A Level Accounting

What is the course about?

This subject lays an appropriatefoundation for further studies inAccountancy either at degree level,or through the professionalaccountancy bodies which includeAAT, ICAEW, CIMA, ACCA andCIPFA. The course introducesstudents to the processes involved inthe recording of financialtransactions and information, thepresentation of financial informationto stakeholders such as investors andfinancial institutions, and thepreparation of information formanagement decision making.

What will this course lead on to?

Typically, our students progress to aFoundation or Honours Degree inAccounting or professionalqualifications such as AAT. Somestudents may progress straight toemployment in an accounting role.

A Level Art and Design

What’s the course about?

This course gives you a broad experience in Art and Design. A Level Business Studies


This subject lays an appropriatefoundation for the further study ofBusiness or related subjects inemployment or Higher Education.The course will introduce you to anawareness of how business works, itsenvironment and structure, as well asa study of business practice at alocal, regional, national andinternational level.


Many students progress onto degreelevel at university or gainemployment within a businessenvironment.

A Level Chemistry


This is a course that has been developed by the professional bodyfor Chemistry and leading multinational chemical companies. Ithas been designed to develop your interest and enthusiasm and give youthe knowledge for a possible future career. You will develop the knowledge and understanding of thedifferent areas of Chemistry and howthey relate to each other.


Chemistry is an excellent choice forstudents considering a career in Medicine, Dentistry or EnvironmentalScience. It can also lead to a wide variety of Chemistry based careerssuch as Agricultural Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry,Food and Flavour Chemistry, ForensicChemistry and Materials Science.

A Level Critical Thinking


Critical Thinking is a skills-based ratherthan content-based A Level. You willdevelop the ability to interpret, analyseand evaluate ideas and arguments.This qualification supports thinkingskills in all subject areas, from Arts andHumanities to Sciences. This A Levelsits well alongside a combination ofother A Level subjects.


Critical Thinking offers you excellenttransferable skills and can open manyopportunities for you. Studentsprogress to a wide range of degrees,including Science and Humanities-based subjects.

A Level Environmental Studies


A Level Environmental Studies givesyou an in-depth knowledge of, and insight into, the environment and theprocesses that control and affect it.This includes developing an understanding of how different eventsand cycles within the environment arerelated, how they influence environmental events, the human impacts on these events, and thethings we can do to minimise the prob-lems caused. Key topics covered areWildlife Conservation, Pollution,Global Climate Change and Sustainability.


Environmental Studies is a worthwhilechoice if you are particularly interestedin studying Biology, Geography andEnvironmental Science or if you areconsidering a career in Ecology, Countryside Management, WildlifeConservation, Marine Biology or TownPlanning.

A Level Geography


Geography is a subject whichinvestigates the relationship betweenhuman populations and theirrelationship with their physicalenvironment, from a local to a globallevel. You will be given theopportunity to develop fieldworkskills and study geographical issuesand impacts.


Geography can lead to a wide rangeof Humanities and Science-basedsubjects at degree level as well asmore specialised study inGeography, leading to careers inUrban Development, EnvironmentalManagement and TransportationManagement to name a few.Employers value the wide-rangingcomputer, research and analyticalskills that Geography students bringto work as employees.

A Level Government and Politics


The first year of this course gives acomprehensive introduction to BritishPolitics, including an examination ofelectoral systems, voting behaviour,constitutional issues, the Executive andEurope. Year 2 examines the politicalideologies of Socialism, Liberalism,Conservatism and Fascism. It continues with a critical insight and evaluation of the Government of theUSA.


Government and Politics can lead to awide range of academic and career options. It's an obvious choice for anystudent who wishes to enter the PublicService or Law. However, it is also veryuseful for students who wish to enterBusiness, Foreign Affairs, Journalismand Teaching.

A Level History


The course explores a variety of historical topics which may includeTsarist Russia, Vietnam, Ireland and theUnion and periods of British History.At A2 Level, coursework can includefield trips to study significant events.Studying History develops both knowledge and understanding as wellas analytical and evaluative skills.


History is such a diverse and popularsubject which can be used for entry toemployment or education. You canprogress to university where you canstudy History on its own, as part of acombined degree or perhaps choose acourse such as Media, Sociology or another Humanities based subject. Itcan also lead to careers such as Museum Curator, Journalist, Researcher and Political Assistant.

A Level Humanities


This is an exciting qualification whichwill enable you to acquire highly valuedacademic skills. It encourages you toanalyse and evaluate evidence from arange of disciplines. You will learn toemploy a wide range of skills and techniques from across the Humanitiesand Social Sciences to make sense ofcomplex issues, both past and present.At AS Level, you will develop an understanding of ‘Human Society andthe Natural World’ and ‘People, Communities and Power’. At A2, youwill learn about ‘International andGlobal Controversies’ and conduct anindependent research enquiry whichwill enable you to apply your new skillsand understanding.


Humanities provides an excellent plat-form from which to study a range ofmore specific subjects at degree level,such as Sociology, History and Psychology, as well providing studentsstudying Science and Maths with thebreadth and vital writing skills neededfor HE.

A Level Information Communication Technology


The aim of the course is to encourageyou to develop an understanding ofthe fundamentals of InformationCommunication Technology. It provides both the knowledge and skillssuitable for participation in an evolvinginformation-based society. You willhave opportunities to develop interpersonal, academic and technicalskills that will help you meet careerchallenges in a highly technological future.


Once you have completed thisqualification you may progress on to awide range of IT-based degreecourses, leading to a vast range ofpotential careers in the world ofBusiness, Finance, PublicAdministration, Teaching and DataSystems.

A LevelCourses

A Level Law


The course considers aspects of theEnglish Legal System and differentsources of Law. At A2, learnersstudy Criminal Law. You will learnabout a wide range of crimes andcritically discuss the Law and apply itto a variety of factual situations.Sessions will consist of lectures,group work, debates and research.You will be taught to express youropinions and discuss those of others.The course will be complementedby a visit to court and other places ofinterest.


Many students go on to study Lawdegrees, but the skills developed inLaw are a sound basis for any furtherstudy. Some students use thequalification to work in areas such asthe Courts, Police, LocalGovernment, Business and Finance.

A Level Media


A Level Media Studies gives you abroad range of experiences. Thecourse focuses on analysing the media,exploring representations and evaluating audience responses. You willstudy genre, narrative and representation making connections between the texts and the audience.


Typically, A Level students progress onto university to study a wide choice ofMedia courses. This can lead to a diverse range of career opportunitiessuch as, Animator, Film/Video Editor,Advertising Executive, Journalist andBroadcaster.

A Level Mathematics


A Level Mathematics is a demandingcourse which requires a high level ofmathematical and problem solvingskills. You must be confident at usingAlgebra and must be prepared tospend a lot of time developing andpractising your skills.

This course is for students aged 19or over, who wish to progress touniversity and then follow a careeras a health professional. You will begiven a grounding in HealthScience and Human Biology andwill be able to choose a thirdoption. The course also includes amandatory Personal Developmentmodule, which helps prepare youfor the demands of HigherEducation.

Knowsley Community College offers high quality degreelevel and HND programmes including those inpartnership with Edge Hill University. If you want to takeyour qualifications to a higher level, upgrade your job skillsor learn something new, our Higher Education courseswill provide you with many opportunitiesFoundation Degrees and HNDs are aimedat students who want to progress intheir careers or return to work aftera career break. If you alreadyhave A Levels or a Level 3qualification such as a Level 3BTEC Extended Diploma orNVQ, or have completed anAdvanced Apprenticeship,then a Foundation Degree/

HND is a good option for you. Typically a full-timeFoundation Degree/HND takes two years, covers six toseven modules per year and requires up to 16 hoursattendance per week at College. Please call Student
