Spring has officially sprung! And as always, we’re in for a treat. The
international runways gave us everything we needed and more – bright colors,
fun textures, new ways of thinking, but most importantly, a new lease on style
and fashion. Womenswear has never been so exciting, from new and emerging
designers to the older houses, and menswear is finally opening its once closed,
dapper doors to experimentation and edginess. Embrace the color, shun the
coats, and get ready for a hot, hot, hot spring/summer 2013!
After all, it’s more than fashion….
SS13TREND REPORT
NOIR ET BLANCThe fashion crowd is known for clacking around in an all black outfit.
It wasn’t until Spring 2013 that people starting mixing noir et blanc.
Whether it’s a downtown look a la Alexander Wang, something more casual
from Elizabeth and James or a gown by Bibhu Mohapatra – black and
white are coming together better than ever before. Embrace the two and
welcome them into your closet this season.

A PATCHWORK ORANGEPrint, textures, skins and color are clashing together this season, for an effect
worthy of a homemade quilt. The Proenza Schouler boys played heavily with this
trend, leading the pack in a season full of minimalism and block colors. Princes of
prints Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos took their patchworks to another level,
whilst Mary Katrantzou went subtle with hers. Phillip Lim took prints and cut-up
techniques and blended them together, whilst London newcomer Eudon Choi went
for textures. Needless to say, maybe even grandma’s old quilt might be a sartorial
success this season.

THE SHEER APPEALThere’s something about the spring time that makes life feel a bit lighter, flowier,
and easy like a cool breeze. With a strong does of sheer clothing and accents,
many designers took these feelings to heart. While some looks scream sex appeal
for the girl looking to wow the crowds, other looks just give a playful hint to the
sheer look, such as Erdem or Elie Saab. The great thing about this trend, is
that there is a look for everyone, no matter your style – take a look at Givenchy’s
demure sophisticate, Dion Lee’s feminine playfulness, or Saint Laurent’s
bohemian casual. So make things light for yourself this spring and add a bit of
sheer to your look - you’re sure to get some attention no matter where you go.

FANCIFUL FRILLSThe peplum has spread around the body – from stiffer forms to airy waves,
there’s no avoiding the flounce. There’s one for everyone, from out-there to
subtle, you can’t help but be drawn in. Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy let them
flow freely, whilst at Nicolas Ghesquiere’s last collection for Balenciaga,
they were stiffer but sexier. The Peter Pilotto men went for the peplum
and flared sleeves, whilst JW Anderson went for neoprene, and Christopher
Kane went for tight, embellished frills. For a more sophisticated flounce,
head to Gucci, but if all else fails, go for Isabel Marant’s wearable peplums
– either way, the flounce will give you a bounce (in your step, that is)!

METALLIC TOUCHAs far as the future comes, this is where it’s time to shine, almost literally!
Metallics and shimmers are not just solely for silver and gold, now, and they’re
coming in all shapes and shades, from bright to quiet, from all over to subtle.
The pioneer for this trend was Burberry Prorsum’s Christopher Bailey, who was
sure to send his girls down the runway head to toe metallic. From the full on
shines of Prorsum, Christian Dior and Jonathan Saunders, to the subtle styling
of J.W. Anderson and Topshop Unique, to the demure sheens of Céline and Mary
Katrantzou, there is a way for every woman to have a little shine in their life this
season - just don’t stand directly in the sun!

AN EASTERN PROMISEThe modern woman will undoubtedly recognize high fashion’s recent take
on Asian-inspired clothing. To successfully pull off this fast growing trend,
a woman has to be willing to take on bold colors and a silhouette that’s
not as fitted as some we’ve seen in the past, such as Prada, Miu Miu and
Hermès. The bold prints and patterns that include a heavy helping of flora
are for the reserved and conservative dresser either. Vibrant women who
want to make a bold statement, while still achieving an absolutely stunning
appearance, will make this trend thrive for months to come, thanks to
Roberto Cavalli and Emilio Pucci. But if you want to go younger, take heed
from Just Cavalli – a print and some styling goes a long way.

BOARDROOM/BEDROOM QUEENTwo worlds collide with the merging of these styles! This mix of sexy meets chic
is for the woman who seeks to up the ante on her daywear and take on the world
with an unexpected edge, like at Balmain and Lanvin. Loose and oversized shapes
are re-defined with purposefully streamlined silhouettes, such as Chloé, Mulberry
and Stella McCartney; the look is powerful, yet doesn’t sacrifice the shape of a
woman’s body. Sheer cutouts, exaggerated slits, and dramatic necklines redefine
the standard pantsuit and give way for one to get creative and let personal style
shine through. After all, if one can find a way merge these boundary-pushing
styles into everyday life, we’re pretty sure she can take on anything.

PILGRIMAGE TO PURITYSometimes ‘less is more’ and this season, that phrase holds true. Clean
lines and simple silhouettes appeared in the spring collections of many
designers, including Burberry Prorsum, Victoria Beckham, and the Queen
of Minimalism, who made her return for spring, Jil Sander. Pure white is
always a big trend for spring, but this time, it’s all about a clean slate. Follow
Riccardo Tisci’s religiously demure – but still sexy – approach at Givenchy,
and Phoebe Philo’s slouchy but chic approach at Céline, and use accessories
to break the shades of white, and let a little skin show with the advice of
Alexander Wang and Emilio Pucci’s Peter Dundas for a truly pure aura.

STRIPED SENSATIONRather than ask which type of man can tackle this season’s stripes, the better
question here would be who can’t? Shown in a variety of color and styled to
appease the preppiest (Salvatore Ferragamo), the edgiest (Vivienne Westwood),
and the most conservative of tastemakers, it’s safe to say any man will be
hard-pressed to find a stripe he can’t relate too. Whether one seeks to evoke
a chic and refined image, or make a bold statement with a mash-up of colors
and patterns (Tommy Hilfiger), there’s no shortage of options to incorporate the
stripe. From the beaches to the boardroom, it’s really never been easier to earn
one’s stripes – whatever they may be.

BRIGHT LIGHTSpring is the time of the year to show your true colors. Our female friends
never shy away. We gentleman, on the other hand, tend to keep the bright
colors at bay, why? A cobalt blue look from Carlos Campos or a golden
hue from Joseph Abboud is the perfect way to show of your style. Guys,
this is the season to really throw some color around and have some fun.
Colorblock your look like Carven and get people to notice you!

SPORTING GOODSSport and fashion collide this season in menswear. Designers like Louis
Vuitton, Prada and Topman Design are taking inspiration from the field,
the court and the pool. Collections feature tech fabrics like neoprene,
sports jersey styles and vibrant colors, even neon, and make sure to invest
in Riccardo Tisci’s iconographic Madonna printed sportswear. Taking on a
chic new look for spring 2013, activewear is fusing comfort, function and
style – now who would refuse a combination like that?

STRAIGHT CUTSimple and clean lines make looking slick easier than ever, but still being
edgy. Boxy shapes and graphic lines make even the sportiest of Prada looks
an appropriate office wear, whilst Lee Roach’s sleeveless coats and straight
lines make even the most clinical of coats a must have. Head to Lanvin for
a new take on the tee, and let Gucci and Acne show you how to mix it up
to be the ultimate minimalistic.

PSYCHEDELICAPrints and color have taken on an almost acidic quality for spring, with
bright hues and crazy prints taken over the manly form. Go down the
Christopher Kane or Versace for the quirkier prints, whilst Topman Design,
JW Anderson and Burberry Prorsum are your guides for bright colors.
Bright has never been so beautiful on a boy!

HARD EDGEThe dapper gentleman may still be around, but designers are becoming
edgier and edgier by the minute. Hark to J.W. Anderson for his new take
on lace, Riccardo Tisci’s Madonna (the religious one, not the musician)
moment at Givenchy, or even Topman Design’s graphic prints and tees.
And if all else fails, Yohji Yamamoto is always on hand.
