KENMURE COUNTRY CLUB GOURMET WINE DINNER Wednesday, June 6th, 2018
What would you call a project which brings the world’s foremost highly-acclaimed winemakers to one place, builds them a singular winery, and has each make their signature wines using solely local vineyards? “Brilliant”…”unique”.. ”extraordinary” all come to mind!! Well: that is exactly what Allan Shoup did after his 20-year stint as CEO of The Stimson Lane Wine Group (Chateau St. Michelle, Columbia Crest, etc.). He pursued a vision: a joint venture of the world’s greatest winemakers from different regions creating their signature wines using Washington State, specifically Columbia Valley, grapes. Each winemaker is a true on-site partner, sharing in a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in the Columbia Valley. The Long Shadows project, a tribute to this select group who shape the wine industry, was born!! Each of the wines from this project receives well-over 90 points each vintage and the array of wines runs from Riesling to Merlot to Sangiovese to Syrah to Cabernet. to…well… you get it!! We are indeed very fortunate to not only have The Long Shadows Project wines at our June 6th Gourmet Wine Dinner, but are truly honored to have a rare appearance at this type of event by the Project’s Chief Winemaker, Gilles Nicault, who has served in this capacity since The Project’s inception in 2003!! He has been recognized as Winemaker of the Year and is considered to be in the top echelon of world-acclaimed winemakers. We look forward to welcoming an old friend and super guest sommelier to accompany these truly unique wines!! We look forward to greeting y’all and sharing great food, great wines, and great friendships!!
CARPE VINUM!!
Sam Ritter, KCC Sommelier
SERVICE CHARGE FOR TO-GO ORDERS IMPLEMENTED
In February 2018, the Board of Governors approved an 18% gratuity service charge for all To-Go orders. Unfortunately, our P.O.S. software system would not allow the service charge. As will all service charges, the To-Go fee will go directly to our waitstaff.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.

MGA NEWS Chip Pryde
The spring weather got off to a great start. We had good weather for play since our opening day in
April until we didn’t. We had been able to avoid the thunderstorms and heavy rains until the middle of month
when we endured several days of rain and a cancellation of the scheduled match.
We played at Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg SC on April 26 as the first match of our home and home
series that Luke Lovell arranged for us. The participants had a great day of golf. There were two levels of
competition. We played a four man team contest with 2 players from each club and there is the overall club
scoring that will be decided after the second match to be played August 16 at Kenmure. The Kenmure
players on the 1st place team were John Buntin and Larry McGaughy. 2nd place team members were Michael
Shannon and Zack Johnson. Michael Shannon won a closest to the pin prize on the 12th hole. Carolina CC is
ahead in the first round of the club competition.
On May 3 we played a 4 person team net best ball with over format match in two flights. Flight 1 winning
team was Doug Blankman, Rob Freeman, Fred Balling and David Niehoff. The flight 2 winners were Andy
Clapper, Boyd Honeycutt, Chuck Riecker and Bob Davidson.
Our President’s Cup opening round which is one of the MGA major tournaments was played on May 10 in five
flights. Advancing were the following.
Flight 1: Lee Morse Bill Pendergast Doug Blankman Peter Haft
Flight 2: Tommy Rascoe Mike Burke Andy Clapper Ron Masterman
Flight 3: Boyd Honeycutt Chip Pryde Don York Bob Paulsen
Flight 4: Al Pennington Colin Larsen Pete Dunderdale Terry Silvers
Flight 5: Frank Felsburg John Eskew Gene Snyder David Leiman
Final President’s Cup matches were scheduled for May 24 which will be reported on next month.
The game for May 17 was cancelled due to the wet weather and soggy golf course conditions.
The2018 interclub match schedule is as follows.
Green Valley Thursday May 31
Cliffs Keowee Springs Monday June 25
Kenmure Thursday August 23
Cliffs Valley Wednesday September 5
Remember, beginning this season the country club web site will have the entire updated calendar for the
2018 MGA season which will make it very convenient to plan ahead and then sign up on line or call the Pro
Shop. One of the MGA tournaments has gone by but there are three more plus the regular weekly matches
that we hope our members will be playing in.
I often remind our readers that we all have a responsibility to help keep our course in the great shape that is
the result of the hard work of our course maintenance team. Please continue to take the time to repair divots,
rake the traps and fix the ball marks on the greens. One additional item that will help all of us enjoy our day
out on the course is if all of us are mindful of pace of play. Lets not spend too long looking for balls or not
being ready to hit when it is our turn.

WGA MUSINGS Karen S. Skelton
Opening Day. 2002. 2003. 2004. 2007. 2008. 2011. And now 2018. Another Opening Day rained
out, but to date the weather has settled down and the last several WGA Tuesdays have been beautiful. Of course, now that it’s time for the Ringer, the forecast is for possible/probable rain, but until we see it, we’re plannin’ to play! And we’ve been playin’! On the 1st, the 9-holers played Individual Low Net. Flight 1 winner was Nancy Ticko; Flight 2 - Lisa Caudle; Flight 3 - Christina Thornton. The 18-holers played Individual Low Gross won by Diane Quackenbush, and Individual Low Net, Diane Gallagher. The following week both groups played 2 Net Best Balls for a 4-Person Team. The winning 9-hole team was Melissa Maybury, Donna Johnson, Pam Van Tassel, and Bonnie Niehoff. Nancy Ticko, Diane Quackenbush, Candace Lewis, and Gretchen Morse won for 18. Western Carolina WGA matches are underway. In the first match played at Cliffs Valley, Inger Berg won First Low Net in her flight and LaVonne McKay won Second Low Gross in hers. Our next match was played at Carolina Country Club (results not in yet), and Biltmore Forest is hosting in June. If you’d like to participate, please contact LaVonne McKay ([email protected]). Realizing that it seems as if we’ve just started the season, the WGA Mid-Season Lunch is on the calendar. On Tuesday, June 26, we’ll be playing 18-hole Captain’s Choice from the Glenroy tees, 9- and 18-holers combined. If you are new to WGA, this will give you an opportunity to meet the Who’s that? gals. Maybe you’ve never played from the Glenroy tees...it will be an experience! Just because it’s shorter doesn’t mean it’s easier. Come out of your comfort zone and join us! Lunch sounds wonderful:
chilled cantaloupe soup w/freshly baked rolls & butter summer salad with romaine, snap peas, roasted corn,
heirloom tomatoes, pickled onion, & creamy oregano vinaigrette topped with grilled chicken
lemon sorbet coffee/tea/water
If we had a To Do list, the following would be on it: Check with the Golf Shop for the topics of the weekly clinics ($10 per clinic, charged to your account); dig out the green towels lurking in the basket of your cart; sign/attest your Tuesday scorecard (Golf Shop will input scores). There’s also something to ponder: Why do we jump at the chance to sign up for our Tuesday tournaments but shy away from other tournaments? We pay to play on Tuesday, we have an opportunity to add to our Sweeps. It’s the same thing with other tournaments: We pay to play and have an opportunity to add to our Sweeps, but half the number of regular Tuesday players sign up for other tournaments. Why is that? Think about it and I’ll meet ya on the tee.
LADIES OF THE KWGA...we are very happy to announce that we have
finalized our plans for a Ladies Member Guest Tournament this year...
SAVE THE DATE WHEN: Wednesday, August 15th (with practice day on Tuesday August 14th)
If you can't find a guest, we'll do our best to find one for you!
So...stay tuned; we'll let you know when it's time to sign up.

LIFE AND GOLF IN BALANCELIFE AND GOLF IN BALANCE Wednesday, June 13, Charleston Room
5-6:30pm
Kenmure’s Women Golf Association (KWGA) is hosting a talk a by Charlotte McGinnis, a former LPGA teaching pro, on the mental aspects of golf titled, Life and Golf in Balance. We would like to invite all spouses and partners of KWGA women golfers and all MGA members who would also like to hear this experienced speaker.
Charlotte McGinnis was born in Huntington, West Virginia and was introduced to the game of golf at the age of 7. By the time Charlotte was 13 years old, she was recognized in West Virginia as a top golfer in the state and began competing in National tournaments at age 14.
After 2 years of playing on the women’s golf team at Marshall University, Charlotte decided to pursue her passion of becoming a professional and moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where she was an assistant professional at PGA National Golf Club. At this time, Charlotte competed on the Futures Golf Tour and other local professional events.
After competing at a professional level and winning a few mini tour events, she made a decision to become a golf instructor which led her to becoming a full-time teaching pro at Hunters Run in Boynton Beach, Florida in the winter and Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York in the summers. In 1988, Charlotte qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open which was an unexpected surprise as she was not playing or practicing on a regular basis due to her full teaching schedule. She left Hunters Run and was offered a teaching position at IBIS Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida where she remained until she made the decision to move to North Carolina in 2006.
She has since retired from golf due to injuries and other interest. However, her past experience includes several speaking series at IBIS where she would have audiences of 200 for an 8 week course.
We are pleased to present an interactive evening with Charlotte as she talks about how to think, practice and play effectively the game of golf.

RULE 24RULE 24RULE 24RULE 24----2b IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION2b IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION2b IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION2b IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION
The most common misunderstanding of the rules is how to take free relief from an immovable
obstruction such as a Cart Path. A Cart Path is considered an Immovable Obstruction.
Under Rule 24-2b Immovable Obstruction – If your ball lies on or near the cart path or when the
obstruction interferes with your stance or the area of intended swing you may take free relief –
you must determine the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole within one club length, and
the ball must be dropped.
Very Important = Before you take the relief you must do two very important things:
• Have 3 tees in your pocket to help mark the nearest point of relief.
• Tell your playing partners you are taking relief and ask the player who has your score card
to come over to witness the drop.

SPORTS NEWS
PICKLEBALL
Pickleball, a mixture of ping-pong, badminton and tennis, is sweeping the country and has become increasingly popular in Kenmure.
Kenmure now has about 18 regular, year-around players and several others who play on occasion. We play round-robin doubles starting at 9:00am on Saturday mornings and 4:00pm on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We usually play for about 90 minutes.
If you’re a KCC sports or golf member, we invite you to drop in and join the fun. Our current players will be more than willing to teach you the basics. Most newcomers find that it doesn’t take long to become reasonably adept.

TENNIS SOCIAL RAISES MONEY FOR
CANCER
Saturday morning, May 12, 22 men and women took to the courts to raise money to fight cancer and have a good time. They played five rounds of mixed doubles, caught up on what had happened over the winter and fortified themselves with delicious snacks.
That evening forty of us gathered on the patio for cocktails and dinner. After feasting on barBQ, the morning winners were announced. Susan Fogle took the trophy for the women with Judy McNellie in second place. Jim Mangold and Britt O'Gorman tied for first on the men's side.
Mark your calendars for the next social on July 28.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Louise Reid is organizing a Monday morning ladies tennis group. All are welcome to join. Please contact Louise at [email protected] for more info if you are interested.
