• “I thought a train was going past, and all of a sudden the tiles started falling off. I slipped and was holding on to the scaffolding on the edge of the roof with my legs dangling over the edge.”

EFFECTS• Properties suffered structural damage such as cracked

walls• Chimney stacks and roof tiles fell into the street• People were evacuated from houses – some went to

the nearby pub…• Streets were closed for safety reasons• Gas supplies were cut off and over 600 leaks reported• Power supplies were cut off• Telephone services were cut off• Many 999 calls were made• Only 1 person was hospitalised, with a head injury• The Channel Tunnel was designed to cope with

earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 on Richter Scale• There were long queues at burger vans as people

couldn’t cook at home or make a cup of tea
