A warm welcome

FROM THE HEADGREAT TRADITIONS, BRIGHT FUTURES.

We are proud of our history as a popular and successful boys’ school, and we make no apologies for our traditional ethos. We expect boys to work hard, have high standards of behaviour, and to display respect for others.

In addition to our focus on basic values, we are also a school that prepares boys for their futures. We recognise that our students will be leaving us to go into a highly competitive world, and so we aim to promote their all-round development, including leadership, problem solving and team work skills.

Choosing a secondary school for your son is a crucial decision. If you feel that our ethos and expectations are right for you and your son, then I do hope you will join us at KNBS.

High academic

STANDARDS

Our school ethos encourages boys to work hard and take school seriously. We are supported by parents who understand the importance of achieving good qualifications. Teachers work tirelessly to offer support to boys through their regular lessons, extra classes and revision sessions.

As a consequence of this strong partnership between students, parents and the school, we have a proven track record of excellent examination results. We have a high proportion of our students who move on from our Sixth Form to University.

OUR EXAM RESULTS MAKE US ONE OF THE HIGHEST ACHIEVING BOYS’ SCHOOLSIN BIRMINGHAM.

A safe and orderly

ENVIRONMENTOUR HOUSE SYSTEM OFFERS EXCELLENT PASTORAL CARE AND KEEPS OUR BOYS SAFE.For all parents their child’s safety and welfare are key factors in choosing a secondary school. Our insistence on good standards of behaviour and conduct sets the tone for learning in an atmosphere free of disruption. Visitors to the school tell us that they are surprised at how calm and quiet it is – you are welcome to visit us at any time and see for yourself.

We have well established systems to prevent bullying. As a school of over 700 boys we never say “It won’t happen”, but when it does, our dedicated team of house heads and student support workers will deal with it quickly and effectively.

Our curriculum aims to give individual students the opportunity to develop their full potential across all national curriculum subject areas.

Able students are provided with extra challenge by their teachers to stretch them, whilst those who experience difficulties are given additional support. We have an experienced and committed learning support team who provide targeted support to students, with particular emphasis given to English and Maths.

Years 7 - 9Students study the full range of national curriculum subjects, with a focus on English, Maths and Science. All students study a Modern Foreign Language; either French or Spanish. Within Design and Technology boys have the opportunity to develop their skills in a range of disciplines, including Food Technology.

Years 10 - 11Students continue to study the core curriculum subjects, but also follow a number of option subjects. Students and their parents are supported during the options process in Year 9 so as to make the right subject choices for them. Many of our students study subjects, such as Geography and History which contribute to the English Baccalaureate. Talented students are able to study single sciences.

PSHEOur Personal, Social and Health Education programme includes careers education and a variety of important issues relevant to students at different stages of their development. The promotion of British values such as democracy, justice and equality, is at the core of our PSHE and Assembly programmes.

Outstanding extra-curricular

OPPORTUNITIESPARTICIPATION IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AT KNBS.Outdoor Education has a long history at KNBS and is something that we are very proud of. Students have the opportunity to get involved in a diverse range of activities under the supervision of a full time, dedicated Outdoor Pursuits Instructor.

Our boys enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities, giving numerous opportunities for enjoyment, leadership, teamwork and competition. Students also have the opportunity to take part in a variety of trips both in the UK and overseas, which in recent years has included sailing around Greek islands, white-water rafting in Italy and mountain walking in the Lake District.

We have a number of highly successful sports teams, a strong tradition of music performance and a range of clubs to suit all interests. Our staff give freely of their time and are excellent role models.

SIXTH FORMOUR SIXTH FORM STUDENTS ARE FULLY SUPPORTED IN THEIR QUEST FOR ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL SUCCESS. We have a small and vibrant Sixth Form that the majority of our students in the main school choose to join. We offer mainly an academic curriculum with a small number of vocational courses. Students have a large number of A Level subjects to choose from; our curriculum offer is complemented by our successful partnership with Kings Norton Girls’ School.

Students participate in a range of enrichment opportunities and are encouraged to get fully involved in the life of the school; many of our sixth formers support younger students with their studies.

We have an enviable record of preparing students for University entrance and life after Sixth Form.

Our role in the community is very important to us. We encourage all our students to get involved in voluntary or charity work, whether it be during our regular fund-raising events in school or as part of our outreach work with local schools and care homes.

The Old Nortonians’ Association allows former students of the school to continue to be involved in life at KNBS. Former and current students have the opportunity to work together at our Remembrance Day service, ONA annual dinner and various open days and prize-giving events.

We also have a flourishing PTA who organise various fundraising events throughout the school year. Their involvement in school ensures a strong partnership between school and parents.
