My academic coursework has had a strong focus on the sciences and writing. This is because the environmental studies program combines communication and science, so Ill be able to communicate about science creatively and concisely, which is what I plan on doing in my career. Ive taken a few different technical writing courses, technology courses such as information technology and web authoring, and many science courses including chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, biology, soil science, and ecology to name a few. 4

Throughout my academic career, Ive developed my technical writing and web authoring skills in the courses mentioned on the previous slide. I have a strong background in science, more specifically environmental science which encompasses a wide range of sciences including biology, ecology, and chemistry. Ive been a research assistant in the college of communication arts and sciences, where Ive learned how to read research reports, and analyze and manage data. My short term career goal is to become an environmental analyst. Environmental analysts gather information for projects that companies want approved by environmental policy. So as an environmental analyst, I would analyze all of the information I could find regarding the projects potential to impact the environment. Next I would prepare various technical documents that explain these impacts for NEPA which stands for National Environmental Policy Act, and if Im working in California, Ill also have to make sure the project complies with CEQA the California Environmental Quality Act. Examples of the documents Ill be preparing for CEQA and NEPA include Environmental Impact reports, or EIRs, Negative Declarations or NDs, Mitigated Negative Declarations or MNDs, Initial Studies, etc. 6Thank you for listening
