Rachel’s Glen Spring Match: 4-Gun 200-Yards On April 14-15, 2012, Rachel’s Glen spring match was blessed with great weather and mild temperatures. We had 26 shooters to attend in spite of gasoline prices and are most apprecia-tive of them making the trip.

Billy Stevens won the Four Gun handily with an agg of .2623 and Jeff Graves was second with a .3032 barely beat-ing out Danny Morgan who had an agg of .3045 in the Four Gun.

Things started out Saturday morning with Unlimited and Jeff Graves took top honors with a .2194 agg with Billy Stevens in second place with a .2223. Scott Mims was third with a .2707 agg. Shooters were complaining about mi-rage but I never noticed any mirage in the scoring shack. I think it was just an excuse they felt would be believed. Charlie Hood had small group of .262. Y’know, come to think of it, when a .262 is small group in 5 shot Unlimited there might have been a tad of mirage out there so we’ll give them the ben-efit of doubt.

Saturday afternoon we shot HV and the smallest group was a .322 shot by Glen Nelson. Maybe there was mirage but Don Geraci barely edged out Billy Ste-vens for first place. Don shot a .2770 agg and Billy had a .2776. Don took the win on the last group. Bob Davidson was third with a .2820.

Sunday morning was overcast so that took the mirage out of the picture but the aggs didn’t improve all that much. Steve Lee won the LV contest with a

.2524 agg, Jim Andress was second with a .2569 and Ritchie Freibert was third with a .2601. Jim Andress had the small group with a .288.

Sunday afternoon we finished up with SP and Danny Morgan won very handily with a .2291 with Billy Stevens second with a .2542. Bart Sauter had the small group with a .219 which was the small-est group shot the entire weekend. I don’t ever remember a shoot where there was not a single “one” shot the entire match. Upon reflection, I guess conditions were a little tough because we had a tough bunch of shooters and nobody really beat Rachel’s Glen.

The 200 yard part of the Southeastern Regionals will be held here in Septem-ber. We look forward to hosting you fine shooters then. In the meantime, be careful out there. Mickey Coleman

There are two types of rule violations that can occur once the match has started: range violations and safety violations. Range violations usually carry a penalty, such as an addition to the group or aggregate size in group shooting or a reduction of one’s score in score shooting. A safety violation has the penalty of a disqualification from at least the yardage or class and possibly the entire weekend (or in the case of a National event, the entire week of shooting). I’ll cover range vio-lations here...

The first is shooting outside of the re-cord area. In both the NBRSA and IBS shooting your first shot on the target anywhere above the top of the sight-er target box is basically not count-ed (unless it hits the record and the shooter wants it to count). However, the only way that a shot “above-the-line” doesn’t incur a penalty is when the shooter does not shoot another shot, advises the Range Officer that he shot an errant shot, AND the Range Officer verifies the shot and makes a note advising the scorer. If the shooter doesn’t advise the Range Officer AND it

is not verified, then when another shot is made, the errant shot is counted and a penalty is imposed. It is the act of getting the one, and only one shot verified that allows the errant shot to not be counted. This is a rule that many shooters, especially the newer ones, don’t understand or even know exists. I, personally, would like to see the range and safety commands at the beginning of the first match of the day include a statement to let shooters know that an errant first shot needs to be verified by the Range Officer prior to shooting a second shot.

Crossfires. Occasionally it happens. We shoot on another competitors’ target. I heard this comment the first match I ever shot and in a myriad of times since: there are those who have and those who will. It’s bad when it hap-pens to you and worse when you do it. Being a referee when you have to make a decision on this action is even more painful. Many ranges don’t use stationary backers and that makes the determination of who the offending shot came from virtually impossible. There are few times in benchrest oth-

er than when a crossfire occurs that show exactly which shooters have a penchant for admitting an error. Some shooters even shoot on someone else’s target (if they think they can get away with it) because they don’t like the guy or have an irrational need to win (or see the other shooter lose.) For us to not recognize that this is a highly-emotional sport is irrational. One rule that isn’t in the rulebook, but makes a lot the sense for a properly run match is: all shots during the match need to be accounted for.

Stationary backers are set up approxi-mately three feet behind the record target. With the use of stationary backers there are two things that oc-cur with a crossfire: You can tell with certainty from whom the shot was fired. This is accomplished by sim-ply laying the target over top of the backer. Those shots coming from the record target’s bench line up exactly with the shots on the backer. If there is a bullet hole that doesn’t line up, it didn’t come from the same bench. However, if someone claims a crossfire occurred on their target, they should go to the Range Officer and report the crossfire before the target crew pulls the targets and stationary backers. At the end of the relay, a referee or all of them can go to the target frames be-fore the targets are removed and line

up the errant shot through the record target and get a very good idea from which bench the errant shot came. I have seen and participated in this ac-tion a few times and it is more art than hard science, but it usually gets the offending shooter to admit the shot if they hadn’t done so already. I have yet to see someone who failed to admit a crossfire be charged with a penalty or be disqualified, but the rule exists and for the most part I have seen competitors want to do the right thing and abide by the rules. So, what are the referees to do when a crossfire occurs and nobody owns up to the shot? Absent having a discern-able line from the errant shot on the stationary backer through the record target lining up to another bench, the referees should use all available infor-mation, including asking the shooters around the person crossfired upon if they saw someone moving their rifle and/or rest to line up on another target and perhaps firing. Look at the bullet holes closely and sometimes you can see that one of them enters the re-cord at a slightly off-centered angle. At least using all information the very least that can be done is that a shot can be eliminated from the group. I know that it is an unfortunate circum-stance to one’s target crossfired on and I usually sit and watch my target through my scope (with my bolt out) when I am done to make sure that a shot doesn’t miraculously appear on my record in the last few seconds of a match. The best thing to do is have the stationary backers (which are required at Nationals and World Team qualifying matches) and hope that the shooters maintain their ethics during the com-petition. The IBS has a rule that isn’t in the NBRSA that if someone shoots a crossfire on another competitor’s tar-get and doesn’t own up to the shot, it is considered an attempt to hide that shot and is cause for disqualification.

I once was a referee at a match where a competitor shot a target on his as-signed bench but not his assigned re-lay. Needless to say, this doesn’t hap-pen too often. In fact, I have only seen

this happen once in 16 years of com-petitive shooting. A search of the Rule Book showed nothing that covered this situation. The other referees and I de-termined that the only rule applicable was that this was “in effect” a cross-fire and applied the appropriate pen-alty of XXX per shot. After the match there was a philosophic discussion as to what really happened; was this a safety violation or exactly what? At the end of the discussion we decided that the closest rule to cover the situation was that it was a crossfire inasmuch as we wanted to give the competitor the greatest benefit of any doubt within the rules that wasn’t specifically cov-ered. Had it been a safety violation the shooter would have been disqualified from the yardage and grand aggregate in the NBRSA (or the remainder of the entire weekend match in the IBS).

Another range violation that happens quite often is the four (or less) shots on a target. This is the reason that group matches have a moving backer requirement. I have only shot in a few unregistered group “honors match-es” and have heard after all three of them that “so-and-so must have only shot three or four shots to get a group that small”. I will be the first to admit that darn near every backer system at ranges where we shoot group matches has a lag or dwell that can cause an opportunity to hit the same hole on the moving backer. I have been known to shoot five shots as quickly as most in the sport. Doing this and catching a lag on the backer system is a con-tinual concern for me as a competitor.

There is one range where I compete regularly that has such a lag on its backer system that there will be sev-eral requests for the referees to make a call on four shots on backers. This is one area where the inevitable hu-man flaw of not wanting to do what the rules require has caused us to have a “less-than-perfect” system to keep the shooters honest.

This is entirely the judgment of the referees; neither the scorer nor Range Officer makes this call. So, what does a referee do when he is asked to re-view for four (or less) shots? Well, when I am asked to do this I do not take the job lightly. The penalty for less than five shots is one MOA for each shot (one inch added to the measured four-shot group at 100-yards and two inches added at 200-yards). I obvi-ously look at the backer very closely. Often you can see one or more of the holes is darker than the others or is oblong. Sometimes with the naked eye, and even more often with a jew-eler’s loop, you can see a misshapen hole on the backer. I have a loop with a 6mm circle etched on it that I use when I am a referee to make the best effort to look for misshapen holes on the backer. Certainly look at the tar-get closely, too. All too often an in-experienced referee will not look at the target and make a decision on the backer alone. Looking under a loop at the target quite often one can make out the outside circles of bullet holes. Once I was a referee at a range that had a known lag on the

Emert Long-Range Benchrest: Inaugural 1,000-Yard Texas-Style!The inaugural NBRSA 1000 yard Texas Championship match on Oct 13-14, 2011 provided plenty of wind and changing conditions to challenge all the competitors who showed up. We had 15 light gun shooters on Thursday and 20 heavy guns on Friday. Both days had their share of wind and conditions that changed a bunch throughout each day. On Thursday, we started with a pretty good wind from the northeast. The wind blew all day but gradually worked around to the southeast, so every time you went to shoot it was a different set of conditions to deal with.

On Friday morning early, the air was still and so clear you could see bullet holes in the targets. It stayed that way for a bit and then rapidly deteriorat-ed into wind and lots of mirage. The groups went downhill rapidly as well. This is an excellent range but it will nearly always be windy. It is just a few miles from a very large wind generator farm. At the end of the match, Frank Vance was the Group Champion and Tad Emert was the Score champion. Without further ado, here are the re-sults...

I would like to say a big Thank You to Tad Emert for hosting this shoot. We do appreciate Tad providing a place and opportunity to shoot this match. I would also like to thank the target crew. The Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department did a great job handling the targets. All the excess funds from this shoot went to support this group. Eddie Williams did a great job scoring the targets. Many of the benchrest vendors supported us as well. I sus-pect we gave away about $1,000 in merchandise and certificates. Thanks to every vendor that supported this shoot. Joe Duke

Evenso, it wasn’t enough to uproot Dr. Tim from winning the grand aggregate with a 0.2680.

The Heavy Varmint 100 began Sunday with the same winds and temps as the day before and Dr. Tim was still on a rampage defeatig the field with an impressive teen agg of 0.1984. Af-ter lunch the winds picked up for the HV200 and the cake walk was over. In the end, Ron Parker prevailed with a 0.2697 but it was Dr. Tim again who won the HV Grand Agg with 0.2535 and the coveted two-gun with a 0.26075.

Everyone at the Tomball Gun Club would like to give a shout-out to Zana Carter for her impressive 3rd place finish in the HV100. Her hard work and dedication has finally paid off in a big way. A big thank you to our match di-rector Russell Mathews, Trisha Hanka, Felton Corbett, Gary Walters, Glen Oakes, the Range Masters and our Tar-get Crew.

June 2012 Precision Rifleman 13

This was the first registered VFS match in Las Vegas at Desert Sportsman Rifle and Pistol Club. We could not have asked for better weather with it being sunny and in the high 60’s. The only complaint was that pesky mirage dur-ing the 200 yard match. There were nine shooters contesting to see who was going to be the first Nevada state champion. But before we get to the match results we had one shooter who just made the match twenty minutes prior to the warm-up. Still feeling good from his two-gun win in Florida, Lou Murdica had a senior moment and forgot what day the match was on. A phone call later and avoiding the Nevada Highway Patrol he made the match in a panic rush. With the help of fellow shooters we had Lou set up and ready to shoot in 15 minutes!

I would like to thank everyone for making the match and supporting the future growth of Varmint for Score. We look forward to seeing more shoot-ers in the coming months. Thanks to Lou for getting us started in the right direction. Congratulations to Keith

WWCCA Spring Tune Up: Heindselman Makes Spring Cleaning EasyApril 14-15, 2012

It was a perfect Michigan weekend for the opening Eastern Region match. Had a little rain on Saturday morning for about 2 hours, nothing heavy, then the sun came out. The conditions were a little twitchy but readable.

That night we held a steak fry and a heavy session over beverages about how if one had waited, it would have been a better group; OH WELL!!!

Sunday morning it lightly rained un-til about 11:00am. We shut down for lunch and the sky opened up. As we went to the LV 200-yard stage it stopped and the sun came out. All in all it was a good opening with 29 shooters showing up. We look forward to seeing everybody at the Wolverine Challenge on June 16th and 17th. Bill Gammon

Dean Ekstrom Shines Bright at Oak Hill Gun ClubApril 15, 2012 was a Lucky Day! Weather forcasts were for rain match day but the rain came the night before and after the match. Sometimes things just work out for you, eventhough we have no control over weather its great when it works out so we can play. We had some strong switchy winds but no one complained as long as we stayed dry.

Dean Ekstrom, a second-year shooter has been flirting with putting together a dominating performance at match-es. It just hasn’t quite happened until today. He dominated the 100-yard and 200-yard and light varmint aggregate. It’s great to see a relative new comer show the veterans how easy this game is. Do we have a rising star here? He appears to be taking his shooting very serious but is also a gracious winner. I think we need to keep our eye on this chap!! Cecil Peterson

moving backer. I was the last of the referees called into the range house and the other two had already made a decision of four shots by simply look-ing at the backer. When I looked at the backer it clearly looked like four shots. I asked to see the target and to the amazement of all three of us, there were five distinct, untouching holes on the target. Sometimes when the deci-sion is close, and after the other ref-erees have made their decision, I may push the paper down on the backside of the backer and look again at the holes. Quite often because of the fiber content of the backer paper the bullet holes look puffy and all of them mis-shapen. But, when you push the paper flat you can see a double hole where none was discernable before. I try my best to find the fifth shot, but walk a thin line of making sure that there truly is five there so that the right de-cision is made. Joe Krupa

Tacoma’s Ed Frombach Memorial & WA State 3-Gun (2011)

Light Varmint 3-Gun WinnersL-R: Steve Kostanich, Mustafa Bilal, Rick Graham

Chris Ross & Allen Tucker

Shooter of the Year Handoff L-R: Jeff Yost and Rick Graham

The Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club (TRRC) met September 3-5, 2011 for their final benchrest match of the sea-son; the Washington State Three Gun Championship. On Labor Day weekend the shooters were greeted by fairly good weather and sunshine along with some tricky conditions down range to keep the competition interesting. Saturday morning started off with the Sporter 100 contest. Although the conditions were good, letting your guard down for an instant could cause a shot to leak out of your group with disastrous results. Keeping his guard up, Rick Graham nailed first place with a .2142 Agg, Steve Kostanich , 2nd with a.2356 agg and Chris Ross close behind him in 3rd with a .2398 agg. Small group honors went to Rick Graham with a .128.

After the lunch break, the targets moved out to 200 yards and the condi-tions got a little trickier. Allen Tucker grabbed first place with a .2612 agg, Larry Boers 2nd with .2772 agg. and Steve Kostanich with a .2909 round-ed out the top three finishers at that yardage. Allen Condiff shot a .246 for small group honors.

The Grand Aggregate was won by Allen

Tucker’s .2535 agg, followed closely by Rick Graham with .2580, and Larry Boers not far behind him with a .2591 to take third place.

In Sunday morning’s LV 200-yard match, Rick Graham continued his winning ways, seemingly shooting a different range than everyone else, he shot a very fine .1687 agg, in distant 2nd was Steve Kostanich with .2086, followed by Mustafa Bilal with a .2181 aggregate. Steve Kostanich took small group honors with a .209.

Sunday afternoon’s event was the LV 100-yard. Rick Graham continued to school the field of shooters, posting another excellent agg with a .1630, again a distant 2nd was Steve Kostan-ich with .2386 and third place Allen Tucker with a .2404 aggregate. Rick Graham took small group honors with a .121.

LV Grand Agg to no one’s surprise belonged Rick Graham with a .1658, Steve Kostanich took another distant second with a .2236 and Allen Tucker, third with a .2307 grand aggregate.

Monday’s events started out with the HV 100-yard. Mustafa Bilal took 1st with a .2078 agg. Jeff Yost close be-

hind with a .2100 agg, Bob Bold-man in third with .2336 agg. Rick G r a h a m ’ s “screamer” group of .098 took small group honors at that yard-age.

Mustafa Bilal continued his dominat ion of the HV winning with a .2392 agg at 200-yards

followed by Allen Tucker’s

.2535 and Jeff Yost hot on Allen’s trail with a .2547 aggregate. Allen Tucker ‘s screamin’ .195 was the small group.

Grand Agg tally had Mustafa Bilal tak-ing top honors with a .2235, in 2nd place Jeff Yost posted a .2324 followed by Allen Tucker in 3rd with .2596 ag-gregate.

After all the tabulations had been com-pleted, Rick Graham took first place in the Washington State Three Gun with a .2384, Allen Tucker took 2nd with a .2479 and Jeff Yost with a .2623 for third.

Northwest Regional Shooter of the Year was awarded by virtue of cumu-lative points to a very deserving Rick Graham. Handed over to Rick by Jeff Yost the 2010 winner, the BAT Machine trophy is given to the most consistent shooter of the year.

Apologies to all for the late issue of this match report. As most of the lo-cal shooters know we’ve had some life challenges to deal with but are back on track now and looking forward to the new shooting season with hope and anticipation for a great year for all.
