We finish the term off with the ANZAC dawn service to be held this Thursday. School finishes for students on Thursday afternoon at 3.00pm. Friday is a designated School Development Day and is specific to Kingston Primary. Term 2 Term 2 commences on Tuesday 29 th April for students. On Monday 28 th April all teaching staff from the 18 schools in the Bunbury Northern Network will be gathering at Australind Senior High School to workshop components of the Australian Curriculum to ensure that the public schools in this area have a common understanding. ANZAC Dawn Service The Kingston Primary Dawn Service has become a great tradition. We encourage all students and their parents to attend. Extended family and members of the community are very welcome. The service commences at 6.30am in the passive play area around the flagpoles in the school grounds. Those attending are asked to gather at 6.15am to ensure a prompt start. The service, which is run by the student executive and involves an art installation, will be followed by a free community breakfast for those who attend the service, coordinated by the P&C. Students must be in the care of their parents or parent designated supervisor to attend. The administration team will provide a duty of care from 8.00am. Entry to the service will be via the gates on either side of the administration building, or the Braidwood Drive car park. Students can wear service uniforms such as Joeys, Scouts, Cubs and Guides. I hope to see you all there. Swimming Lessons I spent some time negotiating with the Shire of Harvey and we have agreed that the pool entry fee will drop to $3.00 per day for swimming lessons. This will mean that the costs will be reduced to parents this year. Last year only 53% of students attended swimming lessons, providing significant supervision issues for the school as we had half of the students at the pool and half at school. I encourage all parents to send their child to swimming lessons and I have sent out a survey asking for parents to feed back their intentions for 2014 and the reasons behind their decisions. If we don’t increase the rate of attendance some important decisions will need to be made about the future of in-term lessons. Financial Support It is a strong belief of the administrative team that we will make significant allowances for parents who are having difficulty paying for school organised activities such as camps and excursions. We offer a confidential meeting where a payment plan is signed off by both parties. What I am not prepared to accept is people who make a commitment and make absolutely no effort to honour their commitment, prompting continual follow up and reminders. The school is not a profit making entity and we can not afford to suffer debts incurred by people who take advantage of the flexibility that we provide. To those people who have honoured their commitments, thank you. To those who have not, I expect you to. Leavers Shirts Year 6 and 7 students have taken home information about their leavers shirts. Orders including money are due back this Thursday so that they can be placed by the end of term and hopefully be available close to the beginning of the new term. These shirts then become part of the accepted school uniform.

I hope to see you all there. Swimming Lessons

I spent some time negotiating with the Shire of Harvey and we have agreed that the pool entry fee will drop to $3.00 per day for swimming lessons. This will mean that the costs will be reduced to parents this year. Last year only 53% of students attended swimming lessons, providing significant supervision issues

for the school as we had half of the students at the pool and half at school. Leavers Shirts

Year 6 and 7 students have taken home information about their leavers shirts. Orders including money are due back this Thursday so that they can be placed by the end of term and hopefully be available close to the beginning of the new term. These shirts then

become part of the accepted school uniform.

Year 5 Aussie Sports Last Friday the year 5 students walked to the grounds of LLC to join other schools in the area for a day of Aussie Sports. From all reports the day was great and the students had a great time. What is even more pleasing is the feedback that I have had from parents and even teachers from other schools which was very positive about the behaviour, initiative and sportsmanship of our students. Congratulations year 5’s, you represented the school so well.

Virtue of the Fortnight COURAGE Courage is personal bravery in the

face of fear. It is doing what needs to be

done even when it is really hard or scary.

Courage is going ahead even when you feel

like giving up. Courage is needed in trying

new things. It is admitting mistakes and

then doing the right thing. Courage is the

strength in your heart.

I have courage. I am willing to try new things. I admit mistakes and learn from them. I listen to my heart. I have the courage to do the right thing

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING SUCCESS! Last Tuesday, the 25th March, the students from Kingston participated in the annual L.I.S.A Swimming carnival. The event was held at the Harvey swimming pool, competing against Parkfield and Eaton PS. As always the Kingston Students cheered the loudest and displayed the 4 key virtues of courage, excellence, care and respect throughout the day. At the end of the carnival Kingston came away with the Handicapped shield for the 3rd year in a row and had several individual runner up champions. A big thank you to Miss Kremer and Mrs Cornelius for their help on the day.

GIVE A DAMN, GIVE A CAN 2014 We have started collecting donations for Rotary's Give a Damn, Give a Can in classrooms across the school. Last year Kingston donated more than 1500 items to local charity organisations and was recognised as the school with the highest number of donations across the Bunbury district. This year it would be great if we could match that total, or even beat it by collecting more items. Rotary will accept any non-perishable packaged food (cans, packets, boxes) as well as toiletries and baby products. Please help us to help others! Donna Vernon – Year 3 Teacher

SUSTAINABILITY CORNER

Litter Trolleys: The first project for the Sustainability Super Squad will be the implementation of a competition between two classes every week to see who can pick up the most litter. This might be hard with all students at Kingston Primary School showing the virtues of Care and Responsibility to place their own rubbish or rubbish they walk past in the bins every recess and lunch but there will always be some that we need to pick up. The winners receive 'BW' the Battery Recycling Ranger for the week. The first week was a close one and the winners were LA1 and LA2. NAIDOC Week Term 2: The staff sustainability team will begin organising NAIDOC activities for next term. If you are interested in helping out with resources or knowledge, please see Ross Millington, LA5, to see how we can work together to show respect for the indigenous cultures of Australia.
