It’s HOT! (And I love it!) Although I find myself wanting to head to the lake more often when the temperatures reach 90 on a Saturday! We are enjoying a very unusually warm Spring in my part of the country, so I wonder what Summer has in store for us. May be at the lake a lot!

We’ve had an exciting month here at the farm with all of the new babies. That reminds me. We would like to include some “baby pictures” next month, so send in those pictures of your foals with their owner, sire & dam info. We’ll do our best to include as many as we can.

We were very fortunate this year to have Steve Heuertz head to the Kentucky Derby as a press representative for The Fast Horse Resource. Steve got some great pictures and takes us through the experience with him. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, especially if you’ve never been able to attend in person. We hope to include more photos and stories from Steve in the future.

Another thing to be thinking about is our 2013 Stallion Calendar. It is always a big hit with our readers. It goes to every subscriber for FREE and we pass them out FREE several events in December. We will start reserving months for the featured 2013 stallions very soon. If you’d like to have your stallion featured next year....contact us at [email protected]

Until next month.........enjoy the heat, maybe by the water somewhere?? But don’t forget to take time and count your blessings on horseback!God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

A Little “Barrel Talk”

Horse that likes to pull back...hbhorse Posted 2012-05-22 9:10 PMRegular Posts: 52We have a 22 year old horse that likes to pull back when tied. Is there anything we can do or is there a special halter we can use to help her not do this? We have only had her for about 6 months, and she is 22 so I am guessing she will always do it... just looking for some suggestions. Thanks!

trickster jToo busy outside! Posts: 3825 Location: WyomingOh bummer, what a pain. I have one that does it and he’s only seven, it’s a tough habit to break- especially if they are 22 and have done it for a long time. Have you used the Clinton Ander-son tie ring? There has been alot of sucess with those. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evul8o7AHyE. With my guy, I just get by with looping the lead around instead of tying fast while I’m saddling or working around him. I’ll tie him hard when I leave, after he’s settled a bit. I have pretty good luck with that unless something comes by and scares him. Good luck- I feel your pain!

SaraJeanNorthern Chocolate Queen Posts: 14428 Location: ND Tie ring! I teach all my young ones to tie with it & it works great for fixing horses with issues standing tied too.

wildrideElite Veteran Posts: 1016 Location: MississippiWe have had pretty good success with the Blocker Tie-Ring. We have a mare that likes to set back. There are different ways (degrees of resistance) to tie it so you “train” them not to set back. It did wonders for our mare. You do have to check on them frequently, though, because they can get quite a lot of slack in the rope with this device. It is worth the effort to not have the set back problem though. Good luck!

KometThe Non Sky Diver Posts: 2994At some point I’ll bet this horse sucked back and something broke, the horse learned it can escape. I’ve heard lots of good things about the Blocker Tie-Ring helping to stop this...

aqha4mejtExtreme Veteran Posts: 345 Location: TexasI have 2 stalls that have tie rings from the ceiling. They can’t pull back because there is nothing to pull back against. I also have a spot in the alley of the cattle pens that I can make a 8 x 8 pen out of. I tie them in there and if they pull back the hit the fence and quit. I broke an 8 year old stud to lead/tie in

the alley. If you can’t do something like that the Blocker tie rings work great too........Since she is 22 it’ll be a hard habit to break and I honestly don’t know if I’d bother at this point.

GrizIndustrial Srength Barrel Racer Posts: 4176 Tie Ring.

HorsesNHarleysExpert Posts: 2505 Location: NCbest $20 I ever spent for my old horse that use to pull back randomly was a blocker tie ring!!! She pulled back once two steps with it and relaxed. never had a problem with her after that!!!!! I would tie her all day long at the shows with it and she did great!

nmracerRegular Posts: 61 Location: New MexicoI have a horse that would set back and not stop till he broke the halter or the lead or what ever he was tied to....talk about really scary and he would fight so hard you could not get close to him to untie him....he would stop when he was free and just stand quiet........so I got the Tie-blocker....it’s really amazing how well it works...and when he did set back, it was not a big deal....I still use it on him but it’s been years since he’s done it......so try it $20 is worth it

12smittyMember Posts: 7Try this I leave my horse that pulls back tried up for hours with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWtvdBzJDNw

trickster jThat’s awesome! I have one of those but didn’t know how to use it- duh! grittVeteran Posts: 138 I tried the blocker tie but mine was smart enough to figure out how to get loose on all resistance levels. I then changed to the clip and he hasn’t gotten loose yet. Also use a be nice halter when traveling. He does not pull back all the time, and in fact went about a year and a half with out even trying. Then he slipped in a friends trailer before I could get the lead free, fell half way out the back before catching himself and having to jump back in so I could get the lead unstuck. ( no where to put my clip so lead was just looped around stock trailer side) this incident reminded him to try again so a couple of weeks later he did when he wanted to go out with all the other horses. But the clip worked and he finally just stopped.

dakota88Expert Posts: 1928 Location: Somewhere else I’ve only had luck with a ‘gut rope’. Nothing else worked with him. He wouldn’t just pull back but run forward & crack his hard head open. The gut rope was the only thing that worked for him.

hbhorse Thanks guys! I have never had a horse like this, so it is hard for me to remember not to tie her right away, it is such a pain! She doesn’t like to be tied when saddled either. And yeah, since she is 22, there is no way we are going to change the problem!! I think I will try a tie ring and see how that works...ugh, such a pain!! Thanks for your suggestions!!

afkatrinaExtreme Veteran Posts: 344 Location: Alabama My filly figured out the ring in about an hour. She just con-tinued to pull back a little at a time until she got herself free. Did it 3 times in a row. So far, the clip has worked for her.

LadyShoot Yeah Posts: 3562 Location: Where you need a paddle... Oregon! We have one that is in her mid-teens and came to us with the same problem. It would be a bigger hassle except that we don’t use her for anything so she rarely gets hauled anywhere and tied. When we do tie her we use the tie-ring. If I’m giving her a bath at the hitching rail I just loop the leadrope around the post a few times.

We did take her to a competition last summer for our son to ride. What a nightmare. My husband had her tied hard to the trailer while he was saddling her. She set back so hard she snapped the rope and landed on the front fender of someone’s motorhome.... I was so embarrassed. Our insurance had to cover the repairs. I should know better than to take my eyes of my husband

gritt I got my Clip from Valley Vet.

The old mare watched the tractor work

A thing of rubber and steel,

Ready to follow the slightest wish

Of the man who held the wheel.

She said to herself as it passed by,

You gave me an awful jolt

But there’s still one thing you cannot do,

You cannot raise a colt.

EHV-1 OutbreakHorses in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky,

Mississippi and Tennessee may have contracted equine herpesvirus-1

From various sources noted:COLORADOFrom the Colorado Dept of Agriculture (May 24, 2012) - Read more at www.colorado.govThe Colorado Department of Agriculture is continuing to investigate and monitor horses exposed to one horse with a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) within the state; a Douglas County premises remains under quarantine. Strict bio-security and disease prevention practices have been in-stituted on the quarantined premises. This quarantine may be released on ap-proximately June 8th if there are no additional horses showing clinical signs.

Three facilities received horses from the same transport vehicle. Horses at those facilities remain free of clinical signs of EHV-1. The movement re-strictions on these facilities will be released on May 22, 2012, as they have completed the 21-day observation time period.

Unlike the EHV-1 outbreak in 2011, the initial case in Colorado originated from an out-of-state stable where there have not been any other positive hors-es. To date, no other Colorado exposed horses have become ill with similar signs. With the exception of the initial case and contact horses’ premises the State Veterinarian is not recommending movement or event restrictions.

The State Veterinarian encourages horse owners and event managers to ob-serve basic biosecurity practices such as limiting horse-to-horse contact, separating feeding, watering and tack supplies, and eliminating shared water sources at events to minimize transmission of all infectious diseases.

EHV-1 is not transmissible to people; it can be a serious disease of horses that can cause respiratory, neurologic disease and death. The most common way for EHV-1 to spread is by direct horse-to-horse contact. The virus can also spread through the air, contaminated tack and equipment, clothing and hands.

Symptoms include fever, decreased coordination, nasal discharge, urine drib-bling, loss of tail tone, hind limb weakness, leaning against a wall or fence to maintain balance, lethargy, and the inability to rise. While there is no cure, the symptoms of the disease may be treatable and owners are encouraged to talk to their veterinarian about vaccine which can offer some level of protec-tion against EHV-1.

EHV-1 Vaccines:The common vaccines available for EHV-1 immunization do not protect against the neurological form of EHV-1 disease which is commonly called

equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM). These immunizations do protect against the respiratory and abortion forms of the disease. The EHV-1 vaccines are thought to reduce the shedding of the virus and may decrease the amount of circulating virus in the system of infected horses; therefore, vaccinations prior to exposure may help reduce the severity of in-fection. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best vaccination and treat-ment strategy for your horses in your particular situation.

INDIANAINDIANAPOLIS (18 May 2012)—Read more at www.in.govThe Indiana State Board of Animal Health has quarantined a Lake County boarding facility after a horse was confirmed positive with equine herpesvi-rus-1 (EHV). The horse was humanely euthanized after showing neurological signs just days before he was confirmed for the virus. The 45 horses at the stable will remain under quarantine until all are confirmed free of the disease.

Equine herpesvirus is a neurological disease caused by any of several strains of the virus. Clinical signs include decreased coordination, hind limb weak-ness, loss of tail tone, lethargy, inability to rise and respiratory disease.

IOWAFrom the Des Moines Register (May 15, 2015) - Read more at www.desmoinesregister.comIowa agriculture officials have taken steps to quarantine an Iowa ranch after a horse sent to Colorado had an equine herpes virus that can be fatal to the animals.

Officials in Colorado euthanized the native Iowa horse after it showed signs of the disease. They also quarantined the Colorado ranch where the horse was staying when it was discovered to be ill.

Iowa Department of Agriculture spokesman Dustin Vande Hoef confirmed that steps already have been taken and that the site in northwest Iowa is quar-antined. He also said that the owners are monitoring the other animals.

The quarantine began May 12 and will last 21 days. The department declined to identify the horse owners or give the exact location of the quarantine.

KENTUCKYFrom the Office of Kentucky State Veterinarian Dr. Robert Stout (May 9, 2012) - Read more at www.kentuckyhorse.orgOn May 9, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture alerted Kentucky’s Ag-riculture Commissioner, James Comer, and staff in the Kentucky State Vet-erinarians Office of Dr. Robert Stout of an illness affecting horses that had participated in the Bucksnort Trail Ride held in Tennessee in late April. Infor-mation provided by Tennessee officials describe horses as presenting varying symptoms that include neurological abnormalities. The information released on May 9 also provided that the illness has resulted in four equine deaths with four additional horses demonstrating similar symptoms. On May 10, officials learned that preliminary diagnostic testing gives evidence that one or more of the sick horses may have contracted equine herpesvirus type-1.

Management at the trail ride provided Tennessee officials with a listing of participants that included seven Kentucky residents. These individuals par-ticipated with eight horses originating from the Kentucky counties of Ed-monson, Logan, Simpson, Todd and Warren. One of the horses is included as a fatality of the illness. Veterinarians and the owners of the remaining seven horses all report that the horses returned from the trail ride in good form and remain bright, alert, responsive and healthy this morning. The seven remain-ing horses are not known to have direct contact with any sick animal and will continue to be monitored closely. Diagnostic samples collected from the single ill horse residing in Kentucky prior to its death have been submitted for

MISSISSIPPIFrom the Mississippi Board of Animal Health (May 21, 2012) - Read more at www.mbah.state.ms.us

There have been no new EHV-1 cases reported in Mississippi since the origi-nal cases that were reported May 9, 2012. There have been no new reports from Tennessee or Kentucky.

The last cases were reported on May 8 when the Mississippi state veterinar-ian’s office was notified of two confirmed cases of EHV. In addition, four other cases of suspected EHV-1 had also been reported. To date, three of these horses have died or been euthanized and three are ill with neurological dis-ease. All of the horses recently returned from the Bucksnort Trail Ride held April 23-30 in Humphreys County, Tennessee. This event drew approximate-ly 100 horses from multiple states. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture have also reported cases in their state related to this same trail ride.

TENNESSEEFrom the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (May 17, 2012) - Read more at www.tn.govThere have been no new reports of suspected cases of EHV-1 stemming from the Bucksnort Trail ride held April 23-30 in Humphreys County since the update on May 14. To date, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has re-ceived a total of nine reports of suspected or confirmed cases of EHV-1 in Tennessee horses. The neurological form of EHV-1 has been confirmed in one case. Six of the suspected cases have been confirmed as showing clinical signs of the disease and are being isolated and monitored. In two cases, horses have been humanely euthanized.

The State Veterinarian’s office has obtained a list and has contacted each par-ticipant to make them aware of possible exposure. Restrictions on horses that attended this event are being evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The event drew approximately 100 horses from multiple states and animal health of-ficials have also been notified in those states.

CRUZIN THE WAGON SHINES DURING OKLAHOMA SPEEDFEST, CLAIMING NEW

TRACK RECORD

OKLAHOMA CITY – The inaugural Oklahoma Speedfest racing program produced fast times over a sloppy racetrack throughout the 11-race card for Oklahoma-breds. The most impressive clocking of the afternoon belonged to

Cruzin The Wagon in the Grade 3, $50,000 Jack Brooks Stakes when the filly whistled to new 350-yard track record.

Cruzin The Wagon, defeated eight other 3-year-olds in the Jack Brooks Stakes under a strong hand-ride by jockey Stormy Smith over the final half of the race, winning by a length. “She got away just like she’s supposed to and then I went to the stick one time and she opened up.”

Crossing the finish in :17.06 seconds, Cruzin The Wagon shaved .106 seconds off the former 350-yard mark that was set in the 2009 Jack Brooks Stakes by Fishin CR. Trained by Brent Clay, the victory was the ninth from 11 career starts for Cruzin The Wagon who has won six of those races at Remington Park, including four this season.

Legendary trainer Jack Brooks was on-hand in the winner’s circle to present the trophy for the race in his name to Terry & Mary Pursel of Leavenworth, Kansas, owners of Cruzin The Wagon. “It was an honor to meet and receive the trophy from Jack Brooks,” said Mary Pursel who credited a moment de-cades back for getting involved in racing. “When we went to the farm of Jack Brooks 20 years ago and saw All American Futurity winner Strawberry Silk, I knew then that racing horses was something we would be interested in doing.”

Away as the even-money wagering favorite, Cruzin The Wagon paid $4 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Katillac Man was the runner-up, pay-ing $6.60 to place and $4.60 to show. BV Valentine Wagon was third and paid $3 to show.

Cruzin The Wagon is an Oklahoma-bred filly by PYC Paint Your Wagon from the Okey Dokey Dale mare Penelope Cruzin. She earned $26,250 for the Jack Brooks triumph to run her career money to $284,832.

Michael Pohl is the breeder of Cruzin The Wagon.

Grade 3, $50,000 Easy Jet Stakes

Eyegotitgoinon stunned the Oklahoma Speedfest race fans at Remington Park by storming to the front and pouring it on to win by 1-¾ lengths in the Easy Jet. The 2-year-old gelded son of Mr Eye Opener romped home to cover the 350 yards over a sloppy track in a rapid final time of 17.256 seconds while defeating seven other 2-year-old rivals.

Owned by Raymundo Villareal Jr. of Mission, Texas, Eyegotitgoinon was ridden by Rickey Ramirez. The jockey was surprised by his charge’s alert beginning. “The last time I rode him he didn’t get away that well but he was great today, he left per-fect. He just kept going and going. If the race was longer he still would have won.”

QHRAI June NewsletterThe Quarter Horse Meet at Indiana Downs is going strong and flying by. The races are filling, actually overfilling now. One morning on entry day I saw 75 horses entered in 3 Quarter Horse Races. Wow, that’s a bunch. Don’t forget Quarter Horse Entries close at 10:30, so keep calling early. June is a busy month for our Stake Trials and Finals. Don’t forget, even if you have nominated for a stake race, you still need to enter into the trials. If you have any changes to the connections on horses you have nominated to stakes (trainer, owner, etc.), you must call Valerie Smith at 812-223-2843 to update your information. The Indiana Horse Racing Commission uses the Stake lists for potential out of competition testing, so it’s imperative the information is current.

We had a second day of schooling races with 20 starters on May 10th. QHRAI sponsored two days of schooling races this year to allow 2 year olds and non started horses to gain experience and earn their gate approval with an official work for a 250 yard dash. Those who partici-pated enjoyed pizza and soft drinks compliments of Q.H.R.A.I. Many thanks to Indiana Downs Track Manager Jon Schuster, Racing Secre-tary Scott Piene, Starter Johnnie Jamison and the entire Racing Staff who made it possible for us to run these schooling races. We will plan to run schooling races again next year around the same time, so plan to have your babies ready to go for the experience!!

The Hoosier Park Stakes Nomination schedule will be announced soon on the QHRAI.NET website and in a direct mailing to our horsemen. The nomination process will be similar to the process we used at Indi-ana Downs. Be aware and DON’T GET LEFT OUT of the great stakes program at Hoosier Park!!!

The 2012 Stallion Service Auction Futurity and Derby Trials are go-ing to be August 3rd and 4th at Hoosier Park. Finals will be August 18th. The timing of the last payment and the trials is very close so it’s important that you get the last payment sent in to Teresa Gross as early as possible.

Speaking of Hoosier Park…. Representatives of Q.H.R.A.I.’s Board of Directors recently met with Hoosier Park Track GM, Brian Elmore

and Racing Secretary, Kevin Greely. Discussions are ongoing to get the race schedule confirmed. Stakes Nomination and payment schedule will be finalized soon and will be mailed to horsemen. Keep your eyes open for these forms. If you don’t nominate you can’t run!!! Kevin is already working on the Hoosier Park Quarter Horse Condition Book and plans to have them in the mail in early July.

Youth Day – QHRAI is sponsoring a Youth Day at Indiana Downs on June 16th. Directors and Trainers are working together to make this an exciting opportunity for youth ages 14 – 18 to be able to work closely with a trainer, tour the front side and backside of the track, and help to get a horse in the paddock for its race. Thanks to everyone who is help-ing to make this a successful event.

June 30th – Horsemen, mark your calendar, this is going to be the big-gest celebration of Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana….. EVER!! Last year was great, but this year will be better. Plan to come early in the afternoon for the horsemen’s picnic sponsored by QHRAI and Indiana Downs, enjoy a full card of Quarter horse races, including stakes races and purses of over half a million dollars. And then plan to kick back and relax after the last horse crosses the finish line to enjoy friends, live entertainment and PIZZA!! QHRAI’s special guests from the Hoosier Horse Fair who are winners of the Gold Tickets will also be joining us for the day!!

Congratulations to the QHRAI Scholarship recipients and the partici-pants selected to join us on Youth Day. We are looking forward to an exciting day!!

It’s definitely a busy time of year and trainers are focusing on running their horses and winning. But, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact a QHRAI director and let us know what you are thinking!!

Good Luck Racing!!

May 19th was a perfect Sat-urday in Indiana for the year’s first Quarter Horse

Stakes Race, the temperature was in the mid 70’s and Indiana Downs was packed with enthused Quarter Horse racing fans.

The first stake on the card was the $75,000 added Indiana Downs Clas-sic, this race is slated for 4yr old and up Quarter Horses, and the field is set by high money earners in 2011 & 12. The group of veteran rac-ers that loaded into the gate would have been impressive in any stake anywhere, 7 stake winners and earners of over $1.2 million stood motionless waiting for the bell. “Aaaaaaand They’re Off” and rock-eting out to a clear early lead from the 2 hole was Bold Badon but half way through the contest took an ag-gressive right hand swerve and caused a dangerously crowded stretch for Ethics Aside and RK Lady Prospect. But no such traffic problems for the winner Jess Special Candy who hit the wire in front by a neck.

Off to a relatively slow start, veteran pilot Victor Olivo didn’t panic but put a confidant ride on his mount and moved him from 6th at 220 yards to fourth with 75 yards to go and up for the win. Trainer Rolondo Almanza gives all the credit to the horse and owner Manny Silva, “I’ve only had the horse 3 weeks and he had been running very well so I asked Manny about the equipment and other details because I didn’t want to change anything. “ “It was a tough field of horses and we had a clean trip and feel very blessed.” Jess Special Candy is by Mr. Jess Perry and out of a long line of 100k runners starting with “This Candy’s Special,” bred by Carl Pevehouse, owned by Manny Silva and Rid-den by Victor Olivo. Jess Special Candy pushed his earnings to over $147,000 with the win.

Up for second was Ethics Aside, who avoided a near disaster when cut off in mid stretch, ran a HUGE race after the troubled trip and will be one to watch in the future. A “big time” ride was put on this 6 yr old Mr. Jess Perry Gelding by sophomore rider Gerardo Garrido, the pair was closing fast but ran out of track. His second place effort earned him $17,040. Putting his earnings over $75,000 for owner and trainer Jorge Gonzalez. Another royally bred Mr. Jess Perry this one is out of

the great Victory Dash mare Daring Difference who ran out over $300k back in the 80’s. This nice gelding was bred by Joe Kirk Fulton.

In at third was Fearles Fred. This super gelding was only another neck back, this nice son of Fredricksberg (son of Mr. Jess Perry) was flying from the ten hole under the talented veteran guidance of Troy Crissup. His $8,500 share of the purse pushed his earnings over $165,000 to go along with his 13 wins from 26 outs for owner and breeder Walter “Dick” Harrison. He is trained by Carol Rettele. This multiple stakes winner is out of the nice mare Precious Debutante.

The remaining order of finish starting with fourth is Bright Eyed Vi-sion, bred by Loren George, owned by Faustino Bueno, Sr., ridden by Oscar Delagado and trained by Germain Bueno. Tortuga Tony, bred by Vaughn Cook and Paul Jones, owned by Jose Ibznez, trained by Jorge Gonzalez and ridden by Harold Collins. RK Lady Prospect, bred and owned by Kathleen Stumpf, trained by Randy Smith and ridden by Tommy Johns. Bold Badon, bred by Blaine Robinson, owned by Fran-sisco Ramos, trained by Raul Gonzalez and ridden by Yordinas Amaro. Ridin a Easy Streak, bred by Fred and Carolyn Helmuth, owned by Dan Frazier, trained by Matt Frazier and ridden by Alex Estrada. Stone Heading West, bred by James Wilkett, owned and trained by Randy Haffner and ridden by Rodney Prescott. Cash For Braggs, bred by Wil-liam Dale, owned and trained by Harold Braggs and ridden by Jose Beltran.

The final stake of the night was touting the biggest purse of $109,000, “The Born Runner Classic” for Indiana Sired 3yr olds and up and the field up was made up from the qualifiers from

trials on May 4th.

The morning line and the bettors were swayed heavily by the trial re-sults, the Randy Thompson owned and bred entry of C.T. Leader and Air Born Leader were both trial winners and ended up the fastest and third fastest qualifiers. Both geldings are by Indiana Sire Leader of the Class and out of “Born Runner” mares. The pair started off at 5 to 2 and ended up as even money favorites when they “let’em loose.”

As it turns out the handicappers knew what they were doing, after a modest break for Air Born Leader breaking from the 8 hole, he got down to business quickly and was in command a hundred yards from the wire, clearing the field at the finish. This is no new trip for the lanky 4 year old, he won this same stake last year, for the same trainer and owner. This year Victor Olivo was in the irons to win his second stake of the night.

Tom Mosley, trainer for the Thompson stable, credits good horses, good owners and good luck for his success. “ I am very lucky to have gained the confidence of Randy and Marg Thompson and my other owners. Randy and Marg Thompson have been some of the leading breeders and owners long before they met me, they have a great breeding pro-

gram are great owners to work for. Randy was the AQHA Midwest region Champion Owner in 2011 and Air Born Leader was the AQHA Midwest region Champion 3yr old gelding, so it’s a little hard for me to take a lot of credit. Victor Olivo put a great ride on “Moocher” to-night. We left so-so but scrambled badly the second and third jump, that scared us all, but Victor gave him time to gather himself, went to a left hand stick and rode him out. This kind of thing takes a team effort and I want to make sure to thank Michelle Collins, she keeps me and the horses organized I also want to thank Jennifer and Victor the lion. It was a special night for me because my kids Jack and Sarah were able to be there for the win.” The gelding’s 5th win in 16 outs earned him $59,000 bumping his earnings to over $172,000. The big grey is by Leader Of The Class and out of Air Born Jazz by Born Runner.

In at second for the second time in this stake is the talented gelding Havanna Gold ridden by Aron Hunt racked up another $22,500 for his effort pushing his earnings over $135,000. This good looker is trained by Deane Lehman and owned by his wife Jane Lehman, Greg Morrison

(White Horse Farm) is the breeder. The sire of Ha-vanna Gold is Rare Cigar and he is out of the Oh Jet Hi mare Oh Jet Rockette.

Up for third was HQH Forever Sassy, this 3yr old filly is by Twaynas Dash and out of the stakes winning mare Forever Vegas by Casino Vegas. She earned $10,900 for her first black type per-formance under trainer John McCreary, ridden by Julie Veltman for Owner and Breeder Jennifer Haynes.

The remaining order of finish starting with fourth is Bugs Dash of Honey, bred by Ron Haynes, owned by Hector Hinojos trained by John Ford and ridden by Jose Beltran. Six Chilled Coronas, bred by Eddie Martin, owned by Dan Frazier, trained by Matt Frazier and ridden by Carter Ri-ley. Roughshod Dash, owned and bred by John Mendenhall, trained by Ron Raper and ridden by Oscar Delgado. Its Chilly, bred by Circle S Ranch, owned and trained by Randy Smith, rid-den by Tommy Johns. Avitarr, bred by Diana Mo-ster, owned by Diana Moster; Brian, Douglas and

Steve Gresham, trained by Matt Frazier and ridden by Alex Estrada. CT Leader, bred and owned by Randy Thompson, trained by Tom Mos-ley and ridden by Gerardo Garrido. Chilled Six Pack, bred and owned by Raymond and Vickie Duke, trained by John McCreary and ridden by Shanley Jackson.

Wins the 138th Kentucky Derby

I’ll Have Another

Here’s a Glimpse Into Kentucky Derby History, Facts You May or May Not Know and A Photo

Journey of the ExperienceSaturday, May 5th, 2012 marked the 138th running of “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Gr. 1). No matter if you are an avid Thoroughbred Racing fan, a lover of horses and horse sports or just about anybody else for that matter, the Kentucky Derby is and remains an event that many wish to experience at least once in their lifetime. For those that have yet to have their Derby opportunity, here is your all-access pass to get you one step closer to the world’s most famous horse race.

What makes it so special?

The Kentucky Derby is often regarded as America’s greatest horse race and the one owners, trainers and jockeys want to win more than any other. So why is the Derby sospecial?Oncethefieldissetandthegates open, only one horse will be ready and able to demonstrate the rarest combi-nation of speed and stamina that will carry themtobethefastestthrough1¼milesonthefirstSaturdayinMay.Whileitisa difficult enough task to win any race, the odds of winning the Derby are astro-nomical as every one of the 30,000 Thor-oughbred foals born in the United States each year have only one chance to wear the roses in their lifetime. As the Derby is an age restricted race, only three-year-old Thoroughbreds are eligible. However, just because a horse turns three does not mean they are allowed to run in the race. In fact, only the 20 three-year-olds with the greatest amount of accumulated earn-ings in Graded Stakes races (the highest level of racing) will be permitted to enter the Derby starting gate. In the end, the one horse out of every 30,000 to win the Derby joins an exclusive club in which there are currently only 138 members. Every year the number of members in that club will grow by one and the remaining 29,999 horses that didn’t win the Derby…will turn four.

The Triple CrownThe Triple Crown is a series of three American dirtracesheldduringthespanoffiveweekseach spring beginning with the Kentucky DerbyonthefirstSaturdayinMay.Thesec-ond jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, is run at Pimlico Race Course in Bal-timore, Maryland two weeks after the Derby. Three weeks after the Preakness, the Belmont Stakes (aka, the “Test of the Champion”) is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Along with the differences in location each race is also run at a different distance with theDerbybeing1¼miles,thePreaknessat13/16 miles and the Belmont the longest of all at 1 ½ miles. In the vast history of Thorough-bred Racing only 11 horses have won the Tri-ple Crown. The 1970’s alone saw three win-ners: Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) andAffirmed (1978). In the 34 years sinceAffirmed accomplished the feat, no otherhorse has been able to win the Triple Crown. During that time eleven different horses have won the Derby and Preakness only to lose in the Belmont, continuing to make the Triple Crown one of the most daunting and elusive accomplishments in all of sports.

IBRA NEWS

KENTUCKYHey Everyone, We have some great shows coming up to finish up the season. Includ-ing Richmond, Vine Grove, Smiths Grove, Hodge Arena in Versailles, Painesville, Brandenburg, Ashland, Greenup, Bluegrass Saddle Club and the Leonard Russ Memorial (Super Show with great added mon-ey!), the KY State Finals warm up show in Liberty, KY and the addi-tion of a new facility in Lagrange, C Bar C arena! Get out and get your points to win some great awards! It is getting to be crunch time in regards to Sponsorships. To have the kind of awards we had last year, we have a long way to go. We need everyone to step up and get your local feed companies, vets and sup-pliers to help. Be sure that they know they are not just sponsoring but investing! Any sponsorship of $25 or more will be posted here on the homepage for all of our Kentucky members to see. With that said be sure to check out our sponsors and support those who support us! Go to the KY homepage at www.IBRA.us/shows/KY to download our spon-sorship packages outline. We also take product sponsorship. If you get $100 or more in sponsorships, you are eligible for the Sponsors/Direc-tors race at the National Final this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Shane

NEW JERSEYSuper Show is May 12-13 in Shartlesville, PAMay 20th Legacy Ranch in Howell NJ

PA-WESTWe will soon be in to the busy season for trying to achieve our goals & qualify for Nationals. We have added some new show promoters to our approval list. When you attend these events tell them we appreciate them allowing IBRA to approve their events! We still need to continue to work on getting sponsors! Don’t forget if you want to attend Nationals and run in the Sponsorship race you have to turn in $100 worth of sponsorships! I can’t continue to hand out nice awards on just show dollar money, we need the sponsors. Fundraisers are also an important part of adding money to the account for awards. I want to thank, Chip & Lisa Nicholson for allowing us to use their arena for our recent tack Swap we held. It wasn’t a bad turn out for the first one! Between tables & the food concession we made $605. If you would like to try this again next year, let me know!

We also have the fundraiser show coming up on Memorial Day week-end at Clyde Saddle Club. There will be a list out soon with items we need for the concession stand. We will be running the stand both days so we will need items Saturday morning early. We will also need volunteers to help out with setting poles & barrels, selling 50/50 tickets, & working in the Concession stand. I also have TV raffle tickets to sell. If you didn’t get tickets, let me know, and I will mail you some! We have 500 tickets to sell. We will pull the winner on Sunday at the Fundraiser show.Details will soon be out on the State Finals. I hope to have things posted by May 1st.Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for news & updates! Thanks!Michele

PA-EASTIf you ended the 2011 season in the Top 5 of Open, Youth, or Master and didn’t make it to the banquet to get your awards please contact me ASAP! I have jackets & awards that are unclaimed. You can mail me a check and I will mail them. I’m giving everyone until May 15th to contact me and then they will become property of PA East and will be put in Silent Auctions or offered for sale! The candy sales are going really well, love the variety flavors! I even took a box and sold them in three days! If your interested in selling some please contact Gay, Brenda, or Tanya Konopinski. The sales from the candy bars last week were the reason we were able to give out Youth saddles last year!If you have any ideas for fundraiser please get with Gay, Brenda, or my-self. The more money raised and put in the bank means better awards!Just a reminder at Diamond 7 Arena show that Dave is putting on. We need members to volunteer to help out with setting barrels, running the gate, etc. Dave has graciously offered to give some of the proceeds from these shows to help out with awards as long as we get members to help out at the shows! It doesn’t mean a few members helping all day. It means everyone help-ing a couple of hours here and there! Everyone loves to get nice awards!I’m sure everyone is tired of hearing this but we need sponsors! Even a $25 sponsor will help out...get out and ask around.Family members, feed stores, your farrier, where you work are just some examples.

TENNESSEEHey Fellow IBRA Members,The summer show season is just around the corner. I hope that you find some local shows in your area as I have had a few new arenas contact me about shows in East and West TN. Also don’t forget about the Preferred Show coming up in Cloverdale, IN the second weekend in May. I have been in contact with the home office and hope to have the state split on the website in the upcoming weeks so be sure to check it out. Also check the website weekly for updated shows and show results.I hope that everyone has been enjoying this great weather thus far. I know I can’t say this enough but please go out and try to start getting sponsors for the TN State Finals which will be held at the Miller Colise-um in Murfreesboro, TN on Aug. 17-19, 2012. Any amount or donation will gladly be appreciated and accepted. Remember if you $100 spon-sorship you are eligible to run in the Directors/Sponsors Race at the Na-tional Finals which will be held in Louisville, KY this year on Oct 1-6. See ya down the road.Jamie

WEST VIRGINIAJust want to remind everyone of the Silent Auction on May 12th at Waynesburg Show, all proceeds will be donated to Susie Watkins. Bring your items that day, if you’re not able to be there, then give to Becky or Lora. Hope the auction will be a success. We have a lot of show dates already and more to come. Check the website, if it’s not on there, it’s not approved. If ever not sure, just contact me. We are having our State Finals and Awards show this year at Waynes-burg on August 25th, your points will count for this year and next sea-son, like it has over the past couple of years. Everyone needs to work

on Sponsorship money, depends on the amount of money to what and how nice the awards will be this year. If attending the National Finals, you must turn in at least $100.00 to run in the Sponsor race. The person who turns in the most sponsorship money will receive the following paid for them, one Stall, entry in the$10,000 guaranteed, and either the master or youth entry paid. For every $50.00 turned in, your name will go into a drawing to win for a paid stall, depends on amount of funds to how many we can give away. Hope to have a great season. I will need the help of all the members to make it a success!!

WISCONSIN Reminder, the WI IBRA Finals will be July 28 & 29, 2012 at Showtime Arena in Deerfield, WI.They will be the finals on Sat and an Open Jackpot on Sunday. The format for Sat is a long go Open 4D with 10 in each division coming back for a clean slate short go. The Masters and Youth will be one go and a 3D. There will be added money and awards dependent upon spon-sors. I will have sponsor form available at Showtime this weekend and Chism’s next weekend. OR, let me know and I can e-mail one to you. We need sponsors to have awards and added money. The state finals also counts as a bonus show. Remember only your top 14 shows count for points. Winners in each division will also get a wild card good for the IBRA national finals. The finals will be open to anyone you do not have to be a member to enter but only IBRA members will be eligable for awards and added money. Any questions please let me know. Thanks,Patti Ferguson - WI IBRA State director.

June-July 2012

There have been a lot of changes around here at the ranch in the last few months. We have had a lot of new additions with all of the babies being born. We have also lost a few members of our permanent crew for different reasons.

You all remember reading about losing our friend Puddles (Freckles’ sister.) We recently had two members of our crew move to a new farm to help with the day to day business there. Princess Annabelle now has her own kingdom to run and she took her sidekick, Shep, with her. Of course they will come and visit us

occasionally since they live with “Grammy”- I just hope I get a heads up before the visit so I can make other plans.

This means that we are now down to a reduced staff, so I thought I would give a roll call for those wondering who remains active on the crew.

We still have Duke, the neighbor dog who never went home, living here. He is the big lab with the muddy feet in the picture to the left. He patrols the property at night when all the girls go inside the house. He’s also a sentimental kind of guy who will grow on you after a while. He even smiles like the people.

We also have Freckles. She is the “pretty girl” of the bunch. She is quiet and loyal and she really loves the lady who lives here. She follows the

l a d y so close the she’s ran into the back of the lady a few times when she’s made a sudden stop. She loves chasing a ball and she isn’t bad to hunt with.

And then there’s me. As you all know, my name is Bella. Most people think that I was named for a princess or something of that sort.....wrong. I was actually named after the a horse. He won the Old Fort Days Sweepstakes the year that my people picked me up while in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. His name was Bellefous.

Until next month....I’m glad they didn’tgo with “Smitty!”

with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier...

Within all of us, there is a “compass” that directs our paths. It’s a sense of “true north”, which has been established by our morals, our values, our sense of “right and wrong.” It is “who we are”; “what we value”; and

“what we truly cherish” that determine where we want “to go.” And those same things are the framework in which we make the decisions to get where we are going.

With my limited knowledge of physics and magnetic/electrical forces, I understand that a compass recognizes some constant force within the earth; and that, regardless of how lost we might be, the compass always points in the same direction – North.

The same is true of our internal compass. It is a constant force in our existence. How we use it and how we follow it is determined by the exercise of our own will; but it is “me” that changes, not the compass. No matter how lost I am on my journey, my internal “true north” remains constant. It’s always the same!

Our ignoring the compass or our willful disregard for its power may change its influence on our life; but it does not change the direction in which it would point us, if given the chance.

We can hide the compass in our pocket and never look at it. We can wander aimlessly with no reference point, but “true north” is always, and will continue to always be “true north.” We can bury the compass in a drawer or in a box in the attic; but back there in dark corner of a drawer or box, it’s still pointing the same direction – North.

The questions that must be answered begin with “What is our ‘true north’?”

And then once the direction is determined; we must decide “Will I follow the compass that keeps me pointed toward my ‘true north’?”

TRUE NORTH

Summer isn’t officially here yet but at least in the southern part of the country it gets pretty hot during the day. The heat can get especially brutal in June, July and August. Soon it will not unusual to have heat indexes past the 100 degree mark. All this added heat in comparison to the winter, spring and fall give our equine athletes, broodmares and pleasure horses more opportunities to have heat related problems. Summer also happens to be a time when racing, horse shows and other equine events are going full throttle. Broodmares are hopefully getting heavy in foal by this time so they have another source of heat growing in their bodies. Make sure these ladies have plenty of shade. Treating hyperthermia or overheating is much more difficult than preventing it so we will start off discussing prevention then go to recognition and lastly discuss treatment.

Most of us think that our horses become dehydrated after a show, trail ride, or long work session, but did you know that many of them start out dehydrated before the saddle hits their back. Living in hot climates is not just tough on us; it’s tough on our horses. High heat indexes can cause your horse to sweat excessively. Through sweat they loose water and electrolytes, mainly sodium, potassium, and chloride. Now you may be giving your horse some wonderfully flavored electrolyte with their feed, but be careful. Unlike other animals (humans, dogs, cats) sugar does not enhance the uptake of electrolytes in equines and unless you read the label, sugar may be the majority of what you are feeding. So what is the best electrolyte mixture for your horse? 1 Tbs Table

Salt (Sodium chloride) combined with *1Tbs Light Salt (Potassium chloride) per day, in the feed, for the average horse will supply the electrolytes he needs to replace what he looses in his sweat. Horses primarily cool themselves with evaporation, convection, conduction and avoidance of radiation. Since evaporation is the most important route of cooling for the horse, we need to make sure they have plenty of cool fresh water to drink so they can replace all the water that they loose by sweating. A horse standing in a pasture can easily drink twenty gallons or more of water per day. This is especially true of a horse being hauled in a trailer load of several horses. All the horses cumulative body heat can really heat up a trailer so make sure the air flow is very good especially if you are hauling during the day. If at all possible haul your horses at night after the sun goes down. Have enough drivers that you can switch drivers and keep all the drivers fully awake and refreshed. Try to haul in trailers with insulated roofs. Make sure your trailers are well ventilated, ventilated, ventilated! Make sure each horse is offered water on a regular basis every few hours during the trip.

As you can see, horses standing in a pasture or riding in a trailer can have a high demand for water but a horse can loose as much as 10-15 liters of water per hour in humid conditions with only moderate exercise. If fluids are not replaced it can lead to cardiovascular and thermoregulatory instability. Sweat must evaporate to be effective in regulating body temperature. When relative humidity is high, sweat evaporation is severely limited and your horse’s body temperature will not be regulated properly. So what do you do?

Always provide fresh water. If trail riding, consider a bucket of fresh water and a bucket of electrolyte water. You can use the same mixture listed above for a 5 gallon bucket. If you and your horse are competing, consider hyper-hydrating your horse before you leave and during competition. Hyper-hydration is simply giving your horses fluids before they need them. Studies have proven that being hyper-hydrated before you trailer and/ or compete will enhance performance and cause less stress on your horse’s body.

If you know your horse is as well hydrated as you can get him then take advantage of convection. Set up fans around the stall, barn or riding arena or put him in front of a fan after he comes off the race track or out of the barrel arena. If you are through riding or exercising him then use conduction to help the cooling process. Hosing cool water on a horse’s

body and legs will help cool the core body temperature. Even if you are not through competing or working him you can put cold water on his legs. The blood vessels are closer to the skin in the legs and therefore the blood is easier to cool. Some trainers believe that cold water put on a horse’s hot body will shut down the blood flow to the skin. This is incorrect. It is well proven that a horse’s core body temperature is easier to maintain within an acceptable range with cold water baths to the legs and or body during rest periods or after intense exercise. The cold water allows the heat of the horse’s body to be absorbed into the water as it runs off his body.

Recognizing a horse in heat distress is fairly easy. Since his cardiovascular system will be in distress due to his blood being in his skin trying to cool his body then his blood pressure will be low. This will result in pale mucous membranes and the gums will have a capillary refill time of greater than two seconds. If you pull up his skin into a tent it will stay in the tent position for 2 seconds or more. His rectal temperature could be 104 or higher. He will probably act depressed and very lethargic. If he shows these signs then get an equine veterinarian to check him out very quickly. In the mean time get him in the shade and have a fan blowing on him and hose him all over his body with cold water. Offer cool water to him to drink. When the veterinarian examines the horse he may need intravenous fluids depending on how dehydrated he is.

When the veterinarian gets to your horse he will probably pull some blood and do a few tests to quantify the amount of dehydration so he can calculate the amount of fluids to give. There will also probably be a test performed that checks his electrolyte levels and acid/base levels. Electrolytes will be added and medications to correct his acid/base balance as dictated by the blood tests. Your veterinarian will probably start IV fluids immediately upon arrival. Depending on the severity of the situation, the horse could be feeling pretty good within the hour or if treatment was started too late the outcome may not be too good. Upsets to a horse’s system like this many times set off the cascade of events that cause laminitis and colic. Those two are another story for a different day. Preventing heat distress is truly a time when an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Horses&HeelsWhereCountry MeetsCityWith all this fuss I make about cwoboy boots, I know some of you probably wonder if I know anything that goes beyond the look of the boots? To answer your question, I want to take you on a trip with me that I made to Mercedes, Texas a few months ago. What is in Mercedes you ask? The Anderson Bean, Rios of Mercedes, and Olathe Boot Factory. As a blogger, I was honored to be invited out to the factory for a tour.

Anderson Bean, Rios of Mercedes, and Olathe are all sister companies. The differences in the boots you ask? It all comes down to price points; the price points are set by the amount ot work that goes into the making of each pair. I was thrilled to be able to tour all the factories and see the process from start to finish. The boots are all made in the USA. I’m going to share some of my favorite photos and share a few of the processes.

We started out in the hide room, talk about overwhelming; the colors, the texture, piping, not to mention the fabulous smell of leather. This is where the boot making process begins.

After the hides are selected the tops of the boots are started and you determine the stitch pattern (if any that will go on the top of the boot). Going back to price points, you will find that Anderson Bean boots are much cheaper than Rios of Mercedes. This is difference number one- Anderson Bean tops are stiched out on a machine, Rios of Mercedes are hand stiched.

The boots make their way daown the assembly line, the tops are trimmed and attached to the bottoms. It sort of looks like this. What are we missing?

It’s really something you should see for yourself. You will have a whole new appreciation for Anderson and Rios fo Mercedes when you do.

Indiana Rough Riders The Rough Riders clinic started off with a “BANG” at the beautiful Henry County Saddle Club grounds on May 12th as a “pop can” was shot by Bryan McDonald to help demonstrate the ammo and guns used in CMSA and to show why safety is always the main topic at all the clinics and CMSA matches. While Bryan spoke about CMSA, the mangled can was passed around for

the new shooters to inspect.

Next was the safety and gun handling part of the clinic. We had some exceptional participants this year and everyone caught on quickly. Once all the new shooters d e m o n s t r a t e d they could handle their firearm safely and correctly it was time to move on to training their horses.

Not only did we have an exceptional group of new shooters but the horses did equally well. It only took about forty five minutes of training the horses before the new shooters were trotting courses and actually shooting off their own horses. Hats off to the clinic participants, their horses and all the cowboys and cowgirls that helped made the clinic a success!

The Rough Riders also held a CMSA 3 stage match on Saturday evening and a 4 stage match on Sunday. The top Cowboy and Cowgirl on Saturday were Joyce Nelson and Rick Deckena. On Sunday the top Cowboy was Eric Nelson with Joyce Nelson winning again and also moving up to a Level 6. Congratulations to all!!

Well once again that’s all for this month!Keep those cylinders spinnin’ and God Bless!Bryan McDonaldIRR President

What have you won? Won the Good Times Futurity Youth 2010, top five at Good Times Futurity Open, top five IL state show 2011, 2D Fortune Five winner, NBHA Youth World finalists, top ten Running on the Wild Side Cloverdale, and all the smaller shows around here.

Clint is an 18 year old recent graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trent-man. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, had to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes, placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1d in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

What associations do you belong to? and where do you show? NBHA, IBRA, AQHA. Mostly anywhere my mom can drive that doesn’t require backing because she can ONLY go forward.

What is your favorite show and why? IL NBHA State show because they have

killer fried pickles. And it’s always a good time with all my favorite barrel racers.

How many horses do you own? Three sorrel mares. Crimsons Last Chance (aka Chancy) is 11 yrs old. She runs barrels and is scared of everything. I’ve had her for almost four years. She’s a spoiled brat. It’s basically Chancy’s world and I’m just living in it. Sunfrost Express

(aka Loretta) is 9 yrs old. She runs barrels and I’ve only had her since

January. The only thing she loves more than cribbing is food. And she will bully you any chance she can get. Lynda On My Mind (aka Lindy) is 2 years old. She’s Chancy’s half sister and just got started on barrels.

Who is your mentor? My mom and Shaundie Schilling

Hobbies other than horses? Basketball, basketball, and more basketball.

What would you like to accomplish with your horses? I just want my horses to like what they’re doing. I want barrel racing to be enjoyable for them and for the people watching them run.

What do you want to do after high school? I plan on going to college, hopefully the University of Kentucky, and getting my degree in dentistry.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Starting my own dentist office and having a big farm filled with top notch barrel horses.

What advice can you give your fellow barrel racers? Hard work pays off in the long run. God has a plan, just enjoy the ride.

Good luck to all and ENJOY YOUR SUMMER,

Clint

Rodeo Newsfrom the

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

A “DAIRY” GOOD TIME AT FAIR OAKS FARMS

Fair Oaks Farms has partnered with the Indiana High School Rodeo Association for the last few years now. They have generously donated sponsorship dollars to help fund our state finals. So as an association, we decided to pay the good people at Fair Oaks a visit and see just what their farm is all about. When we first pulled up to the farm in Rennselaer, Indiana, I was surprised. I guess I never realized how big of an operation Fair Oaks actually was. Right off of the highway was a BP fuel station with the Fair Oaks Farms logo painted on the side and in the background were three large buildings. The first building we went to was the cheese factory and gift shop where Fair Oaks’ produces their world famous cheese. There we ate lunch, enjoying the absolute best grilled-cheese sandwiches I’ve ever tasted, and socialized. Next, it was on to the tour of the farm. As we entered through the second building, we em-barked on our “Dairy Adventure”. This building was filled with fun and educational activities and exhibits that were enjoyed by all. There was also a theater that played a 4-D movie about the farm and gave us a preview of what our tour was going to be like. We boarded our bus that was painted with cow spots and met very nice lady who was our tour guide/bus driver. She took us to a part of the farm that housed a very large number of cows. We drove through the feeding barns and got to see an actual carousel milking parlor in action. That single milking parlor milked 3,000 cows. We were then informed that Fair Oaks had ten other sites just like that! Do the math. Fair Oaks milks 30,000 cows everyday twice a day! I was overly impressed with

that part of the tour alone. We then boarded the bus again, and after a short delay due to a bus break-down we were back where our tour had begun. Before we stepped off the bus, our guide told us that a calf was about to be born in the Birthing Barn. So we headed over to the third building known as the Birthing Barn to watch an actual birthing of a calf! Not growing up on a farm myself and that being the first time I had witnessed the birth of a calf, I thought it was a pretty neat experience.Outside the birthing barn was a kids’ area with a rock wall and a bounc-ing tube. A few of us students took the opportunity to show our inner-child by jumping on the bouncing tube. And after a little coaxing we even got our association president Doug to jump with us! We then headed back to the cheese factory to get some homemade ice cream. It was the perfect way to end an awesome day at Fair Oaks. I recommend anyone passing through the central Indiana area to stop by Fair Oaks Farms and check them out for themselves. You’ll be glad you did!

Jenni Hoefling is from New Palestine, In-diana. She is a 15 year old sophomore at New Palestine High School and this is her second year as a member of the IHSRA. Her parents names are Andrea Hoefling and David Prosser. Jenni com-petes in Pole Bending and Barrel Racing on her horse names Really Cookin’ whom she calls Cookie. She says that she is a member of the IHSRA because she loves being with her horse and her friends and loves riding and contesting and couldn’t imagine life without it. Her future goals are to get into Purdue’s Animal Science program, then go on to veterinary school and work with all animals from reptiles to livestock. Her most memorable moment was the 2012 New Castle rodeo when she rode in the grand entry carrying the Lucas Oil Flag – she bent the pole going through the gate putting an entirely new meaning into the term “pole bending”.

IHSRA would like for you to meet Jenna Kampschaefer. Jenna is an 18 year old senior from Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Her parents names are Kurt and Beth Kamp-schaefer and her horses’ names are Stax O’ Cash and Yellowstone. She competes in barrel racing and pole bending and her fu-ture goals include making it to Nationals in college rodeo. She has been a member of the Indiana High School Rodeo Associa-tion for three years and when asked why she joined her reply was, “My friend was in IHSRA before I was and she said she loved it so I tried it and now I love it also.” Her most memorable rodeo moment was when president Doug Dickinson called her name for a National Qualifier buckle in Barrel Racing.

The warm days of summer are here and the kids are out of school. There are so many things to look forward to this sum-mer for our IJRA members.

Our La Porte rodeo will be here soon. This rodeo is our second to last rodeo of this current season. Our IJRA State Finals will be held in August and the top four contestants in each event will have the opportunity to compete for the Event Titles and All-Around Champion-ships for the 2011-2012 IJRA season. La Porte will give the kids the opportunity to work toward their goals and have the opportunity to compete at the State Fi-nals. The elections for the IJRA Board members as well as the officers will be held at La Porte.

Team Indiana will head to the Cinch Division Junior High Nationals Finals in Gallup, NM at the end of this month. The kids who have competed there be-fore are excited to make another trip and the contestants who qualified this year for the first time have a memorable trip ahead of them. We wish all of our fami-lies and contestants a safe trip, lots of great memories and a successful National Finals! Watch for an update in the July issue to see what amaz-ing things the trip to Gallup brought for Team Indiana.

Attention all upcoming IJRA 6-7-8 girls who are interested in compet-ing in the 2012-2013 IJRA Princess Contest. Packets are currently being handed out to those who are planning on competing. The contest is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to promote IJRA as well as the sport of rodeo. Each contestant will be judged on their speech, a horsemanship pattern, and an one-on-one interview. For packets or more information please see IJRA Princess Lois Thomas or her mom, Caren.

It’s time to start getting things together for the IJRA State Finals. We have some great families who are help-ing organize this year’s finals and would love for many more families to become in-volved. We could use more donated items for the silent auction as well as help plan-ning some fun family activi-ties for the kids and families. We will be talking a little bit more about the State Finals at the La Porte rodeo, please share any ideas to share that will help to make our State Finals even more memora-ble for the kids!

Many of you reading this can remember barrel racing before the 4-N-1. Many of you can remember barrel racing before horse show committees actually worked up the ground at all....or maybe even before barrel racers (gamers) competed in actual arenas. One thing is for sure, barrel racing ground is a lot better and safer - not to mention more consistent - than it was way back when.

I can remember making sure we got to a barrel race and entered early to get the best ground. Because in those days, they didn’t “drag every 10,” let alone have “big drags.” If you ran towards the end of the class there were ruts you had to make sure and stay in to even have a shot at a paycheck.

I can vaguely remember an arena roped off by baling twine tied together all the way around and tied to “T-posts.” I also remember my mom telling about one place where they parked the vehicles in a large oval to form a barrier for an “arena.”

I have heard stories (some of them in past issues of The Horse Resource) about running barrels on baseball diamonds and in the middle of open fields. (Now, I can relate a little, because some of the rodeos I have been to have been in some pretty strange places....but they DID have a tractor to work the ground.)

We’ve came a long way towards “good ground.” I’ve became so accustomed to it that if I don’t think it’s “good enough,” I won’t run. (I might hurt my horse.....lol) I guess we had some seriously tough horses back in the day....although they didn’t seem to stay sound as long as they do these days....hmmmmmm.

Needless to say, “Thank God for Good Ground!” The horses my kids are riding are in their twenties and still going strong, partly thanks to good ground.

Good ground gives good results. From faster times, fewer injuries and hardly any falls. Good ground leads to horses lasting longer and a much fairer and consistent playing field from start to finish of an event.

So, let’s not take the good ground for granted.

Good ground is also much more productive when it is thought of in perspective to Christians. With the ground being where we, as Christians, are in our lives - where we choose to “make our run.”

Think about it this way. If you’re out of God’s will, then the arena where you’re making your run is probabaly some pretty crappy ground and you’re not likley going to get good results.

If you’re living day to day and leaving God out of the picture, it’s like letting your arena set and harden (just like our hearts can harden) until when you go to make your run, it’s unfit for use. Likewise, when you’re needed to help another or to do something God wants you to do, your heart will be unfit for the task.

How do you get good ground?

You work it up! You water it! You tend to it!

That is how we need to treat our spiritual lives. To be sure that we are keeping our “arena” fit for God’s use and ready at any time, we need to work at it.

God gives us plenty of resources and tools in his word. And we live in a country where we allowed to read that word - let’s not take that “good ground” for granted either!

Let’s start working on getting our ground (spirtual life) in great shape. It will help keep us from stumbles and falls and it will definitely make our lives more productive.

Luke 8:15But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience

Until next month.... Let’s get to workin’ it! Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

This month’s Mystery photo pretty much speaks for itself. If you have been a pole bender for any amount of time, you will know this duo. This gentelman rockin’ the sunglasses and his buckskin horse were nearly impossible to outrun in the poles.

If you can correctly identify our cowboy and his horse, include a year and maybe even a location....and give us as much information as possible....you can win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Please send us your photos from the past....we’d like to use them in our Mystery of the Month. Horses, people, events, etc... Send via email to: [email protected] or mail to The Horse Resource 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302 We will return your original photos to you.

Still No Winner! We are still looking for a winner to claim the May 2012 prize. Name the ladies in this picture and give us as much information as possible to be our winner.

Contact Us via phone at 765-744-7363 or email at [email protected]

We are running low on photos.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!!
