Kirschen Individual Tools

Kirschen brand tools are made in Germany by the Wilhelm Schmitt Company. They are one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers in the world with production going back as far as 1858. Over many years the company has developed its own special high carbon steel (made to a closely guarded secret recipe). The blades are hardened and tempered over the full length and each blade is fi tted with a tough hornbeam handle that is octagonal in shape which is not only comfortable in the hand but also prevents the tool from rolling off the bench. The illustrations of sweeps shown here are on a 1:1 scale and are therefore the impression the tool’s edge would make if pressed into the page. However, the hand forging process may make for some very slight variations.

This handy set of carving tools will appeal to the well organised carver who likes a place for everything and everything in its place. The very elegant wooden box is fi tted out with stowage slots for six of Kirschen’s familiar octagonal handled tools: a straight, a skew, three curved gouges and a Vee tool plus four chip carving knives and a double-sided sharpening stone, enough variety to satisfy most beginner carvers. This would make a very acceptable present for anyone thinking of getting into carving.

Kirschen Palm Carving Chisel Tool Set A handle designed as nature would have intended is how the manufacturer describes these tools and there is no doubt that the pear shaped handles fi t easily into the palm of the hand for comfortable and accurate carving. We are not so sure whether nature would have put the fl at on the side of the handle but Kirschen can be excused this little deviation in the interests of stopping the tools rolling around the bench. The 6 piece set consists of three straight tools, one Vee and two curved gouges, all made to their usual high standards of design and manufacture. Very useful for general carving or block making.

Fish Tail Chisel 3 Sweep

The traditional Sheffi eld list, on which most manufacturers base their production, lists 1/16” or 2mm as the narrowest tools available, leaving the true miniaturist forced to make do with whatever he, or she, can fi nd. Fortunately, Kirschen have come to the rescue with this range of tools which covers seven designs in sizes from 0.5 to 1.5mm. All are fi tted with 4” long octagonal hornbeam handles, with a recessed circular grip near the ferrule. The blades are fully polished and lacquered and of the same high quality steel as used on their full sized tools. Overall they give the distinct impression of having been designed by a carver, having bevels ground to the right length and angle requiring only a light hone before use. Firstly, a 108 x 63.5 x 16mm block with 5 shallow rounded grooves on one side for sharpening the bevels of a wide range of sweeps of carving tools, the reverse side and edges can obviously be used for fl at tools. Japanese Carver’s Stone

These hand-forged knives are excellent for carving, whittling and a variety of other crafts. The straight edge examples make superb marking or veneer cutting knives. Each blade is laminated using a mild steel backing forge-welded to high carbon Blue Steel, which forms the edge. Tempered to HRC 64-65 this steel takes a fantastic edge and holds it like no other. The handles are beech, shaped for comfort and control. The single bevel knives have one side slightly hollow, similar to the Japanese chisels making sharpening much easier. Each knife is supplied with a synthetic leather blade cover. Overall length is 200mm; blade length is 55 to 60mm.

Japanese Wood Carving Knives

Japanese Carver’s Files Rasps produce sawdust, fi les make fi lings (dust), an Iwasaki fi le produces miniature shavings. An Iwasaki fi le removes material very quickly the resulting surface is much smoother, requiring only a little sanding to fi nish. The secret lies in the shape of the teeth, milling and chemical etching produces a sharp edge with real bite. The half-round fi les have teeth only on the convex side. The tooth pitch of the fi ne fi le is 1.6mm and 1.2mm for the extra fi ne. All our Japanese Carver’s Files have beech wood handles fi tted. Made in Japan.

Detail Carving

Produced for honing and maintaining the edges on both the inside and outside of gouges and vee tools, the Flexcut SlipStrop consists of a complex moulding with two areas of leather and a bar of a specially developed honing compound. The compound is available separately for those wishing to use it on their existing strop. In use, the particular part of the moulding most suited to the chosen tool is rubbed crayon-like with compound and the tool stropped. A mirror fi nish is achieved quickly, and the resulting razor edge can be maintained by repeating the process many times before resharpening is required. Any good carver’s vice should be adjustable in all three dimensions. The Veritas vice has full rotation in two and up to 75mm(3”) of height adjustment in the third. An internal arrangement of a spring and an ‘O’ ring ensures that repositioning the workpiece is a smooth, controlled operation, with no violent swings or movements, allowing precise placement for the next angle of attack. Axminster Carver’s Vice This is a general purpose carving vice which offers a combination of ruggedness, versatility, ease of use and low cost. The body and base are made from cast iron and the mounting plate and other components are steel. Particular attention has been paid to the rigidity of the mounting plate and its stem which can be a source of fl exing on less well made vices. The 125mm diameter mounting plate has 16 holes for the mounting screws, arranged in 3 concentric circles. A heavy duty fl exible drive shaft unit for the serious carver, modeller or pattern maker, powered by a 300W input - 150W output, continuously rated motor. The speed is variable over a range of 0-20,000rpm and is controlled by means of a convenient foot pedal. The 970mm long fl exible shaft screws fi rmly onto the base of the motor and carries a plug-in bayonet on the other end for connection to any one of four optional handpieces or reciprocating carving head which are not supplied and need to be purchased separately.

A neat fl exible drive shaft and carving head which quickly and simply converts all Dremel and other Axminster supplied mini power tools into a powered carver. The mechanism in the head converts the rotation of the shaft into a reciprocating motion at a speed directly related to the speed of the tool. Using the Flexcut RG chisels, the carver is great for detail work and the decoration of turned or other types of work. The hand piece is 23.5mm in diameter and with the tool mounted above the workstation is exceptionally manoeuvrable without the restriction of a stiff or rigid fl exible shaft. Supplied complete with fi ve chisels. Length of shaft 1.07m.
