Synthetic Marijuana is created by spraying synthetic cannabinoids on legal herbs to create a product that, when smoked or drunk as a tea, causes mood-altering effects similar to marijuana.

Page 4: K2/Spice Drug Trends 2011

HU-210 is a synthetic cannabinoid that was first synthesized in 1988 by a group led by Professor Raphael Mechoulam at Hebrew Univesity.

HU-210 is 100 to 800 times more potent than natural THC from cannabis and has an extended duration of action.

HU-210 is a Schedule 1 Drug

Huffman first obtained the NIDA grant in 1984, which ultimately totaled $2,564,000, when the government asked him to synthesize the human metabolite of THC.

In the 1990s, NIDA asked him to switch gears, and either develop medicine or study the "cannabinoid receptors" in the brain, which respond to marijuana.

Huffman created nearly 450+ "cannabinoids" that affect the brain in a much more powerful way than THC, the active component in marijuana.

Dr. John Huffman, a Clemson University organic chemistry professor, was researching the effects of cannabinoids on the brain when his work resulted in a 1995 paper that contained the method and ingredients used to make the compound.

That recipe found its way to marijuana users, who

replicated Huffman's work and began spraying it onto dried flowers, herbs and tobacco

One of the men who created the chemical, Dr. John W. Huffman says he never intended for people to ingest it.

Huffman released this statement: "People who smoke K2 are idiots.”

But, said Huffman, given the dangers of the chemicals, anybody show smokes them "is incredibly foolish."

"They're playing Russian roulette," he said. "I mean, it's just like taking a pistol with one bullet in it and spinning the chamber and holding it to your head and pulling the trigger."

What is there to worry about?

Page 14: K2/Spice Drug Trends 2011

The Synthetic Cannabinoid is an Agonist

An Agonist binds to a receptor of a cell and triggers a response by that cell.

The brain is tricked into thinking it is ingesting THC

Increases dopamine in the brain.

Synthetic Cannabinoids bind to the receptors in the users brain, like a key fitting into a lock.

JWH-018 & JWH-073 are better keys so it takes less of K2 to get high.

1978 Alaska legalized marijuana for adult use,

Teen use increased to twice that of any other state.

In 1994 Alaskan voters overturned this failed experiment.

Page 35: K2/Spice Drug Trends 2011

Overall drug use is down by more than 1/3 in the last 20 yrs,

While cocaine use has dropped by an astounding 70%

95% of Americans do not use drugs. This is success by any standards.

Illegal drugs are illegal because they are harmful.

Smoked marijuana is not scientifically approved medicine. Marinol, the legal version of medical marijuana, is approved by science, prescribed by a licensed physician.

National Forests in California are prime areas for illicit marijuana grow operations.

“Barrels of pesticides and herbicides can spill into the groundwater system, especially after a wildfire, and growers leave trash, gasoline and other camping equipment lying around while they spend weeks tending to their crop,” said Lt. Joe Nunez of the sheriff’s narcotics bureau.
