Smart City & Tourism A Smart City is an innovative city that uses Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and other means to leverage quality of life, efficiency of urban operations and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental impacts.

Key Pillars of Smart City

• Tourist interests can be better

understood by the technological

advances in ICT

• It also allows Tourists and Tourism

service providers to optimize their

choices of destinations and activities,

resulting in:

• Enhanced tourism experience

• Safety

• Increased spend per user

• Connectivity

The key pillars of Smart Cities can be leveraged for Tourism

14

Internet of Things (IoT) as an enabler for Tourism

Internet of Things (IoT) is the concept that connects physical and real objects to the internet & is a major technological component to build Smart Cities. It has immense potential in the Tourism Industry

Real time updates about nearby points of interest, accommodation, dining options, weather and currency rates

Augmented reality features such as overlaying icons to explain precisely what a tourist is looking for

Tourist Tracking System to coordinate transport as per the number of Tourists

Suggestions based on tourist interests and preferences resulting in higher spends

Explore more of what one likes, explore less of the beaten path!

Deterring crime by CCTV Cameras and video analytics

Relevant targeted information or broadcast of useful information to smartphones through Beacons

15

Case Studies : Smart TourismTour guide system “Nahaam” launched by Road Transport Authority, Dubai which gives Tourist real time information about the landscapes and routes

Dubai’s Airport smart gate system which has dramatically shortened immigration waiting time for passengers through electronic identificationDubai’s Airport smart gate system which has dramatically shortened immigration waiting time for passengers through electronic identification

Weimer, Germany has combined Internet of Things (IoT) and Augmented Reality (AR) Applications by launching a map app wherein, tourists can easily find locations that support Augmented Reality Applications experiences - e.g. historical photos superimposed on current scene

In Thailand’s Phuket, “Smart Phuket Application“ uses IoT to improve local services, assimilating data from Local and National Government, Businesses, Social Media and other open data sources

16

Smart Tourism is the way forward but caution is needed!

• It is imperative to have a clear Business case before IoT implementation and an estimation of the Return on Investment (ROI). Since, IoT implementation incurs heavy investment cost.

• Internet of Things generates massive amounts of data to help streamline operations and better serve travelers. But trying to make sense of all that information requires a parallel investment in the right software and people to interpret the information and help draw actionable conclusions.

IoT requires huge investments IoT needs to be backed up by good analysis

Smart vs Privacy!

• IoT sensors will provide travel brands with incredible new insights into their travelers’ habits. But customers also need to feel confident that their personal information is being used responsibly.
