those in need of a boost.

United Way’s Tocqueville Society is the giving level reserved for our most generous and community-minded contributors. Tocqueville members represent those who are willing to truly invest in the welfare of our community. As our community’s philanthropic leaders,

they understand the significant role they fulfill as individuals supporting the business of caring for our most vulnerable citizens and solutions for the ever-evolving human needs we

encounter within our community.

The 14th Annual United Way of Central Oklahoma Snowflake

Gala was held on January 22, 2016. Each year at the gala, the

campaign fundraising totals are announced.

Our 2015 Campaign raised a grand total of $21.6 million,

thanks to the hard work of our Campaign Co-Chairs, Judy Love

and Mike Turpen, along with the e�orts of our dedicated

Campaign Cabinet members.

David L. Thompson was presented with United Way’s highest

honor, the 2016 Dick Clements Lifetime Achievement Award.

GIVING THROUGH THE GENERATIONS

The family of Lee Allan Smith has a legacy of giving back to our community, not only monetarily but they give back countless volunteer hours sharing much needed expertise to the nonpro�t sector.

Lee Allan’s long career in sales, advertising and event planning has placed their family at the center of some of the state’s most impressive galas and celebrations. Lee Allan can make friends with anybody, and that ability has placed him also at the epicenter of central Oklahoma’s most in�uential circles.

But as the center of his family, Lee Allan has carried on a legacy of giving for which his parents, Florence Phelps and William Smith, laid the groundwork. His father was a salesman and a musician in a band. His mother was a dedicated Presbyterian who raised four boys, and taught her sons the value of hard work and to be proud Americans.

Lee Allan has been a faithful contributor to United Way of Central Oklahoma and an invaluable community ambassador for the organization since 1956, encouraging his in�uential network of friends and colleagues to rally around helping the area’s most needy. In the early 1980s, Lee Allan served on the Board and in 1983, as Campaign Chair.

In 2002, Lee Allan was presented United Way of Central Oklahoma’s most prestigious recognition, the Richard H. Clements Lifetime Achievement Award. His good friend, Ray Ackerman said of him, “Lee Allan Smith is the only person Oklahoma City can’t do without.”

Lee Allan was also instrumental in the naming of a popular area of Bricktown, “United Way Plaza,” which is paved with bricks honoring Tocqueville members at the time of its inception. Lee Allan loves to incorporate important community organizations when planning new endeavors.

His wife, DeAnn and three daughters, DeLee Smith, Jennifer Kiersch and Wendy House have spent the past �ve decades watching Lee Allan make tangible and intangible imprints on the state he so loves.

“He is so proud of our city and state and loves more than anything to do things for thecommunity,” said his daughter, Jennifer Kiersch. “I think that makes us feel the same way.”

Like her father, Jennifer continually performs her civic duties. She’s served on nonpro�t boards including Special Care, DeadCenter and OKC Beautiful. Her sister Wendy has served on theIntegris Gala Committee and Heritage Hall’s Alumni Committee. She has also been involved with the Boy Scouts of America, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Girl Scouts of America, Make a Wish Foundation and Flight for Sight. DeLee has been a member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City. All three sisters are members of Kappa Alpha Theta, with Wendy currently serving on the Advisory Board.

After the tornado disasters of 2013, Lee Allan and Jennifer were instrumental in coordinating the sold-out “Healing the Heartland” concert that brought in millions of dollars to help those who were a�ected by the tornadoes.

Lee Allan and his family are driven by a great love of Oklahoma and a desire to see it become an even better place to live.

Loyal Contributors are those who have been contributing to any

United Way for 10 years or more. Longtime donors to the United Way make significant improvements in the lives of people throughout our

community because they give consistently. In the 93 years United

Way of Central Oklahoma has existed, we have been fortunate to

cultivate some of the most loyal and generous donors. Because of these

loyal contributions, United Way is able to invest in the sustainable

change we all want to see in our community.

Major General Stanley Newman holds the distinction of being United Way of Central Oklahoma’s most loyal contributor on record, giving for nearly 70 years.

Major General Newman started giving to United Way in 1948 while serving in the military. Mr. Newman was a P-51 Mustang pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and said that all service men were encouraged to give to United Way.

When he moved to central Oklahoma, he began contributing to his new local United Way. “When I got out of the service, I just kept it up because it takes care of so many absolutely necessary things

that have to be done for the people who haven’t been as for-tunate as I have,” he said.

“My religion encourages charity,” Mr. Newman said.

He is Jewish and the Hebrew word for the obligation of charitable giving, Tzedakah, is a fundamental part of the Jewish way of life. He has imparted this belief in giving back to his community on his family.

With three children, three grandchildren and �ve great-grandchildren, Mr. Newman has much for which to be thankful. He said that he’s encouraged his large family to be thankful for their blessings and to have a heart for the community.

Central Oklahoma has a special niche for young adults aspiring to be the leaders of tomorrow. United Way o�ers young adults contributing at a level of $500 and above a unique opportunity to join their own a�nity group, Emerging Leaders. This group not only contributes financially, but is also dedicated to giving back with their time.

Members participate in numerous community volunteer activities throughout the year, including an Easter egg hunt for low-income families and a holiday dance for seniors at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City’s Trinity Garden Apartments.

Emerging Leaders also enjoy network with peers and learn valuable lessons from community leaders. Through the Lunches with Leaders series, members heard from established business leaders, including campaign co-chairs Mike Turpen and Judy Love, and Keith Mitchell, COO of OG&E. Emerging Leaders also connected with United Way Partner Agency representatives and directors such as Barbara Butner, Calm Waters and Mike Slack, Circle of Care.

The United Way of Central Oklahoma Women’s Leadership Society unites women — their time, talent and resources — into a powerful network of individuals devoted to enhancing and strengthening intergeneration opportunities within our community. With an annual donation of $2,500 or more, these women leverage the collective power of women supporting United Way of Central Oklahoma.

The Women’s Leadership Society provides a number of educational opportunities with renowned speakers and researchers on topics such as generational giving habits and issues that currently a�ect central Oklahoma, including mental health and homelessness. In addition, the Society hosts events that provide a benefit to the community.

A nationally-recognized group of female philanthropists, Women’s Leadership Society’s ultimate focus is to develop new leadership for central Oklahoma through learning opportunities, mentoring and a shared vision of community engagement.
