Senior Badges and Prefect Induction

Proud parents, grandparents, friends and pastors gathered on Wednesday for the induction of our 2012 College Captains and Head Prefects. Also at this ceremony, all our Year 12 students received their ‘Senior’ badges and all were encouraged to be leaders and to show their leadership to the student body.

Alistair Davis and Evangeline Baker-Nuss are our College Captains and are very ably supported by Liezel Deysel, Aidan D’Souza and Thomas Otto as Head Prefects. These leaders and the prefect body along with Prefect Coordinator, Mr Brendon Schweitzer, have great vision for what they plan to achieve this year.

These young people accept a very serious role and agree to uphold the Prefect Pledge which reflects the standards King’s expects of them. We have included a copy of the Prefect Pledge (on page 5) so parents and students can see what is expected of our College leaders.

Little Gardening GurusNot much extra watering was needed when Noah’s Ark

children enthusiastically planted the first herbs and vegeta-bles for the year.

The Joeys were very keen on the digging, with Koalas and Possums taking care of the planting. We will excitedly watch our lettuce, rhubarb, cucumber and mint grow with lots of sunshine and just enough water hopefully. Did you know there are colourful “lollo nosso” lettuce growing in our garden?

Parenting with PowerScripture of the week: By wisdom

a house is built, and through under-standing it is established: through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

~ Proverbs 24:3,4

Raising a LeaderSome children are born leaders. They want to control

their parents, their siblings, their friends, and even people they don’t know. They have their own agenda and want everyone else to know what it is and how to fit into it. Leaders can be a real blessing in life but they sure are hard to raise.

One of the greatest gifts you can give to your budding leader is the ability to follow. To follow means listening to the needs and desires of others, submitting to someone else’s agenda, and learning how to work cooperatively on a team. All good leaders need to know how and when to follow.

Although you will nurture the leadership gifts your child possesses, it’s also your job to teach him or her how to work with others. The weaknesses of young leaders are demonstrated in negative ways like arguing, badgering, and being demanding or angry. Don’t just brush off these weaknesses as inevitable. Take time to correct, but do it in a way that appreciates the child’s gifts. “Karen, I can tell you’re going to be a leader someday, but remember that good leaders need to think about the needs of others.” Or, “Jim, I like the way you take initiative with your brother. Re-member, though, that a good leader is also a good listener.”

As you guide the development of your young leader you’ll not only make family life easier now, but also you’ll be equipping him for the future. Your hard work will be worth it in the end.

Strategy for the week: Leadership is influence. Our abil-ity to influence our children is tied into their respect for us. As we teach them to become leaders, we, as parents, have to be-come leaders worth following. Spend time listening to them, setting limits and teaching them Godly wisdom. It is a tough but wonderful job for which we need God’s wisdom to build them into leaders that are truly beautiful treasures in your home.

SecondaryChoices

As we commence the new school year, I set to wondering about the success of the year. We do not know what lies ahead, but we know that the success of a year and our happiness depends on the choices we make. This is a valuable lesson to impart to our children. I found this article by Steve Goodier -

A Choice To MakeI believe that, at least to some degree,

we can each exercise control over our out-look and attitudes. And the problem is - if we don’t control our attitudes, they will surely control us.

One farmer took charge of his outlook. He did it by filling his mind with awe and gratitude. He found that doing this gave him more energy to work on problems and to tackle those things that needed his attention. His neighbor’s outlook could not have been more different.

One summer morning he exclaimed, “Look at the beautiful sky. Did you ever see such a glorious sunrise?”

She countered. “It’ll probably get so hot the crops will scorch.” During an afternoon shower, he commented, “Isn’t this won-

derful? Mother Nature is giving the corn a drink today.” “And if it doesn’t stop before too long,” came the sour reply,

“we’ll wish we’d taken out flood insurance on the crops.” And so it went.

Convinced that he could instill some awe and wonder in this hardened woman, he bought a remarkable dog. Not just any mutt, but the most expensive, highly trained and gifted dog he could find. The animal was exquisite. It could perform remark-able and impossible feats that, the farmer thought, would surely amaze even his neighbor. So he invited her to watch his dog per-form.

“Fetch!” he commanded, as he tossed a stick into a lake, where it bobbed up and down in the rippling water. The dog bounded after the stick, walked ON the water, and retrieved it. “What do you think of that?” he smirked.

Her brow wrinkled. “Hmmm. Can’t swim, can he?” Not to sound too Pollyanna, but I agree with newscaster Paul

Harvey when he said that he has never seen a monument erected for a pessimist. A stubbornly positive attitude can often make the difference between happiness and misery, between health and illness and even between life and death.

Viktor Frankl would have agreed. Dr. Frankl chronicled his ex-periences as a Holocaust and concentration camp survivor in his book MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING. In it he asserts something really quite remarkable. He says that everything can be taken from a person except one thing. What can never be taken away is the power to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circum-stances.

We can decide to choose our attitudes every day. That may be one of the most important decisions we will make. I don’t want to neglect making that choice. ~ Steve Goodier ~

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

GeneralGod will supply!Quote from Power New Testament

Some days I wish Philippians 4:19 read “my God will take care of all your wants!” But it says “needs”. Sometimes what I want is not the thing I most need. Some people will always be richer than you are, some people will always be more skillful than you and some less. But God is rich, it is all his! And out of his wisdom, he will take good care of you. “I pray that God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus!” Philippians 4:19

Medication SafetyParents are reminded that students are not to carry medica-

tion on their person, including paracetamol. It is easy to think that students are responsible enough to carry

and administer their own medication, however, it is equally easy to overmedicate with dramatic effects.

We have a large campus which enjoys the integration of stu-dents of all ages, from age four to young adults. Medication can be easily dropped or misplaced and one of our younger students may find it and inadvertently consume it.

As staff and parents, we have a responsibility to look after each and every student on our campus. I ask parents to assist us by ensuring all medication is handed in to the college clinic for our staff to administer and ensure its safe storage.

NB: Medication must be accompanied by parental consent and have a pharmacy label attached. Medication authority available on website or from clinic.

Thank you for your assistance in these matters. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

begin officially next Friday 10th February after the swimming carnival. Teams should be finalized by late February. These winter trials will continue on Fridays throughout the term.

The APS competition is highly competitive and requires a full commitment from all parties involved. Students will be given the op-portunity to select from the following sports:

Rugby (boys only) - played in year levels

Netball (girls only), teams in years 8A & 8B, 9A & 9B, Intermediate A & B, Open A, B, C, D,

Soccer & volleyball are offered for both boys and girls in year levels.Hockey & tennis are available for both boys and girls in junior & senior teamTo participate in these trials the College Sports uniform will be sufficient. By Week 4 students will be notified of the teams they have

been selected for and the equipment required for that sport. Students should come prepared to trial each Friday.

Primary School SportCarnivals, carnivals, carnivals!!! This is an exciting time of the year for all swimmers. We request parents to carefully read all notes being

Outstanding Achievements

AquathlonThree of our sporting stars in Year 7, Megan Bogatie, Jonathan Robertson and Elijah Winnington have all qualified for the South

Coast Sport Yrs 11-12 Aquathlon team. They will now race in the championships to be held at Redcliffe held in February. These guys train very hard and their success is a pleasing reward. Congratulations and we wish you all the best.

TriathlonWe congratulate Dimitee Coventry who participated in Race 4 of the Gatorade triathlon series held at Robina in the holidays.

This was a qualifying event to make the South Coast team in which Dimitee easily made, even with her not being 100% fit. We wish Dimitee all the best in her training and competitions. Definitely a star to keep an eye on.

RowingAt the end of last year we had our rowing champion, Emily Carey, compete in the Open Queensland State Rowing Champion-

ships at Bundaberg. She competed in the under 18 single, under 18 double, under 18 quad and under 18 four. She also competed in the under 20 quad. Emily won two gold (two State titles) and one bronze medal. Emily has two major events coming up includ-ing the NSW State Championships at Penrith this month and National Championships in the first week of March in Perth. Outstand-ing results Emily. We wish you every success over the next few months.
