The Chinese New Year

The Year of the Snake which falls on the 10th February is one of the 12 zodiac signs associated with the Chinese Zodiac, where 12 animals represent a rotating 12 year cycle. Many Chinese believe their fate and character is tied to the zodiac symbols in the year in which they were born.

Easter

The average Irish person will eat 2.13 eggs over the Easter period. Furthermore, over Easter we consume enough wine to fill 204,000 baths (6.5 million litres) and enough beer to fill over six Olympic-sized swimming pools. (Source: Repak)

April Fool’s Day

The stories surrounding the origin of April Fool’s Day vary widely. The most popular tale dates from 1564 when France changed its calendar to the modern Gregorian calendar, moving New Year’s Day from 1st April to the 1st January. Those who continued to celebrate New Years on April 1st were treated as fools and ridiculed.

Cannes Film Festival

The International Film Festival was created on the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, who was keen to establish an international cultural event in France to rival the Venice Film Festival. The first Cannes festival was set to be held in Cannes in 1939, however, it was not until over a year after the war ended that it finally took place, on 20 September 1946.

Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs when the sun is at its furthest point from the equator – it reaches its northernmost point and the Earth’s North Pole tilts directly towards the sun, at about 23.5 degrees.

Halloween

Halloween is thought to have originated from Ireland and is linked to the Celtic festival of ‘Samhain’. It was thought that on ‘Samhain’ the veil between this world and the next was at its weakest and the spirits of dead ancestors could pass through. Bonfires were lit to help guide the friendly spirits and costumes were worn to avoid kidnapping by the evil spirits.
