 284 but less than 284=1+2+4+71+142 = 220.

There are three other pairs like this.

1,184 and 1,210

17,296 and 18,416

9,363,584 and 9,437,056

introduCtion : Endearlingly known as ‘Holy Mother’,

Sri Saradha Devi , the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna was born on 22 December 1853 in a poor Brahmin family in Jayrambati, a village adjoining Kamarpukur in West Bengal. Her father, Ramachandra Mukhopadhyay was a pious and kind- hearted person , and her mother, Shyma sundari devi was a loving and hard working woman.

Marriage:As a child Sarada was devoted to God, and

spent most of her time helping her mother in various household chores like caring for younger children , looking after cattle and carrying food to her father and others engaged in work in the field . She had to formal schooling ,but managed to learn the Bengali alphabet . When she was about six years old, she was married to Sri Ramakrishna according to the custom prevalent in India in those days. However , after the event , she continued to live with her parents ,while Sri Ramakrishna lived a God - intoxicated life at Dakshineshwar.

visit to daKshinesWar :-At the age of eighteen she walked all the

way to Dakshineswar to meet her husband. Sri Ramakrishna , who had immersed himself in the intense practice of several spiritual disciplines for more than twelve years, and reached the highest state of realization in which he saw God in all beings. He received Saradha Devi with great affection , and allowed her to stay with him. He taught her how to lead spiritual life while discharging her household duties . They led absolutely pure lives, and Sarada Devi served Sri Ramakrishna as his devoted wife and disciple.

life at daKshinesWar:Sri Ramakrishna looked upon

Sarada Devi as special manifestation of Divine mother of the universe. In 1872, on the night of the Phlaharini – Kali - Puja he ritualistically worshipped Sarada Devi Sarada Devi learned to look upon their disciples as her own children. The room in which she stayed at Dakshineshwar was too small to live in and had hardly any amenities. But she bore all difficulties silently and lived in contentment, serving the increasing number of devotees who came there .

siMpliCity and forbearanCe:

Although she was highly venerated for her spiritual status, and literally worshipped as the divine mother, she continued to live like a simple village mother , washing clothes, sweeping the floor, bringing water from the pond , dressing vegetables, cooking and serving food. At Jayarambati she lived with her brothers and their families . They gave her endless troubles but, she always remained calm and self-possessed,showering love and blessings on all who came into contact with her.ister Nivedita stated, “ Her Life was one long stillness of Prayer”.

Mother of all:In the history of humanity there

has never been another woman who looked upon herself as the mother of all beings, including animals and birds and spent her whole life in serving them as her children, undergoing unending sacrifice and self-denial. About her role

in the mission of Sri Ramakrishna on earth, she stated “My son, you know the master had a maternal attitude ( matru bhava) towards every one. He has left me behind to manifest that

divine motherhood in the world”.

ideal WoMan : On account of her immaculate

purity, extraordinary forbearance, selfless service , unconditional love, wisdom and spiritual illumination, Swami Vivekananda regarded Sri Sarada Devi as the ideal for woman in the modern age. He believed that with the advent of holy mother, the spiritual awakening of women in modern times had begun.

soMe sayings of holy Mother: • God is one’s very own . It is an

eternal relationship .

• Ordinary human love results in misery. Love for God bring blessedness.

• As wind removes the cloud , so the name of God destroys, the cloud of worldliness’.

• My child you have been fortunate in getting this human birth. Have intense devotion to God. One must word hard. Can anyone achieve anything without effort?

ConClusion

Under the strain of constant physical work, self-denial and repeated attacks of malaria, herr health deteriorated and she left the mortal world on 21st July 1920.

ouR aMazing Bodyblood:

An adult man’s body contains about 5 litres of blood. A woman contains about 4.3 litres. The blood travels along 100-000 Km of blood vessels which is equal to going 2.5 times round the equator. It contains 25,000,000,000 to 30,000,000,000 red cells. Red cells are made and destroyed at the rate of 2-3 million per second.

brain poWer: We lose 100,000 brain cells everyday, luckily we have 100 billion altogether.

breathing: The average person inhales 6 litres per minute

or 8640 litres a day. Average breathe is 20 a minute, you breathe 28,000 time a day.

Cells: There are 50 billion cells in your body and 3 billion

of them die every minute. You make 10 billion new white blood cells each day.

eyes: We blink about 20,000 times a day.

heart: Our heart pumps 13,640 litres of blood around

your body in a day enough to fill nearly 40,000 drink cans. An average heart beat pumps 59CC of blood. An average heart beat rate of 70 beats a minute adds up to more than 100,000 beat a day.

sleep:

In 7.5 hours of sleep. We sleep lightly for 60% of the time and deeply for 20%. The dream constitutes 20% of the time.

nerves:

There are about 13,000,000,000,000 nerve cells in your body transmitting messages at speech of 290Km/hr as fast as the world’s speediest cars.

sWeat:

You lose about 0.5 litres of water a day through 3,000,000 sweet glands. In hot climates you may lose as much as 13.5 litres a day.

MUSIC AND HEALTHResearch has shown that music has a profound

effect on your body and psyche. In fact, there’s a growing field of health care known as Music Therapy, which uses music to heal. Those who practice music therapy are finding a benefit in using music to help cancer patients, children with ADD, and others, and even hospitals are beginning to use music and music therapy to help with pain management, to help ward off depression, to promote movement, to calm patients, to ease muscle tension, and for many other benefits that music and music therapy can bring. This is not surprising, as music affects the body and mind in many powerful ways. The following are some of effects of music, which help to explain the effectiveness of music therapy.

• Brain Waves: Research has shown that music with a strong beat can stimulate brainwaves to resonate in sync with the beat, with faster beats bringing sharper concentration and more alert thinking, and aslower tempo promoting a calm, meditative state. Also, research has found that the change in brainwave activity levels that music can bring can also enable

the brain to shift speeds more easily on its own as needed, which means that music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you’ve stopped listening.

• Breathing and Heart Rate: With alterations in brainwaves comes changes in other bodily functions. Those governed by the autonomic nervous system, such as breathing and heart rate can also be altered by the changes music can bring. This can mean slower breathing, slower heart rate, and an activation of the relaxation response, among other things. This is why music and music therapy can help counteract or prevent the damaging effects of chronic stress, greatly promoting not only relaxation, but health.

• State of Mind: Music can also be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. This can help prevent the stress response from wreaking havoc on the body, and can help keep creativity and optimism levels higher, bringing many other benefits. It’s no surprise that so many are seeing music as an important tool to help the body in staying (or becoming) healthy.

pRocRaStination Procrastination means postponement of

action. It is natural for us to put off some work. We donot then realize that we are wasting our time. Time is very precious. It won’t wait for us.

If do an activity at the apt time we will get the benefit out of it. If we postpone that work to a later date it will not yield the desired result.

Children have a tendency to put off their work. They usually do not study anything till the eve of the examinations. At last, they have a lot to study, but no time to do it. When there is not enough time left to do a piece of work, we usually hurry to do it. When we there is not enough time left to do a piece of work , we usually hurry to finish it. When we do a work in hurry , we make mistakes. So , never put off till tomorrow what may be done today. Because Procrastination is the thief of time.

In Chennai, there lived a girl named Jyothi. She had an elder brother Tarun, a drunkard. Whenever her parents saved money for paying the fees for Jyothi, her brother stole it for buying liquor. With great difficulty, Jyothi completed her school education and joined a college. But she went there only for six days. Then it was the seventh day, the day to pay the term fee. Her brother, as usual, took away all the money, which had been kept for paying the fees. She begged a lot because she was greatly interested in studies and was an intelligent girl too. Then she told her parents that she was going out to a hostel. She was planning to work and manage the expenses for herself.

Jyothi got admission in a hostel, with the help of her savings. She took tuition and abacus class in the evening hours. With that money, she paid her college fees. She completed three years. In the final year, she came to know that her college was not a well-recognized college one and it would be closed and sealed, by the government from the following year onwards. So, she dropped the idea of doing her PG. She thought of going back home again. While packing she got her old file, in which she found the contact number of her school friend. She was sure that her best friend would help her in her studies.

By God’s grace, she got Amritha through phone. Jyothi’s heart was filled with joy since she heard her

best friend’s voice after long time. Jyothi replied,” Hello Amritha, I am Jyothi. How are you?” Amritha’s eyes were filled with tears of joy, and she replied, “Hi Jyothi, How are you? I am fine here in Bangalore.

Where are you now? You must have

finished your college by now! Am I right?

J y o t h i replied, “ I am

fine Amritha. I am in Chennai. I

finished my UG. I thought of doing my

PG here in this college but our college has been

closed and sealed due to some problem”.

Amritha said,” Its ok! You don’t worry about anything. You

come with your family to Bangalore. I’ll help you to get a seat here. You can

definitely get a seat out of merit”.

Lotus14

Page 17: KRS School Magazine

Jyothi said,” But . . . Amritha, now I am in a hostel. You already know that my brother is a drunkard. He did not help me in any way to continue my studies. So, I am doing a part time job to pay the fees”.

“Oh! I am sorry. Inform your parents and come to Bangalore”, Amritha said.

Jyothi replied,” It’s ok! Thank you for your great help”. “I’ll call you later”. Amritha said.

Amritha rang up to Jyothi after an hour. She said,” I have booked ticket . After you come to the station, give me a call. I’ll pick you up”.

She reached Bangalore and met Amritha. Jyothi stayed in Amritha’s home for a few days. Jyothi and Amritha got admission out of pure merit.

One Sunday, Amritha took Jyothi in her car, to have a look at Bangalore. On the way both of them saw a poster. It was a request to join a camp of social service. The date given to register suited their convenience, and they too were interested.

They went to register their names. There, they met the leader of the camp, a young girl of their age. But they couldn’t speak with her. As the next day was their exam, they rushed to their home and started their preparation.

But some thoughts about that young girl disturbed their mind and they could recognize that she was their classmate Gayatri. At that age itself, she was very much interested in social service. On the day of the camp, they both met Gayatri . Amritha said, ” Hello! I am Amritha. She is Jyothi. Are you Gayatri?” She replied, “Yes I am Gayatri. How do you know?”

Jyothi Said, “Gayu, you forgot us, but we have not forgotten you.” She said, “Yes, you are Jyothi and Amritha. I am very happy. How are you? How are your parents? Did you complete your college or doing it now?”

They replied, “ We are doing our Post Graduation here in Bangalore.”

Gayatri asked, “What about your families?” Amritha said, “My parents are here in Bangalore. But Jyothi’s parents are in Chennai. Her brother, Tarun is a drunkard. He did not allow her to continue her studies. Unable to continue her PG there, she came here”.

Gayatri replied, “I am really amazed with your thick friendship. Later, I’ll come to Chennai and

make your brother, realize his mistakes. Now we shall inaugurate this camp. Come, let us go!”

They started the camp and it went on for 6 days. On the last day of the camp, they returned to Bangalore.. Jyothi and Amritha felt proud of Gayatri for her great work. They all went to Amritha’s home to take rest.

To change Tarun , they went to Chennai. They met Jyothy’s mother and narrated everything.

Gayatri asked, “Where is Tarun?” Jyothi’s mother showed Tarun’s room to Gayatri. She went to the entrance and asked, “Excuse me, May I come in?” He was shocked to see Jyothi and another girl, with this girl. He tried to move towards his mother and investigate about this, but Gayatri blocked the way and said, “I am Gayatri, Jyothi’s friend. I am in need of help from you. Jyothi said that you have a nice heart and you’ll help everyone”. Tarun could not understand what she was speaking, but he asked, “What help do you want? I’ll do it”. She replied,” I am not going to ask any money, car, home or wealth, instead, I am going to give you good health”.

Tarun asked,” How can you give me good health? I am ready to do everything you say”.

Gayatri said, “Please stop drinking liquor. Do not be a drunkard hereafter. It’ll be good for you and those around you”. Tarun thought for a while and agreed. He asked, “You care me and say good things for my health. But I don’t know who you are! Who are you?”

Gayatri said everything right from Jyothi’s life in the hostel and their meeting in the camp. Tarun felt ashamed. His eyes were filled with tears as he realized his mistakes. He ran to his sister and hugged her. Jyothi thanked Gayatri for making Tarun realize his mistakes. Jyothi’s parents also thanked Gayatri a lot.

She stayed in Jyothi’s home for a day and left for Bangalore. Tarun, Jyothi and their parents felt very happy. Amritha and Jyothi too left for Bangalore, to complete their PG. After 2 years, they came to Chennai. Gayatri too came to Chennai and continued her service to the society. The three girls remained inseparable friends.

MatH’S anxiEty Maths anxiety is a type of fear.

Sometimes fear is merely the afraid of some unknown that lurks out there. How do you conquer this type of fear? You isolate it, examine it closely and understand what it’s made of . When you do this you’ll soon find that the fear goes away. There are some factors and feelings that make you avoid Maths. When we avoid it, we lose confidence and then s t a r t b u i l d i n g u p dread and f e a r . Actually, there is no such t h i n g as a b r a i n t y p e t h a t m a k e s o n e p e r s o n b e t t e r than another in Maths. Yes, studies show that there are different brain types, but those types just concern your approach at problem solving. Your approach can be different from another student, but it can still be just as effective. One factor that affects Math performance more than any other is confidence. Studies do show that positive thinking can improve Mathematics performance.

Study tips for Maths at home:

• Don’t just work out a problem. Draw pictures and diagrams of a process and make up stories to go along with them.

• Use sticky flags to make important things in your chapter or things you need to ask about in class. Take a look at the problems, you’ll be solving to get a preview of your goals. This gives your brain a framework to work with.

• If you come across a problem that you don’t understand, read it over a few times and try. Then walk away and do some other

work. Your brain will continue to work on the problem subconsciously.

1. Ask your teacher to solve sample problems.

2. Old tests are the best clues to future tests.

3. Practise basic Mathematic calculations in daily life.

Overcoming the fear of Maths may require asking yourself where your real fear is rooted and then ascertaining whether this fear is real or imagined.

Example : 13.10.01.

Multiply your birth date by 100.

13 x 100 = 1300.

Add the month of birth. 1300 + 10 = 1310

Multiply by 2 1310 x 2 = 2620

Add 8 2620 + 8 = 2628

Multiply by 5 2628 x 5 = 13140

Add 4 13140 + 4 = 13144

Multiply by 10 13144 x 10 = 131440

Add 4 131440 + 4 = 131444

Add the year of Birth

131444 + 01 = 131445

Subtract 444 from the answer

131445 – 444 = 131001

Answer : 13 .10.01
