Hello all — here’’s the news this month. Just got back from SOFA West (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) here in Santa Fe today, lots of very cool stuff, including many ceramic pieces, big and small, decaled and slick and handmade and rustic and everything in between. I’m looking forward to ART Santa Fe next week. We’re lucky to have these shows here. I took my first class in a long time — a workshop at Santa Fe Clay given by Ayumi Horie [www.ayumihorie.com], a New York state potter I’ve admired for a long time (I own three of her pieces, all with monkeys). It seemed like a win-win class for me since I was already putting oddball animals on my pottery and adding sgraffito and underglaze dots and accents — so drawing animals with a pintool on white slip seemed a natural. Trying new throwing techniques, in this case reductive dry throwing, doesn’t hurt either, although I’m wondering if I’ll ever consider myself a wheel person. I’d forgotten how enjoyable it is to get to know a potter and her techniques in one intense week and interact with different people from around the country, all at different levels and with different reasons for being there. The Railyard has changed so much, too. We used to walk blocks for lunch and coffee, now you can walk over the tracks and actually have a choice within a few minutes’ walk. Not crazy about the parking fees, though. Here’s a couple of the pieces I was able to produce, plus I was inspired to try some monkeys of my own. I’ve been working like mad at my studio when I can, trying to supply all my galleries and shops for the summer. I’m also encouraging people to make appointments to visit the studio, so come out if you can. Hello all — here’’s the news this month. Just got back from SOFA West (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) here in Santa Fe today, lots of very cool stuff, including many ceramic pieces, big and small,

decaled and slick and handmade and rustic and everything in between.

It seemed like a win-win class for me since I was already putting oddball animals on my pottery and adding sgraffito and underglaze

dots and accents — so drawing animals with a pintool on white slip seemed a natural.

—Kathryn Blackmun
