  • Summer is definitely in full swing and we found some hammocks

to take a swing in (page 68). And while youre outside, theres

plenty of ways to protect yourself from those summer rays (pages

    80 and 84).

Want to live at the lake? KC offers some of the best lake

communities we visited two lake homes that will make you

ask, When can I move in? (pages 36 and 49).

Hankering for something grilled for dinner? Dave Eckert, our

new Indulgence writer and producer and host of Culinary Travels

with Dave Eckert, has some great tips for mastering seafood on

    the grill (page 74).

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Home of Distinction tour

(page 54). At almost 11,000 square feet, this home is one not to

miss. Ticket proceeds benefit Bradens Hope, a wonderful charity

helping in the fight against childhood cancer.

Ok, I have to admit that one of the perks of my job is that I get to

meet some pretty terrific people homeowners, business owners,

sports players and even a TV star or two. But its when you ring

the doorbell and the first thing you hear is a woof from the other

side of the door that really puts a smile on my face. Yes, Im a

dog person. Dont get me wrong, Im not against cats, but its

something about those furry four-legged creatures whose tails

are wildly wagging that tugs at my heart strings.

And so it was on a recent photo shoot. Besides two super

homeowners, I was greeted by two loving Boston Terriers, Maiya

and Noodles. They were just as excited to have their home featured

in this issue as were the people who lived there! Staging

themselves into several shots, it was their day to shine. They even

had to join me in this shot for my column. I thank them and their

owners for being gracious hosts while we invaded their home.

Take a tour yourself on page 18.

f ever the proverbial wow factor was written all over a home,

this one has it. Just a quick glance at all of the amazing interior

photos not only provides a warm embrace upon all of your senses,

it makes you realize that so many layers of personality and charm

can comfortably decorate and add just the right amount of fun and

whimsy while still giving a strong nod to character and integrity.

Although this is a new home, these walls can definitely talk and they

have so many stories to tell.

Designed by NSPJ Architects, this 2,900 square foot home located

in the West Plaza area boasts two complete living levels in addition

to a basement and a rooftop gathering spot that could easily be the

    talk of the neighborhood.

It was interesting to see this go from just a foundation and garage

slab when we first bought it to what it is today, said the owner. The

former home was torn down and we worked from a clean slate.

After construction was completed, the owners moved in two

months ago and enthusiastically put their fingerprints all over the

place with some of the most imaginative ideas in terms of design,

    artwork, accessories and style.

This is a departure from anything weve had before, noted the

homeowners, who previously lived in a ranch-style home with a

pool and large yard near Meyer Circle. This time around I wanted

something that was low maintenance and more energy efficient.

This modern home, with a healthy balance of

mid-century influences, will first catch your eye at

the curb and when you cross its initial threshold, it

will undoubtedly capture your heart. Of course, the

owner jokingly refers to the front yard as postage

stamp size, but that is just fine with him, as it trends

with his desire for a low maintenance abode. The

remaining perimeter of the yard enjoys casual and

comfortable landscaping of minimal impact but still

of great personality. The exterior siding of the home

does its job by offering a warm and modern look.

The wood lends texture, color and warmth under

the eaves of the roof, stated the owners. Other

materials include stucco and two kinds of metal

brown corrugated metal on the lower part and white

    metal on top.

Besides the home itself, the owners are thrilled

with living in an area of town that is growing in a

sort of Renaissance style, close to the Plaza and

Westwood Park, which is the perfect spot to walk

their two Boston Terriers, Noodles and Maiya.

The journey to get to this point, however, did

    PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

require a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality as forces

came together to complete the look, and, invariably,

the couple did encounter a few differences of

opinion, but it is their own unique tastes that seem

    to work so compatibly together.

Our prior home was not truly a reflection of the

two of us, expressed the owners. And when we

sold that home, we not only sold the house, but also

most of the furnishings to the buyer. We basically just

took with us our personal effects and certain pieces

    of artwork.

Yesa clean slatefrom top to bottom, and

what a perfect platform from which to create a space

that blends the couples tastes, and it is interesting

to move about the home and begin to understand

which eye and style had a hand in the shaping of

each room. With three bedrooms (one of which

doubles as the office), two and one half bathrooms,

all floors are either tiled or hardwood, except for

the master bedroom, which has distressed and

washed bamboo flooring and warm accent tones

throughout of grey and French blue.

  • KCH&S July/August 2016 | 21

  • 22 | KCH&S July/August 2016

  • My taste tends towards excess, noted the

homeowner. I tend to think about all of the details,

whereas my partner excels at editing me and

pulling me back when needed. It was definitely a fun

process, but not without its frustrations on occasion.

Among the many focal points of the home include

the three inset glass floor panels made of half-inch

tempered safety glass in the upper hallway. Not only

do they provide that initial jaw-dropping expression,

they also turn up the volume on functionality.

This is a long, narrow home that can get dark in

the middle, explained the homeowner. These panels

serve to harvest the light from the penthouse level

and bring it down to the lower level. Additionally, the

panels have accent lights beneath them to enhance

the area once the sun goes down.

So.do you actually walk across them?

While we have obviously gotten used to them, it

is interesting to note that when guests come over,

they initially tend to walk around the glass, laughed

    the owner.

The see-through staircase is made of aluminum

and glass in a mid-century pattern.

I left the aluminum raw, as I like

the distressed nature it gives, said

    the owner.

Most of the artwork within the

home is locally sourced and Kansas

    City inspired.

That was very important to us,

    noted the homeowners. We have

many beautiful things in Kansas City

    that need to be celebrated.

    Among the many personal touches

that you most likely wont see in

any other home are the pieces of

both owners past that still have a

    heartbeat today.

  • For example, the mid-century collection of salt and pepper

shakers, once put away in boxes because of lack of space in

which to display them, now enjoy their new home in the dining

area. Moving into the office, there is a grand collection of toys,

from sock monkeys made by an aunt and mom many years ago

to a seemingly endless collection of little people that line the

shelves. From a distance, they bring a pop of color to the space,

and when viewed up close, you eventually realize that they are

cleverly placed and displayed toys from days gone by. An old

drum made by one of the owners when he was in Boy Scouts

holds its own on a side table and the triangular wall mural gives

    the room added character.

Other fun touches include the highboy cabinet with eclectic

mid-century lines in the entry way accented by a collection of

circle mirrors above; a KCP&L historic tower tile mural with an

    actual blinking red beacon light at the top made by the owner;

and the pice de rsistance the cant miss Gulf sign that

adorns the wall going up the stairs.

  • I had a love of vintage, large scaled signs for

years and when I found this at a place called

Retro Inferno, that re-inspired me, he said. It is 72

inches in diameter and has backlit LED tape lighting

and a frame built around it to match the wood

    ceiling in the penthouse.

The upstairs penthouse level is the perfect

lounging spot after the end of a long day. The coffee

table doubles as a gas fire pit with volcano rock.

There are hookups in place for an outdoor TV and

a hammock with accompanying umbrella is the

perfect spot for that late afternoon weekend nap.

The simple approachability of the space can certainly

make anyone feel comfortable enough to kick off

his shoes and sit back for a bit.

We definitely feel at home here. This place has so

many opportunities to talk, smiled the owners.

McDermott and the RDM Architecture team were

fully involved with the development of the home, which

encompassed roughly four years of committed teamwork.

In addition to the 10,000 square feet of living space, there

is another 5,000 square feet of usable outdoor space which

is easily accessed from within the home. Just like a

jaw-dropping piece of art, this inhabitable sculpture

represents the result of keen attention to detail, design,

functionality and form, seamlessly coming together as

undoubtedly one of the top designs in the portfolio of

    RDM Architecture.

This Mediterranean style home has four bedrooms plus

one additional room currently used as an exercise room that

can be converted to another bedroom in the future, along

with two half baths, one full bath with tub and four full

baths with showers, noted McDermott. This house was

completely customized for the owners and they were

involved in the design and the material selection throughout

a long and in-depth process which resulted in a great house

that fits their style and the way they live.

Among the outstanding highlights of this home include

the helical staircase and tower above in the entryway; a

two-story great room; a master suite with a formal sitting

room; sun room; main floor laundry room that doubles as a

catering kitchen and Her office and lower level gathering

room and theater room. There is also a second floor screen

porch that offers a spectacular view. Mahogany was a

running theme throughout the home, as well, and was used

in the ceilings in the great room, as well as in the trim and

the columns. The numerous outdoors spaces situated on

all levels, along with large windows strategically placed

throughout, support the ambiance of being among nature

at nearly every turn. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

  • and light to allow for the views. We also used various

greenery and plants in the repetition of colors and

patterns on fabrics throughout the home, repeating

landscape colors against a neutral background. This was

truly a labor of love, from choosing the furniture, the

accessories, the tile work and all of the hard finishes.

Virtually every piece of furniture, as well as every fabric

and trim, was chosen specifically for the home. The

owners were very participatory with every decision made

and we all took a cue from them.

The formal sitting room, for example, enjoys a

    hand-carved limestone fireplace and a foliage-enhanced

area rug. African mahogany on the trim work adds a

strong layer of style. The main kitchen (one of three in

the home!) enjoys limestone quartz countertops and

handcrafted back splash tiles, along with a hand painted

carved tile relief of a basket of fruit and flowers over the

range. Even the refrigerator provides a unique look with

    its armoire faade.

An inviting sun room enjoys a sprinkling of colors with

purple, pink and orange popping throughout as rattan

chairs, a painted farmhouse table, hand painted tile

around the fire place and hand painted accent tile in the

floor complete the relaxed and casual vibe.

Besides going green for the natural aspects of the

home, green elements were incorporated to include

ground source geothermal heating; spray foam insulation,

deep overhangs and energy efficient double glazing

reduced solar gain, and the maintenance of mature trees

    wherever possible to maximize shade.

This project was definitely the consummate

collaboration, stated interior design expert James.

There was never a meeting without myself (representing

the client) or a representative of both the builder and of

RDM Architecture from the time I became involved

    through its completion.

James indicated one of the the most notable features

of the home is the spectacular inlaid marble center

medallion in the custom designed floor on the main

level in the curvature of the staircase that was specifically

designed for the home. With so many exquisite details

throughout the home, each room is part of a greater

tapestry working together cohesively to provide

beauty, comfort, and spectacular views as well as very

    livable spaces.

The primary goals with respect to this home were to

maximize the setting and to bring the outdoors in, James

explained. That meant the incorporation of lots of glass

And while the upper levels of the home tend

towards more of an elegant, yet still homey feel,

the lower level bar and theater area suggest a more

rustic and casual atmosphere. The wool plaid sofa

and the subtle browns and greens on the chairs,

which are traditional pieces with a bit of heather on

them, lend themselves to that feeling. The sliding

barn doors are designed to close off the space

or to open it up, and the custom designed wine

cellar behind the bar is not to be missed.

In my 40 years as a residential home builder,

I can certainly say that this home is one of the

most intricately detailed homes, using the finest

materials and workmanship we have ever built,

expressed builder Julian. The homeowners were

a dream to work with since they enjoyed every step

of the process and made a financial commitment

to make it the very best it could be. In a 40-year

career, you hope to have at least one project where

the owners are committed to produce the best of

the best, and this client fulfilled that dream with the

completion of this true work of art.

One of Julians favorite aspects of this home is

the helical main staircase, which opens to the

expansive living area, featuring solid mahogany

    throughout.

The attention to detail in this home far exceeds

any expectation you may have as you tour the

layout, said Julian. Working with the owners as

they strived for perfection truly helped us jointly

create a masterpiece. This is the type of project

an owner (and their builder) can only create once

    in a lifetime.

    Landscape designer Heichel expressed similar

    sentiments.

It was challenging to work with this level of

client, conveyed Heichel. Its a place that has a

million-dollar view, and the Tuscan-style design is

    reflected in the outdoor elements.

We married the interior of the home to the

exterior, picking up on the same style, said

Heichel, noting that home sits on a large double

lot with 50 feet of fall from the main level to the

lowest part of the road. With everyone working

  • consistent basis throughout the year, pruning,

planting, weed pulling, adjusting irrigation timers,

fertilizing the flowers, mowing and chemical

applications, all to ensure that the integrity of the

    design is maintained.

Other exciting features around the perimeter of

the home include an upper level screened porch

that overlooks the various gardens, landscapes

and the lake. There is a covered outdoor kitchen,

pool, waterfall, hot tub and fire pit.

This is a vacation home in and of itself,

expressed Heichel. And the backyard specifically

has a resort-like feeling to it.

A solid team player, Heichel is quick to point out

that with a project of this magnitude, no one

person gets all of the credit.

It required the effort of all of us together the

best of the best and it was exciting to work

with these brilliant design minds and contractors to

    create this masterpiece, said Heichel.

together, this home was built right the first time,

and the homeowner understands and appreciates

the value of that level of quality.

Creating the landscape features required a

very analytical approach, factoring in all of the

layouts, the gardens, the terraces and the

hardscapes, ensuring each worked in tandem with

the other creating a seamless and harmonious

presentation. Taking a leisurely walk along the

grounds is somewhat akin to strolling through an

    outdoor museum.

There are so many levels of patios and

vignettes with varying degrees of sun shade and

views, emphasized Heichel. In fact, this home

has been on a number of garden tours already.

It has a very active landscape with constant

blooming color depending upon the season. I

love to see all of the changing colors throughout

    the year.

natural flow from room to room, Bartlett has been an integral part of creating a genuinely calm,

peaceful and serene environment that coordinates perfectly with the outdoor landscape and

is beautifully inspired by the water.

I love this location. The home is so beautiful. It was built in a very traditional way but it

currently supports a more transitional style, she said, referring to the unique touches she has

incorporated into the home, elevating its look to embrace an updated style without losing touch

    with its traditional roots.

A true stand-out in this home is the inviting living room. With two couches symmetrically, yet

casually, facing one another to provide the perfect place in which folks can just lose themselves

for hours in conversation while allowing the copious amounts of light and the stunning lake

view to provide enough visual entertainment without overwhelming the space. The

light grey walls partner harmoniously with the tweed-like, nubby linen fabric of the

couches and with the soft baby blue with a hint of grey on the expansive area rug,

along with the spindle chairs flanking either side of the fireplace, all of which

encourage both a formal and informal gathering spot.

The darker than royal blue colors on the chairs match the dark urns on top of

the fireplace mantle while the checkered aqua blue and white coral pattern of the

couch throw pillows offset the tone of the hardwood flooring and work well with the

    coffered ceiling above.

The original ceiling in this room was dark and the owner repainted it a bright white,

also adding a new stone fireplace and hardwood flooring, noted Bartlett.

The dining room makes a statement with a unique distressed table that provides

a beachy look. The accompanying slip cover chairs give it a casual feel which are

tempered by the two burlap ones on either end, giving the space a bit of texture.

The existing pendant lighting and hardwood flooring in this room complete the look,

    along with the unassuming centerpiece.

Above... The relaxing entry way speaks its mind with a strong industrialpiece made of recycled wood with metal supports holding the corners.

Made of all recycled pieces, it sits on wheels that are about eight inches in diameter.Accent pieces include a piece of driftwood and a perfectly placed candle

to complete the look without cluttering the space.

  • It was important to keep the centerpiece on this table to a minimum to allow the

light fixtures to be more of the focal point, noted Bartlett.

The deck just off the dining room is the perfect extension, not only of the home

but also of the day. Can you just imagine yourself relaxing with a cool beverage

on a warm summers evening while lounging in these comfortable wicker resin

    outdoor chairs?

I could just sit out there and spend an entire day, smiled Bartlett.

Working with a palette of blues and greys throughout the home, Bartlett has

captured an easy-going coastal feel reminiscent of a cozy seaside cottage. She

has successfully blended soothing hues along with numerous beach-like accessories

and furnishings, to create an appealing look.

Because this home sits on the lake, the details of the furniture and the accessories

provide a coastal-like atmosphere without being too beachy.

It is good not to have everything match to allow for more depth and interest in the

space, emphasized Bartlett. It makes it more interesting that way.

Right... The focal piece here is the live edge top, a strong focal point that isthe perfect piece upon which to coordinate matching vases with palm leaves, preserved green plant material in a wooden bowl in the middle and a simple

piece of driftwood. The artwork just above the cabinet is a set of sixfern leaves with tone-on-tone mattes that still give a nod to the nature

theme without minimizing the dramatic feel of the live edge top.

Above... A pair of classic blue and white pottery pieces along with a pieceof coral in the family room maintain the nautical beach theme without

being too kitschy, and these accent pieces complement the brownleather couch and the wooden tray with wicker candle.

  • No matter if your yard is flat or has some variations in height, look at it

as a design opportunity. A hilly yard adds character and can separate

spaces. A flat yard can be a clean canvas waiting for your creative touch,

Feldkamp continues. Look closely at what you already have and make

choices based on those more permanent elements. If you have a large

tree for example, choose plants that could survive in shade or stonework

that can withstand the elements to which they will be exposed.

Wanting to create that outdoor space that sings

this is me but dont know where to start? KCH&S

shares how-to tips gathered from Chris Feldkamp,

owner of Land Design Group of Roeland Park, who

specializes in creating unique outdoor spaces that

fit your individual style and budget.

  • Feldkamp shared his most indispensable encouragement: I

think the most important thing to remember is that any space

can look stunning on any budget. Budget does not have to

restrain you when you find great inspiration. Look in magazines,

on the internet, and visit stone yards. You can have the look

and feel you want in an unlimited number of ways.

Before you start your design, it is important to know how you will use

the space as it will affect your choices. Do you want to entertain and

do you need space for the children to play? Once you determine how

you will use the space you can let that guide the kind of materials you

will use and their durability or where you will carve out space for each

activity. You may want to put the play area within view of a window or

you may want to define an area to entertain.

As you create your backyard space,

    consider long-term maintenance,

says Feldkamp. One of the biggest

mistakes most people make is in plant

choice and plant location. All plants

need some type of maintenance so

choose ones that can be managed well

with the amount of time and effort you

want to invest. The location also adds

to the maintenance factor as the right

plant in the wrong location may not

survive and need replacing. He adds,

Stone and pavers also need care, so

keep that in mind as you choose.

I always recommend that clients go to the stone yard to find some inspiration. There is

so much variation in stone and pavers that it surprises most people. If you are struggling

with how to make your space reflect your style, this is a great place to start for design

inspiration. Asking yourself the right questions is also important. Look at the rest of

your life for inspiration as well. Do you love color or do you like things to look crisp and

clean? Whatever your design aesthetic, you can absolutely carry that over into your

    backyard haven.

More than just a custom-made deck, this all-season screened porch oers year-round living possibilities.

  • ts no secret that your home is your biggest investment, and when you add a deck or

screened porch to that home, you can add some decided value to your overall investment.

More than just a structure attached to your home, a deck can serve to expand your living

space plus give you numerous ways to relax and unwind.

With a great deck or screened porch, the possibilities for year-round fun are seemingly endless.

Pop open a bottle of champagne on New Years Eve or fire up the grill and celebrate with hot

dogs and a hearty cold one on the Fourth of July. On Halloween, it can be a great place to

show off those amazing pumpkin carvings. And the best part about having a space like this? The

choices available in terms of styles, sizes and materials are numerous, offering a wide selection of

hardwoods from which to choose, as well as fasteners and under deck guttering systems.

No matter where you reside a country farmhouse, a city dwelling or a lakeside lodge a

well-constructed deck or screened porch offers you one of the best ways to connect with

nature, relax and meditate, and this particular screened porch is the epitome of what having a

    vacation at home can mean.

While a picture clearly speaks a thousand words, some of the highlights of this 18 x 22

structure include tile flooring, a real stone veneer fireplace with a three-inch limestone hand-

chiseled top cap on top, and 2 x 6 tongue-in-groove car siding on the incredible vaulted ceiling.

This space truly rivals an interior living room for personality and style.

Attached to a stunning 3,877 square foot Overland Park residence, this all-season screened

porch is clearly a stand out when it comes to outdoor living spaces.

We brought the outdoors in a bit by fully screening in the space with custom-made materials

that provide 60% UVA and UVB protection from the sun, noted the president of All Under One

Roof, the company behind the design and construction. We specialize in the details with our

  • The eye-catching tile flooring is no accident when it comes to its

design style, either. Referred to as a modified hopscotch pattern,

    three different sized tiles (12 x 12, 6 x 12, and 6 x 18) were

deliberately placed to create what appears to be more of a work of

art than simply a flooring system. Comfortable and inviting outdoor

furniture, coupled with artwork on the walls/siding and custom

powder coated Westbury aluminum handmade spindles add to the

    finesse of the space.

Just outside the screened porch is the open air martini/grill deck,

complete with a gas grill that is operated by a propane line that

    also services the fireplace.

Dry under-deck ceiling was installed under the martini/grill deck

which drains excess water to a custom gutter on the house, so

when it rains, the patio underneath remains dry.

Descending down the attached custom made iron spiral

staircase a perfect answer to minimize over-usage of space

that comes with a traditional deck staircase you are greeted

not only by meticulous landscaping but also by a welcoming body

of water that begs, Everybody in the pool!

    62 | KCH&S July/August 2016

The pool was already in place when we built the deck, said the

president. However, we added the flagstone skimstone around

the pool, grinding off the old surface and creating a new custom

    pattern.

The skimstone extends around the pool and to the patio

    underneath the main deck.

We added the skimstone underneath the deck, around the pool

and along the side of the house all the way to the front covered

porch, commented the president, also referencing the added

touches of the existing pea gravel, flagstone stepping stones, and

    wrought iron fencing.

The covered porch, coupled with all of the outdoor touches on

the ground and around the perimeter of the home, happily offers

an easy escape when some much-needed rest and relaxation is

    on the agenda.

What used to be just simply an uncovered deck is now a livable

space, emphasized the president. The homeowners can enjoy

using it year-round, using the fireplace with a blower motor on it in

the cooler months and the ceiling fan in the warmer months.

Making Under-Deck GutteringStylish and FunctionalFor a deck that comes out on top,

its what underneath it that counts!

Sometimes you dont realize you need or want something until you discover it

exists. That just might be the case with the amazing creations of Dry Deck Ceilings:

beautiful, rainproof under-deck ceilings, also known as under-deck guttering. If

your home has a deck with patio or storage space below, this could prove to be

a fantastic addition to your outdoor living area. The aesthetic value is undeniable,

considering these ceilings vanish the unfinished raw lumber overhead and the

accumulation of dirt streaks, algae and bird/wasp nests. The ceiling also keeps all

the nasty drip-through off of your patio furnishings or hot tub or grill. Plus, you can

enjoy your clean, finished-looking outdoor space even in rainy weather.

Dry Deck Ceilings operates primarily in the Kansas City metro area but has

installed ceilings as far away as the Lake of the Ozarks. Owner Al Adriance is

nearing his 100th under-deck ceiling installation and could certainly write the book

on this system at this point. However, he describes his learning curve as both

    brutal and challenging.

There wasnt any book on it when I started, literally, he emphasized. Much

of what I learned from others on installing these ceilings I had to un-learn. Early

on, I heard many sad stories from other contractors who had tried to rig up an

under-deck ceiling to accommodate a customer. Once I got started at it, I quickly

found out the reason for all the sad stories.

Because of his keen attention to his craft and his eye for detail,

Adriance now routinely produces a stunning end result that makes a

deck look like a natural extension of the home, but he is quick to give

    credit where it is due.

I actually owe my customers in a big way, he explained. Im

continually figuring out new improvements but a huge amount of the

evolution of our product has come from my customers ideas.

So, what exactly is an under-deck ceiling? It is a rainproof, drip-proof

ceiling that is affixed to the underside of your deck, allowing you to

congregate, socialize and relax on the patio beneath your deck, no

matter the elements outside, keeping you and your patio furnishings

clean and dry. Made of .032 thick aluminum panels that are available

in 27 colors, they are resistant to rust and are of the heaviest gauge

used in the under-deck ceiling industry. Each Dry Deck Ceiling

installation comes with a warranty on materials and workmanship that

is valid for as long as your deck frame boards (joists) are still intact.

Adriance could best be described as the most experienced

under-deck ceiling installer in the metro area and he attends to each

project with the utmost of attention to detail and perfection.

I love creating big, positive effects, and these ceilings do that every

time, he smiled. I custom-make low-profile gutters that resemble trim

instead of slapping up a tacky looking piece of plain eaves gutter.

The final overall appeal of an under-deck ceiling is also related to the

trim work, around the sides of the ceiling, around the stairs and around

    any beams.

An under-deck ceiling completely alters the look of a space, taking it

from a routine deck to an eye-catching work of art that is ultra-finished.

My clients never fully anticipate what it will look like until they see the

finished product, and then they are amazed, emphasized Adriance.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence for the viability of Adriances

ceilings is that they dont leak. Hes perfected his system regarding not

just the visual element appeal, but also the mechanics of it. So his

under-deck ceilings mean less maintenance on the patio furniture that

    sits under the deck.

Additionally, with a Dry Deck Ceiling, you can confidently put up an

outdoor flat screen TV, sit back and watch your favorite show, remaining

dry while enjoying the great outdoors. Adriance can also add ceiling

fans and/or LED ceiling lights, enhancing the warmth of the space.

If you are considering livening up your deck and making the most

of that space both above and below, then consider installing a

Dry Deck Ceiling from a well-established company that is readily

available to meet your needs and that has a solid system in place for

    precise installation, as is Adriances.

Adriance expressed, Im excited to see what the future holds for

this fledgling industry. Its easy for me to meet increasing demand.

    HUMMING ALONG

    Creating aHummingbird Haven

    Tiny Bird, Big Purpose

After youve created an impeccablehummingbird habitat, all youhave left to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the wondersof these tiny birds.

  • You can cook directly on the grates of your gas or charcoal

grill, but honestly, a proper grate or basket on top of the grill

makes things so much easier. I just Googled seafood grates

for grilling and found 6 under $20 in 15 seconds, so you have

    no excuses.

Make sure to start with a clean grate, then apply some

vegetable oil with a rag to prevent the food from sticking.

Have the proper utensils at your disposal tongs if youre

doing shrimp and a nice long, sturdy spatula for fish.

For gas and charcoal grills alike, let the grill get super hot

before putting the food on. Most seafood will cook quickly

with just one turn over high heat, but if youve got something

thicker, like swordfish or tuna, you might consider turning

the heat down after putting the fish on the grill or moving it

to a cooler area in the case of charcoal. This will prevent

a finished product thats burnt on the outside but raw in

    the middle.

Turn the fish only once, and only when its cooked at least

halfway through. I know its tempting, but Ive had many a

chef tell me the fastest way to ruin a good piece of seafood

is by messing with it. Think of it this way, the more you flip

the fish, the more likely it is to start falling apart.

A good rule-of-thumb is ten minutes of cooking over

medium hot coals or a medium hot gas grill for each 1-inch

of thickness. Thinner fish, fillets, or shrimp cook much faster,

    so beware.

So, there you have it. Check out this story on

for some great grilled seafood recipesalong with an easy, breezy summertime cocktail to help wash

it all down. As for me, its time to get that shrimp up to temp,

fire up the grill, and get dinner on the table.

Thats a four-letter word with which no one wants to makefriends, but the Institute of Medicine reports that 100 million

people in the United States suffer from chronic pain, and

supporting research of that phenomena suggests this costs the

American population an estimated 515 million workdays each

year, generating nearly 40 million visits to physicians annually. That

also equates to approximately $100 billion per year in lost work

    time and health care expenses.

Typically speaking, when someone is dealing with chronic pain,

they will usually turn to treatments such as prescription painkillers,

which often prove to be an inadequate measure by which to treat

the pain. However, a recent FDA-approved device that has been

used in Europe and Australia for the past seven years is showing

promising results with respect to treating chronic pain.

Dr. Constantine Fotopoulos, a specialist in interventional spine

and sports medicine at Dickson-Diveley Midwest Orthopaedic

Clinics, is one of only 300 physicians in the United States who

has been specifically appointed by St. Jude Medical, Inc., a

global medical device company and international leader in the

development of therapies for the treatment of chronic pain, to be

trained with the use of the newly approved St. Jude Medical

Axium Neurostimulator System. Clinically described, this system

targets the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), a spinal structure densely

populated with sensory nerves that transit information to the brain

via the spinal cord. This device allows for spinal stimulation that

can target specific areas of the body where pain occurs.

With this brand new device, physicians can provide effective pain

relief to patients with certain neuropathic conditions that otherwise

might not be achieved by traditional spinal cord stimulations.

This is an ideal procedure for someone who has tried numerous

treatment options yet has failed to obtain sufficient pain relief.

The perfect candidate for this procedure is someone who is

experiencing unrelieved pain from such conditions as previous

knee surgery; pain after knee replacement surgery; unresolved

pain issues from foot and ankle surgeries; post-hernia pain or

hip replacement surgery, noted Dr. Fotopoulos. This procedure

allows localized stimulation, treating complex regional pain

syndrome, also known as sympathetic dystrophy.

The DRG is a small bundle of nerves responsible for transmitting pain message to the

brain, controlling when sensations can enter your spinal cord. Every vertebra in the spine

    has a DRG.

Through the use of DRG stimulation, leads are implanted under the skin in the spine.

Mild electrical impulses are sent to the area of a DRG within the spine, which allows the

DRG to block pain signals from traveling to the brain from that specific

area. As a result, instead of the sensation of pain, a patient may sense

either a slight tingling feeling or the complete absence of pain.

Procedurally, this device is easily navigated by a trained physician. A

lead is implanted on the nerve that is attached to the DRG through

which the electrical impulses are sent, powered by a battery

that is also implanted beneath the skin. Much like

a spinal cord stimulator, it is operated by a

    rechargeable battery and is implanted

through a device that goes through the

skin. DRG stimulation can be directed to

certain areas from which the pain is felt.

DRG simulation aids in reducing effects

from problems such as continued pain

after a total knee or hip replacement,

    post-amputation pain, pain after hernia

repair and complex regional pain syndrome.

It should be noted, however, that this type of

stimulation is not promoted as a cure for the source of

pain, as pain reduction varies by individual. Most patients, however,

experience at least a 50% reduction in pain, with some studies showing

as high as 90% reduction in pain.

Done on an out-patient basis under light intravenous sedation in

typically under an hour, an initial trial procedure is first required.

Patients may realize minor post-surgical pain but can expect to return

to their normal routine almost immediately.

    The use of the stimulator can result in decreased pharmaceutical requirements;

less side effects; and additionally offers more long-term pain control. With both two and

five-year data reports published, the company behind the device has reported upwards of

    an 80% success rate.

After researching all of the data, I am excited to offer it to my patients, expressed Dr.

Fotopoulos. In all rights, it should nearly abolish the rare and severe pain seen after knee

replacement surgeries. Bear in mind, it is not the norm to have pain (in this regard) but it

is common. Further, no single device helps everyone, as pain is subjective.

By having the opportunity to offer this therapy to his patients, Dr. Fotopoulos now has

a more expansive portfolio of treatment options for patients suffering from a wide range of

    chronic pain conditions.

Sure, you could do in-office cryotherapy to stun the nerves, but this procedure is

definitely the hammer. It has a significant positive outcome and is truly impressive, noted

    Dr. Fotopoulos.
