Step 1Measure and draw up the spaceAll your planning - and therefore the success of your new kitchen - is based on your measurements. Here’s how to get them right. There’s graph paper and a checklist at the back of this brochure.

You should draw a front-on and bird’s eye view of each wall.

This is where you need to measure:

Take your measurements in millimetres (mm) because it’s what manufacturers use.

Start here

1. Measure from the floor to the ceiling (see image A)

2. Then also measure the distance from wall to wall (see image A)

3. Measure from the corner to the door(s) frames (see image A)

4. Now measure each window and door from the frame, plus their distance from the floor, the ceiling, and the corner of the room (see image B)

5. Make a note of everything that sticks out into the room, such as switches and pipes.There’s a checklist on the graph paper

6. Finally, note what can and can’t be moved, and what you’d like to stay

Because walls aren’t always completely square, especially in older houses, it’s a good idea to take multiple measurements for each surface.

Step 2Plan what goes where

The Working Zones

Plan your kitchen around the idea of a working triangle of three zones, which we describe below. This is about having what you use the most in easy relationship to each other. Each zone should ideally be equal in distance from each other, and the things you use least can go furthest out of the triangle.

Food Storage Zone Includes the fridge, freezer and dry storage

Consider the amount of storage you’ll need, including the size of the fridge and freezer. A worktop near the fridge is really handy for unpacking the shopping, and for cooking.

Think about your working triangle

Improve accessibility with pull-out cabinets, carousels and corner options, including floor and ceiling larder cupboards.

Now the dream can start becoming reality. There’s lots to think about, including what you’d like to keep and what you want to replace. Here are our practical tips. If you feel you need some advice at any point, our design consultants will be happy to work with you on drawing up a perfect plan. Just ask in store. It’s free.

Cooking Zone Includes the oven, hob, microwave and where you cook

It’s handy to have the cooking zone close to the sink so you’re not carrying hot things far. Allow worktop space for food preparation and utensils.

Washing Zone The sink and dishwasher

Plan everything that needs plumbing next to each other and/or along the same wall. Keep the fridge close to the sink for washing fruit and veg. Also, keeping the worktop above the dishwasher free of appliances leaves space for stacking and unloading dishes.

Always start planning from the corner outwards. A closed corner base unit needs to be stepped out 125mm and a closed corner wall unit stepped out 25mm.

The best place for preparing food? The work surface between the hob and the sink.

Make sure the distance between opposite rows of cabinets is wide enough that both doors can open fully at the same time. Where this gap cannot be achieved, consider using wall units instead of base units as they’re shallower. Allow for 800mm minumum walkthrough clearance.

Finding things in your kitchen is easy when groceries and utensils are in fully extendable drawers and a pull-out pantry.

Most people like to have the sink under the window. Check that yours does not open inwards, as it could get blocked by the tap.

A sink against a wall or at the end of a row of cabinets limits the amount of space you have to cook, prep, and hold dirty pots.

Put the dishwasher close to the sink and draining board to minimise spills when unloading and loading.

Fit a decor panel between a cabinet and the wall so drawers and doors can open fully.

Overhangs of 300mm or less do not need extra support.

Leave space for taking hot pans off the hob and putting them down quickly on the side. Always use a trivet to protect your work surface.

When installing your hood above your hob, follow the manufacturer’s recommended height guide. Ask us if you have questions.

An oven next to the wall limits your workspace and puts your walls at risk from heat and stains.

Keep your pots, pans and utensils near the oven so that they’re within easy reach.

Putting your hob and oven in separate places gives more space for cooking. An elevated oven means you don’t have to bend down to use it. However, it will use up worktop space in a small kitchen - opt for a built-under oven if worktop space is a priority

Plan the height of the wall cabinets so that they don’t block the view over the worktop.

How to fit a kitchen worktop,

sink & tap

Do it right When planning how to fit your worktop, always make the best use of the factory-cut edges. These will always be perfectly square cuts, so use these when making joins in the corners Carefully measure and mark out saw guidelines and fixing points to help ensure accuracy

Planning & preparation When choosing your kitchen worktop, consider the different materials available. Wood, granite, composite and laminate are the most popular. However, each material needs to be cut and treated differently, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions In this leaflet, the worktop pictured is pre-cut laminate, but wood and some composites can be fitted in the same way. If you need to trim the worktop, mark a cutting line on the underside with a pencil, double check the measurements, and then cut using a power saw. Use a file or sandpaper to remove any rough edges. It’s best to contact a professional tradesperson if you need to cut or fit stone or granite worktops

Worktops usually overhang base units. The worktop in this leaflet is 600mm deep, providing a 10mm overhang at the front. It has been cut to allow a 20mm overhang at the ends When deciding which taps to buy, take into consideration your sink unit. To accommodate mixer taps, your sink unit only needs one tap hole. For separate hot and cold taps, it needs to have two holes Make sure the water supply is turned off before you remove an old sink and tap, or fit new ones

Staying safe Make sure your worktop is firmly secured when sawing or drilling When using a hacksaw or power saw, wear safety goggles and a dust

mask and make sure the room is well ventilated Wear safety goggles when drilling Face masks should also be used when cutting laminate surfaces as

they are made of chipboard and will release dust when cut. When using adhesive, ensure you protect nearby surfaces and open a window for ventilation

If replacing an old sink and tap, make sure you turn off the water to the area before attempting to remove them. Also, avoid lying directly underneath when removing the old sink, as small parts may fall down during the process

base cabinet

Do it right

Make sure you don’t over-tighten the screws as this can damage your

cabinets. For this reason, it’s best not to use an electric screwdriver

Be sure to use the provided fixings and guide holes

Whilst it is possible to fit cabinets on your own, ask for a helping hand

when fitting or moving large cabinets

Planning & preparation

All of our ‘Ready To Fit’ kitchen cabinets come prepared for you to

assemble at home. Bear in mind that fitting instructions may vary

depending on the design, so be sure to always read the manufacturer’s

instructions that will be provided in the pack

Before you start assembling the cabinets, lay all the parts out on the

floor. This is a good way to check you have everything you need and

to get a sense of how the parts will fit together

Empty the provided fittings into a bowl or keep them sealed in their

plastic bags so they don’t get lost
