Announcements
The KCWPTP Steering Committee recommended current videos for KIDS be
placed on a DVD and a copy be made available to each DCF office. New
employees can conveniently watch the videos and have time to process the
information prior to meeting with their regional trainer for the remainder of the
KIDS training. Early viewing will also benefit conversations between new staff
and supervisors. KIPS training will continue as an instructor-led training.
Regional trainers are available to help guide new employees through their
training requirements as needed.
Facilitated Discussions are bi-weekly opportunities for new child welfare
staff to talk over relevant work matters and glean insights from
experienced staff. Facilitated by Prevention and Protection Services (PPS)
trainers, alongside experienced staff, new workers can discuss real situations and
practical solutions regarding topics:
• Ethics and confidentiality
• Worker safety
• Meeting with resistance
• Time management NEW!
• Self-care
• Safety and risk assessment
• Active case review
New employees are required to
complete two of these trainings: Meeting with Resistance and Worker Safety, prior
to taking a caseload. The remaining Facilitated Discussions must be completed
within six-months of hire.
DCF staff can enroll through the DCF Training Center or the KCWPTP web

KCWPTP Updates
PPS began the Mastering the Art of Supervision
training series as a pilot for supervisors in
October 2017. This series contains seven
modules that will be delivered approximately
every four-six weeks in 2018.
Module 3: Building the Foundation for Staff
Performance
This course facilitates the development of the
supervisory skills necessary to successfully
manage staff performance, addressing
development of relationships, performance
expectations, practical standards, evaluating
performance effectiveness, characteristics of
effective feedback and motivating staff to perform.
Module 4: Promoting Growth and
Development of Staff
This module focuses on the supervisor helping
workers to understand the job and developing
staff competence to complete critical functions.
This module assists the supervisor in
understanding various learning styles while
increasing transfer of learning and general
aspects of management .
Mastering the Art of Supervision CORE Training—Module 3
PPS attorneys have diligently worked to modify
Core Module 3 from a two-day training to a one
-day training. Revisions to this one-day training
are being finalized and are slated to be
available for the Module 3 training on March 14,
2018, in Chanute. DCF regional attorneys will
provide this training with an increased capacity
for up to 50 participants, making it convenient
for staff to make up any missed Module 3
sessions. Visit the KCWPTP web calendar for
upcoming available course dates and times.
Phase II of Play-Based Interaction (PBI) trainings
are underway for KVC Kansas and Saint Francis
Community Services (SFCS), and will continue
through May 2018. Dr. Todd Fry and Rebeca
Chow, from Mid-America Nazarene University,
specialize in childhood development and play
therapy and will facilitate these trainings. This
training provides social workers with six DSM
CEU hours and trauma-reducing engagement
techniques for children coming into foster care. A
suitcase filled with toys, especially identified for
engagement, is provided for each office receiving
children to coincide with this training.

Learning experiences are like
journeys. The journey starts
where the learning is now,
and ends when the learner is
successful. The end of the
journey isn’t knowing more,
it’s doing more.
