Tamhlacht & Golgotha Derek Culley is a self-taught artist from Dublin, now living in Southport, Merseyside. He has been working and exhibiting since the mid-eighties, with shows in England, Ireland, Germany, Wales, France, Spain, USA, China, Macedonia and Canada. Derek was a founder member and chairman of Celtic Vision with the painters John Bellany and Denis Bowen, and participated in the group’s exhibition tour in 1986-7.

The show is very much inspired by Tallaght and its historical and spiritual past. Of this exhibition Derek writes: “As a child I went to school in Tallaght when its main building was the Dominican Priory. Always a place of mystery, I loved climbing over the Monastery wall and roaming the grounds. I would find peace of mind in the Dominican Chapel where the friars taught us religion and said Mass. I have always been fascinated by the history of Tallaght: its mythology, with the Parthalonian colony being killed by a plague and giving rise to the name Tamh (plague) Lacht (grave monument); or the proven existence and importance of the monastery established by St. Maelruain.

The main work in this exhibition, Tamhlacht, consists of 14 individual panels each measuring 48” high x 30” wide and is informed by the history and mythology attached to Tallaght village and surrounding area.”

The main piece will be complimented by a work Golgotha - The Place of the Skull that is 30ft long x 59inch’s high and is based on the 14 Stations of the Cross.

We live in a disposable society. Mobilephones, communication devices, game consoles and PCs have short lifespans. How can we rethink, reuse and reinvent our e-waste?

Hardware hacking, programming and physical computing are becoming part of artistic scope. There is a growing interest among artists and designers to know more about these domains of creation.

This event is a unique opportunity in Ireland to discover and experience current artistic and technological development in this fascinating field of artist research, and to engage with the contextualization of this new art practice.

The exhibition includes work from international visual artists: LoVid (USA),Karl Klomp (NL), Gijs Giesked (NL), Benjamin Gaulon (FR/IRL), Tom Verbruggen (NL) and Rosa Menkman(NL).

ReFunct Media is a multimedia installation that (re)uses numerous “obsolete” electronic devices. The project will be built over a period of a week and broadcast live on the internet on www.glitchfestival.com, www.ruared.ie, and www.data.ie

Presented by RUA RED as part of the Glitch Festival. The Glitch Festival is supported by South Dublin County Council and the Arts Council.

Bodies and BuildingsBodies and Buildings is a series of deliberately low res guerilla dance videos by independent choreographer and dance artist Fearghus Ó Conchúir.

The videos place the moving body in relation to urban regeneration building projects in Dublin, Beijing, Shanghai and Liverpool.

The short dances are filmed on phone cameras on building sites and street corners and stake a claim for the human need to make a space for oneself in the context of rapid and not always beneficial urban change.

All the films are an opportunity to see the articulate body moving and being moved in familiar contexts that can be understood differently through this physical intervention. The contexts are architectural, social, and political and the films assert the need for the individual body to berecognised in those wider settings.

Fearghus Ó Conchúir is a mentor on the current Dance Residency supported by RUA RED, the South Dublin County Council Arts Office and the Arts Council. See Page 16 for more information on the residency.

On Common GroundThis exhibit ion is a continuation of Simon Burch’s work concerning the Irish landscape. The large scale photographic prints show two aspects of man and nature’s interaction, abandoned woodland and the scorched earth of gorse fires. As land use intensifies these intimate and personal views offer a reflective counterbalance to the preconceived notions of landscape.

Simon Burch is a photographer based in Dublin. Originally from Northern Ireland he worked in London for 8 years, moving to Dublin in 1996 to establish a studio. His work practise is divided between assigned and Fine Art work, and this exhibition is a continuation of his previous project ‘Under a Grey Sky’, concerning the Irish landscape.

These large scale photographic prints explore pockets of land in different states of cycle, and can be seen as indicators of a broader record of evolving interaction with Irish landscape.

Simon Burch has won International awards, and his work is held in collections in Ireland and abroad. He has been commissioned by Time Magazine, his work has appeared in the New Yorker, and has twice been an invited artist to the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Show.

Presented by RUA RED with support from the Arts Council.

Freedom of the City“Freedom is the consciousness of necessity” Marx

In this time of socio-political upheaval are we on the precipice of a new way forward? Now more than ever artists have the power to step outside the system and utilise their power to transform the cityscape, whether through intervention, subtle take overs or insertion into the public consciousness. Freedom of the City references the medieval concept of “free status”. The recipient enjoyed privileges such as the right to trade and own property, and protection within the town. This tradition is especially popular in America - a place of Irish immigration to present day. MART are embarking on a 3 city tour with Invite or Reject, an exhibition exploring the preconception of Irish immigrants of the ‘American Dream’ versus the too often reality of rejection. The juxtaposition of the the MART US tour Invite or Reject and the Freedom of the City is poignant. Ireland being a relatively young independent state where ‘freedom’ is a powerful word in its history. The current economic crisis has placed our identity under scrutiny as we question our “Free Status”.

The Freedom to the City show in RUA RED is the ‘Homebase’ for the USA tour. The Artworks here are rooted in our right to stay, and to leave, our right to excel and our right to Freedom of The City!

Exhibiting artists include Debbie Jenkin-son, Nicky Teegan, Colleen Keogh, Eleanor Lawlor, Emanuel Rohss, Emma Wade and Laragh Pittman

Presented by RUA RED as part of the Glitch Festival. The Glitch Festival is supported by South Dublin County Council and the Arts Council.

The UnnameableThe Unnameable is a collaboration between artists Kevin Gaffney (MA Photography, Royal College of Art) & Sally-Anne Kelly (MA Performance Design & Practice, Central Saint Martins) who have been working as a filmmaking duo since 2009. The work is a hybridisation of the artists’ individual practices of performance, photography, video, writing and sculpture.

The Unnameable is an 11 minute artists’ film trading in popular culture of sci-fi, cinema and horror. The unnameable form is in reference to the Devourer from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, whom would decide if a human’s soul goes to heaven or is destroyed. Another motif throughout the film is the double; seen through shadows, reflections and finally in the distorted face of the boy’s plastic twin. The title is a reference to both H.P “Unnameables,” stories that melt in and out of reality and psychosis. Their characters fear what they know and also what eludes them. The Unnameable was filmed on location in Paris and in an abandoned nursery for disabled children in London.

Home NarrativesHome Narratives is an exhibition of photographic work from the artist Emer Gillespie comprised of two main bodies of work. Two Homes is a project that gives candid insight into an alternative domestic partnership, challenging the notion of a traditional nuclear family as the only viable option in today’s society. By using comparative diptychs of seemingly mundane subjects, the viewer is encouraged to consider the ‘family’ in the context of the artist’s child’s two homes.

Picture you, Picture me is a collaborative and explorative portrait project with the artist’s daughter. Directing each other through role-play and instructions, the camera becomes an instrument of amusement and their photo shoots become play sessions. Exploring topics such as child autonomy and the relationship between subject and

photographer it allows the viewer a personal view into this mother/ daughter relationship.

Photography, by its nature as a visual medium, only shows the surface of what are complex relationships and subjective realities. The family is perpetually evolving, an entity in which relationships grow and shrink, develop and dissolve, strengthen and dissipate. As a participant-observer, these images are an examination of appearance and existence, perception and thought through the visual exploration of the artist’s family.

IFI Family at RUA REDThe Irish Film Institute’s monthly family programme continues at RUA RED. Each month we take you on a new cinematic adventure with the best films we can find from around the world. Don’t forget to book your places in advance to make sure that you’re not disappointed.

AlamarThis month’s film comes from Mexico and tells the story of a young boy, Natan, who is going to live with his Italian mother but will spend a holiday with his father, Jorge, before he leaves.

Jorge is a fisherman so he wants to teach Natan how to fish in the beautiful clear waters of a coral reef. Together they embark on sea adventures; Natan learns how to reel in fish, to snorkel, to identify sea creatures and plants, to avoid tempting a crocodile and to befriend a white cattle egret. Part documentary, part fiction, the film reminds us at times of Robinson Crusoe. It’s a kind of paradise but we see that it has hardships too and Natan and Jorge both know that their time here has to come to an end.

How To Train Your Dragon Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, featuring a hero, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a young and brave Viking who lives in a mountainside village near some very unfriendly dragons. Breathing fire and thrashing their tails, the dragons are a huge threat and the villagers have been trying to control them for years.

When the dragon master, Cobber, gets to work, Hiccup is told to stay inside. But he ignores this and attacks the dragons himself. When he follows a wounded one into the forest, he finds a little wounded dragon, Toothless, whom he befriends. They both set out to convince the villagers that there are good dragons too and they can help them win the battle with the bad ones.

Some great action sequences (but a few scary scenes), as the dragons rage over the village in the final battle between good and evil.

Máire teaches him how to love the place, the animals, local colours and landscape. But just when he is beginning to feel a sense of home, tragedy strikes. Tomás has to find the strength to cope with another new situation and in so doing he learns his own courage and understands the love that is all around him.

A warm and touching story about family, friendship and the wonder of nature.

IFI Wild StrawberriesThe Wild Strawberries is an Irish Film Institute Film Club exclusively for Over 55s. We choose the best in cinema from around the world and bring it to you on the last Tues of every month. The screening takes place in our intimate Performance space giving you a unique and comfortable view-ing experience.

Easy VirtueAn English country house between the wars. Colin Firth and Kristen Scott Thomas are the parents of impulsively married John, who brings his new American wife, Larita, home to meet them. This Noel Coward comedy-of-manners reveals a sharp side to the respectable exterior of the Whittaker family, particularly Mrs Whittaker and John’s two sisters, whose snobbishness refuses to countenance that Larita may actually be a good match. Only haunted WW1 veteran, Colonel Whitataker shows any empathy as he potters about his workshop. When a secret from Larita’s past is revealed, any illusion of calm is shattered.

Previously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock, during the silent era in 1928, this version complete with great performances, setting and an eclectic soundtrack is a treat.

Secrets and LiesFollowing the release of Mike Leigh’s latest film, Another Year, it’s an ideal time to watch the last truly great film from this master chronicler of ordinary lives. In a heartbreaking performance, Brenda Blethyn is Cynthia, whose adopted daughter, Hortense, gets in contact. A successful black optometrist of whom Cynthia has no knowledge, she meets with a cold reception. For Cynthia, life is tough enough with her other daughter Roxanne, but her photographer brother (Timothy Spall) slowly begins to uncover the secrets and lies under which they have all lived for so many years.

Wonderful, sympathetic and life-affirming, with scathing one-liners and tear-jerking moments.

A Bunch Of AmateursAiming to bring you a wide range of films throughout the year, our title for this month is a very amusing take on the world of English amateur dramatics. Burt Reynolds is Jefferson Steel, a faded Hollywood star who is conned into playing King Lear in a production for charity. Turns out, though, it’s not in Stratford-upon-Avon but rather, Stratford in Surrey, where they are hoping that the star’s attachment will attract enough media attention to prevent the closure of their company. Needless to say, despite Steel’s fall from fame, he continues to act like a superstar, and demands to be treated as one. Local B&B owner, Mary, (Imelda Staunton) falls for Steel while Derek Jacobi as local thespian Nigel, seethes as his own ambitions are thwarted by the new arrival.

Fun and charming moments abound in this gentle comedy, co-written by Private Eye’s Ian Hislop.

“Our existence is played out as an ongoing dialogue between ourselves and our surroundings”Margaret Whitehead – Physical Literacy (2010)

Louise is continuing her research into our sense of space, place and identity. She is drawing on studies in architecture, evolutionary psychology and physical literacy as well as her experience of working with choreographer Anna Carlisle on Living Architecture, explorations of the body and space based on Rudolf Laban’s work and the geometry of space. This research is forming the basis of a teasing-out of our ever evolving relationship with our environment, which both infects and reflects our movement. You can take a look at some of the emerging themes on the residency blog.

Louise is currently sharing some of the work and creative processes with young choreographers, dance and sound artists with a view to creating some pieces around identified sites and developing a performance project with schools and young dancers.

Having spent time with choreographer mentor Fearghus Ó Conchúir in May observing rehearsals and the performance of “Tabernacle” at the Dublin Dance Festival, Louise is looking forward to working with him in the studio in August and September and will be inviting other dancers and dance artists to engage in a workshop. We can’t wait to view some of the work in RUA RED in late September which will include an exhibition of Fearghus’ video work on Bodies and Buildings. Hope to see you there!
