Education/ClassesThank YouTHANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO MAKE the BC Community Forest Association’s Conference and AGM a great success. The weather cooperated and the 65+ del-egates felt warmly welcomed by the Village of Kaslo. Many commented on how they will be coming back soon with their families. We would like to give special appreciation to all of the accommodators and to our caterers Christa and her BlueBelle staff, Solid and his crew at the Kaslo Hotel, and to Kristy & James at the Kaslo Golf Clubhouse for great service and wonderful food. Thanks to Lynn Goldsborough and the Legion Ladies for your generous volunteer work and the ser-vice you give in our community. John Cathro, thanks for the fantastic workshop. To Suzan Hewat for incredibly fast pho-tocopying, to Jeff at Kaslo Building Supplies and Rick at Front Street Market for the contributions, to Kendall for the 4:30AM access to JVH and to the many special volunteers who are friends indeed. We would also like to acknowledge our spon-sors for their generous support. This young calico cat has been with KAAP since the winter. She was brought in with her daughter, who has since been adopt-ed. Suki must have had some bad experiences when she was abandoned; she is still very frightened of people even though she has been given the best loving care. Suki may need a home where she can be independent, going about her business while having someone to feed her and look out for her. Perhaps a nice cozy workshop or barn, with lots of mice? Suki has been spayed, tattooed, vaccinated. Please call Daryl at KAAP (250-551-1053) if you have a home for Suki. The adoption fee will be waived.

Returning board members are Joe Johnson, Eleanor Nichol, Rick Wiltse, Karma Halleran and Village Rep Molly Leathwood. At this time the Board is also pleased to announce Barry Freeman has agreed to return for another year as the Arena Manager. Our past season could not have been so successful without the generous donations of time, energy and knowledge from...• Pam Walker - for doing the audit last year• John Huges (Nakusp) and Larry Badry for your expertise with

our ice plants• Steve Scott and Jeff Davie for their willing assistance in training

the new manager

Arguably our community complex’s greatest assets with their time and expertise, they helpkeep it safe, healthy and moving forward for the better enjoyment of the whole community.

Email us (subject: ‘Friend of the Kaslo Complex’) your name and how you would like tohelp... with your strong back! a specialized skill! or a great idea that you would be willing to implement! A powerful movement of hope, healing, celebration,

and optimism.

In 2009 Asia Hoffart and her father Paul Snook took the Enbridge chal-lenge together. This year Asia will tackle the almost 300 mile trek as a solo entry. “Since our family par-ticipated in ‘09, my father became ill with skin cancer, and has con-quered just being given a clean bill of health at his 9 month check-up.

I want to help him and others, any way I can. I am a glutton for pun-ishment.” says Asia, “but I believe in the cause, so it is worth the effort.”

Nesting Birds In Th e Kaslo AreaTh is spring and early summer is the fi nal year of fi ve for

a huge Province-wide research project on nesting birds. Called the British Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas project,

this eff ort has involved many hundreds of volunteers. Lor-raine Symmes and I have teamed together to cover three “squares” each of which is 10x10 kilometers. We have al-ready identifi ed large numbers of bird species that have shown evidence of nesting, but are making a bigger than ever eff ort this last year. It will help us greatly if, when you become aware of nesting activity between Coff ee Creek and Shutty Bench, that you make contact.

Of particular interest would be nesting activity of raptors (hawks, eagles and owls). You need not make contact about the most common birds of our area (robins and chickadees)...but if you are not sure, please err on the side of calling!

A long life, fi lled with amazing changes, now it’s time to rest.Ole was born in a small farming community in Denmark called Bollehede Mark. As a young man he apprenticed as a bricklayer and became a master mason. Later he went to technical school (college) to study civil engineering and was employed in the Public Works Department for the City of Aalborg for several years.

In 1943 he married his longtime sweetheart, Nanna Pedersen. They started a family and life was good. After WWII, his lifelong dream of travel was realized. In 1950 Canada opened its borders to immigrants with skills other than farming, and Ole saw opportunity. With much opposition from family, Ole and Nanna emigrated to Canada, arriving in Edmonton, Alberta with two small children and only $100 cash, not profi cient in the English language, but ready to work!

Despite hard times, Ole supported his family, fi rst by hiring himself out as a bricklayer, then in 1955 starting his own construction company with a partner, Otto Odgaard. They employed 20-25 people and built many brick and stone buildings in Edmonton and area.

The years between 1955 through to retirement in 1981 were busy with work, family, friends and community

service. Ole was active in the Danish Lutheran Church in Edmonton, the Alberta Masonry Institute, the Scandinavian Businessmen’s Club and various other organizations. Days often started at 6 am and lasted until 11 pm. There was very little time for vacations, except for the holiday that landed Ole and Nanna in the West Kootenay in 1972. They discovered Kaslo and fell in love with the town, deciding that it would be a perfect place to retire. At that time, they started looking for property to build on and in 1979 commenced construction of their house. Ole and Nanna moved to Kaslo permanently in 1981.

Still interested in community service, Ole joined a group that formed the Kaslo Bay Marine Club and was on the board of directors for some years. He was also active in the Kaslo Seniors’ Association until the last year of his life. He served as the association treasurer, looked after hall rentals and organized a bridge club. Known around town as “the old guy in the white hat”, he was respected for his views, tolerated for his eccentricities and loved by his family.

Ole is survived by his wife, Nanna; daughter Anita Thomas and son Klaus Knudsen (Susan); grandchildren Mike Thomas (Linnea), Karen Thomas, Kyle (Kristina) Knudsen, Chris (Laura) Knudsen; great grandchildren Asha Thomas, Daren Thomas-Dertell, Hanna Thomas-Hofmann, Adysan Knudsen and Fleicia Knudsen. Ole has one remaining sibling in Denmark, Karen Hermann (Ole was predeceased by two others), and many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.

With a respect for his ancestors and his progeny, Ole believed in this above all:

“Science has established two facts meaningful for human welfare: fi rst, the foundations of the structure of human personality is laid down in early childhood; and second, the chief engineer in charge of this construction is the family.”

Meyer Francis Nimkoff

May Ole rest in the knowledge that he lived as he believed and never, ever wavered. As per his wishes, there will be no service at this time. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date, to be announced by Nanna Knudsen and family.
