TWICE AS GOOD
Twice as many people
entered the society’s
125th annual show, held
on August 9th, as they
did last year’s, producing
a bumper spectacle.
Extra tables had to be set
out in South Wootton
Village Hall to accommo-
date the 280 entries—up
from 139 in 2013.
There was a
“magnificent” display
from the 28 entrants,
commented Chairman,
Eddie Barber.
People who set up the
Society in 1889 would be
proud to think that their
hard work was still being
continued 125 years later,
commented the Presi-
dent, Paul Brandon, be-
fore going on to present
the prizes. He added that,
if people enjoyed the
show, he hoped they
would join the Society.
The 117 classes covered
pot plants and flowers,
vegetables, fruit, a variety
of arts and crafts and pre-
serves. An extra class
added to the baking sec-
tion for the 125th year
invited participants to
prepare a celebratory
cake. This received three

SPECIAL BOOK TO MARK 125 YEARS
The booklet’s author Kelvin Fairweather explains.
“We were fortunate to be handed, by former
chairman John Doubleday, minutes of committee
meetings going back to 1889: the formation of the
society thus giving the opportunity of detailing its
history.
These books covering the years 1889 – 1894, 1898
– 1900, 1919 – 1923, 1934 – 1950 plus photo-
graphic records, formed the basis of the booklet
‘History of King’s Lynn Horticultural Society’”.
The book can be obtained from members of the
committee or Kelvin Fairweather (01553 673772
or klhs.co.uk) for £1.00.

COMMEMORATIVE GARDEN IN THE WALKS
To help celebrate the Society’s 125th birthday,
the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough
Council planted a special garden in the Walks,
The colourful green and red display was put
together in the St James Park, opposite the
swimming pool, in June.
The Society would like to thank the Council for
providing the plants and planting the display.
entries and was won by Mrs
Rita Crown.
The junior section—for young
people up to 16—was well
supported with entries in-
cluding mini gardens in trays,
animals made from fruit and
vegetables, artwork, jam tarts
and pot plants.
A class for bedding plants in an unusual container boasted an entry created in a
spare toilet by residents and staff at Amberley Hall Care Home and one bursting
from the mouth of a model crocodile.
Also set out in the hall was a table displaying memorabilia from the Society’s first
125 years. Items included silver cups loaned by Mrs Anne Greeves. The trophies
had been won by her grandfather, Mr Frederick Stanger, between 1936 and 1948.
Visitors could also look at old photographs and
some minute books dating from 1889, which had
been discovered in his home by previous member,
Mr John Doubleday.
The show attracted a good number of visitors.

The Society, again led by Rachel Vyse, entered a gar-
den at the Sandringham Show, This summer’s theme
was a coastal garden and the Society earned a bronze medal.
