QCC’s System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) Hosts College for a Night On March 15, 2011, QCC’s System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) Program offered “2011 College for a Night: With an Eye to Future Possibilities” on the QCC main campus. The event was open to students in adult basic education (ABE) programs throughout Central MA to promote college and career readiness.

The program focused on non-credit certificate options and viable next steps for ABE students to pursue jobs, build skills and gain experience from those options, as well as attain more education and training to pursue career pathways for advancement. Colleen Doherty, Assistant Dean of Career and Academic Advisement, and Tom Patria, Career Planning Representative, gave an overview of the career planning process, an introduction to the Holland Career Inventory, Web site resources, and a demonstration of an informational interview with former QCC phlebotomy student, Lezlie Prindle, who now works in phlebotomy at an area hospital.

Students also attended specially developed class sessions led by Training and Education Center (TEC) faculty in the following areas: Community & Medical Interpreting, Computer Basics, Greening Homes-Energy Efficiency, Laboratory Animal Technician, Microsoft Office 2007, Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Personal Fitness Trainer, Phlebotomy/EKG and Sterile Processing. Each session provided an overview of the field and corresponding course, as well as hands-on activities.

110 ABE students and 20 ABE instructors, counselors and program directors attended. Student evaluations of the evening were all positive, as were Faculty and Staff comments.

New QCC Honor Guard in Fine Formation!

In January 2011, QCC formed a new Honor Guard to add to its list of impressive campus-wide services. The volunteer unit is comprised of QCC Police/Campus Safety Staff, Officer Daniel Litchfield, Officer Steve DiGiovanni, and Officer Hasnain Ali, led by Lt. Reynaldo Rodriguez. Lt. Rodriguez has extensive experience from 11 years in the National Guard as well as marching in parades as part of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. To aid the new Guard in their duties, Lt. Rodriguez has compiled an Honor Guard Guide that is updated frequently. The QCC Honor Guard’s uniforms are in QCC colors, the blue of which the Guard affectionately dubbed “Wyvern Blue.” The Honor Guard’s first official event was QCC Commencement 2011 and their meticulous practice paid off; it was an impressive sight. Future plans include regular appearances in local parades and performing honor guard duties at funerals. The Guard also hopes to get approval to work with parade riffles, which are essential items for a proper honor guard that carries US and MA flags. The new QCC Honor Guard may also appear in a local Columbus Day parade in October, and a 9-11 Ceremony on campus, that is currently in the planning stages.

Daniel de la Torre Presents at Annual Meeting of the New England Association for College Admission Counseling Daniel de la Torre, Coordinator of Transfer and Articulation, drew on first-hand career experience transferring QCC students, in his presentation, “Is Your College Transfer-Friendly? Prove It!” on June 9, 2011 at the Annual Meeting of the New England Association for College Admission Counseling held on the campus of Stonehill College in Easton, MA.

The presentation focused on transfer priorities and concerns from a seldom-viewed perspective—that of the student! While transfer questions and advice are often specific to each student and to their unique transfer plans, common concerns arise in areas such as course transferability, the pros and cons of transfer agreements, finding transfer information at college web sites, and the need for financial aid and scholarships.

Applied Arts Program graduates, Keira Powell, Daniel Moreta, Roely Urena, Deanna Collins, and Randy Soto participated in video clips to make the session come alive with actual experiences. Besides the participating students, special thanks go to Applied Arts Program Professors Mary Newman, George Fitch, and John Solaperto, Learning Lab Manager/Sr. Technical Specialist for their collaboration and support.

In the first phase, Academic libraries will migrate to the new system first, on July 5, and public libraries will follow in the second phase. SCAD - 4 Success! Congratulations to 2011 graduates of QCC’s Applied Arts program, Randy Soto, Keira Powell, Daniel Moreta and Roely Urena for their acceptance to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. All four recent grads will be attending with scholarships ranging from $20-30,000 based on GPA, Phi Theta Kappa status, and portfolio.

In addition to the recently accepted QCC students, there are also two former QCC Applied Arts Program graduates who will graduate this year from SCAD, as well as eight currently attending (one with a full scholarship) from QCC’s APA program. (SCAD is considered one of the top art and design colleges in the country with over 50 various majors.)

Interestingly, Randy Soto, Daniel Moreta and Roely Urena are all from the Dominican Republic, living in Worcester while attending classes and never knew each other until coming to QCC— they are all now the best of friends!

ZOMBIE UPDATE....It has been rumored that QCC’s closeted zombie Leo Burgess, has been summoned by the AMC network recently for filming a Season Two episode of the hit show, The Walking Dead. Mr. Burgess may or may not have traveled to the Atlanta, Georgia-area for several days, to participate in filming an upcoming show as the recent winner of a contest sponsored by the network.

The episode Mr. Burgess participated in could potentially air in October. (Our details are specifically vague at this time because Mr. Burgess signed a stringent non-disclosure agreement which precludes any detailed information to be shared until close to air-time.)

Based on the comic by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, The Walking Dead is shot on location in the Atlanta area and has recently experienced a cult following. Filming on location poses specifc problems as The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported in a recent article at: www.ajc.com/news/henry/zombies-take-over-henry-968755.html

Stay tuned for more information...

We’re Number 33!?The Worcester Business Journal recently compiled its list of the 100 largest employers in Central MA. QCC came up 33rd with 1,119 employees! Read the article at: http://www.wbjournal.com/news49275.html
