KCWPTP Updates

PPS began the Mastering the Art of Supervision

training series as a pilot for supervisors in

October 2017. This series contains seven

modules that will be delivered approximately

every four-six weeks in 2018.

Module 3: Building the Foundation for Staff

Performance

This course facilitates the development of the

supervisory skills necessary to successfully

manage staff performance, addressing

development of relationships, performance

expectations, practical standards, evaluating

performance effectiveness, characteristics of

effective feedback and motivating staff to perform.

Module 4: Promoting Growth and

Development of Staff

This module focuses on the supervisor helping

workers to understand the job and developing

staff competence to complete critical functions.

This module assists the supervisor in

understanding various learning styles while

increasing transfer of learning and general

aspects of management .

Mastering the Art of Supervision CORE Training—Module 3

PPS attorneys have diligently worked to modify

Core Module 3 from a two-day training to a one

-day training. Revisions to this one-day training

are being finalized and are slated to be

available for the Module 3 training on March 14,

2018, in Chanute. DCF regional attorneys will

provide this training with an increased capacity

for up to 50 participants, making it convenient

for staff to make up any missed Module 3

sessions. Visit the KCWPTP web calendar for

upcoming available course dates and times.

Phase II of Play-Based Interaction (PBI) trainings

are underway for KVC Kansas and Saint Francis

Community Services (SFCS), and will continue

through May 2018. Dr. Todd Fry and Rebeca

Chow, from Mid-America Nazarene University,

specialize in childhood development and play

therapy and will facilitate these trainings. This

training provides social workers with six DSM

CEU hours and trauma-reducing engagement

techniques for children coming into foster care. A

suitcase filled with toys, especially identified for

engagement, is provided for each office receiving

children to coincide with this training.

Play-Based Interactions

Welcoming the KCWPTP Contract Trainers Polly Hawkins Freeman is an LMSW, who

received her bachelor’s and master’s in social work

from Wichita State University. Currently living in

Wichita, Polly provides case management services

assists families who have special needs children

with behavioral supports and other services.

Polly has served in several

roles as a social worker. She

worked as a foster care worker,

supervisor and recruiter, as

well as a treatment supervisor

for Youthville. Prior to that, she

worked as a family services

worker for then-Social and

Rehabilitation Services (SRS).

She presently serves as a

parent advocate with Families

Together. Her other

experiences include trainer, volunteer and foster

parent.

Michelle Warner is an LMSW, graduating with a

bachelor’s in social work from Fort Hays State

University, and a master’s in social work from

Washburn University. She is currently employed

with Adopt KS Kids/Kansas Children’s Service

League. Her duties include preparing families for

the adoption of children who are in the State’s

custody and seeking an

adoption resource.

Michelle enjoys community

service work with Kansas

Guardianship Programs;

serving as a Court Appointed

Guardian. In this role, she

advocates on behalf of the

individual to ensure all quality-

of-life needs are met and

exceeded. She also served as

a court-appointed special

Advocate for Sunflower Project CASA, Inc. Michelle

has also completed the TIPS-MAPP Leader

Training as well as BRI@PRactioner Training.

Learning experiences are like

journeys. The journey starts

where the learning is now,

and ends when the learner is

successful. The end of the

journey isn’t knowing more,

it’s doing more.
