The brief for the Pi Restaurant outlined that the site was already an established members’only restaurant and bar, our challenge was to replan the space to incorporate a public diningarea.

The Restaurant was set in a split-level basement sothe lack of natural lightprovided the opportunityto use some spectacular lighting.

I created two distinct areas,a light, glossy members’ area with a bar and barseating. The second lower-level is a dark, low-litpublic dining space. Eachtable is individually litwith it’s own cluster oflights to provide a moreintimate dining experience, even for those who are sat at tables in the centre ofthe space.

With architectural detailssuch as the sloping ceilingsand the central catwalkhelp to create the glamorous& sparkling atmosphere ofthe Pi Restaurant.

My proposal for a donor wall in Eastpark School for childrenwith learning disabilities wasshort listed as one of the designsfor the site.

The wall was to be set in the central lobby of the school. Thiswas a double height space withglass doors to the school’s gardens and a skylight from whichan existing colourful sculpturehung.

The space available was limited to four surfaces as doors and corridors led off this centrallobby.

I wanted to create an interactivewall that would interest the pupils of the school as well as serving the purpose of giving recognition to the people who haddonated to the school. Instead of simply creating a piece that would enhance the aesthetics of the space, I wanted to incorporatetechnology - the school embraced technology by using electronicwhite boards in the classrooms.

This resulted in the smoothbrushed-aluminium unit with hexagonal holes which would lightup in reaction to motion. As eachhexagon lit up, it would play a sound recording of the names ofthe people who donated to the school, these would only be heardif your ear was placed close toeach lit hexagon. This provideda fun, interactive way of whatwould otherwise be a list of names.
