Rudolf Koch was a calligrapher and a type designer born in 1876. He became an engraver at a metal foundry and trained to

be an art teacher from 1896 - 1897. The Klingspor Foundry hired Koch as a type designer where he would work for the

majority of his career.

He developed a large number of typefaces including

Mazimillian Antiqua, Neuland, Kabel, Jessen, Marathon, Holla, Neufraktur and the like. He died

at 1934.

Kabel preserves elements of the Roman alphabet, as well as an expressionist

influence. It is a balance between traditional and modern influences seen across many of

Koch’s typefaces. It is characterised by angular strokes which resembles shapes in geometry. This effect gives it motion and makes it an effective headline typeface.

This is the main inspiration of the

typeface. This was a school in Germany

famous for important designs. The most

important influence of modernism despite

conservatism.

The notable development was the re-proportioning of letters rather than using a set of uniform widths. It is the link between early sans

serif and its contemporary. It’s

variations are light, book, heavy and ultra weight.

Kabel was created in 1927 for the Klingspor

Foundry. It is a sans serif typeface inspired by

German Expressionism. The geometric form and multi-linear compositions an ode to the telephone

cable which had just been finished.
