PREFACE

Since time immemorial the RAMAYAN has been accorded the undisputed status of one of the greatest

epics ever. The epic is a virtual encyclopedia encompassing within its pages, our ancient history, culture, geography

and philosophy. Ramayan offers valuable guidance in all the aspects of life. The story of Shri Ram has touched

millions of hearts in the nook and corner of the globe.

We have presented “Katharoop Ramayan” in a storybook form. Illustrations have been placed at appropriate

places. The book has been specially written for the age group 5 - 9. The language has been kept simple; sentences

are short. Wherever necessary, meaning of Sanskrit words have been given in English.

Children reading this “Katharoop Ramayan” will need handholding to begin with. Parents and teachers

may have to sit down with children and explain certain situations and contexts of that historical period.

Finally, we may add that, we are only narrators of a great epic written by a learned and eminent

sage-poet, Valmiki. It is, therefore, natural that our narration may not escape flaws, which we would like you

to bring to our notice. We certainly do welcome suggestions and comments for improvement of this work.

INTRODUCTION

The relevance of RAMAYAN as an epic of the great human and moral value is confined not only to India but to the entire universe. Ramayan is the saga of Lord Shri Ramchandra’s life. His reign is known as Ram Rajya. Ram Rajya means the establishment of an ideal state where contentment, peace and prosperity reign, where there is no strife and bloodshed, where people live in amity and fraternity, cooperating with one another and helping each other. It is a state where there is no want, where people’s basic needs of food, clothing and shelter are met and everyone lives happily.

What was Lord Ramchandra like? What is the significance of values like adherence to truth, respect for others, tolerance, purity, patience and devotion to God? Today, in the twenty-first century, enmeshed as we are in the IT revolution, we are pursuing knowledge. This is the information age. Innovations through research seek to bring happiness to humanity and claim to do so all the time. But happiness is not necessarily contentment. And hence it is imperative to usher in Ram Rajya, which will ensure all-round happiness, peace and contentment. It was with this end in view that Lord Shri Ramchandra willingly went into exile to fulfill His father’s solemn oath. By doing so, he set a shining example of upholding the perennial value systems. He demonstrated to us how to fully marshal and utilize one’s faculties to attain one’s goals. He showed us how to boldly approach and overcome difficult situations. Lord Shri Ramchandra proved that even God could be attained through perseverance.

The Ramayan is an unlimited source of these and several other truths. A daily study and reflection on the values propounded in the Ramayan will be a source of inspiration, guidance and a panacea for all the worries confronting us in this jet age. Short stories, attractive visuals and the messages derived from these are the highlights of the Ramayan. There is no alternative to the Ramayan to help us overcome the troubles and problems in the present day topsy-turvy scenario. Not only children but also teenagers and youth love the stories in the Ramayan and will benefit immensely from delving into the various aspects of the epic. In today’s fast changing world, it is no longer surprising to see brothers become foes. The saga of love and affection between Shri Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna will inspire them to better fraternal relations. Sita’s character provides an outstanding example of a chaste, loyal and devoted wife; Hanuman’s unshakable faith in Lord Shri Ram provides us an example of unparalleled devotion to the Lord. Devotion, strength, strategy and faith find unparalleled confluence in the Ramayan. The events narrated in the epic will definitely have a positive and beneficial impact on the minds of children. The chapters like the meeting of Shri Ram with Bharat, the battle between Jatayu and Ravan, building of the transoceanic bridge to Sri Lanka and the slaying of Kumbhakarn and Ravan are very engrossing. The story of building the bridge across the sea to Lanka highlights the importance of faith and is very popular with children. The story of the squirrel’s help in building the ocean bridge is an objective lesson on faith for children. It also provides them a lot of joy. This assures that immense benefits will be derived from the study of the Ramayan. However, we must be able to make children take to it in a meaningful way. The Ramayan is also an ideal medium to encourage reading habits among children. Children imbibe their culture and value systems through their parents, grandparents and teachers. Every child has to read and reflect on the Ramayan. Only then will the dream of establishing Râm Râjya come true. The responsibility of encouraging the reading habit is by no means restricted to parents and teachers solely, but also to those officials, bureaucrats and functionaries connected with education. Let us pledge ourselves to propagate the message of the Ramayan in every home and school.

1.RATNAKAR THEROBBER

The river Tamasa flowed through a thick forest. The forest was extremely dense and only a small pathway passed through it. Every now and then, wild animals roared and growled, making the atmosphere even more fearful. Travellers held their breath in fear if they had to pass through that forest.

Ratnakar who lived in this very forest was the cause of this fear. He robbed and sometimes even killed those who passed through that jungle.

In fact, Ratnakar was a person of respectable origin. He was a Brahmin by birth. His parents lived in a small hut nearby in the forest. However, Ratnakar had total apathy towards education. He also fell into bad company. This led him to commit thefts and murder for which he did not even feel guilty. Ratnakar’s parents, shocked at his behaviour, soon died in despair.

In course of time, Ratnakar got married and had children. Thereafter he

realized that it was difficult to feed them. He began robbing the travellers and even killed those who resisted him. To keep count of how many people he killed, he dropped a small pebble in a big drum for each victim. He came to be known as Ratnakar – the Robber.

He even took pride in the fact that he killed people. How could a man, devoid of education and proper life, guidance through samskars, have any pious or good thoughts? He spent years in robbing people, killing them and satisfying the needs of his family.

As the days passed the drum was full of pebbles. Ratnakar must have killed innumerable people by then. However, Ratnakar was about to undergo a complete transformation. He was nearing the end of the evil phase

of his life soon. One day Ratnakar hid behind a tree and waiting for a victim. All of a sudden he heard melodious tuned of the

veena. Who could there be playing veena in such a forest? Ratnakar had no clue. A little later he heard the tunes more distinctly. The traveller was also chanting ‘Narayan, Narayan’ in sweet voice. Oh, so he seemed to be a singer. The sweet voice and melodious tunes soothed Ratna’s heart. But he immediately controlled himself. He reminded himself that he had nothing to do with the sweet music and the singer. He must kill the traveller and rob him of whatever belongings he might have. The next moment Narad Muni appeared before him.

“Hey, Narayan! Or whoever you are! Where are you going? No one can go further. I am going to kill you,” said Ratnakar.

Narad Muni asked calmly, “ Kill me? But why?“I earn my livelihood by robbing and killing travellers. Have a look at this drum. I have killed as many people as

there are stones in it.”“How terrible! You have committed terrible sins by killing the innocent.”“Sin? What sin? I do this to bring up my children, to support my family” Ratnakar retorted.“How can you say so? You must do as I say; go home and ask them as to who from your family, is ready to share

your sin of killing the innocent.”“There is no need to ask them. I am sure they will say ‘yes, we are with you.”“You are under a wrong impression. Go and ask them.”“Oh! So you imagine you are going escape from here while I am away?”“No, no, not at all. I swear by the name of Narayan, whom I worship, that I shall not budge from here till you

return.”Ratnakar somehow believed Narad Muni’s words and reached home.

Page 6: Katharoop Ramayan

“Father, what have you brought for us today?” asked his wife and children eagerly.“Be patient. Answer my question first. So far I have killed many people and looted the dead, to satisfy your needs.

Though these were sinful acts, I committed them to entirely for you. Therefore, are you ready to share my sins?” Ratnakar was talking to them seriously.

“What nonsense! We never asked you to kill people. It is your duty to support us. You could have done it in any other way. You did not commit sins on our advice. So the question of sharing them does not arise at all.”

Lessons to Remember:Near anddear ones may give us company inprosperity but desert us in adversity.

2.NARADMUNI’SADVICE

Ratnakar was completely shattered on knowing that none in his family was going to share his sins. He returned back to Narad Muni. “O great Rishi! You have taught me a lesson. All are with us in times of prosperity but none in adverse circumstances. I really repent for killing innocent people. Now you must be my redeemer and save my soul,” Ratnakar pleaded with him, grieving all the while. Narad Muni assured him in an affectionate manner. “Don’t be so disheartened, Ratna. Your repentance has already started lessening your sins. A person certainly changes for better if his heart is filled with remorse. Now do one thing. Chant ‘Ram, Ram’ non-stop. You will be free from all your earlier sins.” Ratnakar vowed to do accordingly. “O great sage! I will obey your order. I will stop robbing people from this very instant. Now I shall do nothing but chant Shree Ram’s name. I am grateful to you for showing me the right path.” Ratnakar’s mind and approach towards life was completely changed. Afterwards chanting ‘Narayan, Narayan,’ Narad Muni proceeded on his way.

Lesson to remember: Theadvice of a great soul is always redemptive.

3. RATNAKAR BECOMES RISHIVALMIKI

Ratnakar was now a completely changed person. He began chanting “Ram, Ram’ with full concentration. He did it with such a devotion that he soon entered into a trance and went on chanting ‘Ram, Ram’ becoming totally unaware of his surroundings.

Days, months and years passed. Ratnakar never stopped chanting ‘Ram, Ram’. He sat under a tree as still as a statue, so much so that ants took him to be a stone and built a huge anthill over him. Several years later Narad Muni happened to pass along the same path. He heard the words, ‘Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram…’ He looked here and there but did not see any one. He then realized that the sound came from the nearby anthill.

“Wake up, Ratnakar. You are great. Your austere penance has dissolved all your sins. Hence onward you will be called Maharshi Valmiki. You are going to compose Shree Ram’s life story in verse form. You will attain immortality and worldwide fame through the composition.”

The penance had metamorphosed Ratnakar completely.Maharshi Valmiki looked glorious. Once he was going towards the river Tamasa for his daily bath. While walking

under a shady tree, a kraunch bird fell in front of him. In a moment a female kraunch descended to the ground and began crying pitiably, circling over the dead body of her mate. The male kraunch was bleeding heavily. Someone had shot an arrow at it. Valmiki was moved at that sight. He got extremely angry with the man who killed the bird and exclaimed:

“O hunter, you too will not enjoy any happiness.”Spontaneously, Rishi Valmiki cursed the hunter. He uttered the curse in Sanskrit and in verse form. After a while

he thought that he was wrong in cursing the hunter.“Oh, what have I done? It only proves that I have not yet conquered my anger.”He felt dejected with this thought. But Brahma the Creator Himself appeared before Valmiki. Rishi Valmiki bowed

low to him and apologized: “O Lord, please forgive me. I cursed the hunter out of anger.”“Great sage, don’t feel sad. You uttered the curse in Sanskrit and in verse form. Goddess Saraswati has blessed

you. Now commence the glorious task of composing Shree Ram’s life story in verse form. You will attain immortal fame and your writings will continue to inspire the world for eternity.” Brahma the Creator blessed Valmiki thus.

Maharshi Valmiki felt happy when he heard these words. He respected Brahma’s advice and began composing The Ramayan.

Lessons to remember:It is better to get over one’s anger.Penance leads to success.

4.DASHARATHA GREATBUTUNFORTUNATE KING

The kingdom of Kosal was situated south of the great Himalayas. Ayodhya was its capital. King Dasharath ruled

over Kosal. He was very brave and efficient in discharging his duties towards the subjects. All were very happy under his rule.

King Dasharath had three queens – Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyee. All the three queens were very virtuous and loving by nature. He was happy in their company. But one thing pained him. Although he had three wives he had no children. There was no heir to the throne. He used to go hunting to try and forget this troubling thought. Besides being a great warrior, Dasharath was also an expert hunter.

One day Dashrath ventured into the forests for hunting. Nothing went right that day as he did not get a single quarry. Dashrath felt frustrated but was determined not to return home empty handed. As daylight faded and it started becoming darker, Dasharath climbed on a tree and patiently waited for some animal to come to the nearby river. He was confident that animals would come at night to quench their thirst. Mere sound was also enough for Maharaj Dashrath. He was a perfect marksman and could hit any target by sound alone.

The plan was perfect. But the best of plans can often go wrong. Something which one never imagines does happen.

It so happened that a young boy named Shravan had come to the same jungle along with his aged parents, who were also blind. Shravan loved his parents a lot. They had expressed a desire to go on pilgrimage to all holy places. Shravan was taking them to Kashi to fulfil their desire. Being poor they could not afford to go by a chariot. So Shravan carried his parents on his shoulder and walked on foot towards Kashi. He believed that his duty towards his parents was of utmost importance.

While going through a jungle they rested under a tree. After some time his parents said: “Child, we are thirsty. Please go and see if water is available somewhere.” Though it was night, Shravan immediately went out in search of water, soon finding a river. Relieved, he immersed his jug in the water. It created a bubbling sound. King Dasharath, who was somewhere nearby hoping to find some prey before he returned, heard the sound. He thought that some animal had come to drink water. Very sure of his ability to hit home by sound, Dasharath immediately picked up his bow and despatched his arrow in the direction of the sound.

Alas! The moment Dasharath’s arrow hit the target someone screamed in extreme pain. The king, struck with horror, immediately realized that he had hit some human being and not an animal He rushed to the riverside and saw a young boy, writhing and groaning in pain, as the arrow had pierced through his heart.

“Oh! Fie upon me! Child who are you? From where have you come? What are you doing here in the jungle in such a time of the night?” Dasharath’s voice was breaking with sobs even as he asked the fallen boy questions one after another.

The wounded Shravan said in a weak voice, “I am Shravan. I had come to this river to fetch water for my thirsty parents. I was carrying them on my shoulders to Kashi to fulfil their desire to go on pilgrimage. But O King, I am completely doomed. Not only will their desire be unfulfilled but also my death will aggravate their misery. But you are not to blame. It is only a cruel stroke of fate. Now please carry this jug of water to my blind parents without further delay.” So saying Shravan breathed his last.

Dasharath reached Shravan’s parents with heavy heart. When Shravan’s parents heard footsteps, they said, “Dear child, we notice that you have come back. Have you got water? Please give it to us. How thirsty we are! But why are you silent? Are you angry with us? Did you have to take a lot of trouble to bring water? Shravan, if you do not utter a word them we shall not touch a single drop of water. Child, we are fully aware of the hardships you have to bear for us. But… why are you silent? Do say something child. We love you very much and cannot live without you.”

King Dasharath could no longer control his sobs. Tears rolled down from the eyes. The old couple at once became suspicious. Shravan’s father asked in a sharp voice, “Who is this? You are not Shravan? Who are you? Where is our Shravan?”

“I …I am not Shravan. I have committed an unpardonable sin. I have killed your only virtuous son. I mistook your son for an animal who might have come to drink water at the lake, and hit him with an arrow. Please forgive me.”

“O you devil! Who are you? You have killed our only child, our support. What a monstrous act,” cried out the old couple, shocked beyond belief.

“I am King Dasharath of Kosal. I beseech you to forgive me.” “Oh, so you are King Dasharath! O king, what made you commit such a terrible deed? What have you gained from this? In fact, you have hunted us. No doubt, you will have to face the consequences of your misdeed. Listen to the curse of old and dying parents ¯ you too will die grieving for your son from whom you shall be separated. Dasharath, we

are extremely helpless in this vast world. Dear Shravan, you have deserted your blind parents and have gone ahead. We too, will join you.”

Both of them died in immediately. Dasharath had to perform their last rites.King Dasharath returned to Ayodhya. He heart was heavy with sorrow at the thought of the sin he had

unknowingly committed.

5. KINGDASHARATHBECOMESA FATHER

Dasharath had killed an innocent child – Shravan. He suffered from a guilty conscience. The curse “you also will die grieving for your son” haunted him. He was struck by remorse. But he also thought that if he were destined to die of sorrow for his son then he would have to have a son first. This thought brought him some relief. He was happy that there would be an heir to the throne.

Yet, he was worried, not knowing how long he would have to wait for a child. At last he expressed his anxiety to Guru.

Guru Vashishtha said: “You will have to perform the Putra Kameshti Yagya. Yagya Narayan will bless you and fulfil your desire.”

The king made all the preparations for the yagya. He chose a place near river Sarayu, invited all kings and rishis, housed them royally and distributed a lot of wealth generously.

On an auspicious day, the yagya was performed as per Vedic injunctions. The King along with his three queens performed the yagya conducted by the rishis. Sacred fire consecrated the surroundings.

Putra Kameshti mantras were chanted towards the conclusion. And then an illustrious figure emerged from the sacred fire. He was holding a golden vessel in his hands. It contained divine payasa (pudding). The divine figure addressed

Maharaj Dasharath and said: “O King, the gods are pleased with you. Distribute the payasa in this vessel among your queens. Let them consume it. You will have four bright sons.”

So saying Yagya Narayan disappeared. The king gave half of the payasa to Maharani Kausalya and the remaining half was distributed between Sumitra

and Kaikeyee. The queens consumed it happily.Later, all the three queens conceived. In the month of Chaitra, on the ninth day of the first fortnight, Kausalya

gave birth to a son. He was Ram. Sumitra gave birth to Lakshman and Shatrughna while Kaikeyee to Bharat. The people of Ayodhya were overjoyed. Ayodhya was festooned and decorated to celebrate the birth of four princes. Sweets, clthes and wealth were distributed in lavish abundance.

Maharaj Dasharath, who otherwise did not have a single offspring, had four sons after doing the Putra KameshtiYagya. The king and all the queens were happy beyond measure. In those days each king had to educate his princes thoroughly and had to train them in warfare too. Maharaj Dasharath also made arrangements for the same. Experts acharyas (learned teachers) taught them horse riding, chariot driving, hunting, archery and the use of weapons. The four princes also studied the Vedas and other branches of knowledge.

All the princes had deep affection for each other. However, Lakshman loved Ram more than anything. He could not leave Ram even for a moment. Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyee too had affinity towards all the children. They loved all the princes equally. All brothers respected Ram who was the eldest.

The princes, who were healthy, robust, handsome and virtuous, conquered the hearts of all. Ram was virtuous, kind and polite to all. There was no trace of vanity and conceit in his behaviour. Maharaj Dasharath knew that the people would be happy under Ram’s reign. He decided to enthrone Ram after a few years.

6.VISHWAMITRA RISHI’SVISIT TO AYODHYA

Brahmarshi Vishwamitra paid a visit to Ayodhya when all was well there. He had heard about Ram’s valour as well as his kind and respectful nature. Maharaj Dasharath duly welcomed the great rishi. “Long live Rishi Vishwamitra! O virtuous one! I am blessed by your visit. Please let me know what can I do for you. I will try my best to satisfy your desire,” promised Dasharath straightaway. Vishwamitra replied solemnly: “Dasharath, I have been trying to perform a yagya for general peace and well being. But it remains incomplete as cruel Rakshasas successfully obstruct and defile it. My yagya needs protection.” Upon hearing this, Dasharath said, “All right. I shall myself come along with my huge army to fight those rakshasas.” “No, that will not do. Instead of you and your army I want only your sons – Ram and Lakshman. If both of them come with me I am sure to complete my yagya,” said Vishwamitra. Dasharath was rather shocked when he heard Vishwamitra’s demand. He tried to wriggle out of this saying, “But both Ram and Lakshman are quite young. It is not child’s play to fight those Rakshasas. How can children like Ram and Lakshman face those devilish beings. It will be tough for even an experienced warrior like me. O Rishi, I am worried about my sons. Please don’t insist on taking these children along with you. I am ready to come with my army.” While speaking to Vishwamitra, the old curse “you also will die weeping for your son” haunted Dasharath’s mind. Vishwamitra got angry and said: “Dasharath, what sort of example are you setting? It is a disgrace for anyone in the Raghu Dynasty to go back on a word once given. Don’t you recollect what you uttered while receiving me? ‘I shall try my best to satisfy your desire.’ How do you forget them so soon? I shall not stay here a minute if this is your decision. You be happy in your throne after having brought lasting disgrace on the royal dynasty of the Ikshwaakus.” Dasharath trembled with fear and the assembly also sat frozen. Everyone knew Vishwamitra’s temper and the power of his tapasya. Guru Vashisht then wisely intervened. He assured the king that Ram and Lakshman would be safe under Brahmarshi Vishwamitra. Dasharath then made up his mind to send Ram and Lakshman with Vishwamitra. He said, “O Rishi! Please do not be annoyed with me. I said so out of love for my children and also by taking into consideration their young age and lack of experience. Be assured, I shall never go back on my words.” Lessons to remember: “PRAN JAYE PER VACHANNA JAYE” Promises made mustbe kept at any cost.

7. VISHWAMITRA’S YAGYA

After seeking the blessing of their parents Ram and Lakshman embarked on their journey along with Rishi Vishwamitra. They proceeded along the banks of river Sarayu. Shree Ram and Lakshman enjoyed an unusual and unprecedented experience of the journey through the forest. After a few days in the forest, Rishi Vishwamitra told them: “You have to undertake an important task of rescuing this earth from the clutches of Rakshasas. So I give you two great mantras – Balaa and Atibalaa.” Rishi Vishwamitra taught Shree Ram and Lakshman the divine mantras that had the power of making them free from hunger, fatigue and sleep. Shree Ram and Lakshman mastered them immediately. Vishwamitra also gave them advanced knowledge of the use of the bow, plus the knowledge of innumerable divine astras and shastras, (weapons) their deployment, use and recall. A Rakshasi called Taadaka lived in that forest. No human being dared to inhibit the forest because Taadaka and her son Mareech used to kill and eat human beings. Taadaka was a very powerful, wicked and blood thirsty Rakshasi. As they penetrated deeper into the thick forest, Vishwamitra asked Ram to put an end to Taadaka’s existence. Ram asked the rishi: “Maharshi, I am confident of my abilities. I can certainly kill Taadaka. But one thing troubles me. Isn’t it sinful to kill a woman?” “To kill a cannibal Rakshasi who eats innocent human beings is not a sin at all. On the contrary it is a brave and noble act committed for the people’s safety and well being.”As they walked few more steps they heard thunderous roaring and noise of the trees being uprooted. They realized that Taadaka was coming. Her roaring became unbearable as she came nearer. When Taadaka saw these three men she advanced towards them to devour them. Shree Ram was careful. He immediately shot arrows at her and cut down both her arms. She became very violent and leaped towards him. But another of Ram’s arrow pierced her heart and she fell dead with a shriek. The forest was free from danger now. All the people of the forest thanked Ram. Soon Shree Ram, Lakshman and Vishwamitra reached the rishi’s hermitage in the deep forest called Siddhashram. Learned sadhus and rishis had already assembled there to take part in the yagya. Vishwamitra once again began his yagya on an auspicious day. Ram and Lakshman were given the responsibility of guarding it. The whole atmosphere became pleasant as the mantras were chanted by many rishis. For five days the yagya went on without any trouble. All the rishis carried out yagya as per the Vedic manner. The sixth day was the concluding day. Taadaka’s son Mareech, who was also a chieftain of the Rakshasas, getting wind of the ongoing yagya, did not want to waste time. He and his lieutenant Subaahu attacked the sacred site of yagya. Many more Rakshasas joined them. The attackers came through the air and tried to shower meat, dead bodies and filth on the yagya site from the sky. Shree Ram and Lakshman, however, showered arrows and prevented the unholy substances from even touching the ceremonial place. They then slew the invading Rakshasas easily, littering the forest ground with their dead bodies. Mareech and Subaahu were furious and attacked Ram. They were conceited about their strength and thought they could easily kill these two young boys. They completely misjudged the strength and ability of Shree Ram and Lakshman. Ram’s bow incessantly showered arrows at them. One fiery arrow pierced Subaahu’s throat, killing him. With a second powerful arrow Mareech was carried aloft and hurled into the sea. Thus Ram and Lakshman completely destroyed the army of the Rakshasas. The yagya concluded very peacefully and without any further disturbance. All the rishis praised Shree Ram and Lakshman wholeheartedly; it was because of them that the yagya could be successfully completed. All the rishis expressed their gratitude to both the princes. Vishwamitra’s joy knew no bounds. His decision of bringing Ram and Lakshman to protect his yagya had proved a wise one.

8.SEETASWAYAMVAR

By killing the Rakshasas, Ram and Lakshman not only helped Vishwamitra in car-rying out his yagya but also removed fear from the minds of ordinary people.

King Janak was the ruler of Mithila. He had announced marriage of his daughter, Seeta. Actually, Seeta was not born to Raja Janak. He had found her in a wooden box while ploughing his field. He called her Seeta as she was found in a field. Seeta grew up to be beautiful and intelligent.

When she was only a child, Seeta used to play with a huge bow. It was called the Shiv Dhanush (the bow of Lord Shiva). It was so heavy that very few could even move it. Yet Seeta loved to play with it and could lift it easily.

As Seeta grew up into womanhood, Raja Janak thought carefully about choosing a groom for her. He decided to arrange a Swayamvar, declaring his condition for winning

Seeta’s hand. Whoever would lift the Shiv Dhanush, bend and string it, would marry Seeta. Many kings came to Mithila for the Swayamwar. Most of them had no idea of how heavy the Shiv Dhanush really was. They thought that they would very easily lift the bow, string it and win Seeta. All were daydreaming and waiting eagerly to the day of the Swayamvar. Rishi Vishwamitra too had heard about Seeta’s Swayamvar being organised. In his opinion, only a virtuous, intelligent and brave young man like Ram was fit to be Seeta’s husband. He decided to take Ram and Lakshman to Mithila. The city of Mithila was full of kings and princes who looked attractive in their royal apparels. Their attire added to the charm of the city that was in a festive mood. Shree Ram and Lakshman reached there along with rishi Vishwamitra. Though both were actually royal princes, they were clad in the garb of rishis. They stood out in the crowd of richly clad kings and princes. Their lustre was of a divine calibre. The condition for the Swayamvar was once again announced. Then the huge Shiv Dhanush dragged by many hefty soldiers was brought into the hall and was placed in the centre. One by one, the assembled kings and princes came forward and tried to lift the mighty bow but failed miserably in their attempts. Most of them could not move the bow even an inch. Some of the kings did not even make an attempt. Maharaj Janak was anxious. Would anyone win Seeta’s hand? Vishwamitra realized that the time had come for Shree Ram to step forward. He asked Shree Ram to go ahead. Shree Ram touched his guru’s feet and approached the Shiv Dhanush confidently. All kings laughed in mockery, as he looked too young. But the next moment they were stunned into silence. Ram had lifted the bow very easily and as he bent it, it broke into two with a deafening thunder. All were stunned at Shree Ram’s achievement. Maharaj Janak’s happiness knew no bounds. Seeta’s face shone with joy. Shree Ram was handsome and his great valour was established through this mighty deed. Seeta stepped forward and garlanded him.

9.PARASHURAM’S PRIDE IS VANQUISHED

This good news was sent to Ayodhya. Overjoyed, Dasharath along with his three queens arrived in Mithila. Ram’s marriage to Seeta took place in ceremony. Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna too were married. Janak’s second daughter and Seeta’s sister Urmila was married to Lakshman; Janak’s nieces, Mandavi and Shrutakirti married Bharat and Shatrughna respectively. Raja Janak, also known as Videha, was delighted that he was now related to the Ikshvaaku Dynasty through this matrimonial alliance. There was unexpected trouble on their way back. The mighty warlike rishi, Bhagwan Parashuram had learnt about Shree Ram’s breaking the ShivDhanush. His ego was challenged. “How can Ram be greater than me?” he thought. He was furious and wanted to test Shree Ram’s valour. Parashuram met Ram and his family while they were returning to Ayodhya. He said to Shree Ram in a stern tone: “Are you the person who has broken the Shiv Dhanush? I don’t believe it. If you are indeed capable of doing it, try to string this Vishnu Dhanush. I shall then honour you by fighting with you.” Shree Ram bowed to the angry rishi-warrior and tried to pacify him saying, “Be calm, great soul! I do not wish to fight with you. I always speak the truth. Yes, I did break the ShivDhanush. Please cast away your anger. I respect and adore you.” Parusharam was unrelenting. He said: “Ram! I have not come to listen to sweet talk. I want to test your valour. You must accept the challenge of my Vishnu Dhanush.” Ram replied: “I do not intend to insult you. But if you are so adamant, I must prove my mettle.” Then Shree Ram bowed to Parashuram and his father Dasharath and easily bent the VishnuDhanush. Parashuram’s pride was vanquished and he recognized Ram’s divinity. Maharaj Dasharath returned to Ayodhya along with his sons and daughters-in-law. There was joy all around.

10. MANTHARA’S EVIL ADVICE

Maharaj Dasharath had grown very old. All his sons were now married. They were virtuous, brave and loved by the people. He decided to anoint his eldest son Shree Ram as yuvraj (crown prince) and retire into Vanaprasthashram (the third stage of one’s life according to Hindu tradition). Dasharath consulted Guru Vasishth as well as his ministers. All whole-heartedly welcomed the ideal of anointing Shree Ram as the crown prince. He asked the royal priests to select an auspicious day for the ceremony. The news anointing Shree Ram made the citizens of Ayodhya very happy. Their hearts were filled with joy because they were to have Shree Ram as their crown prince who was their protector and benefactor. The three queens too were happy, as Shree Ram was loved by one and all. At that time Bharat and Shatrughna had gone to their maternal grandfather’s kingdom. Hence they did not know about this good news. As the auspicious day came nearer, people decorated Ayodhya. They cleaned the streets, drew rangolis in front of their houses, festooned their dwellings and lighted lamps. Temples throughout the kingdom of Kosal were brightly decorated. All were waiting eagerly for that auspicious day. But then man proposes and God disposes. In queen Kaikeyee’s chamber, something nasty was cooking. Kaikeyee had great affection for Shree Ram. She knew that being the eldest among the four sons, it was Shree Ram’s birthright to get the throne. She was indeed happy. But there are evil people who poison happy lives. Manthara was Kaikeyee’s favourite maid. She doted on Kaikeyee and Bharat but had a strange animosity towards Shree Ram. The news that Shree Ram would be anointed as yuvraj did not please her in the least. This had to be somehow stopped. Manthara hit upon a crooked idea. Long ago, an Asur (a community that was the enemy of the gods, and was closely related to the Rakshasas) called Shambar had fought the Devas in a battle. On that occasion Maharaj Dasharath went to the help of the gods. Maharani Kaikeyee had accompanied him to battle. Unfortunately, during the course of the battle, the axis of his chariot wheel broke. Dasharath was also badly wounded by Shambar. Kaikeyee supported the chariot with her bare hands, displaying great courage and presence of mind. She took Dasharath to safety. Dasharath’s assistance enabled the Devas to defeat and slay Shambar. After regaining consciousness, Dasharath was extremely pleased with Kaikeyee. He said to her: “Dear Kaikeyee, you have shown great courage in rescuing me. I could achieve victory only because of you. I am very pleased with you. Ask me for any two boons you want.” Kaikeyee replied: “Lord, I have not done anything extraordinary. How could I remain passive when your life was in danger? I merely did my duty.” “But I could achieve this victory only because of your help. Do ask me for something.” said Dasharath. “All right. If you insist so much I shall ask for these two boons offered by you now sometime in future. I do not need anything now,” replied Kaikeyee. “As you wish,” replied Dasharath. This episode was forgotten for many years. Manthara knew about this event and had not forgotten it. She cunningly decided to convince Kaikeyee of her wicked intent. She went hurriedly to Kaikeyee’s chamber. “Manthara, why are in such a foul mood? Isn’t everything well?” asked Kaikeyee. “O queen! A great misfortune is about to befall you,” said Manthara in an agitated manner. Kaikeyee was surprised. She asked, “Why do you say so? What misfortune can be there on such an auspicious occasion?” “Kaikeyee, listen to whatever I am going to tell you. It is for the good of you and your son Bharat. Ram is going to be crowned yuvraj tomorrow.” Manthara looked worried. “This is great news for all of us, Manthara. Ram is worthy of this honour. But why are you so glum?” asked Kaikeyee. Manthara burst out in anger, “It seems you have stopped thinking. You are happy at something that should make you feel nervous and tremble in fear. “Why do you say so?” asked Kaikeyee. “I am worried about you and your son Bharat.” “Why don’t you speak clearly?” “O queen, once Ram becomes a king, your son will have to serve him for his whole life. Not only that but Ram may even insult you and treat you badly. You shall have to become a servant of Kausalya.” “Manthara! What nonsense is this! I have full faith in Ram. He will never do anything of this sort.” “Your naive faith will dupe you. Only then will you realize how true I was.” “No Manthara. This is too much.” Kaikeyee was shocked. “Kaikeyee, once a person acquires power he gets intoxicated and blind to everything else. Another fact is that once

Page 21: Katharoop Ramayan

Ram becomes king, Bharat will never have a chance in his lifetime. You are supposed to be Dasharath’s favourite queen. Then why did Dasharath announce Ram’s coronation in Bharat’s absence? I suggest a plan and hope you will accept it. Of course, I am not going to gain anything from it. But only out of sheer love for you and Bharat I ask you to act now.” “Tell me clearly once and for all.” “Long ago in a war between the gods and Asuras, you had accompanied the king. He had requested you to ask for two boons,” Manthara reminded her. “Yes indeed. I had totally forgotten about it. But what does all that have to do with what is happening now?” asked Kaikeyee. Manthara said slyly: “Everything. But only if you are firm.” “What do you mean?” “Listen. You must banish Shree Ram into the forest and ask the king to anoint Bharat as yuvraj.” “Oh no! Maharaj will be furious and I will be blamed for life by the people who love Shree Ram deeply,” Kaikeyee said. “You will have to repent for the rest of your life if you don’t act now. Be adamant and hard-hearted. Forget all criticism. Just think of your and Bharat’s future. Do you know what will happen otherwise? The king will retire into Vanasprasthashram after anointing Ram. You will be left alone. I have given my advice and done my duty. It is up to you to decide.” Manthara had succeeded in poisoning Kaikeyee’s mind. She came to believe that whatever Manthara said was indeed true. She decided to act according to the spiteful Manthara’s advice.

Lessons to remember: Manproposes, God disposes. The wickedalways destroy goodwork.

11.KAIKEYEE’S ADAMANT DEMANDS

King Dasharath came to Kaikeyee’s chamber to spend some time with her before the next day’s ceremony. “Kaikeyee! Kaikeyee!!” Dasharath called out. But when Dasharath entered Kaikeyee’s chamber, he was shocked. Kaikeyee lay on the floor, silent and angry. When he tried to speak to her, she gave him a very cold shoulder and ignored him. “What had happened, Kaikeyee? Why are you so sad on such a happy occasion? Has anyone insulted you? What is wrong with you?” Dasharath was anxious to know. Kaikeyee spoke after a while; “Whatever is going on is enough to make me sad.” “What! I do not understand a bit,” Dasharath replied. “How can you! You love only Ram. You are prepared to do anything for him. You have no love for Bharat,” said Kaikeyee in an accusing tone. “I love Bharat as much as I love Ram. But why do you say this?” Dasharath asked her. Kaikeyee finally came to the point. “You must fulfil my wishes today,” she said. “I promise you, Kaikeyee. But shed your anger,” pleaded Dasharath. “In the past, you had promised me to grant two things whenever I would ask for them.” “Yes, yes. If you want anything now you can certainly ask for them. I shall certainly satisfy your desire.” Dasharath promised. “Do you promise?” “Don’t worry. I promise, I will!!” said the king solemnly. Kaikeyee put forth her demands. “Banish Ram to the forest for fourteen years and secondly, enthrone my Bharat and make him the crown prince.” Dasharath fell down as if struck by lightning. He shouted: “Kaikeyee! What have you asked for! Not even a wicked enemy will desire this. Ask for anything else. Oh! My heart bleeds upon hearing your words.” “Never. I have expressed my wishes and you will have to satisfy them.” Maharaj Dasharath was shocked beyond words. His senses were as though numbed, Tears rolled down his cheeks. His body almost became lifeless. Ultimately he had no choice but to keep his promise, as it was the time-honoured tradition in the Raghu Dynasty. Queen Kaikeyee had her way. But since that moment Dasharath’s health started falling rapidly. Ayodhya resembled an eclipsed moon, a garden devastated by a storm. The people of the kingdom felt that happiness in life had left them. All were drowned in sorrow. The glittering city was enveloped in darkness.

King Dasharath was shocked into numbness. But Shree Ram consoled his father.

“Father! The people of the Raghu Dynasty value their promise above everything else. Let Bharat be the yuvraj. He is no less worthy than me. I am ready to go to the forest for fourteen years. You need not feel sad for it. I have no anger towards mother Kaikeyee.”

Shree Ram consoled his grieving mother Kausalya too. He said that it was his duty as a son to act as per his father’s promise.

Shree Ram cast away his royal dress and wore the clothes made of bark. Seeta too decided to accompany Shree Ram into the forest. She could not think of being separated from him. She would not give up the company of her husband and preferred forest-life to the luxury of the palace.

Shree Ram tried his best to dissuade her from coming to the forest. He explained that she would have to face many dangers including ferocious wild animals. There might also be great difficulties in getting even shelter

and food. But all his arguments were in vain. Seeta was adamant in her decision. She reiterated that she could not and would not live without him. However difficult it would be, she would live in forest with him. Shree Ram had no choice but to take her with him.

Lakshman too, was adamant about accompanying his elder brother. He loved Shree Ram very much. He also could not imagine his life without Ram. Wherever Shree Ram went, Lakshman simply had to be with him to serve him. Lakshman too decided to go with Ram.

After seeking the blessing of their parents, rishis and other elders Shree Ram, Seeta and Lakshman embarked on their journey. Sumantra took them up to the banks of the Sarayu in the royal chariot. Thousands of people followed them on foot. At last, Shree Ram requested them very earnestly: “Beloved citizens of Ayodhya, it would be better for you to return back to Ayodhya. Please co-operate with my brother Bharat in all the possible ways. My fourteen years of exile will be over soon and your blessings will certainly make my forest life happy. Please do not come further. Return to your homes.”

The people of Ayodhya returned to their homes with their hearts heavy with sorrow. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta spent that night on the banks of the Sarayu.

13.ONMOUNTCHITRAKUT

Guha, king of the Nishad community received the news of Shree Ram’s banishment and arrival in the forest. He was personal friend of Shree Ram. Giha came eagerly to meet Shree Ram, welcomed the three of them and offered fruits. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta too were pleased to meet him and stayed with Guha that night. Next day Shree Ram and Lakshman tied their hairs in matted locks above their head by applying the juice extracted from banyan tree. Guha took them to the other side of the river Ganga by his boat. He too was sad while seeing off Ram.

They went first to Pushkarni then to Prayag. At Prayag they bathed in the Triveni Sangam. Later, the three reached Bharadwaj Muni’s ashram. He welcomed and blessed them. The three of them spent the night at the ashram.

Next day, they resumed their journey and reached Mount Chitrakoot. The beauty of the place was breathtaking. They were delighted to meet rishi Valmiki here. He advised Shree Ram to stay on Chitrakoot for a while. Lakshman built a small ashram. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta made it their forest home.

After dropping Shree Ram, Seeta and Lakshman near the banks of the Ganga, Sumantra returned back to Ayodhya in sorrow. He told king Dasharath that Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta were living at Chitrakoot. King Dasharath was unable to bear his separation from Ram. His health started deteriorating.

Soon afterwards, Dasharath who was unable to bear this great sorrow, passed away chanting ‘O Ram, my dear Ram.’ The curse of Shravan’s parents years ago, had come true. Dasharath’s end was truly tragic. When he left for his heavenly abode, none of his four sons were by his side.

In that age the body of a dead king was not cremated unless the new king was enthroned. Therefore, Guru Vashishth sent Sumantra to fetch Bharat from his maternal home of Keykaya. Sumantra told Bharat and Shatrughna that Guru Vashishth had called them very urgently to Ayodhya.

Bharat soon reached Ayodhya with a troubled mind during his journey. He was shocked at finding a gloomy atmosphere and faces. He suspected some tragic event.

Bharat burst into tears when he learnt of the death of his father. He fell at Guru Vashishth’s feet and asked Shree Ram’s whereabouts. Lakshman and Seeta also were not to be seen around. What had happened? He shot questions one after another.

“Let me know what has happened.”Vashisht reported haltingly: “Have courage, Bharat. The final rites of your father await fulfillment. Respect your

father’s wish. Accept the throne.”When Bharat met his mother Kaikeyee, he finally came to know what actually had taken place in Ayodhya during

his absence. Kaikeyee tried to plead with him: “Bharat, be wise. I have managed to get you the throne with great effort. Don’t refuse to accept the crown and its immense power.”

Bharat’s anger was beyond control. He roared at his mother: “Greedy and heartless woman, I am ashamed of you. I lust neither for power nor for wealth. You are worse than a witch, because you have banished Shree Ram to the forest and have killed your husband. I am ashamed to call myself your son. I hate you. You are my enemy and not my mother. I do not want to hear a word from you. I shall go to Shree Ram, bring him back and with full respect and honour and restore the throne to him.”

Bharat and Shatrughna immediately left for Mount Chritrakoot with Ayodhya’s huge army.

14.BHARAT MEETS SHREE RAM

One day Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta were sitting on a huge rock and enjoying the beautiful scenery. All of a sudden Lakshman noticed that huge columns of dust were rising from the ground. Observing more closely he realized that a huge army was coming towards Chitrakoot. Lakshman was immediately on his guard.

He also saw royal flags of the approaching army. Lakshman thought that Bharat was coming with Ayodhya’s huge army to kill Shree Ram and secure the throne for good. He immediately picked up his bow and called out to Shree Ram: “Bharat, with his huge army is coming to slay us. I am ready to teach him a lesson. I shall destroy him and his army.”

Ram replied calmly: “Make no haste, Lakshman. No doubt Bharat is coming towards us. But my insight into Bharat’s nature tells me that he does not have any evil intentions.”

“Ram, let us be careful.” Lakshman was truly angry. “I am quite careful. You too be alert. But my inner voice says that Bharat has not come to fight. Perhaps he has

got some message for us.” Ram knew Bharat’s character deeply. By that time Bharat reached the foot of the mountain. He rushed towards Shree Ram traefully and fell at his feet,

sobbing. Ram picked him up and said, “Welcome my child. I am delighted to see you.” Bharat embraced Shree Ram and said: “Ram, our father died soon after your departure. On his deathbed he had

only your name on his lips. Please forgive me. It is only because of my cruel mother that you have come to the forest in exile and we have lost our father.”

“What? Have we lost our father? Alas! What a stroke of cruel fate!” Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta were lost in grief when Bharat conveyed the news of Dasharath’s death to them.

Shree Ram somehow controlled himself though he was very sad. He said to Bharat: “We will carry out the remaining rituals here. You must return to Ayodhya and rule over the kingdom. It is the only way of satisfying our father’s soul.”

“O Ram! Please, I shall not go back alone. You alone must be the king. Our father also wanted you to rule Ayodhya. I have come to take you back. Not only I but also all Ayodhya wants you to return. Please, listen to me. I have brought the army and the entire royal paraphernalia to take you back with due respect and honour,” Bharat pleaded with his elder brother.

But Shree Ram was equally firm and said: “No Bharat. I have no desire to obtain either the throne of power. Nothing is as important as obeying our father’s wishes. I must spend fourteen years in forest so that our father’s soul will rest in peace.”

“I too do not have the slightest desire to get the throne. My wicked mother is responsible for all this. I beseech you to listen to me. Your return to Ayodhya will gladden everyone’s hearts.” Bharat too was adamant.

“My dear Bharat, duty is greater than emotion. Don’t ask me to come back. I am not going to change my mind.” Ram was steadfast.

Finally, Bharat realized that Ram would not relent. With a heavy heart he said: “Ram, at least do this for me. Let me have your paadukas (sandals). I shall place them on the throne and administer the kingdom on your behalf and that too only till your return after fourteen years and not a day more.”

“All right Bharat. So be it.” Shree Ram gave his consent. Bharat took Ram’s paadukas. With great devotion he placed them on his head and returned to Ayodhya. The divine

paadukas were kept on the throne of Ayodhya while Bharat ruled as Ram’s representative from Nandigram.

15. THETHREEMEET JATAYU

After spending a few days at Mount Chitrakoot, Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta proceeded further. They went through thick forests, heard the howling and roaring of wild animals and sighted many fearful huge serpents. Yet they were neither frightened nor distressed. They used to halt at some places for two or three days and then travel further towards the south. On their way they came across the ashram of Atri Rishi. They met Atri Rishi and his wife Anasuya. Both were very happy to see Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta. Sati Anasuya gave Seeta a unique dress, which would never soil. She also gave Vaidehi a garland, the flowers of which would never fade away. Sati Anasuya told Seeta that the garland would protect her from rakshasas. Atri Rishi gave his blessings for their well-being. When Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta proceeded further, a huge rakshas called Viradh came from behind and carried away Seeta forcibly. Seeta cried out for help. Ram looked behind but he saw neither Seeta nor Viradh. Viradh had fast disappeared with Seeta. Lakshman’s arrows cut off branches around him. Then Viradh was visible. Lakshman challenged Viradh who left Seeta and rushed towards Lakshman. He intended to devour him. Ram swiftly shot an arrow and cut off his head. Viradh died instantly. The people living in that forest were delighted at Viradh’s end. They thanked Shree Ram profusely. Later, Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta visited Rishi Sharbhang’s ashram. Rishi Sharbhang suffered from leprosy. He was happy to see Shree Ram. He welcomed and worshipped Shree Ram. Ram pierced the ground with his arrow and created a hot water pool and advised the rishi to bathe in it to get rid of the disease. Rishi Sharbhang bathed in it and got rid of the disease. His skin became clean and beautiful. Thus, during their journey, Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta wiped tears from the eyes of the distressed and ensured happiness for them by killing evil rakshashas. After crossing thick forest they came to Agastya Rishi’s ashram. The ashram and surroundings were beautiful. The trees in the garden were laden with fruits and flowers. A sweet smell filled the whole atmosphere. Pupils in the ashram were busy chanting the Vedas. They informed Agastya Rishi about Shree Ram’s arrival. He immediately came out to receive Shree Ram. Shree Ram and Lakshman touched the Rishi’s feet. Agastya’s wife Lopamudra embraced Seeta. They all stepped into the ashram. Agastya rishi gave Shree Ram and everlasting quiver, an unbreakable bow, armour and a unique arrow. Ram considered himself fortunate to receive Agastya Rishi’s blessings and invaluable weapons from him. Shri Ram, Lakshman and Seeta then headed towards Panchavati. On their way they saw a huge eagle. Shree Ram feared that this might be a Rakshas in the form of an eagle. Shree Ram loaded his bow with an arrow. But at that moment the bird spoke like a human, “Who are you? Why do you aim your bow at me without any reason?” “I am Ram, son of King Dasharath,” replied Ram. “Ram? Are you really Shree Ram? Oh, how fortunate I am! I am extremely happy to see you. Ram, I am Jatayu, son of Aruna. I had helped Maharaj Dasharath when he had fought Shambhar. Since then your father considered me as his brother.” Shree Ram gladly embraced Jatayu when he heard this. Upon Jatayu’s advice the three built a hut there at Panchavati. They liked that place very much.

16.SHOORPANAKHA ISTAUGHTA LESSON

Fearsome Rakshasas occupied the forest of Panchavati. Ram Lakshman and Seeta were informed about this fact by the rishis and munis of the Dandakaranya forest as they proceeded along their journey. Shoorpanakha, the sister of Ravan, the powerful Rakshasa emperor of Lanka lived in that forest. She was not alone. Khar, a cousin of Ravan, and Dooshan, his chief lieutenant along with an army of fourteen thousand Rakshasas also lived in that forest. They terrorized the rishis, muni’s and forest dwellers and committed atrocities on them. The Rakshasas had killed many rishis and innocent forest-dwellers. All were helpless against this terror. One day, Shoorpanakha, while wandering near Shree Ram’s Panchavati ashram, happened to see him from far. She was immediately attracted by his majestic personality and handsome appearance. In order to tempt Shree Ram, the Rakshasi decided to take on the form of a beautiful woman. She wanted Ram for herself. Accordingly, Shoorpanakha assumed the form of a beautiful damsel and approached Shree Ram. She addressed him in a very sweet voice: “Who are you, O handsome one? What are you doing alone in this forest full of wild animals and rakshasas?” Ram replied, “I am Ram, son of Maharaj Dasharath of Ayodhya. I have come to reside in the forest according to my father’s wishes. But do tell me who you are, noble lady.” Shree Ram’s words were like nectar. Shoorpanakha wanted to make a good impression on him. She said in a boastful tone: “I am Shoorpanakha, the sister of Ravan, the powerful king of Lanka. I live in this forest and am in control here. Ever since I set eyes on you, I have fallen in love with you. You must accept me as your life partner. You shall enjoy great happiness in your life.” Shree Ram was not deceived by her beautiful external form and immediately recognized that Shoorpanakha was a dangerous Rakshasi. But since she was also a woman, he decided to deal with her tactfully. Accordingly, he said: “Blessed lady, I am already a married man and therefore cannot accept you as my wife. But my younger brother is with me. He is more handsome than me and alone too. He will surely be the right match for you.” Shoorpanakha then approached Lakshman who knew his elder brother’s intentions perfectly well. With a smile, he told Shoorpanakha, “O lady! You are a princess from a royal family whereas I have come to the forest to humbly serve my elder brother and sister-in-law. If you marry me, you too fall into the lowly status of a servant. Therefore approach Shree Ram alone. I am sure you will be able to change his mind.” Shoorpanakha had already become irritated. At that moment, she happened to catch a glimpse of Seeta, who after plucking flowers came and stood by Ram’s side. Upon seeing the divine and pure beauty of Vaidehi, the Rakshasi burned with jealousy and anger. She understood at once that Shree Ram would never think of any other woman excepting Seeta. “I shall eat this puny woman in an instant. Then there will be no obstacle between us,” shrieked Shoorpanakha and rushed towards Seeta, who was struck by horror. Fortunately, Shree Ram immediately sensed her evil intentions and hid Seeta behind him. Lakshman reacted like lightning. He drew his sword, caught hold of Shoorpanakha and cut off her ears and nose. Mad with rage and bleeding profusely, the Rakshasi ran deep into the Dandak forest, yelling “Khar! Trishiras! Dooshan! Where are you all? Kill these puny human beings at once! They have dared to insult the sister of the mighty Ravan!” The bleeding Shoorpanakha reached the Rakshasa stronghold of Khar, Ravan’s cousin. Khar was the unquestioned master of Dandakaranya. When Shoorpanakha arrived in her wounded condition and told him what had happened, he rage knew no bounds. He ordered his army, “Let us go at once to kill those two little human beings. We shall also bring that woman.” Very soon, Khar, Dooshan and their huge army of fourteen thousand Rakshasas, armed with some of the most dangerous weapons set out to kill Ram and Lakshman. Shree Ram had anticipated this. He ordered Lakshman to take Seeta to a cave situated in the mountain behind their ashram, saying, “Although you are single-handedly capable of destroying these Rakshasas, you should guard Seeta while I deal with these bandits myself.” Lakshman obeyed his brother’s commands and escorted Seeta to safety. Very soon, the huge Rakshas army of Khar arrived and surrounded the Panchavati ashram. The rakshas force raised a huge cloud of dust and their roar was fearsome as they attacked Shree Ram. But he was not disturbed even a bit. He had put on armour and was ready with his mighty bow. A ferocious battle now ensued. Khar and his men soon realized that Ram was no ordinary opponent. An incessant rain of arrows poured from the Kodand (Ram’s bow). Very soon, the Rakshas army was scattered like dry leaves before a strong wind. The place was littered with heads and limbs of the attacking Rakshasas, many of whom did not even know what hit them as they collapsed and laid down their lives one after another. Shree Ram used divine astras and shastras

taught by the great rishis Vashisht, Vishwamitra and Agastya. Dooshan and Trishiras, who were feared Rakshas warriors, were soon slain by the deadly missiles that blazed out of Shree Ramachandra’s bow that thundered like clouds in a storm. Finally, Khar was the sole man left standing. When he saw his army totally destroyed, he was mad with rage and yelled: “Son of Dasharath! Don’t think yourself too brave just because you have killed a few ordinary Rakshasas. Fight with me if you imagine yourself all that strong. I am Khar, brother of Ravan. I shall send you to your doom and avenge my companions.”“Shree Ram replied in a calm but stern voice, “Your terror in the Dandak forest is over, evil Rakshas. You all have killed innocent rishis, munis and forest-dwellers. You shall now receive just punishment for your atrocities.” Khar and Shree Ram then fought a fierce duel, showering arrows on each other. The Rakshas rushed forward, but it was too late. Ram dispatched an arrow that ended the life of the terrible Khar. The Rakshas terror in Dandakaranya was now over. The gods were extremely happy and relieved at Shree Ram’s victory and showered flowers on him. The rishis and the sages were overjoyed. Shree Ram had rid them of the constant threat of the evil Rakshasas. The inhabitants of Dandakaranya could now live and breathe freely. When Shoorpanakha saw the total destruction of the Rakshas army, she was shocked beyond belief. She realized that facing Ram and Lakshman in open warfare was impossible. The reign of the Rakshasas in Janasthan-Panchavati had come to an end. Shoorpanakha fled to Lanka and narrated the story of the destruction of Khar and the Rakshas army, and also provoked Ravan to take revenge. She also twisted her story, saying, “When I saw the beautiful Seeta, I thought of capturing her for you. But look at what those two humans Ram and Lakshman did to me. Not only have they cut off my ears and nose, but they have also slain Khar and our entire army. Mere junglee humans have wiped out our base at Janasthan. And what are you, my powerful brother, the conqueror of the three worlds doing here, sitting in Lanka? Shame upon you!” Shoorpanakha’s mocking words did provoke Ravan. The news of Khar’s death and the destruction of his army at Janasthan-Panchavati was indeed shocking news. The Lord of Lanka roared, “I shall go to Janasthan at once and crush those puny human beings in no time.” But Ravan’s minister and commander Akampan, who had somehow escaped death at Panchavati, warned the Rakshas king not to be hasty. Akampan pleaded, “Listen to me O Lord of the Rakshasas. Do not risk you life by facing Shree Ram in open battle. No one can match him in war. Instead, abduct his beloved wife Seeta. Her beauty has no parallel in the three worlds. Ram loves her more than his life. Deprived of Seeta, Ram will not be able to bear the grief. Then it will be easy to deal with him.” Akampan’s evil advice appealed to Ravan. He told Shoorpanakha, “Be assured, dear sister. I shall soon deal with Ram.” So saying Ravan left for Panchavati to implement his evil plan.

17.THE ABDUCTION OF SEETA

Ravan went to meet Mareech, his uncle who lived in the southern part of Bharat. Ravan wanted Mareech’s help because Mareech was a sorcerer. He could take any form including that of human beings, animals or birds as desired. So Ravan went to Mareech and asked his help in abducting Seeta. Mareech was shocked when he heard of the plan of the Lord of Lanka. He said: “Ravan, desist from this evil plan. If you earn the enmity of Shree Ram, you along with your beautiful Lanka will soon cease to exist. Shree Ram’s power is limitless. Ask me. I somehow escaped death at his hands years ago.”

Ravan was furious at Mareech’s advice. He thundered: “Listen Mareech! If I needed any advice from you, I would have asked for it. I have come to tell

you what you are going to do, as per my command. You will take an illusory form of a golden deer and wander around Ram’s ashram. Seeta will certainly be attracted to such a beautiful deer and she would ask Ram to catch and bring it for her. Ram will then pursue you. Run so fast as to draw him far away from his ashram. Meanwhile, I shall approach their ashram in the form of a mendicant. After drawing Ram sufficiently far away, cry out in a human voice: “Lakshman! Help!! Help!!! I am in great trouble. Help!”

“On hearing these words Seeta in her fright will order Lakshman to go to his brother’s help. Then I shall have no difficulty in carrying out my plan. I shall surely kidnap Seeta. If you refuse, be sure that I shall kill you right now.” Ravan was not joking.

Mareech was trapped with no escape. He told Ravan, “It seems I have no choice. I consider myself fortunate that I shall perish at the hands of Shree Ram, but O Lord of Lanka! Be certain that you too shall not escape. It looks as if your end is near. Hence you reject my words of good counsel.”

Everything happened as Ravan had planned. While Mareech was lingering near the ashram in the form of a golden deer, Seeta was attracted towards it. She had never seen such beautiful deer’s skin before. She requested Shree Ram to bring the deer either dead or alive.

But Lakshman cautioned them saying that the beautiful deer was in fact a trick of illusion by the Rakshasas who were out to take revenge for their defeat at Shree Ram’s hands. Seeta however pleaded with Ram to somehow bring the deer for her.

Shree Ram picked up his bow and quiver to fulfil Seeta’s wish and said to Lakshman “Guard Seeta carefully till I return. Even if this golden deer is actually a Rakshas in disguise, I shall finish him off so that he may not create further trouble.”

The golden deer was as swift as the wind. Shree Ram had to really run fast in order to catch it. Mareech in the form of the deer drew Ram farther and farther away from his ashram. At last Ram decided to end the chase, as he was tired of the endless pursuit, and took out an arrow and fixed it on the bow. Mareech too knew that his end was near. As Shree Ram’s arrow pierced his heart, he cried out imitating his voice, “Alas! Lakshman! Seeta! Help me!” Then the Rakshas breathed his last.

Seeta heard this cry for help and immediately ordered Lakshman, “Your brother is in trouble. Proceed immediately to his rescue.” Lakshman, who already had serious doubts in his mind, said, “It is impossible that Shree Ram would be in any trouble and cry for help. This certainly is a trick played by evil Rakshasas.”

Seeta was furious at this reply of Lakshman. She asked sharply; “Don’t you love your brother? Is it because you are his stepbrother? You would not feel sorry if some evil befalls Shree Ram. Perhaps you have some evil intent in your mind towards me.” Lakshman was shocked. He said: “Please, don’t use such cruel and harsh words. Here do I go to help Shree Ram. But remember one thing, even now my inner voice tells me that this is some cruel trick played by the Rakshasas. For your protection, I am drawing this line across the doorstep of our ashram. You shall be safe as long as you are inside the line. Do not cross it, else you may be exposed to danger. May the gods protect you.” So saying, Lakshman

left with a heavy heart.Ravan waiting for this very opportunity came out from

his hiding place when Lakshman left. He was in the form of a mendicant, making a show of begging for food. Seeta came out to offer him food.

The Rakshas king struck a conversation with her. He asked Seeta, “My mind is full of doubts on seeing a beautiful woman like you in this forest. Do tell me who you are, O beautiful lady, and what you are doing all alone in this dangerous forest?”

Seeta replied politely, “I am Seeta, daughter of Maharaj Janak of Mithila and wife of Shree Ram, son of Maharaj Dasharath of Ayodhya. My husband resides in this forest with his brother Lakshman and myself in order to uphold his father’s wishes. But do tell me who you are, O holy one.”

The next instant, the visitor revealed his true form. It was no sage, but the Rakshas King of Lanka who stood before Seeta. Ravan said to her in a sweet voice, “O Maithili! Come with me to Lanka to be my consort. You are meant to live in comfort and luxury, not wander in these forests.”

Although horrified, Seeta retorted courageously, “Get lost, evil Rakshas. My Lord Ram shall destroy you in no time.”

But Ravan grabbed her, placed her on his chariot and made off, gleefully declaring, “I have kidnapped you, Vaidehi. Ram cannot save you now.” Seeta’s panic knew no bounds. She cried out loudly, “Help! Save me! O Lord! Oh brave Lakshman! Where are you? Save me from this evil monster!”

The noble Jatayu heard her cries. He stopped Ravan mid-air and challenged him to fight. In the fierce combat that ensued, Dasharath’s old friend broke Ravan’s bow and crown, slew his charioteer, killed his horses and smashed his chariot

to pieces. With his powerful claws, Jatayu badly wounded Ravan all over his body. Fighting the greatest battle of his life, the noble eagle tried his best to rescue Janaki from Ravan. But alas! Age was not on Jatayu’s side. Ravan’s powerful sword cut off both his wings and feet, and the great Jatayu fell to the ground crying “Hey Ram! Hey Ram!”

Deprived of his chariot, Ravan caught hold of Seeta and rose in the air. He went southward towards Lanka. On the way, Seeta saw a large group of people on the mountain ranges. Immediately she tore off a piece of her

saree, wrapped her ornaments in it and threw them below. The people on the mountains picked up the bundle. They also saw a Rakshas, flying high in the air and carrying a beautiful, weeping woman. They noticed that the Rakshas was going southwards. They gathered and preserved the ornaments thrown by Seeta.

Upon reaching Lanka, Ravan tried to win Seeta’s heart by exhibiting his immense wealth. She not only ignored his wealth but also accused him in harsh words for abducting her like a coward. Ravan thought that after some days she would cool down and be affectionate towards him. So he sent her to the Ashok Van and kept her there under the constant watch of terrifying Rakshasis.

18.THESEARCHFORSEETA

Shree Ram was highly upset and was almost driven out of senses when he saw the ashram deserted. His frantic search for his beloved turned out to be futile. Shree Ram asked everyone including trees and creepers the whereabouts of Seeta. He was shocked at her disappearance. Although Lakshman was there to guard Seeta, she was abducted. Temptation is a root cause of calamities. If only Seeta had not been tempted to by that golden deer, then… But such thoughts were useless at the moment. In order to face the calamity bravely he tried to control himself. Both brothers continued their search for Seeta. On the way, they saw the wounded Jatayu. Ramchandra was shocked and asked, “O noble Jatayu! Who is responsible for this condition of yours?” Jatayu had only a few moments of life left in him. He replied: “I intercepted

Ravan when he was fleeing with Seeta, I tried my best to rescue Seeta. But alas! That evil Rakshas Ravan cut off my wings and left me mortally wounded. Though I tried my best I was defeated and that wicked Rakshas flew away with Seeta.”“Ram, I was waiting for you. I have only one last wish. Let me rest my head on your lap so that I shall have a peaceful death.” As per his wish, Ram let him rest his head on his lap and then noble Jatayu breathed his last. With great sorrow Ram and Lakshman duly performed his last rites. As they proceeded further on their journey, a terrible Rakshas called Kabandh blocked their way. He had a huge body and a very fearful face. With his long and strong hands, which were almost like tree-trunks, he grabbed Ram and Lakshman to devour them. Though Shree Ram and Lakshman were in deep sorrow, they were quite alert. In a flash, they cut off both hands of Kabandh. The next instant, a handsome man with luminous face and strong body appeared before them. He was originally a Gandharva. He said to Shree Ram: “O Shree Ram! You are my redeemer. I am very grateful to you. I have a humble suggestion to help you in your quest. Proceed towards Pampa Lake, which is in the south, close to the Vanar kingdom of Kishkindha. There you will meet a noble Vanar called Sugreev. Your mutual friendship with him will be of valuable help to both of you.” Kabandh then went heavenwards. Shree Ram and Lakshman reached the Pampa Lake. The place was very beautiful. They rested there for some time and satisfied their hunger with fruits. There ashram of Rishi Matang was near the lake. No sooner did Shree Ram and Lakshman head towards the ashram than Shabari, a Bhil devotee lady, came out. She fell at Ram’s feet. Her joy knew no bounds. She took them into her hut. Shabari offered berries to Shree Ram. To be sure that each one was sweet she first tasted them herself and then offered them to Shree Ram. It was done with the noble desire to offer only sweet fruits to Ram. He acknowledged her devotion to him and extremely moved, Ram ate those Shabari tasted fruits with great relish. Later Shree Ram and Lakshman proceeded towards Rishyamook Mountain. Sugreev stayed there out of fear for his brother, Vaali. Vaali was bent upon killing Sugreev. He had abducted Sugreev’s wife Ruma and held her captive. In the past Matang rishi had cursed Vaali that if he set foot upon Rishyamook he would die. Vaali could not step on that mountain for this reason. Therefore, to save himself from Vaali, Sugreev had take shelter on this mountain, as it was the only safe place. Shree Ram and Lakshman began climbing up the mountain. Sugreev feared that they might be his enemies in an illusory human form. To find out their identity he sent Hanuman disguised as a Brahmin. As Shree Ram and Lakshman came nearer Hanuman saluted them and asked very modestly, “Who are you, noble

beings? Where are you going? You look like mighty warriors.” Lakshman answered, “We are king Dasharath’s sons. This is my elder brother Shree Ram. It was our stepmother who banished us to the forest. During our stay at Panchavati, the evil Rakshas Ravan abducted my sister-in-law, Seeta. We have vowed to free her from his clutches. We are told that Sugreev might help us in the mission. Therefore, we wish to meet and be friends with him.” Hanuman was overjoyed on hearing this. He revealed his true identity and said, “I am Hanuman, a humble servant of Sugreev. I deliberately took an illusory form of a Brahmin to find out if our enemy sent you. Please come with me. I shall take you to Sugreev.” The mighty Hanuman then placed both the Raghu brothers on his huge shoulders and took them to the place where Sugreev was resid

19. FRIENDSHIP WITH SUGREEV AND VAALI’S DEATH

Shree Ram and Lakshman met Sugreev. Sugreev and Shree Ram lit a sacred fire and pledged total friendship to each other. Both also narrated their own sorrows and difficulties. Shree Ram said, “Dear Sugreev, I need help from you as

well as your army of Vanars to rescue Seeta from Ravan’s clutches.”

“Ram, I am ever ready to help you. But I am terribly afraid of my brother Vaali, Only if you are able to slay him, it will be possible for me to help you. Vaali’s physical might is awesome. Indra, the king of gods had given Vali a Vijaymala (a victorious garland). Vaali is unconquerable.

He has imprisoned my wife too. “But how did all this happen?” asked Ram. Sugreev narrated the whole story. “In the past,

the Rakshas Dundubhi’s son Mayavi attacked Vaali. But Vaali’s counter-attck was too powerful; Mayavi vomited blood profusely and ran away from the battleground in fear and entered a cave. Vaali pursued him. I was made to stand guard at the cave’s entrance.”

“Nearly a year passed but Vaali did not come out. Fearing that my brother must have been killed,

I returned to Kishkindha. Since the throne could not remain empty, the ministers asked me to be the King of Kishkindha.”

“After some days Vali came with Mayavi’s bleeding head in his hands. When he saw me on the throne he was furious and wanted to kill me. I somehow escaped from Kishkindha with the help of Nala, Neel, Jambavan and Hanuman. Vaali has

kept my wife Ruma in his custody. O Ram! Vaali has defeated even Ravan and is extremely powerful. I feel helpless before him.”

“Don’t be afraid, Sugreev. I can understand your sorrow. First, we will slay Vali and rescue your wife. Only then will we begin our search for Seeta. Now you must challenge Vaali for fight,” Ram assured Sugreev.

“But Ram, it is not so easy to fight with Vaali. Look at Dundubhi’s huge skeleton lying here. If you are able to hurl it to the foot of the mountain with a single kick or if you can cut off these huge palm trees with a single arrow, I can be assured of your strength. That will give me confidence to fight with Vaali.”

A mere tap of Shree Ram’s toe sent Dundubhi’s skeleton flying several yards away. Then he cut off not only one but seven palm trees with a single arrow.

Sugreev was overjoyed. He showed Shree Ram the ornaments thrown by Seeta. Shree Ram asked Kashman to identify them.

Lakshman, however, recognized only the ornaments worn by Seeta on her feet, because he always looked at her feet. He never looked up at her. Shree Ram was also convinced that Ravan had abducted Seeta.

“Sugreev, now challenge Vaali for a duel” suggested Ram. Sugreev agreed and all of them went to Kishkindha. Sugreev challenged Vaali for a fight.

The furious combat began. Sugreev was non-plussed against Vaali’s awesome power. He was waiting for Shree Ram to act. But Shree Ram did not shoot arrows at all. Vaali had little trouble in soundly thrashing Sugreev, forcing him to run from the battlefield. Sugreev was extremely angry with Ram because he believed that Ram had failed to keep his promise.

When he asked Shree Ram to explain his behaviour, the latter said, “Sugreev, you misunderstand me. There is a very strong reason for not using my bow.”

“What is that?” asked the agitated Sugreev.

Page 41: Katharoop Ramayan

“Both of you look so alike from a distance that I got baffled, not knowing who should I aim at. Suppose if I had dispatched an arrow without being sure and unfortunately if you had been killed then how terrible it would have been. We would have achieved nothing, but I would have been blamed for such a tragedy. Hence forget your defeat and try again. Challenge Vaali again. This time we will take a precaution. You should wear a thick garland of fresh flowers and creepers, so that I would be able to recognize you even from a distance. Be sure of Vaali’s end this time.”

Again, Sugreev and Vaali were locked in combat. Both of them wrestled for a long time. Ram watched the fight carefully from a distance. All of a sudden Vaali dealt such a severe blow to Sugreev that the latter almost collapsed.

Shree Ram thought it to be the right moment to intercept the fight. He shot an arrow that pierced Vaali’s heart and Vaali fell to the ground. Shree Ram went near the wounded Vaali.

Vaali was very much surprised to see Ram. He asked in an accusing tone: “O Ram, why have you committed this shameful act of killing me though I have no enmity towards you? This is going to be a blot on your character.”

Shree Ram replied, “I have done the right thing. You are guilty of committing two sins. Firstly, you imprisoned Sugreev’s wife with ill intent and secondly you were bent upon killing your younger brother Sugreev though he was innocent. For a culprit like you, death is the right punishment.”

“Ramchandra, you have opened my eyes. I repent for my cruel deeds. Enthrone Sugreev and take care of him. I am happy that in the end at least I am fortunate enough to die at the hands of Shree Ram. Dear Sugreev, help Shree Ram in every possible way to rescue Seeta. And do take care of my son Angad.”

So saying Vaali breathed his last. He chanted ‘Shree Ram, Shree Ram’ till his last moment.

Lessons to remember: The wickedwho torture the innocent deserve punishment.

Sugreev was crowned the new King of Kishkindha. He not only retrieved his wife, but Vaali’s wife Tara too, who married him according to Shree Ram’s advice. After becoming king, Sugreev expressed sincere gratitude to Shree Ram. Ram said, “Sugreev, you may enjoy life for a few months as this is the rainy season. Any operation or campaign must therefore wait. Think of helping us after that only. Till then we will not stay in your kingdom Kishkindha but on the Rishyamook Mountains.” Sugreev agreed to this. Six months passed. Sugreev lost himself so much in all enjoyments that he totally forgot his promise of helping Ram. After six months Ram said to Lakshman, “Sugreev has forgotten us. It is generally true that a benefactor who helps others in the time of difficulty is forgotten when the difficulty is over. Sugreev too, has totally forgotten the help we have rendered him. He is too busy in enjoying himself.” “Yes, dear brother, I too am angry with him. I shall go to him right now and ask for an explanation.” So saying Lakshman marched towards Sugreev’s capital with his bow and arrows. Hanuman in the meantime wanted to caution Sugreev. He went to the palace before Lakshman arrived. “O King! Have you forgotten your promise? Don’t you remember your words? You had promised to help Shree Ram. But I see you are busy enjoying all palatial comforts and luxuries. Ram and Lakshman both are very angry with you. Lakshman is coming here with an intention to punish you. Act wisely, and offer you apology.” Sugreev was frightened when he learnt that Lakshman was coming with a desire to punish him. He called his wife Tara and requested her to pacify Lakshman’s anger. Tara was a wise lady. She told Lakshman that Sugreev was making preparations to send out army of Vanars to search for Seeta. On hearing this Lakshman’s anger subsided. King Sugreev then sent his huge army in all four directions. Hanuman, Angad, Neel and Jambavan were the important members of the division that was headed for the south. Hanuman expressed a doubt. How could he convince Seeta that he was Shree Ram’s messenger even if he was able to meet her? He therefore needed proof to convince her. Shree Ram immediately removed his ring and handed it to Hanuman and said, “If you show this ring to Seeta, she will believe you. Dear Hanuman, I have full faith in you.” Hanuman took the ring and embarked on the great journey. All other Vanars of Sugreev’s army had dispersed in various directions. Sugreev had instructed all of them to carry out an extensive search and find the whereabouts of Seeta within one month. Prince Angad had got exhausted after crossing various rivers, hills and mountains. But there was no trace of Seeta. The one-month’s time allotted to them was coming to an end. Angad was at his wits’ end not knowing what to do. He feared that Sugreev would pass the death sentence on him if he failed in his mission. He and his army of Vanars therefore thought of committing suicide rather than report their failure to Sugreev. While wandering, they reached the seashore. They could not decide where to from here. Angad once again voiced his desire to end his life. No sooner had he expressed the desire than an eagle in a mountain cave cried in human voice. “Very good, very good. I will have no problem in finding for many more days. I have ready food.” Angad turned back to see who uttered these words. It was an eagle in a mountain cave. The Vanars wondered aloud, “Is this Jatayu. No it cannot be him. Jatayu was a noble bird who sacrificed his life for Seeta. This wicked bird is waiting for our death to feed upon our flesh.” The eagle responded in a shocked voice: “What? What did you say? How do you know Jatayu?? He is my brother. I am Sampati, Jatayu’s elder brother. Once in the past, we leaped towards the Sun. As a result, my wings got burnt while shielding Jatayu. I became handicapped since then. But do tell me of my brother Jatayu” Angad replied: O elderly one. Jatayu saw Ravan carrying Seeta forcibly. He fought Ravan bravely to rescue Seeta but perished in the attempt. He sacrificed his life to rescue Seeta. We all have set out to find the whereabouts of Seeta.” “Oh no! Did Ravan kill my Jatayu? Ravan must meet his punishment,” said Sampati, grieving for his late brother. “But none of us know where Ravan is,” said Angad. “I will tell you,” said Sampati. “I also had seen a Rakshas carrying a beautiful woman. She must be have been Seeta. You will reach Lanka if you cross this ocean. Ravan stays in Lanka. Seeta must be there. My dear friends, please carry me to the seashore. I will pay my oblations to my brother.” The Vanars carried Sampati to the seashore. He performed formal rites for his brother Jatayu with great devotion and love. Then a miracle happened. Sampati’s burnt wings grew and became normal. Sampati had grown new wings. He was delighted and said, “You will surely succeed in finding out Seeta.” Sampati took to the air and flew away. Now the Vanar army came to know Seeta’s whereabouts. But crossing the ocean was the greatest hurdle. They

spent entire night in discussing this problem. Ultimately they came to the conclusion that only Hanuman was capable of crossing the ocean. He alone was capable of making this difficult journey. The venerable Jambavan requested Hanuman to undertake this great mission of crossing the ocean and going to Lanka to find out Seeta’s whereabouts.

Lessons to remember: All help virtuous people. Never forget your benefactor even after your work is over.

21.HANUMAN’SFLIGHTTOWARDSLANKA

Hanuman prepared to cross the ocean and fly towards Lanka. To take off, he climbed to the summit of the Mahendra Mountain. He rose into the air chanting ‘Shree Ram’.

Hanuman conquered all obstacles in the way. The sea-Rakshasi Surasa tried to stop him but Hanuman entered her mouth and came out safely. A huge Rakshasi called Simhika approached him with mouth wide open to swallow him, but Hanuman tore her apart.

After hours of flying in the air, he saw the shores of Lanka. Hanuman then reduced the size of his body. The Rakshasas would easily spot his huge size. If that happened, he would be surrounded and his visit to Lanka would be futile. Hanuman therefore reduced himself to the size

of a tiny Vanar. Several Rakshasas stood guard at the gates. But Hanuman managed to enter into the city completely unseen. A huge Rakshasi saw him and shouted angrily, “Hey, you Vanar! How come you enter the city? Off with you or

else I will kill you.” “Who are you to threaten me like this?” asked Hanuman. “I am the Lankini, the guardian deity of Lanka,” she said in a threatening voice. “I am an ordinary person. I have come here only to see thebeautiful and rich Lanka.” Hanuman replied coolly. “But how dare you enter the city without obtaining my permission. I will teach you a lesson for that.” So saying

she lifted her hand to hit him. But Hanuman slapped her so severely that she collapsed in no time. “This ordinary looking Vanar is a powerful being. Ravan’s end is in sight now. Brahma had told me in the past that

the day an ordinary looking Vanar knocks you down, then be sure that Ravan’s death is at hand,” thought the Rakshasi. She then disappeared.

Hanuman now had no obstacle in his way. He wandered everywhere, looking at the gardens, temples and mansions.

He had created an imaginary picture of Seeta. But he did not come across a single woman who would resemble that. While wandering, when he came to Indrajit’s chamber he saw a very beautiful lady reclining on the bed and talking with Indrajit. He thought that this most beautiful lady must be Seeta.

He was very much shocked to find that Seeta whom he believed to be chaste and virtuous was enjoying privacy with Ravan’s son. He even decided to commit suicide rather than tell this shameful thing to Shree Ram. When his mind was filled with such depressing thoughts, he overheard the conversation between them.

Sulochana said to Indrajit, “I am very much surprised at one thing.” “What is that?” “Your father is guilty of a very foul deed.” “What do you mean?” “He has abducted the most virtuous lady Seeta out of lust for her and has kept her under guard. What a shameful

thing it is!” No sooner did Hanuman hear the conversation, than he felt ashamed of doubts he had about Seeta’s character. Hanuman again set out to search Seeta. He visited Kumbhakarna’s chamber too. Kumbhakarna was fast asleep.

He reduced himself to a very small size, and went along every road, searched every house. Not finding Seeta even after searching the whole of Lanka, Hanuman was very worried. He was now caught up in

a whirlwind of bitter thoughts. “Is Seeta alive? Or has she committed suicide? What is the outcome of my mission? What would be Shree Ram’s reaction?”

Page 46: Katharoop Ramayan

Hanuman had lost all hopes. At night he began his search again in the dim light of moon. In the deep interior of Lanka, he saw a big garden, hidden from public view.

Entering the garden, Hanuman found a beautiful woman under an Ashok tree. She was chanting ‘Ram, Ram’ continuously. But the beautiful lady was not alone. Some seven to eight Rakshasis were keeping watch on her. Hanuman immediately knew that the beautiful lady who was held as captive and who was chanting ‘Ram, Ram’ with great devotion could be none other than Seeta. She very much resembled the description of Seeta by Shree Ram.

Hanuman delight knew no bounds. He had found Seeta at last! But there was a problem. How to meet Seeta? The Rakshasis kept a constant watch. He therefore climbed the tree under which Seeta sat and waited.

At dawn, the Rakshasis who kept constant vigil then relaxed and went away. After a while, when all were asleep, Hanuman slowly descended from the tree.

“I bow to you, mother.” Seeta was startled when she heard these words. She looked up to see Hanuman. “Who are you? How did you

come here? “Don’t be afraid mother. I am Hanuman, a humble servant of Shree Ram. I have crossed the ocean upon Shree

Ram’s instructions in search of you. I am delighted to see you. I am supremely satisfied that I have been successful in finding you out.

Seeta then asked, “Are you really Shree Ram’s messenger or Ravan’s spy in an illusory form?” “Please do not doubt me mother. See what I have brought from Shree Ram to convince you.” Hanuman showed

her the ring given by Shree Ram. Now Seeta was convinced that this Vanar was indeed Shree Ram’s messenger. She said with tears of joy in her eyes, “Hanuman my child, may you be immortal. You have given me a fresh life. How are Shree Ram and Lakshman? Are they all right? Where are they? When shall my Lord come to destroy Ravan and his evil gang and rescue me?” Seeta was overwhelmed with both joy and sorrow.

“Shree Ram is sorrowful in your absence. He has made friends with Vanar King Sugreev of Kishkindha. We shall soon cross the ocean and slay Ravan,” said Hanuman and told her of all the events.

“Please take this ornament of mine to show Shree Ram and give my message to him. He should kill Ravan who has abducted me. Only after killing Ravan, should Shree Ram escort me away from here. Till then I will be able to look after myself. But I have only two months left.”

Rest assured mother,” said Hanuman and returned back.

Lesson to remember: Be ready to face countless hazards whiledoing your duty.

22.THEBURNINGOFLANKA

Hanuman thought of teaching a severe lesson to Ravan before leaving Lanka.

He began uprooting the trees, destroying the gardens. He created havoc. All the Rakshas guards were panic stricken.

Hanuman also began attacking them with his tail. He frightened the people by howling and roaring at

them. He climbed up on the houses and smashed the ceilings. He entered the houses and hurled out on the road their belongings such as ornaments, clothes, valuables etc. He also drove away the horses and smashed chariots. All inhabitants of Lanka were frightened. All were stunned to find that a huge Vanar was creating such havoc. They rushed to Ravan to complain about the fearsome intruder.

Ravan was also surprised to hear that an unknown Vanar had created so much trouble. He sent the chief of the Rakshas army Jambumali to kill him. But Hanuman hurled a huge boulder at them and crushed Jambumali and his soldiers under it.

Very soon, many great Rakshas warriors died trying to capture Hanuman. Ravan’s younger son Aksh was among those who went to capture Hanuman.

Hanuman buffeted some with fists, kicked others and hurled many Rakshasas to their doom. Viroopaksh and Ravan’s younger son Aksh were among those who met their death at Hanuman’s hands. Ravan finally had to send his invincible son Indrajit.

Inderjit’s real name was Meghnad. But he was known as Indrajit ever since he defeated Indra, king of the Devas. Indrajit showered arrows on Hanuman. But Hanuman simply blew them away. Indrajit realized that ordinary weapons could not defeat Hanuman. He dispatched the Brahmastra at Hanuman. Hanuman was bound by the supreme astra. The

Rakshasas shouted in joy and raised slogans of victory. Hanuman was enchained and brought before Ravan. Ravan asked him in a threatening tone “Vanar, who are you?

Why have you created such chaos in Lanka? Are you a spy? Has some enemy sent you?” Hanuman replied with calm confidence, “O great King of Rakshasas! I am no spy. I have come here as an ambassador

of the great valorous Shree Ram of the Ikshvaku Dynasty.” Ravan was furious. He said, “Your deeds are not those of a messenger. You have slain many of my men.” “I had to wage battle because I was attacked by your soldiers. Listen to me, O great ruler of Lanka. You have

abducted Devi Seeta, consort of my Lord Ram in a cunning and treacherous way. This act of yours is cruel, sinful and against Dharma. It is a blot on your character and greatness.”

“I have brought Shree Ram’s message for you. Send back Seeta to him with due respect. Shree Ram who is virtuous and noble will kindly forgive you. Behave wisely. Don’t plunge yourself and the Rakshas race in misery and doom by your vile deeds.”

Ravan thundered, “Vile Vanar. If you have come as an ambassador you are not supposed to give me a sermon. You have insulted me by your silly prattling. I am not in the least afraid of Ram. You deserve to be slain for what you have done in Lanka.”

Ravan then ordered his soldiers to put Hanuman to death. At that moment, Ravan’s younger brother Vibheeshan intervened saying “Wait, O Lord, don’ his master, not against

him. Do not blot your prestige by killing a messenger.” “All right. But this rascal will not go unpunished. Wrap clothes around his tail, pour oil on it and set it on fire. Let

him know what happens to one who challenges Ravan.”

Page 49: Katharoop Ramayan

Rakshas soldiers caught hold of Hanuman from all sides. Some of them began wrapping bundles of cloth around his tail. They went on wrapping the cloth for a long time, yet the tip of his tail always remained uncovered. It so happened because Hanuman kept on increasing the length and size of his tail.

All were in a fix. At last they decided that whatever clothes they tied around his tail were enough. Then they poured oil on it and set it on fire. The Rakshasas took him around Lanka. This gave the son of Vaayu to minutely observe Lanka’s fortifications and defences.

Hanuman then fearlessly glanced at his burning tail. Then he held it near the faces of some who stood close to him. Then the mighty messenger of Shree Ram decided to deliver his strongest warning to the Rakshasas.

Hanuman began jumping from one house to another setting them on fire. He reduced beautiful Lanka to ashes. Ravan’s pride took a big blow.

It was time to return to Shree Ram. Hanuman dipped his tail in sea and extinguished the flames. Then he leapt high up in the air and flew towards Shree Ram to report to him the good news.

Lesson to remember: Sinners deserve punishment.

23.HANUMANRETURNS

The Vanar army on the seashore was waiting anxiously for Hanuman. Due to anxiety and tension they felt that the day was as long as a year. Every one kept glancing in the direction Hanuman had taken. The next day the Vanars saw a small dot in the sky, which grew bigger as it moved towards them. They realized that it must be Hanuman and exclaimed, “Hanuman has returned much earlier than expected. He must have been successful in his mission.” “Yes, you are right. He must be successful, otherwise he would not have returned back at all,” said some one. Hanuman gradually alighted and landed on the shore. The Vanars led by Angad and Jambavan surrounded their triumphant hero and roared in a victorious mood. Hanuman had accomplished the impossible. Questions were flying at him non-stop. “Did you see Seeta? “How is she?” “Did you encounter Ravan?” The mighty son of Vaayu replied “Yes my brothers, I have been blessed to get a darshan of Seeta Devi, Shree Ram’s consort. She is alive and safe, but a prisoner of the evil Ravan. The Rakshas king has given her a year’s time to surrender to his wishes or die. Now only two months remain. I have spoken to Seeta and assured her that Shree Ram and our Vanar army will soon reach Lanka, put an end to Ravan and rescue her. Therefore, let us reach Kishkindha without delay.” Prince Angad however had other ideas. He declared : “O Hanuman, now that you have found out where Ravan has hidden Seeta, it would not look good for us to return empty-handed. We Vanars can easily cross the ocean, destroy Ravan and his evil Rakshasas and take Seeta to Shree Ram. Let us therefore set out immediately.” The Vanar army also roared in approval. But Jambavan the wise objected, saying, “Angad, my son, I have no doubt about the might of our Vanar

army. But we are Shree Ram’s messengers and must not exceed our limits until further orders. It is our duty to report back to Maharaj Sugreev and Shree Ram immediately.”

H a n u m a n t o o a g r e e d w i t h J a m a b a v a n a n d s a i d , ” S e e t a a l s o w i s h e s t h a t Shree Ram must s l a y R a v a n a n d rescue her. Therefore let us act according to h is command.” The Vanar army soon reached Kishkindha and entered the royal garden, feasting on fruits and honey. They also drove away the palace guards. The angry guards reported this to Sugreev who at once understood the reason for the returning army’s joy.

“Ram, it looks as if Angad’s search party has completed its mission successfully. Otherwise they would not be so happy,” said Sugreev. Ram and Lakshman were thrilled. Soon Angad, Jamabavan and Hanuman and the rest of the Vanar search party came to meet them. Hanuman touched Shree Ram’s feet and said “My Lord! With your blessings, I crossed the ocean and could meet Mother Janaki. She is safe but under threat from Ravan. She keeps thinking about you and wishes that you should slay Ravan and rescue her.” Hanuman then told Ram about his journey to Lanka, his meeting with Seeta and later with Ravan and all other details. He also gave Seeta’s Choodamani to Shree Ram.

Shree Ram’s eyes filled with tears. He said, “O mighty son of Vaayu. You have done the impossible. To cross the

ocean, enter Lanka guarded by Rakshasas, meet Seeta and yet come back alive is something no one would dare think of. Hanuman, your strength and power have no equal. You are my saviour as well as of the Raghu dynasty. Alas! I have no suitable reward to give you.” With tears of joy flowing from his eyes, Shree Ram clasped Hanuman in a tight and affectionate embrace.

Shree Ram then had a doubt. How would the huge Vanar army manage to cross the vast and endless ocean? But Sugreev had no such doubts. He declared confidently: “Dear friend, don’t lose heart. Doubt and worry weakens the mind and body. And where is the need to worry now? Hanuman has opened the doors of victory for us. Ravan’s days are numbered.”

Shree Ram sa id , “You a re r i gh t , Sugreev . Le t us prepare to attack Lanka without delay. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Sugreev prepared the Vanars for war and set out. The earth trembled when Kishkindha’s army marched towards the seashore. Hanuman, Angad, Jambavan, Neel, Nal, Maind, Dwividh and Gandhamadan were the main commandeers of this mighty force. Things were happening in Lanka too. Vibheeshan, Ravan’s youngest brother advised Ravan to restore Seeta to Ram and not to incur Ram’s enmity and plunge Lanka and the Rakshasas into disaster. But Ravan was arrogant because of his immense strength and kicked Vibheeshan out of Lanka, saying, “Get lost, you traitor.”

Vibheeshan then came to Shree Ram and said, “O Ram! I totally disapprove of my brother’s conduct. Truth is on your side. I wish to be on the side of truth. Do give me asylum.”

But Sugreev and the Vanars doubted his sincerity and said that it must be Ravan’s cunning trick to trap Shree Ram. How could they trust Vibheeshan! He too was a Rakshas. Then Hanuman stepped forward and cleared everyone’s doubts, saying, “We must not doubt Vibheeshan’s sincerity. He is a very virtuous and honest person. He saved my life by reminding Ravan of royal ethics when Ravan had ordered his soldiers to kill me. Vibheeshan dislikes Ravan’s immoral behaviour.” Shree Ram agreed with Hanuman.

Shree Ram worshipped the ocean for three days. But there was no response. Ultimately Shree Ram prepared to dry up the ocean with his powerful arrows.

Then the Ocean deity appeared before Shree Ram in human form. He begged for forgiveness, saying, “Pardon me, Shree Ram. Please don’t misunderstand me. I cannot cross my limits. Nal in you army is an excellent engineer. He can build a bridge over the ocean. You may entrust this work to him.”

Nal undertook the difficult task of building a bridge over the ocean. As the Vanars tried to construct the bridge with huge boulders and trees, everything sank into the water. All were nonplussed.

Then Hanuman said, “Look, we have to drop these things in water by chanting Shree Ram’s name. Faith is a powerful factor that helps in completing the most difficult of tasks.” Everyone accepted his suggestion.

They started rebuilding the bridge with boulders and tree trunks and chanted Shree Ram’s name and putting the name of Ra and ma on the bricks. Lo and behold! The bricks kept floating and got joined. The bridge to Lanka was completed in no time.

The endless Vanar army, under the leadership of Shree Ram and Lakshman, crossed the sea and safely reached Lanka.

24.THEENDOFRAVAN

Ravan received the news of Shree Ram’s arrival with his huge army. He was somewhat worried because Hanuman’s extraordinary valour was still afresh in his memory. But he would not admit it. The Vanar army under the leadership of Shree Ram and Sugreev was ready for war. Ravan’s brother Vibheeshan had also joined them. It was therefore not possible for Ravan or his Rakshasas to use magic or sorcery against Ram since Vibheeshan was sure to help them overcome such measures. Ravan’s old grandfather Malyavan tried to reason with

him, saying: “Ravan, my son, one should not start a conflict for flimsy reasons. I think you should return Seeta to Ram and avoid an unnecessary war.” But Ravan was sunk in arrogance about his own power. He laughed, “Grandfather, it seems that you are afraid of this Ram and his bunch. I am Ravan, conqueror of the three worlds. How can this puny Ram even think of matching me? Be sure that I shall finish him in no time.” Ravan then called a council of war. Prahast, his commander-in-chief, Indrajit, his invincible son, Naraantak, Devaantak, Trishiras and Atikaay his other sons, Kumbhakarna’s sons, Kumbh and Nikumbh, other fearsome Rakshas warriors like Dhoomraksh, Vajradanshtra and Akampan were part of the war council. Ravan ordered them: “These puny Vanars led by those two ordinary forest-dwellers Ram and Lakshman have dared to challenge the dominance of the Rakshasas. Let us finish them all. The world will know what happens to those who challenge Ravan.” Ram sent Angad, Vaali’s son, to make, if possible, some compromise with Ravan as a last effort before the war began. But Ravan was in no mood to listen to any good advice and told Angad, “Get lost Vanar. I am not in the least afraid of that junglee Ram. Go and tell him to be ready for the war if he has any courage.” Angad returned safely from Lanka and reported the happenings to Shree Ram. All efforts at peace had failed. Maharaj Sugreev ordered his army to assault Lanka. The Vanar army roared: “Long live Shree Ram! Long live Lakshman! Long live Maharaj Sugreev!” and fell upon Lanka with weapons, huge boulders and uprooted trees. Upon Ravan’s orders, the Rakshas army led by Indrajit rode out of the city on horses, chariots and elephants. “Long live Maharaj Ravan! Long live Lanka! Long live Rakshasas!” they yelled. The terrible war had begun. Warriors on both sides began to fall. Indrajit was a very dangerous warrior. Because of his tapasya, he had obtained innumerable divine astras and shastras. He also was the master of sorcery and illusion apart from being fearless. When he saw that the war against the Kishkindhan army was tough, he became invisible and showered arrows on the Vanars, causing great destruction. He then used the Sarpastra (deadly serpents which were turned into arrows) on the Vanars, Ram and Lakshman, who became helpless and fell down unconscious. The Rakshas army was overjoyed. Meghnad Indrajit entered Lanka in triumph and told his father, “I have finished both Ram and Lakshman. We are victorious.” Ravan joy was boundless. He took Seeta with him and took a round over the battlefield by his Pushpak Viman (a divine aerial vehicle) to show her the fallen bodies of Shree Ram and Lakshman. He hoped that at least after watching the dead body of her husband, she would succumb to his will. Seeta though shocked did not lose heart. Shree Ram and Lakshman were not dead. They were only unconscious due to the deadly Sarpastra. Sugreev and the army were sunk in grief but at that moment Garud (the eagle who is the vehicle of Bhagwan Vishnu) arrived there. Eagles are the deadly enemies of serpents. Hence with the arrival of Garud (eagle), the effect of Sarpastra vanished. Shree Ram and Lakshman recovered from their unconscious state and were soon ready to fight. The Vanar army roared in triumph. Ravan was stunned when he came to know that Ram and Lakshman had broken the bonds of the Sarpastra. He then sent his powerful Rakshas warriors into the battlefield.

Page 54: Katharoop Ramayan

Dhoomraksh, Vajradanshtra, Akampan and the commander-in-chief of the Lankan army Prahast went to the front. Hanuman, Angad and Neel slew them. In panic, Ravan had to wake up his giant brother Kumbhkarna and ask him to deal with the Vanars. Kumbhkarna caused great destruction of the Vanar army, but he too fell, slain by Shree Ram. Ravan was shocked at Kumbhkarna’s death. Naraantak, Devaantak, Trishiras, Atikaay, Kumbh, Nikumbh, Makaraksh, Mahodar, Mahaapaarshva and many other ferocious Rakshas warriors went to continue the war accompanied by huge armies. None of them returned alive to Lanka.

Indrajit, Ravan’s powerful son once again entered the battlefield. He proceeded to the Nikumbhila forest to perform a secret yagya. If Indrajit were to complete this yagya, he would become invincible. Vibheeshan helped Lakshman reach Nikumbhila just in time to challenge Indrajit. In a fierce battle, Lakshman killed Indrajit. Ravan’s last hope was gone.

Having lost all his leading warriors, Ravan himself came out. In the past, Ravan had pleased Lord Shiva by his austere penance and obtained boons from him. Thus, he had become very powerful and an extremely menacing Rakshas. Shree Ram, Lakshman and the Vanar army endured great danger when they faced Ravan. At the very outset, Ravan knocked Lakshman unconscious by using a powerful shakti (a javelin invested with mantras to make it very powerful).

Shree Ram and the Vanars were down with sorrow. But Sushen, the best doctor among the Vanars examined Lakshman and said that he would recover if medicine prepared from a plant called Sanjeevani would be given to him. Hanuman alone could fetch that plant.

Hanuman immediately flew towards the Dronagiri Mountain in the north to bring that plant. But on reaching there he was confused. He could not make out which among the numerous plants on the mountain was the Sanjeevani. He uprooted the whole of the Dronagiri Mountain on the palm of his hand and returned to the battlefield in Lanka. All were astonished at his extraordinary strength and speed. Sushen extracted the juice from Sanjeevani plant and administered to Lakshman who recovered immediately.

Then Shree Ram and Ravan were locked in combat for a long time. Both were competent and powerful. Finally, as per Agastya rishi’s advice Ram prayed to the deity of Sun and resumed battle with Ravan. Shree Ram invoked the Brahmastra, placed it on his bow and dispatched it towards Ravan. The divine astra pierced Ravan’s heart and he collapsed and fell dead. The gods in heaven and the good people on earth were happy at Ravan’s end.

The gods showered flowers on Shree Ram. Dharma had triumphed over evil.

Lesson to remember:A wickedand cruel person is sure tobe defeated.

25.SEETAUNDERGOESTHEFIREORDEAL

Shree Ram enthroned Vibheeshan as the new king of Lanka. Ram then thought of Seeta, who was imprisoned by Ravan under constant watch of the Rakshasis. Vibheeshan and his wife Sarma personally went to Ashok Van to bring Seeta. They said to her, “We are freed from the clutches of Ravan. Please come with us. We shall take you to Shree Ram.”

This news was like nectar to Seeta’s ears. “Has Ravan really been slain? At last, the evil one has received just punishment. I am free,” she exclaimed with joy and relief.

Queen Sarma applied oil and perfumed paste to Seeta’s body and bathed her; dressed her in new clothes and decked her with flowers. She was then taken to where Shree Ram and everyone else were waiting.

When Shree Ram and Seeta saw each other tears of joy rolled down their cheeks. The whole atmosphere was filled with joy. But then strangely, Shree Ram said to Seeta in a cold voice: “I have killed Ravan, as you wished and rescued you from imprisonment. But…but…how can I accept you back? You have lived in the abode of another.”

“My lord! What you have spoken is unworthy of your noble character. I was in Ravan’s custody for a year. It was against my wish that the evil Ravan kidnapped me by force. But you do not want to accept me even if you have full faith in me. Lakshman, prepare a fire for me,” said Seeta with anger and sadness.

Reluctantly Lakshman obeyed Seeta. All present were shocked and stunned.

After praying to the gods, Seeta declared “O Agni! If I am as chaste as you, I would not be harmed and come out safe.”

Then Seeta entered into the fire with great courage. As everyone wailed aloud, the flames rose high up in the air.

After entering the fire, Seeta stood quietly among the flames with folded hands.

At that moment, a miracle took place. Agni Dev himself appeared. He led Seeta forward. Agni Dev said to Shree Ram: “Ram, Seeta is absolutely pure in her character. Accept her without any doubts.”

So saying Agni Dev disappeared. The flames had done no harm either to Seeta’s body or clothes. Shree Ram welcomed Seeta.

Thus Seeta proved her chastity and purity in the most extraordinary way in the presence of thousands of those who were present there. All hailed her whole-heartedly.

“Long live Seeta!” “Long live Shree Ram!”

Lessons to remember:Misunderstandings and doubts are dangerous. They must be cleared immediately.

Purity of character stands any test successfully.

26.BACK TO AYODHYA

Maharaj Vibheeshan of Lanka said while expressing his gratitude to Shree Ram: “Dear Shree Ram! I shall ever remain indebted to you for the whole of my life. You have killed the most powerful and cruel Rakshas Ravan and that is why I am king of Lanka. Please stay for few days in Lanka. I very much desire to felicitate you.” Shree Ram said: “Vibheeshan, I have not achieved anything extraordinary. Our victory in this war was the result of our joint efforts. You did not side with your evil brother but offered us most valuable help. Hanuman’s power and valour are matchless. Sugreev joined us with his entire army. That is why we could slay Ravan and so many other powerful Rakshasas.” “Now I have to return back to Ayodhya immediately to keep the promise given to Bharat. Hence I request you to make arrangements to send us back.” Vibheeshan decided to send them, back by the Pushpak Viman. He immediately made all arrangements. Shree Ram, Lakshman, Hanuman Sugreev and some selected Vanars entered it. Vibheeshan also joined Ram and the others. Then the Pushpak Viman rose in the air. During their journey to Ayodhya, Shree Ram showed various places to Seeta and told her what had happened on their way to Kishkindha and later Lanka, during her absence. As neared Ayodhya, Shree Ram sent Hanuman to Bharat with a message of his arrival. There were two reasons behind his decision to send Hanuman to Bharat. Shree Ram wanted to know whether all was well with Bharat and secondly, whether Bharat had changed due to the power he had enjoyed as ruler for quite a long time. Shree Ram wanted to know Bharat’s reaction. Hanuman reached Ayodhya ahead of others and called on Bharat. He bowed to king Bharat and said, “Maharaj Bharat, your brothers Shree Ram, Lakshman and sister-in-law Seeta will arrive in Ayodhya tomorrow.” Bharat’s joy knew no bounds when he got the news of Ram’s arrival. He embraced Hanuman out of joy saying, “You have brought the happiest news for me. I have been waiting eagerly for this news for the last fourteen years. Please go and inform Shree Ram that Bharat as well as all Ayodhya will receive him with great joy.” Ayodhya was decorated with garlands and flowers. Musical instruments started playing. The grounds were swept clean and rangolis were drawn. People thronged in hundreds of thousands at the city’s outskirts to receive their beloved Shree Ram. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta were given an emotional and affectionate welcome. People showered flowers

upon them. The air reverberated with slogans. After fourteen years of gloom, Ayodhya could at last be happy. Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyee were delighted beyond words. Shree Ram, Lakshman and Seeta bowed to them and received their blessings. Brothers embraced each other. It was the beginning of a new era. In a grand ceremony Shree Ram was crowned as the emperor. Ayodhya swam in joy. Under Shree Ram’s rule everyone was very happy. Shree Ram was an ideal king who was kind, truthful and brave. He was always true to his words, particularly in fulfilling the expectations of the common man. His reign known as RamRajya became immortal for all time to come.

27. THE ABANDONMENT OF SEETA

When Shree Ram reigned over Ayodhya, everyone was happy. Yet, he thought that as a king he should know what the ordinary people thought of him. Ram appointed confidants and informers to know what was spoken about him in Kosal. One day, one of his informers said bluntly, “Your Majesty, the people are happy and content. But some say that Seeta, who was abducted by Ravan and imprisoned in his Lanka, cannot be chaste. Some even think that you should not have accepted her.” Shree Ram was shocked. Seeta had gone through a fire ordeal, which was witnessed by all the Vanars, Sugreev, Hanuman, all residents of Lanka and Vibheeshan. Ram’s grief knew no bounds. But he decided that to satisfy his subjects he must abandon Seeta. A king must always be above suspicion. Seeta was pregnant at that time. She wished to spend few days in some forest or ashram. Shree Ram decided to take this opportunity and under the pretext of satisfying her wish he decided to send her to the forest. Ram wanted to wipe off even the slightest blot on his character. He summoned Lakshman and ordered him, “Lakshman, take Seeta with you tomorrow morning and leave her at Maharshi Valmiki’s ashram. Don’t bring her back. You have to return to Ayodhya all alone. I do not want any discussion on this topic. It is my order and you have to carry it out.” Even as he spoke, Ram’s heart was heavy with sorrow. Next day Lakshman left Seeta near Rishi Valmiki’s ashram. As he turned to leave, Seeta asked him with surprise, “What is this? How can you think leaving me all alone in this jungle?” “O Seeta, I am helpless. I have to carry out Shree Ram’s order.” Lakshman’s voice was choked with emotion. “Alas! So Shree Ram has decided to abandon me forever, although I had proved my chastity by entering into the fire. All right. I shall now bring up my children. Lakshman, give my good wishes to my lord Shree Ram.”Lakshman bowed to Seeta and returned back to Ayodhya with a heavy heart.

Lessons to remember: A king’sbehaviour shouldbe free of any blemish. A king’s character should be ideal and spotless.

28.SHREE RAMCOMPLETES HISMISSION

Seeta approached the Maharshi Valmiki’s ashram brokenhearted. She could understand Shree Ram’s behaviour but was overwhelmed by sorrow. Tears rolled down her cheeks. The ashram ladies who saw her informed rishi Valmiki about her. When Maharshi Valmiki came out, he found that it was Seeta, the empress of Ayodhya. He asked the reason of her arrival into the forest. Seeta told him everything. He said, “Dear Seeta, you need not worry. My ashram will take proper care of you.” Shree Ram continued to reign over Ayodhya. His youngest brother Shatrughna, killed the Rakshas Lavanasur, who had been troubling sages and the people for years. Shatrughna also conquered his kingdom Madhura city and

ruled over it. In due time Seeta gave birth to twins. Maharshi Valmiki named them Lav and Kush. Valmiki brought them up with love inculcating in them the best of the samskars. He imparted all knowledge, statecraft as well as warfare. Both of them had very sweet voices. So Valmiki taught them to sing Ramcharit (the story of Ram). After some years Ram thought of performing the Ashvamedh Yagya. He invited many kings, rishis and Brahmins. Vibheeshan came from Lanka. Rishi Valmiki also arrived with Lav and Kush. He had advised the children to sing Ramcharit whenever possible. If anyone asked them who they were they would reply “we are Maharshi Valmiki’s disciples.” Lav and Kush sang at various places. People were deeply moved by their sweet singing. Shree Ram also heard about these twins who sang his own life story so beautifully. Shree Ram decided to have a programme of their songs after the Ashvamedh Yagya. He asked these children, “Whose sons are you?” and they replied as rishi Valmiki had told them. “We are Maharshi Valmiki’s disciples.” Shree Ram asked, “Where is Maharshi Valmiki?” “He is here in the yagya,” they said. Shree Ram expressed a desire to hear them sing. While listening to both of them singing, Shree Ram’s mind was filled with love for them. He suddenly felt they might be his own sons. He went to Maharshi Valmiki and bowed to him. Valmiki said, “Shree Ram, these children who sing so sweetly are your own sons. Seeta is in my ashram.” “Maharshi, I wish that Seeta should come here to the royal court and once again undergo an ordeal to prove her chastity.” Seeta arrived in Ayodhya. She bowed to Shree Ram and said to the Mother Earth: “O Mother Earth, if I am pure and chaste, accept me back into your fold. Let me reside within you.” Instantly the earth opened up, Seeta entered inside and disappeared into its belly. Shree Ram and all assembled were overwhelmed with sorrow. Shree Ram found his life empty. For him everything seemed to be over. After some years, Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyee passed away of old age. Lakshman entered Samadhi when he realized that Shree Ram had decided to close his chapter on earth. Finally Shree Ram sought the blessings of rishis, entered the river Sarayu and ended his mission on earth. Many of Vanars and Rakshasas and citizens of Ayodhya too joined him.

Lesson to remember: When one’s mission on this earth is over, one’s life’s purpose is fulfilled.
