Archaeologists consider the Olmecs to be one of only six “pristine” civilizations: these

were cultures that developed on their own without the benefit of

migration or influence from some other civilization.

Page 7: Kabihasnang Olmec

The Olmecs were able to make several sorts of tools which made their life easier. They used whatever was at hand, such as clay, stone, bone, wood or deer antlers.

They were skilled at making pottery: vessels and plates used for storing and cooking food. Clay pots and vessels were extremely common among the Olmec

The Olmecs were expert farmers and practiced a type of farming known as

slash-and-burn farming

They planted many of the same crops seen in the region today, such as

squash, beans, manioc, sweet potatoes and

tomatoes. Maize was a staple of the Olmec diet,

Mga Diyos ng Olmec

Archaeologist Peter Joralemon has identified eight gods • Olmec Dragon• Bird Monster• Fish Monster• Banded-eye God• Water God• Maize God• Were-jaguar • Feathered Serpent

Some of these gods would remain in Mesoamerican

mythology with other cultures: the Maya and

the Aztecs both had feathered serpent gods

STATUES Twins were an essential heroic part

of Mesoamerican religion. What part the heroic twins played in

Olmec religion is unknown, but in the

Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, two

heroic sets of twins journey to the

underworld to do battle with the lords

there.

Evidences of Trade

• Objects from other regions, such as jadeite from present-day Guatemala and obsidian from the more mountainous regions of Mexico, have been discovered in Olmec sites.

• Olmec objects, such as figurines, statues and celts, have been found in sites of other cultures contemporary to the Olmec
