Legendary musician Joan Baez threw a spectacular 75 th birthday bash at New York’s historic Beacon Theatre in January, and invites NJTV viewers to partake in the fun with special broadcast Joan Baez 75 th Birthday Celebration. The event not only marked her birthday, but also honored Baez’s legendary 50 plus years in music with some of her superstar artist friends and colleagues. She performed more than 15 songs for a live audience, including collaborations with David Crosby (“Blackbird”), Mary Chapin Carpenter (“Catch the Wind”), Emmylou Harris (“Hard Times Come Again No More”), Indigo Girls (“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”), Jackson Browne (“Before the Deluge”) and Paul Simon (“The Boxer”). In between her musical stylings, Baez interspersed her vocals with off-the-cuff reminiscences, such as how she was once tasked with waking an exhausted Martin Luther King, Jr. The concert, though performed on an ornate stage, captured intimate close-ups, Baez’s connection with the audience and her love for music. Baez was also recognized by Amnesty International last year with the “Ambassador of Conscience Award,” the organization’s top honor for those who have shown exceptional leadership in the fight for human rights through their life and work. And her breakthrough 1960 debut album Joan Baez was selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. The concert is icing on the cake in what turned out to be a whirlwind year for Joan Baez. NJTV premieres more great music programs this month, including two that highlight iconic folk music from the 20th century. The Kingston Trio Celebration (June 15 at 8pm) profiles the groundbreaking folk group’s biggest hits and more by the current trio (Bill Zorn, George Grove, Rick Dough- erty) and special guests including original member Bob Shane; This Land Is Your Land (My Music) takes viewers through the evolution of modern American folk music (June 25 at 9pm). NJTV and New Jersey City University (NJCU) join together in collaboration on a new daily business segment for NJTV News with Mary Alice Williams. Broadcast financial journalist Rhonda Schaffler, right, will host this portion of the newscast, bringing her experience as editor-at-large of TheStreet, a leading digital financial media company, and anchor of TheStreet TV, to public television. This new segment will be produced and broadcast live on-location at NJCU School of Business’ Strategic Development Group Studio in Jersey City each night. The state-of-the-art studio space features a windowed backdrop on the Jersey City waterfront overlooking Wall Street. 1 JUNE 2016 JOAN BAEZ CELEBRATES HER 75 TH NJTV & NJCU PARTNER ON NEW BUSINESS UPDATE PREMIERES TUESDAY, JUNE 14 AT 9PM Learn more at pbs.org/gperf Preview more Great Performances online at watch.njtvonline.org WEEKNIGHTS AT 6PM, 7:30PM, & 11PM Learn more at njtvnews.org Watch more NJTV News online at watch.njtvonline.org AND YOU’RE INVITED!
