Kenyan Music and DanceTraditionally, Kenyan music originates from several sources.

Many of the Nomadic tribes of this region share some common ground in the use of songs and chants, particularly among Maa speaking groups.

Maa song has always played a large role in ceremonial life, and continues to. One of the best known Maasai ceremonial songs is the Engilakinoto, sung after a victorious lion hunt. Structured around a deep rhythmic chant it is accompanied by a spectacular dance in which warriors display their strength and prowess by leaping directly and vertically into the air.

Elsewhere, the use of drums became widespread and central to elaborate traditional dances. The word Ngoma (drum) is still used to describe most forms of traditional music and dance.

A variety of drums were used throughout the country. The Luhya of Western Kenya developed a very distinctive dance style called Sikuti after the local name for a drum. This extremely energetic dance is usually performed by paired male and female dancers, and accompanied by several drums, bells, long horns and whistles.

The Kamba and Chuka people both developed a distinctive drumming style, in which a long drum is leant forward and clasped between the thighs. The Kamba were well known for their athletic, almost acrobatic dancing.

Other instruments were developed, including reed flutes and basic stringed instruments. One of the finer of these was the Nyatiti, similar to the medieval lyre. The Nyatiti is commonly played throughout Kenya’s West. It has a gentle, relaxing sound, and is usually played solo with a single singer, and sometimes accompanied by light percussion or bells.

Day 1 and 2

This safari combines two of the most interesting and contrasting Game Parks in Kenya. It provides an even balance between traveling by car and some real out door walking in the African bush. From the Northern frontier (Samburu), which is famous, for it’s rare species such as the Reticulated Giraffes, Gravy’s Zebra, the long necked Gerenuk and Lance Oryx. You drive into the Great Rift Valley where you will experience the thrill at a real foot safari. You have the opportunity to hike up the Vulture -inhabited cliffs of Hell’s Gate National Park. The last four days are spent walking and game viewing through a wild life kingdom unsurpassed anywhere else in Africa. We mingle with the Nomads and wander among huge herds of plain game – a thrilling experience especially during the period of the wildebeest migration up from the Serengeti between July and October. We return to Nairobi for your final departure or Coastal extension.

Day2:TO THE CHIMPANZEES SANCTUARY

Depart Nairobi and Travel north after brakfast, where you drive past pineapple coffee, bananas plantation to one of the largest open air markets in East and Central Africa Karatina. A brief stop to sample what is sold and tom meet the local inhabitants who belong to the biggest tribe in Kenya- the Kikuyu. Proceed to the sweet water game reserve/ranch and chimp sanctuary, which is on your way to Mt. Kenya, in time for lunch. Game viewing and visiting the chimps in the one -square Kilometer sanctuary.

This sanctuary is home to more than 26 orphaned chimps age varying from 2 -25 years most of which came from Jane Goodall Institute in Burundi return to Nairobi in the late evening(late inclusion is baby Zee, rescuer from a pet shop in United Arab Emirates),

DAY3:Nairobi/Nakuru

Day4:Maasai Mara

0830 hrs Depart from our Nakuru lodge/ hotel for a journey south along the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Lunch at Narok and then climb the western wall entering Hemingways country.serengeti plains Arrive in late afternoon in the Maasai Mara Game reserve. Set up a camp or lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Maasai Mara

A full day spent game viewing across (from 0800 – 1830 hrs) the rich, tree studded grassland and rolling hills the famous Mara is renowned for its great herds of plain’s game, black manned lion, leopard and cheetah. I also has numerous elephants and virtually every type of wildlife to be found in Kenya. All meals and overnight at campsite/ lodge.

Day 6: Maasai Mara / Nairobi

Pre- breakfast game drive from 0630-0930 hrs, back to the camp/ lodge for late breakfast. Leave Maasai Mara, Lunch en route arrive in Nairobi later afternoon back to your Hotel room. Dinner and overnight at you hotel.

Day7:Bomas of Kenya

After an early breakfast, you’ll leave for Bomas of Kenya to visit the Cultural activities taking place, different ethnics  tribal groups performs here daily to promote our diversify culture.  Various cultural groups including the Kikuyu,Luo,Luhya and many more communities which will entertain you with music, dancing and story telling.

Very early morning leave Nairobi and drive south past Kapiti Plains arriving in time for lunch at your camp/lodge. Explore the Tsavo West Park in the afternoon. Return to the camp/lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Tsavo West

Leave after breakfast and have a game viewing drive; a visit to the Mzima Springs which are not far from the lodges or camps, the pool is rich with hippos, crocodile and bird life. There is an underwater viewing chamber to give you a view of sub-marine activities. Return to the camp/lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 Tsavo West

After breakfast visit the Shetani Lava Flows and the Chyulu caves (the caves are just outside the Chyulu gate). Continue to Chaimu Crater South of Kilanguni lodge, this can also be trekked if time allow us.Dinner and overnight at the Lodge/Camp.

Day 11 Tsavo West / Nairobi/Mombasa

After breakfast visit the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary at the base of Ngulia Hills,you have a good chance of seeing the black rhino (we have about 30), You will stop to visit a local farmer and have a tour of his farm then take a picnic lunch at the hotel.

Safari itinerary:8 DAYS,7NIGHTS OBAMA PACKAGE

DAY 1 – NAIROBI TO NAIVASHA

Depart Nairobi in the early morning towards Lake Naivasha.

Arrive Fish Eagle campsite/Lodge. Proceed on a boat ride to Crescent Island, 15 minutes. This is a private game sanctuary where you can wander on foot among herds of zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, vervet monkeys, hares, genet cats, waterbuck and giraffe. It is also a great place for birdwatching, with over 300 species of birds on display.

After lunch, the options include visiting Elsamere Conservation center, relaxing by the poolside or partaking in sport fishing on the lake (all at additional extra costs). The Elsamere center is a conservation center focused on environmental awareness programmes as well as a memorial museum for the late Joy Adamson of Born Free fame. Dinner and overnight camping/Lodge back at Fish eagle/Lodge.

DAY 2 – NAIVASHA TO NAKURU

Early morning breakfast before breaking camp/Lodge towards nearby Lake Nakuru for a game drive. The park is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced to the park some years ago and you may find white rhino at the southern end. The park has also retained its reputation amongst bird enthusiasts with more than 400 species of bird found here. We spend the night at a campsite/Lodge just outside of town.

DAY 3 – NAKURU TO KAKAMEGA

Early breakfast before breaking camp and departing towards the shores of Lake Victoria.

Lunch en route before arriving at Kakamega forest. Here we enjoy a guided walk through the only mid-altitude rainforest in Kenya (a remnant of Central Africa rainforests).

This national park is home to over 300 bird species, over 350 tree species, 27 species of “friendly” snakes and 400 butterfly species. Further attractions include the endangered DeBrazza monkey, the majestic blue and white colobus monkey, flying squirrels and potto (the world’s slowest mammal) making it a great place to explore. Dinner and overnight camping/Lodge in the reserve.

DAY 4 – KOGELO/ KISUMU

In the morning after breakfast, drive towards Kericho, famous for its tea plantations arriving in the afternoon time for lunch,in the afternoon We can have the local excursions and learn more about culture and life of the tribes in Kericho town.Dinner and overnight at the campsite / lodge in Kericho.After morning Breakfast,  depart towards Narok and the Masai mara game reserve. Arrive in the afternoon with lunch en-route at our semi-permanent Talek riverside campsite/Lodge situated at the edge of the park. Here we have stand-up tents/Lodge with beds for use as well as small wood cabins for those after a touch more comfort. Hot showers are available in the camp/Lodge and meals are served in the dinning mess or in the open.

DAY 7 – MASAI MARA

Full day spent exploring the Mara game reserve through early morning and late afternoon game drives. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of

wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common.

Day 8 – Nairobi

We break camp and drive to Narok where Masai souvenirs can be bought, then back to your Nairobi Hotel by late afternoon.

MASAI CULTURE

One of Kenya best known tribes, the Masai believe that God gave them exclusive rights over all cattle in the world. They were a warring tribe and may have dominated Kenya at one time, had there not been three catastophes that brought them under British rule. In the 1880s there was a Rindepest outbreak that dwindled their herds. This was followed by an outbreak of smallpox and finally, their great leader Mbatyany, died and they could not decide on a new leader. This led to a great deal of fighting amongst themselves durring which time the British were able to gain control of the land. The Masai people do not hunt wildlife but they can be lethal killers of Lions, as a tribal custom as well as to protect their livestock.

SAMBURU CULTURE

The Samburu are part of the Masai group and have common customs and language (Maa). They range from Laikipa to Mt Nyiro and these graceful people are charming, beautiful and witty. Their lifestyle is very similair to that of the Laikipia Masai living in a mud and wattle style houses with the livestock enclosure in the middle of the boma. Steeped in tradition, the Samburu mark each stage of life with a ceremony and like the Masai, these ceremonies observe large age groupings

TURKANA CULTURE

The Turkana are also a Nilo-Hamitic people and like the Pokot migrated from Eastern Uganda. The Turkana occupy land in the northern section of Kenya. They take great pride in their elaborate Ostrich headresses and are generally thought of as a very tough

people, surviving off a harsh, dry land. The Turkana keep camels, goats, cattle and sheep and supplement their diet with Nile Perch that they net and spear from the shallows of Lake Turkana.

RENDILLE CULTURE

The Rendile are a handsome people ranging from Lake Turkana to Marsabit and are always on the move with their camels and livestock. The Rendille are Mohammedan and they are the only tribe in East Africa whose women wear a coxcomb hairstyle. They live chiefly on camel milk, blood and occasionally meat and for water they often must travel great distances. A long time ago the men were circumcised between twenty to twenty five years, but now the age is between fifteen and twenty and each young man has to present the circumiser with a goat.

POKOT CULTURE

The Pokot are a Nilo-Hamitic peoples who migrated from the Nile Valley of Sudan about 200 years ago. They occupy north-eastern Kenya, stretching from Lake Baringo to Lake Turkana. They are nomadic people and live of the land in this remarkably dry area. Some Pokot are sedentary while others keep livestock. Some Pokot farm on the steppes of the Rift Valley while others herd livestock in semi arid lands.. They are very decorative people, often wearing plumes of ostrich feathers in a mud and wattle cap that is moulded on the back of their head.
