As we look back to the history of America we can see that there were a group of passionate people called the ‘pilgrims’ who were determined to cross over a bridge of water to live freely. For what purpose? These people were determined to worship God freely, go after His way of doing things, and most importantly what was their drive? That was to have the word of God, the Bible freely for all to read!

These had a passion to move on and a courage to move forward to embrace God’s word. When the ship Speedwell

began to leak, they turned around and all piled into the Mayflower and set sail. When the storms came and pressed them off course, they still moved forward and found Plymouth Rock.

We can learn from their courage and wit-ness their strength. As the winter took many of the lives of those, others lived on and kept believing that God’s word was for them and a new nation was His pur-pose and design. America was birthed.America, America, God shed His grace on thee, a land and a home of the brave and the free, from sea to shining sea.*

We can see as we study the history of those pilgrims who went before us a peo-ple of faith, a people of direction, and a people of obedience. They set sail to em-brace the word of God in their hearts and follow His direction. They through the Mayflower Compact stated their determi-nation to uphold God’s glory, their faith, and their freedom with courage. They de-termined that God’s way of doing things and His word was life, liberty, and worthy of their pursuit for happiness.

The Pilgrims that sailed to America are a witness of, 1 Chronicles 22:18, 19, 13 as it says,

“Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God...Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the stat-utes and judgments which the LORD charged... be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed...”

How are we teaching our children to measure success? The word of God shows us some basic principles for us to obtain success. Ones we can pass onto our children.

Be strong in God’s word and ways.

This means to become strong, firm and resolute. To prevail and be secure in Him. To press and grow stout and make bold in God’s ways and word. To be encouraged, pre-vail, and display strength. To support, repair, retain, con-tain, and withstand, to hold strongly with God’s word and ways.We must teach our children success lies in being strong and resolute in God.

Be courageous with God’s word and ways.

This means to be alert, brave, and solid as we are strong and bold. To make ourselves ob-stinate and assured in God’s word and promise. To be de-termined to stand that God’s word and ways are proven su-perior, and that they exhibit

strength and are confirmed not only throughout the ages but in our lives. To live as-sured His word and ways are true.

We must teach our children to be utterly convinced in the truth of God’s word no matter what they see or feel. In that, they can stand bravely and resolute in the Truth of God.

Obey all the word.

This means to observe and keep God’s word and His way of doing things. To give heed to and to guard yourself to have charge of His word. In this we keep watch, wait for, retain, treasure up, protect, and restrain and reserve His word. As we celebrate and perform His word we keep ourselves and take heed of His word. This guards and saves life through the care of ‘follow-ing’ His way of doing things. Obedience does refrain but more than that obedience fol-lows Him.

We must teach our children that obedience is more than an action because someone has said, “No you can’t”, but

that it is heeding and treasur-ing up the truth of God’s word and following it because His word brings life and is life to us! Teach our children to “heed Him and observe His word and follow His way of doing everything”!

Do not turn to the right or left.

The key here is the word ‘turn’. The Lord means that we are not to turn aside or de-part from His direction. It is a must that we stay focused and not ‘avoid’, turn aside from, depart from, leave undone, abolish, to be removed or al-low ourselves to come to an end of following His word and His ways. We are not to reject, or leave undone His di-rection, design, and purpose that He has laid out for us and in His word. His ways must be our ways. His thoughts must be our thoughts.

We must teach our children to not allow any pressure or de-mand to turn us to the left or to the right of what His word says, His direction gives, or His plan for our families are. In this security we find His

strength upholding us and embracing our lives.

“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn

from it to the right or to the left, that you may be success-ful wherever you go.” Joshua 1:6-7 (NIV)

It is important for us as par-ents to bring the definition of success to our children. Suc-cess only comes through heeding the Lord’s direction and word. There is no other

philosophy that can measure success. There is no other work that can bring it but fol-lowing God’s plan for our lives. Success comes through knowing Him and following His lead. The measurement of success is how far you al-low your lives, your family, and your children to be lead in God’s way of doing things.

Sidney wiggled out from underneath the barrel on the deck of the Mayflower. He had decided to sail across the seas with the Pilgrams and wanted a better view of things. He crawled to the top of the barrel but still couldn’t see things as well as ex-pected.

He soon discovered on the top of his barrel was a telescope. So, Sidney decided the best thing to do was to crawl to the top of a telescope and peek through. He was so excited as he saw across the wa-ter and dis-covered the land the Pil-grims were traveling to was America.

Sidney climbed to the top of the Mayflower’s mast. He jumped through the sails and de-cided he was going to be the official Mayflower look out. His fuzzy hair blew in the wind as they sailed high

over the waves.

”This was going to be an exciting day,” thought Sidney. It was the day that the Pilgrims would dis-cover America and Sidney was on the very top of the Mayflower ready to be a part of it.

Suddenly, Sidney threw up his legs and shouted, “Wait a minute!” The Pilgrims came to America in the year 1620, and he wants to know when your

birthday is? “Oops”, Sid-ney mumbled as he felt the ship come to a stop while buckling against a wave. He heard a chain creek and looked down from the mast to a sailor drop anchor.

“Land Ho!” Sidney ex-claimed with excitement. “Since you're birthday was after the Pil-grims landed, I will tell you all about our trip”, said Sidney.

He scooted down the sail as soon as he saw Ply-mouth Rock and jumped into the boat the pilgrims used to get them there.

After many months in America, Sidney was settled in. He made his home in one of the cabins and set himself in a bag of flour to tell his story.

“Plymouth, Massachusetts is where the Pilgrims landed. They were so thankful to arrive”, said Sid-ney proudly, “the very first thing they did after stepping out on Plymouth Rock was to pray”.

When we landed, we all decided to sign the “May-flower Compact”. It says, “In the Name of God, Amen”, that we “for the glory of God” and for the “advancement of the Christian Faith will begin our new country.”

Sidney the caterpillar was very proud of his Chris-tian faith. The Pilgrims left a country called Eng-land because they wanted to worship God freely and wanted to live in a land all their own. I wanted to come with the Pilgrims so I made my way into a bag of flour. We all brought our Bibles to read and wanted to come to America because the church in England refused to let us have our very own Bi-bles.

First we went to a country called Holland and planned our trip on a ship called the Speedwell. We left for Southhampton, England but soon after the Speedwell had a leak, so we came all the way across the sea on the cargo ship called the May-flower.

There were 102 Pilgrims on the ship and another 30 people were sailors. Everybody ate biscuits. Oh, there were so many yummy biscuits. Do you know if everybody ate 3 biscuits a day, that meant we had more than 25,000 biscuits on the Mayflower? Even though we didn’t have all those biscuits in the galley, I always found a place to sleep in them.

It took 66 days for us to get to America. The Pil-grims and I were heading for the Hudson River and missed it because of all the wind and weather. We went through many storms and cross winds. I almost blew off the ship when one of the main beams bowed and cracked but God protected me. We took a large iron screw and raised the beam and fixed it.

We were blown off course towards Cape Cod and never made it to New York. We landed in Ply-mouth and later built a town called Plimouth Plan-tation. All our houses were made out of timber, hay, rocks, wood and mud. We had thatched roofs and we built a fort and a church.

The American Indians helped us grow corn, and taught us how to live in America. They even helped us harvest all our crops and we reaped a bountiful harvest. Edward Winslow said, “God be praised, we had a good increase of corn; by the goodness of God, we are far from want”.

This was our first Thanksgiving. We had a three day feast with our 90 Indian friends. Look at this table! We had turkey, corn bread, berries, and more! Yummy, Yummy! We had so much food, and we even had popcorn for dinner. We played games, had races, and prayer.

The Pilgrims and I thanked God for all the great things He did for us and for our new country, America.

Later, Thomas Jefferson said that we should make a day of public Thanksgiving to Almighty God and ask Him to pour out His Spirit on everyone and to establish these United States upon the basis of re-ligion and virtue.

We can all be thankful for our country and cele-brate God’s blessing in America! Sidney’s desire is for you to celebrate God’s word this Thanksgiving and be thankful for the pilgrims who were strong and courageous enough to follow God’s plan for America. -KW

"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way pros-perous, and then thou shalt have good success." Joshua 1:8

So often we measure success by our own understanding. Even the dictionary measures it by standards as we see in its definition that success means;

1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.

2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

3. A successful performance or achievement: The play was a success.

4. A person or thing that is successful:

To determine our success ac-cording to this definition would be that we need to measure it by finding that we have a fa-vorabale or prosperous ‘end’ that attains wealth, position, honor and is ‘successful’ in its achievement and performance.

If we were measuring the suc-cess of our children this defini-tion could be very rigid. What performance and achievement? What position, honor, and at-tained wealth should we be looking for being successful in their lives? As parents and as Christians to we view ourselves as successful?

According to Joshua 1:8, the word of God tells us that suc-cess is to not let the word of God depart from our mouths.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth;” It also says that we should; “meditate therein day and night, that thou

mayest observe to do accord-ing to all that is written therein:” Meditating on God’s word is what causes you to observe and do accordingly. But interestingly, what does it mean to not have the ‘law depart out of thy mouth’?

The word for law here is ‘tora’. This means God’s divine instruc-tion his prophetic teaching and His word. His word is filled with His way of doing things, that is what the ‘kingdom of God’ means. God’s way of doing things is described and upheld by His word.

Secondly, the word mouth here is the word, ‘peh’. This word in Hebrew means, your speech, and your well or river. It is Jesus in John 7:38, who said that out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water. The word for belly is ‘koilea’ which is defined as the area of nourishment and pleasure but also it means, the innermost part of a man, his heart (desire), soul, his seat of thought, feeling, and choice. As we meditate on the word of God we will find our innermost being changed and defined by the nourishment of God. After-all, Jesus did say He was the bread of life!

The key here is to meditate. The Lord is telling us that we are to meditate on the word day and night! We are to ‘ha-gah’ on the word. This Hebrew word makes it very clear that we are to;

Roar, speak, mutter, muse, de-vise, plot, growl, groan, imag-ine, and utter the word of God day and night! We are not only to learn God’s word, but

to live by His word, and to speak His word. He wants us to teach His word to our children, He wants us to speak His words and His ways.

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (KJV)

As Christians we need to real-ize that our success is defined by not allowing the word of God to depart from our mouths and the entrance of our lives. God’s way of doing things is not to depart from our doings.

In Psalm 1:1-3 we read; “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his sea-son; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he do-eth shall prosper.”

Prosperity and success is de-fined to come to us as we plant ourselves in God’s word and His way of doing things, meaning, His kingdom.. Mat-thew 6:33 tells us to “Seek ye first the kingdom of God... and then all these things shall be added unto you”.

The Hebrew word, “sakal” is the word found in Joshua 1:8. This is the word, for success found in; “and then thou shalt have good success.” This is the word means that success is de-

fined for us that we shall have; wise understanding, insight, to give attention too, consider, ponder, have comprehension, teaching, that we may be pru-dent, circumspectly, to cause to consider, cause to prosper, and and prosper in all that we do. This word is put with the word that our will be made prosperous, or as the word means, to be made to; advance and make progress and to be profitable, causing to prosper and to show or esperience prosperity.

In Psalm 30:6, it says, “And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved”.

It also says in Psalm 118:24-26, “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I be-seech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosper-ity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.”

So, how can we ‘begin’ to see and define prosperity? Here’s a few things to consider:

Gen 24:21, shows it will be the Lord who makes our journey prosperous.

Gen 24:40, shows that our family and being led in all our ways by Him, is part of the Lord granting prosperity.

Gen 24:42, shows that provision from the Lord, (water, wells, things, direction, etc.) makes our way prosperous.

Gen 24:56, shows that God keeps us from being hindered on our way which is part of His pros-perity for us.

Gen 39:2, shows that the Lord is with us, which is what makes us and our way prosperous.

Gen 39:3, shows that others see the Lord with us, and they see that the Lord makes ‘all that is in our hand’ to prosper for His glory.Gen 39:23, shows that protection by the Lord is part of our pros-perity.

Also, throughout 1 Samuel and 1 Kings we see this word define prosperity as ‘the Spirit from God ‘coming’ upon’ making our way prosperous. We also read in 1 Chronicles 22:11, “Now my son, the Lord be with thee, and pros-per thou, and build the house of the Lord thy God, as He hath said of thee.”

Here we find a key. It is important to note that the word of God tells us that the Lord is with us to prosper us for His purpose, to build what He has called and purposed us to build. This would

be the ‘house’ for our families, our work places, our ministries. He tells us, “For thus saith the LORD... I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you... For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end... ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.” Jeremiah 29:10-12 (KJV)

Success and prosperity can be simply defined as you plug into His word and His plan for you and your family. You will find that it is not only a definition but it is the fruit of His word in you. Seek Him first, and you will find success and your way will be made pros-perous. Everything will be added unto you! -KW

What does the word "deny" mean to you?. Deny to me means to not accept something you know as truth, to, in a way, deny or "disown" the truth as you know it. It says in 2 Timothy 2:12,

"If we deny Him, He will also deny us."

If we say "God is not good or that He does something bad to us to teach us", we are literally denying and not accepting what Jesus did for us. He has made it clear in His word that because of His love for us, that He has come to bless us, heal us, and favor us in all things.

If you can't believe in His work through salvation and in this His love for us, how can you believe He died for you? When Peter DENIED Jesus, he dis-owned Jesus. By not walking in a prosperous life, not accepting God as good, or that He wants you healed, you are denying what Jesus has done for you. You’re denying His LOVE.

So, if you have denied Him like Peter did, let the work of His salvation, the work of His love, restore you in "all" things. Believe in the work of the cross and resurrection of the Son of God! He loves you...
