A Year Full of “Firsts”Have you ever heard the saying, “There’s a first time for everything?” This phrase is often used sarcastically or in an otherwise light-hearted manner. At the UnityPoint Health – Allen Foundation, we experienced many “firsts” in 2017, but this is no joke. Your gifts have made a monumental IMPACT on health care in our community, and we are excited to share with you what we have accomplished…together.

We have established some new and innovative events; we have welcomed many new donors; and many of you have pioneered new ways to give.

In October, we were more than pleased to be joined with roughly 250 of our closest friends for Allen’s first ever Hops for Hospice event. The following month, the Allen Foundation took part in Giving Tuesday for the first time. Giving Tuesday is a global day of philanthropy fueled by the power of social media.

For the second straight year, over 1,500 donors gave in support of health care and health care education at Allen. Many first-time donors were a part of our success. And all 1,500-plus should have received a thank you call during our Thank A Donor phone-a-thon in January.

With an increased online presence, regular tours of Allen Hospital and Allen College and a focus on building stronger relationships with those who so generously support the Allen Foundation, we have seen a year full of “firsts.” When coupled with the strong foundation already established at UnityPoint Health – Waterloo, we feel encouraged with the future of health care services in the Cedar Valley.

Sincerely,

Welcome

UnityPoint Health – Prairie ParkwayWhile the vision for UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway began many years ago, it became a reality for team members and the community we serve in January of 2017.

As we celebrated the one-year anniversary of all services being open at the new facility, we began to truly understand the impact we’re making.

The goal of Prairie Parkway is to provide one stop and one convenient location for outpatient preventative care designed to help patients and families live a healthy life.

At Prairie Parkway, pediatrics and pediatric therapy were introduced as new services. Additional specialty services now operate under the same roof to help fulfill our promise of care coordination.

After just one full year of service, Prairie Parkway has seen 106,139 total visits and a total of 32,354 unique patients served.

To take a tour, inquire about naming opportunities, or to learn more about the services available at Prairie Parkway, please contact the Foundation at (319) 235-3960.

UnityPoint Health – Waterloo Purchases Marshalltown Hospital and Health ServicesOn May 1st of 2017, Central Iowa Healthcare began operating under a new name, UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown. In March, an asset purchase agreement was submitted to finalize a plan to purchase all assets including an acute care hospital, emergency department, four primary care clinics and an outpatient center. The clinics are located in Conrad, Marshalltown, State Center and Tama-Toledo.

The agreement included commitment from UnityPoint Health – Waterloo to continue all health care services in Marshalltown without interruption during the bankruptcy proceedings and after the transition was completed.

“We are happy to ensure that quality health care from providers whom patients in the Marshalltown community know and trust will continue. UnityPoint Health is thankful for this opportunity to strengthen Marshalltown’s regional role as an employer, economic engine and center for health care,” said Pam Delagardelle, UnityPoint Health – Waterloo, President and CEO.

“We’re looking forward to the future and the great things we can accomplish together. Please help me welcome UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown to the UnityPoint Health family,” said Delagardelle.

Dr. Jerry Durham Leaves Lasting Imprint at Allen CollegeThe man behind Allen College’s impressive expansion and growth since his arrival in 2005, retired at the end of 2017.

It was a productive tenure for Allen College Chancellor Jerry Durham, as the College saw increased enrollment in each of those years, contributing to the healthcare industry in Northeast Iowa, across the state and beyond.

Durham’s legacy is cemented by the expansion of programs, the increase in enrollment and the overall health of the institution. Fall enrollment at Allen College was 622 – having more than doubled since Durham’s arrival. Additionally, during his career, Dr. Durham has always kept the needs of the students at the forefront of his efforts. In 2010, scholarship assistance provided by donors and the College was about $200,000. In 2017, that scholarship assistance tripled to almost $700,000 awarded to students.

He’s helped develop multiple programs in nursing and health sciences which are now being offered, including masters and doctorate programs. Under Durham’s leadership, Allen College implemented Iowa’s only accelerated baccalaureate nursing program; opened a graduate program in occupational therapy; initiated five new health sciences programs; implemented five additional tracks in its Master of Science in Nursing program; and started doctoral programs in nursing and health professions education.

We ask you to join us in making sure that Dr. Durham’s dedication and leadership continues to be celebrated for years to come. An Allen College alum has already committed a generous matching gift of $50,000 with a goal of raising $100,000 to name a room in the new Nursing and Health Sciences Simulation Laboratory in Dr. Durham’s honor. Or gifts may be directed to an endowed scholarship in his name.

Durham’s last official day at Allen College was January 1, 2018. Congratulations to Dr. Durham on a well-deserved retirement.

“IT’S VERY REWARDING to see these students enter our programs, become practitioners and enter the health care workforce. That’s the goal of this college.”

- Dr. Jerry Durham

Congratulations!

Allen College Names New PresidentDr. Jared Seliger has been selected to serve as the 3rd President of Allen College.

Dr. Seliger has served as the director of Allen College’s nuclear medicine technology program for the past nine years and as associate chancellor for the past two years. Dr. Seliger received his Bachelor of Science degree from Loras College, a certificate in nuclear medicine technology from the University of Iowa, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Iowa State University.

Seliger is dedicated to ensure Allen College continues to fulfill its mission as an institution committed to preparing exceptional healthcare professionals through educational programs of excellence; to developing and sustaining a diverse community of learners, faculty, and staff; and to promoting community service, scholarships, and lifelong learning.

“In the past several years, Dr. Jared Seliger has served Allen College in a variety of capacities. Now in a new role, we look forward to the continued growth and success of Allen College under the leadership of Dr Seliger,” shared JoAn Headington, Chair of the Allen College Board of Trustees.

A native of the Cedar Valley, Dr. Seliger and his wife, Miranda, are the parents of a one-year-old daughter.

UnityPoint Clinic Introduces New Urgent Care ModelA new kind of urgent care has come to the Cedar Valley. In May of 2017, UnityPoint Clinic Urgent Care – San Marnan opened with a focus on a time-saving process designed to enhance the urgent care experience.

The difference is in the handoffs, or lack thereof, as concierge service features a specially trained clinical care attendant. The medical professional greets each individual as he or she enters the clinic and remains with that same patient throughout the visit. Clinical care attendants are trained to do everything from registration, vitals, symptom assessment and laboratory or x-ray services while working with a nurse practitioner or physician for diagnosis and treatment. This bypasses the time spent transferring care from one professional to another.

On-site prescription medications are available to eliminate an extra stop at the pharmacy. Online reservations are available to shorten the amount of time spent at the clinic.

The experience also includes personal and thoughtful amenities like complimentary ice packs, warm blankets, hot tea and WiFi. Think of it as the cure for the common waiting room.

While providing faster care in a new convenient location, UnityPoint Clinic remains dedicated to offering high quality health care to the community.

Since introducing the new model at the San Marnan location, UnityPoint Clinic has opened an additional location offering the same services at the new North Crossing development located near Allen Hospital. Additionally, two existing urgent care locations at the United Medical Park and at UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway, have also adopted the new care model.

“People are busy – work, school, kids’ activities and everything else that fills our day make it challenging to find time for healthcare,” said Pam Delagardelle, UnityPoint Health – Waterloo President and CEO. “We want to offer another option to meet our patients’ needs and help them get the care they need to feel better and get back to

their lives.”

In addition to treating non-emergency conditions such as cold, flu, sore throat and minor sports injuries, the

clinic offers additional services, including school/sports physicals, flu shots and after-hours

occupational health services. Learn more at unitypoint.org/waterloo/urgent-care.

FIRST EVER

Hops for Hospice Event is a Major SuccessNearly 250 people attended Allen’s first ever Hops for Hospice event in late October at Allen College. The event featured a sampling of craft beers from a wide variety of vendors, great food and music provided by the Brazilian 2wins. Thanks to a lead gift from Karsyn’s Krusaders, plus support from many sponsors, donors and attendees, nearly $45,000 was raised through the event.

The purpose of the inaugural event was to raise funds in support of building a second Hospice Suite. Funding for a first suite came three years ago from the Willis & Patricia Hansen Charitable Foundation. Due to continued increases in the patient census, the need for a second suite was identified.

Those who have utilized the current suite are very grateful for the accommodation during such an emotionally difficult time. Steve Cusher remembers his time spent in the existing Hospice Suite with his mother, “A year ago, my mother was placed in Hospice at Allen. My family couldn’t have asked for a more functional space. We were able to say our goodbyes in a calm setting. The Allen Hospice Suite allowed us to have our space and privacy. The suite and the care offered by Allen gave my family the opportunity to concentrate our limited time with my mother. We could not have asked for anything better during our family’s time of need.”

Ongoing fundraising continues for the new Hospice Suite and plans for the 2018 Hops for Hospice event are well under way. Once all necessary funds are secured and the construction is complete, the new area will be dedicated in memory of Samantha Weber, a former hospice nurse who lost her life in 2016. Many of Weber’s family and friends have shown their generosity in support of the suite.

We are now over halfway to our fundraising goal for the second suite! If you would like to help, join us on October 12th for the second Annual Hops for Hospice event. Gifts toward the Hospice Suite can also be made directly to the Foundation as well and recognition opportunities will also be available within the suite.

Employee Giving Campaign

Giving Back is Easier Than EverEmployees and clinicians of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo give of themselves every day. Many provide a caring touch and medical expertise, while others indirectly help patients through a variety of different roles. Aside from this great service to provide an exceptional patient experience, employees also support our mission financially.

Each year, the Foundation leads an employee giving campaign encouraging Allen team members to give back to an area of the Hospital, Allen College or other affiliated entity. The Foundation also promotes the Cedar Valley United Way through the campaign as a partner for overall community good in the Cedar Valley. We are so fortunate to have a very generous and caring group of people working within our organization.

With an interest in making the process as easy as possible, the Foundation staff organized the ability for employees to donate or pledge their gift online. Many could make their gift right from their computer or phone in a quick and easy fashion. Nearly one-third of givers chose this new option in 2017.

Additionally in 2017, the One Hour Club was introduced. The One Hour Club gave employees the opportunity to donate personal time off (PTO). Members of the new club pledged to give one hour of PTO per pay period for the 2018 calendar year for a total of 26 donated hours. The cash value of that PTO then goes to the Foundation as a tax-deductible contribution. In its inaugural year, the One Hour Club has seen 28 members join on with hopes of doubling the number of participant in 2018.

In 2017 alone, over $56,000 was given by team members with an additional $33,000 contributed in support of the Cedar Valley United Way, while many employees also continued to pay on existing pledges. In total, since kicking off the For Allen For You campaign in 2015, UnityPoint Health employees have pledged over $940,000 to support the capital campaign.

On behalf of the Allen Foundation and the patients, families and students that we support, we sincerely thank the UnityPoint Health – Waterloo employees for their ongoing generosity.

#GivingTuesday Participation Yields Big Results#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

The Allen Foundation decided to join the movement and use #GivingTuesday as a platform to raise funds for the much needed expansion of the Birthing Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The goal for the day was to reach 122 donors in order to match the record number of babies born at Allen in August of 2017. That goal was achieved with exactly 122 donors in one day, supporting UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital.

Additionally, OB/GYN Dr. Bilal Kaaki matched all gifts made that day up to $5,000, while fellow physician Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj promoted the day through live videos on Facebook and an interview on the noon news. Thanks to their generosity and the generosity of another 120 individuals, nearly $40,000 was raised, in ONE day!

Thank you to the Birthing Center, NICU and Pediatrics Unit staff, the Foundation Board and all of our supporters for making the day great. Be sure to visit and “Like” the UnityPoint Health – Waterloo Facebook page at www.facebook.com/UnityPointWaterloo, and be on the lookout for information on #GivingTuesday 2018.

Health care is ever-evolving. In order to keep up with change, Allen Hospital and Allen College must be flexible and willing to change course when it makes sense for the patient, family or student. This same flexibility is important for the Allen Foundation as well. In 2017, your support allowed the Foundation to provide nearly $1.6 million to Allen Hospital, Allen College and other UnityPoint Health entities located in the Waterloo region. Below are just a few of the many impacts that your gifts helped provide.

• Echocardiography machines used for testing and evaluating cardiac patients

• Nearly $700,000 in Allen College student scholarships and awards

• Boppy Pillows used to help new mothers when breastfeeding

• Renovations, technology updates and furniture at Allen College’s new McElroy Hall building

• Establishment of the CenteringPregnancy program, a support group of expecting mothers

• Continued service of the Allen College Engagement & Salvation Army Partnership (ACE-SAP) Free Clinic

• Ongoing professional development of staff

• Fulfilling many end-of-life wishes for hospice patients and their families

• New exam lights at the Wound Clinic

• Complimentary transportation for low-income patients

• And much more!!

Remembering Pauline BarrettLast year our community lost a good friend in Mrs. Pauline Barrett. Mrs. Barrett made countless contributions to the Cedar Valley through her giving of time, talent and treasure. Many know Barrett as a philanthropist, supporting many causes. One friend of Barrett’s shared that it may be easier to list the organizations in the Cedar Valley that Pauline did not support, rather than sharing all that she did contribute to in some way.

At Allen, Pauline’s name is prominently placed on buildings and rooms at both the hospital and at Allen College. Barrett’s gift to the UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital emergency department and the Allen Heart and Vascular Center was one of the largest private donations in Cedar Valley history. And thanks to her generous gift to the ongoing For Allen For You capital campaign, UnityPoint Health will name the expanded neonatal intensive care unit in her honor, once complete.

One of the most wonderful things about Pauline’s generosity, is that it has inspired others to give back as well. Pauline was an amazingly generous woman, who lived a full life, but will be missed dearly.

The impact of Mrs. Barrett’s passion to support health care needs in the Cedar Valley can still be felt today.

Donate to EducateEach year, the Allen College Alumni Association hosts Donate to Educate, a benefit supporting students through scholarships, educational opportunities, and campus enhancements.

The 2017 event featured a handcrafted dollhouse constructed by former Allen Hospital CEO Larry Pugh, a pearl earrings set and a sapphire and diamond necklace all up for raffle, coupled with dozens of silent auction items. Nearly 100 guests enjoyed socializing, a nice dinner and an update on Allen College. The event collected over $9,000 in support of Allen College students.

To learn more about how you can participate in this annual event, contact Beth Sullivan at (319) 226-2016.

Allen Foundation Grant Program Continues to Make an IMPACTFor each of the past three years, the Allen Foundation has set aside $50,000 of unrestricted funds allowing Hospital team members the opportunity to utilize philanthropy in their area. These IMPACT Grants are awarded to Hospital departments for programs, equipment and other needs that further the mission, vision and values of UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital. Ultimately, the purpose is to enable team members, physicians and volunteers to enhance the patient experience.

Grant applications are vetted by the IMPACT Allen Hospital Committee and ultimately voted upon by the Foundation Board. Over the years, the program has helped in replacing an electric scooter for use by Hospital visitors, purchased lift chairs for several different departments and provided Boppy Pillows to help new mothers when nursing. Requests have been awarded for as little as $100 and as much as $10,000, with a total of nearly $140,000 making an impact for our patients.

In 2017, the Foundation introduced Champion Excellence Grants to help fund professional development opportunities for staff as well. Both clinical and non-clinical team members have recommended training and educational opportunities that allow for professional growth. Ultimately, these opportunities allow Allen employees to better serve patients, visitors and students.

One of the first recipients of a Champion Excellence Grant was the Professional Development team to help establish a Nurse Residency Program. This program helps to tackle the transition from academics to the working world, as this adjustment can be difficult for a new graduate. The Residency Program provides additional in-depth education regarding certain aspects of a nursing career.

Many of the participants feel that the new program helps to answer questions that they didn’t even know to ask when first hired. One participant recently shared, “I really appreciate having a session where as new workers we can actually express feelings and concerns we are having and address them.”

Together we are able to make an impact. Thank you to those who have applied. Together, we are able to put your great ideas to work!

Impacting Patients and Staff

Thanking our DonorsThank-A-Donor day was held at Allen College in November of 2017. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, students were encouraged to write a thank you note to generous College donors who contribute to scholarships, building projects, and campus enhancements. For Allen College students, this event created awareness for the large impact gifts have on their education and to the overall success of the College. Nearly 100 hand-written notes were collected and sent to donors to show appreciation.

In addition to this stewardship event, Allen College students also take part in other ongoing activities to show College donors their appreciation. Students have conducted a phone-a-thon with the sole purpose of calling donors and thanking them and each year scholarship recipients have an opportunity to thank their scholarship donor firsthand at a reception. All of these activities are organized to show our donors just how much they matter to our organization.
