BOOK WEEK DRESS UP DAY The theme for this year‟s book week has been „Books light up our world‟ and thanks to all our fantastic families our world was much brighter and colourful on Monday.

It was great to see so many students dressed up as their favourite book characters for our annual Book Week Parade. We had Wally, Cinderella, the characters from „The Outsiders‟, the Queen of Hearts and Elmer the Elephant just to name a few.

As part of the book week activities our students have also been busy beavers down in the library at lunchtimes with a range of fun craft activities related to the book week theme, thanks to Mrs Koster and Miss Livingstone.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan As we come to the end of Week Six we have a mere 14 school weeks to the end of the year and a great deal of work to do before we get there! Attendance is again (still) a hot topic that needs to be talked about. Your school identifies student attendance as a priority because as educators we know the problem poor attendance causes to a students learning journey. We also make it a priority because the Department of Education prioritises attendance over almost everything else. And if it ended there we could say “it‟s just the teachers”, but the Government and Cabinet prioritise attendance also. Their motivation is a little more prosaic; sound economic modelling shows Government the longer term cost to our society when children leave school with less of the education than taxpayer dollars have paid for. Our society is poorer when our young people complete their mandatory education with lower outcomes and fewer options ahead of them. Quite recently the State Ombudsman again criticised the Government for not doing more to ensure poor attendance rates across the State were addressed. Naturally this criticism develops pressure and together they both flow „downhill‟, ultimately arriving on my desk. Parents hold legal and moral authority over their children and therefore you will decide what is best for your child – my legal and moral obligation is to remind you that each day a child is away is a lost learning opportunity and one that often cannot be recaptured. NAPLAN - A preliminary review of the whole school data has been quite reassuring and we will spend time now analysing these results in detail. Individual student reports will be posted home in tomorrows‟ mail so they should be with you no later than mid-week. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Art Auction this Friday evening – don‟t forget the cheque book!

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor Science Week Last week students were involved in lunchtime activities to celebrate National Science Week. The students were very engaged which was wonderful to see and a big thank you must go to Mr Melville and Ms Whyte for all their hard work. Book Week Dress up Day Everyone looked amazing! Thank you to all the students, parents and staff who participated and helped to make all of the wonderful costumes. Thank you to Miss Livingstone & Mrs Koster for running all of the activities in the Library this week. LIBRARY NEWS The pick for the week for Lower Primary MY TWO BLANKETS By Irena Kobald & Freya Blackwood My Two Blankets tells the story of Cartwheel, a girl who has moved to a strange new place, where nobody speaks her language. This story is for all who have experienced change. It is about learning new ways of speaking, new ways of living, new ways of being. A beautiful and poignant tale, it is exquisitely brought to life by award-winning illustrator Freya Blackwood. This book is the winner of the CBCA 2015 Picture Book of the Year.

The pick for Lower/Middle Primary THE CLEO STORIES By Libby Gleeson & Freya Blackwood The Necklace & The Present. Cleo desperately wants a necklace. Her parents say special presents are only for birthdays…but Cleo doesn‟t want to wait. In the second story, it‟s her mum‟s birthday and Cleo doesn‟t know what to give her-until she has the best idea of all. This book is the winner of the CBCA 2015 Young Readers Book of the Year.

A very special „Thank you‟ to Mrs Hilder for bringing the fairy tale called THE TINDER BOX by Hans Christian Andersen all the way from Denmark where she was recently on holidays. Mrs Hilder‟s Year 1 class presented me with the lovely book at assembly last week, to become part of our wonderful collection in the Library.

BANNERS IN THE TERRACE Last term Miss Livingstone and the Year 9/10 Art Class were responsible for designing and creating the 2015 „Banner in the Terrace‟ entry for the Shire of Kojonup. This is an annual competition where local shires are asked to create and paint a banner that represents the place it comes from. The design chosen for this year included the Wool Wagon, the Rose Maze and the stone Koja, as well as silhouetted family images. It now returns to be displayed in our main street after being seen by thousands of people travelling along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces in Perth between the dates of Sunday 26

th July to Saturday 8

th August 2015.

A special thanks goes to Mrs Koster for her valuable guidance in the production of the banner.
