Acts 2-3; Matt. 6:33

I’m In: Team

God calls his family to work as a team.

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes) : Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes) : Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

As kids come in, talk to them about weekly things they do and different groups they’re part of. Then they’ll be ready to talk about what it means to be on a “team.”

As kids get picked up, encourage them to tell their families about the friend they wrote or drew a picture of in Large Group (the person that they want to join on God’s team!)

We’re talking about “team” and how we’re a team with the rest of God’s family (which is the Church). Kids are a part of lots of teams like sports, dance, or even just playgroups! Help them understand the concept of “team” by giving them examples they can relate to.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear. SPIDERS AND FLIES *Play this as a whole group.

• Choose one kid to be the spider; the rest are flies. • Play tag, but like this: the spider is going to try to catch a fly. Every fly that the

spider catches becomes part of its web, holding hands with the spider and trying to catch the remaining flies. Each fly that is caught holds on to the chain and helps catch more flies.

• The last player to be caught becomes the new spider. TALK ABOUT IT *Break into the small groups you’ll be in after Large Group.

• Once you were part of the web, what did you try to do to other kids? • Did you work by yourselves, or together? • Are you a part of any teams? (not just sports teams, but any kind of group of

people) Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand what it means to be part of God’s team, (2) identify their teammates and (3) discuss ways they can share Jesus with the world Why? As God’s family, we have a BIG call to action. It’s important to know that we are in this with others who love Jesus and ready to fight for something larger than ourselves. Tip: Sharing Jesus with the world means telling people who he is, but it also means living a life like Jesus did. This is helpful when teaching kids about sharing Jesus, because sometimes they may not know how to talk about Jesus, but they can act like him!

REVIEW THE STORY 1. What does it mean to be a team? (work together for a certain goal) 2. What’s the most important team that we’re a part of? (God’s team) 3. What is the goal of God’s team/family? (sharing Jesus with the WORLD) 4. How did Peter and his friends work as a team to share Jesus? (They told people

about Jesus, did miracles, healed people, helped people, etc.) 5. How can sharing Jesus be hard work? (face being made of, maybe persecution,

means we have to love and obey God even when we don’t feel like it, etc.) 6. What ways could you share Jesus with your friends? (Help come up with answers

like inviting friends to Kids’ Club, helping people and being kind, praying for our friends, etc.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL: WOULD YOU RATHER?

• Cut off a piece of yarn (about 5 feet) and stick it on the floor where your small group is seated.

• Tell kids that they’ll be choosing from two options you give. Demonstrate that if you want to choose the first option, you’ll join THIS team (motion to one side of the tape) and if you choose the second option, you’ll join THIS team (motion to the other side of the tape.)

• For example, you say, “Would you rather be on a team that eats chocolate ice cream (motion to the left side) or vanilla ice cream (motion to the right side)?

• Have kids start at a designated starting point before each choice, then return to that starting point after each choice.

• Choices to give kids are on the following page.

• Would you rather be on a team that…

o Pets snakes or pets spiders? o Swims or runs? o Is super strong or super fast? o Swims or runs? o Plays basketball or baseball? o Eats a live bug, or a dead worm? o Has the ability to fly, or is invisible? o Eats pizza or hot dogs? o Is in a pool of marshmallows or a pool of M&M’s?

• Now do some options that are more geared toward what they learned about in Large Group: Would you rather be on a team that…

o Prays for your friends, or doesn’t pray for your friends? o Invites people to Kids’ Club, or doesn’t mention Kids’ Club to anybody o Never talks to friends about Jesus, or talks to friends about Jesus all the time? o Helps people, or ignores people who need help? o Seeks God first, or seeks God last? o Wants God’s team to be big, or wants God’s team to be small?

• After you’re finished, wrap up in prayer, or have a kid pray for the group. Give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, pick volunteers to come up with more “would you rather” scenarios for the group, and play again!

The Response Activity is interactive today. Plan ahead to make sure you have the large, tear-off sheet of paper and markers ready to go!

Are you a part of a team? Tell kids about it during today’s script! They’ll love to hear about the kind of team that a grown up is a part of, and it will help to personalize today’s lesson even more.

*Click to play intro music WELCOME AND INTRO Hey everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. We’re so glad to have you here. That game we just played was pretty fun, wasn’t it? Who started out as a spider? (Let kids respond.) Who started out as fly? (Let kids respond.) Who was part of the spider web by the end of the game? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, you were ALL part of the spider’s web! Let’s all make a spider’s web again! Stay seated, but everybody hold the hand of the people next to you. (Let kids respond.) Good job! Now, since we’re all connected in one giant spider web, we’re all going to do something together, while holding hands. First, let’s all wave our hands in the air. (Let kids respond.) Great, now let’s stand up and hop! (Let kids respond.) Okay, sit back down. Now, let’s reach up as high as you can! (Let kids respond.) Good job everybody, you can let go now. WHAT IS A TEAM? When we all work together to do something, that means we’re part of a team! We’re a group of people who help each other to do something special. There are lots of kinds of teams, and they all do different things together. I want everybody to close your eyes and think really hard about a team that you might be a part of. It could be any kind of team, or group, that you’re a part of. Maybe a baseball team, or a dance group, or you’re in a play! (Let kids respond.) Got it? Now, I need 3 volunteers to come up front. (Pick 3 kids.) Okay, each one of you is going to silently act out what you do on your team, and the rest of us will try to guess what it is. Ready? (Let each volunteer act out their team, while the rest of the room tries to guess what it is.) Good job guys, great acting! Can you all give our volunteers a hand? (Let kids respond.) A team is a group of people that work together to do something special. Now that we’ve talked

about some different kinds of teams, let’s talk about the most important team in the world! GOD’S FAMILY IS A TEAM You know what the best team is that we can all be a part of? God’s family! When we choose to follow Jesus, we become part of God’s special family! That means we’re his team. Take a minute and look around: these people are your teammates! (Let kids look.) Everybody give one of your teammates a high five. (Let kids respond.) Since we’re all a part of God’s team, we all have a goal. A goal is something special that we all want to accomplish. What do you think our goal is as part of God’s team? (Might be tough but let kids respond.) Yep, our goal is show God’s love to everyone we can! Do you think we can show God’s love to…our friends? (Let kids respond.) Can we show God’s love to…people we don’t know very well? (Let kids respond.) Can we even show God’s love to…people who aren’t nice to us? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, we can show God’s love to everyone. PETER AND GOD’S EARLY TEAM God sent a rescuer to save us from all the wrong things in the world; do you know his name? (Let kids respond, “Jesus!”) That’s right, Jesus! Jesus rescued all of us, and he gave us the special job of sharing the news of his rescue so that more and MORE people would want to follow him. In fact, he wanted us to tell the whole WORLD. If you think that sharing Jesus with the WHOLE world is BIG goal, give me a thumbs up! (Let kids respond.) You’re right, it’s the biggest, most important goal we could ever have! In the Bible, there was a guy named Peter, and he helped God’s team a lot. (Click to show a picture of Peter) He was one of the first followers of Jesus. He and his teammates worked really hard to tell the world about Jesus. We’re going to watch a video about it. As you watch, see if you can figure out what things this team did to share the good news and love of Jesus. Video: God’s Story / Peter and the Other Believers So what kinds of things did this team do? (Let kids say: used the power of the Holy Spirit; stuck together and did things like eat, pray and worship together; showed people what it looked like to love and take care of each other; healed people; praised Jesus even when people treated them badly; were willing to suffer). You’re right! Peter and his friends did all of those things to share Jesus with the world. Sometimes, it meant they had to suffer, and go through hard things. It was probably hard for them. But guess what? They had the Holy Spirit to help. God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us follow him. The Holy Spirit can help us, comfort us, and protect us. He helps us be a stronger part of God’s team! RESPONSE TIME Every single one of us is an important part of God’s team, no matter if we’re a kid or a grown up! God wants to use us to help share Jesus with the world. Right now, we’re each going to

come up with a way to do that! Go ahead and close your eyes, and be quiet for a minute. I want you to think of one specific person that you want to be on God’s team. It could be a friend, or someone you don’t know very well. Maybe it’s someone who’s alone a lot at school, or someone you want to bring to Kids’ Club. (Give kids 30 seconds to a minute to silently think. Large tear off sheet of paper should be laid out on stage area or on floor.) Now that you’ve all pictured that person in your head, I want you to get a marker and write their name or draw a picture of them on this big piece of paper we have! (Let kids write and draw.) (Hold up the paper for kids to see.) Wow! This is amazing. These are all people who we want to be part of God’s team. Do you think we could share more of Jesus’ love if God’s team is smaller, or bigger? (Let kids respond, “Bigger!”) That’s right, we always want to add more people to God’s team. Let’s look at the verse we’ve been learning. It’s all about how our team will have everything we need, if we just seek God first! Let’s all read this together. (Lead kids in slowly reading the verse out loud.) SLIDE: Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.   I think we can read it even louder! Let’s all try it one more time. (Lead kids in saying the verse again, this time even louder. Then wrap up in prayer.) WORSHIP Being a part of God’s team means that we can worship him together! Let’s all stand up and sing some songs to God, to show him how much we love him.
