Kalmar Werkstätten

Kalmar Werkstätten celebrates the historic lighting manufacture Kalmar. Since the project’s launch in 2009, Kalmar Werkstätten has issued designs based on drawings found in the Kalmar archives and selected for today’s residential and commercial interiors. Specifically these lamps, chandeliers, and sconces spotlight the Secession and Wiener Werkstätten, movements in which the company was intimately involved, thanks to working relationships second-generation owner Julius Theodor Kalmar had established with the great talents including Josef Hoffmann and Josef Frank. They rediscover Austrian modernism’s directness of form, honest expression of industry and craftsmanship, and dedication to time-honored materials - and are contempo-rary heirlooms in their own right.

Collaborating with a choice group of emerging and established talent, Kalmar Werk-stätten is releasing light fixtures whose designs are chosen from the Kalmar archive and adapted for today’s residential and commercial interiors.

Kalmar Werkstätten

Kalmar Werkstätten, eine Marke der Firma Kalmar, brachte vor kurzem eine Reedi-tion ausgewählter Entwürfe auf den Markt, die auf wiederentdeckten Zeichnungen des Kalmar Archives beruhen. Die Stehleuchten, Wandleuchten und Pendelleuchten spiegeln die Zeit der Sezession und die Ära der Wiener Werkstätten wider. Damals bewegte sich Julius Theodor Kalmar, der Sohn des Gründers Julius August Kalmar, im Umfeld des Wiener Werkbundes, dessen Ideen er umsetzte, und pflegte Kontakt mit Wegbereitern der Moderne wie Josef Frank und Josef Hoffmann.

Die Entwürfe wurden mit einer Reihe von etablierten und aufstrebenden Designern neu interpretiert und erwecken die Klarheit der Form und den Ausdruck hochste-hender Handwerkskunst des österreichischen Modernismus zu neuem Leben. Die detailgenaue Verarbeitung und der kunstfertige Umgang mit hochwertigen Materi-alien machen die Objekte der Werkstätten Kollektion zu zeitgemässen Objekten mit designgeschichtlichem Erbe.

Fliegenbein SL Standing Lamp

The Fliegenbein SL Standing Lamp is the most recent addition to the Fliegenbein family, expand-ing the character and functional applications of the range. The new luminaire revises the propor-tions of the original Fliegenbein BL, with a truncated overall height and an elongated shade. The effect is of a lantern: the design’s signature bent legs now peek out from under a silken pleated expanse that emits intimate, diffuse light. By pairing a modest size with bold visual gesture, Fliegenbein SL makes an inviting companion to an armchair or lounge. Its tubular steel may be finished in light and dark gray or brown matte lacquer, and the electrical cord is wheat-colored.

Fliegenbein TL Table Lamp

Fliegenbein TL translates Julius T. Kalmar’s 1957 floor lamp of the same name for a table environ-ment. Like the original, the smaller product features two bent metal tubes merging into a single shaft. A pleated silken shade suspends near the top of this steel column, which is painstakingly finished in light and dark gray or brown matte lacquers. Fliegenbein is a versatile addition to both modern and transitional interior environments, and the three available colorways adapt the composition for industrial or organic design schemes.

Posthorn features a charming polished-nickel or polished brass loop-de-loop terminating in natural silk shades, which emit ambient light in all directions. Hase TL Table Lamp

J.T. Kalmar created Hase by bending simple tubular metal and finishing it in polished brass. The table lamp assumes a more anthropomorphic quality than the floor model from which it is derived. In both cases, the naturally colored electrical cord blends in with Hase’s canted lines. A leather grip permits easy repositioning across a desk or side table, where Hase provides di-rectional and ambient light.

Kilo comprises a milled cylinder of blackened solid steel and a silken shade, linked by a slender tube finished in polished nickel or brass. The pairing of small base and large shade seems to defy rules of balance, yet, standing 55.5 centimeters high, the table lamp is a counterpoint to the delightful precariousness of the floor-lamp design. Its appearance of greater stability makes this luminaire suitable for console tables and other delicate surfaces, particularly in areas that would benefit from ambient illumination.

An accompaniment to the Keule 1 and 5 pendant luminaires. The Keule wall light comprises a milled wall plate with an affixed rectangular bracket finished in black bronze or matt black lacquer, from which the luminaire unit is suspended. The proprietary black cord permits height adjustment to a maximum of 90 cm.

Dreistelz Floor Lamp

J.T. Kalmar conceived Dreistelz as the freestanding counterpart to his line of suspended lumi-naires: Slim tubing rests atop an organic tripod of legs, and it is fitted with a slightly oversize natural-silk shade. Confident in Dreistelz’s chameleon-like ability to complement and elevate any modern living environment, Kalmar finished the floor lamp in polished nickel and polished brass. It also features the proprietary black cord that identifies the Kalmar Werkstätten brand.

This freestanding luminaire from 1947 exemplifies Wiener Werkbund criteria. By threading the saber-shaped stand through the lamp shade, designers J.T. Kalmar and A. Pöll melded form as well as function—the stand allows the lamp shade to be positioned at three different, read-er-friendly heights. The hardwood stand and handle may be finished in a satin matt red or black lacquer, or left in a natural state with a protective oil or wax coating. The base reflects the lightness of the floor lamp as a whole; all metal parts can be finished in black bronze, polished nickel, or matt black lacquer.
