Obon and Hatsubon ServiceJuly 14th

At the Pasadena Buddhist temple, as at most of the 65 Jodo Shinshu temples in the US, our Hatsubon and Obon services are combined. Obon is the oldest continuous service in Buddhist tradition and started about 2,500 years ago in India.

Obon is a memorial service in which we remem-ber and honor all of our deceased loved ones. Hat-subon is a special service for everyone that has passed away since Obon in 2018. Family members of those whose lives we are celebrat-ing are asked to light a candle and burn incense during this special service. Rev. Kenji Akahoshi, Buddhist Temple of San Diego, will be out guest speaker.

Rev. Gibbs will also meet your family at the cemetery to conduct a grave-side service during the month of July. Just call Sensei and make arrangements for a special way to acknowledge your loved one.

Pleaae join us for our combined Obon and Hatsubon service, the BWA will provide light refreshments after the service.

It is unseasonably warm as I write this. As you know, I grew up in Fresno, so this current little heat wave is not too challenging for me to live through. However, it isn’t that I like weather above 90 degrees. I can’t go outside and sincerely say, “What great weath-er!” Sometimes it is more honest to say things like, “It’s not too bad. I can bear it.” Yet it was just a few days ago I was positively appreciating the nice temperate weather with clear skies that we had just been having here in Pasadena.

Appreciation” is an interesting concept, because we can appreci-ate something as good, which is the usual meaning. But we can also appreciate the wrongness of the bad. For example, I could say that I appreciate what white supremacism stands for, and go on to say that “it stands for utter nonsense, selfishness and oppression like all forms of racism do.”

We must appreciate our lives, day to day. It is what we add. The rocks do not express enjoyment of a temperate day. At least not in any way that we can understand. Our positive appreciation of the good that there is in our lives can spark a similar enjoyment of the moment in those we associate with.

An aphorism attributed to the current Dalai Lama is, “Be kind whenever it is possible. It is always possible.” I don’t know if he said this, but it is not really true. I would tell others and myself, “Be kind whenever it is possible. It is often possible.” I don’t need to hedge on appreciation though. Please may we slow down enough to appreciate our lives. It is almost always possible.

Our temple offers various opportunities to slow down and ap-preciate life together. Please continue attending Sunday services when it is not too much trouble. Consider attending a study class or meditation session or Tai Chi class. Just drop in one two times.

The third weekend in July we will again present our Obon fes-tival. Most of you reading this will be working very hard on this event. Some of you are already busy with preparations as I write this. Presidents’ MessageIt is Obon season again, the weather has started to get quite warm

and we have turned the air conditioning on at the temple during the week! We have many special activities scheduled in June as a lead up to the Obon service and festivities.

Eight members of our sangha attended the recent Southern Dis-trict Conference. We had the opportunity to listen to a message from Rev. Mas Kodani (retired) and Bishop Umezu. We also chanted as a very unified sangha with Rev. Sekiya of Gardena Buddhist Church. The chanting was quite remarkable to hear and to participate in. Rev. Mas said that chanting is the “sound of being connected” to the others and to Amida. This is the message I wanted to share with you.

The Gomonshu will be visiting all the temples including ours, information on page 5 of this Hikari and on the wbsite.

We appreciate all your monetary donations, but we really need for everyone that is able, to come out and help us during the festival. We can use people to help monitor the silent auction, make change and take orders at our booth areas, help with dish washing, super-vise the parking area, help serve food, etc., etc., etc. Being part of the sangha is not only listening to the dharma but is also about working together and sharing time with each other. You will be ap-proached to volunteer, please say “yes”. If you are not available July 20 & 21, we can use your help the week prior for booth set-up and food preparation. After the festival we can use help with clean-up. June 29th we are having an all temple clean-up (Omigaki). We meet from 9:00 am – noon. Lunch will be served, pot luck sides are gra-ciously accepted. We are very lucky here at PBT to have the SOGs helping to maintain the property, but we need help with the dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, raking, etc. We used to have a system for monthly clean-up by tobans. But this system did not work because of the lack of participating. We are only asking for 2 mornings a year to help with clean-up. Please make time. We would love to see you!

Raffle tickets have been mailed out, if you did not receive them, please let sensei know. We have an unexpected expense this month and the revenue from the raffle tickets will help offset the expendi-ture of a new refrigerator. Everyone was sent 10 tickets at $5 each. If you can sell more, please ask and we will get the tickets to you! Our prizes are all monetary … something everyone can use!

Gassho, Jeannie Toshima

Hello, my name is Ren Gibbs. I am currently in the 8th grade and am a proud Sangha Teen at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple. During the last week of April, on the 27th (Saturday), I attended/hosted a Sangha Teen event at the Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. I, along with Panther and Mikala from Pasadena, teamed up with 9 of the Nishi Sangha teens to make the event as exciting and fun as possible. There were many activities at the event, each member of the team working together to make each and every one of them special.

At this opportunity, I would like to thank the Nishi Sangha Teens and families for co-hosting the event. I would also like to thank our own family members for their guidance and support. My sincere appreciation goes to the Pasadena SOGS, the Sons Of Gardeners, for their generous donation. It was great to meet new people and make friends, I look forward to the next event! Photos from this event can be found on the website under Youth Groups)

June and July are very busy months for our group: June 29th is Omigaki and General Clean Up and WE NEED YOUR HELP! The week leading up to our

Obon (July 20 and 21) includes preparation sessions for Food Court sale items including: Tofu Salad; Matsuri Kyuri Sticks; and Chirashi Gohan. Unfortunately, we have reached the point where we do not have sufficient labor to make Makizushi and inarizushi. This year we will be selling our delicious Chirashi on both Saturday and Sunday, but will not be making Makizushi and Inarizushi. BWA will also help prepare veggies for the temple’s Beef Chow Mein.

I’d also like to thank our members who came out to help set-up, clean-up and assist customers for our Yukata and Accessories Pop-up Boutique on June 1st. It was very well attended!

I look forward to seeing you at Omigaki and at our Obon! If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 818.279.3145.

That same evening there will be a banquet in his honor at the Quiet Cannon. from 6:00 PM. Cost is $65/adult and $25/children. Dinner names need to be submitted by August 5.

Pasadena’s OBON Festival July 20 & 21Obon is a special time when we remember and honor our ancestors and

friends who have gone to the Pure Land. One “tradition” we have is the Bon Odori ...we dance

for the joy of being alive and to dance in memory and honor of the dead. If our minds and hearts are full of remembrance, we dance for joy, not to show-off.

Every temple in Southern District will basically have the same dances, so you can learn the dance at any of the So District temples. Pasadena will have Bon Odori dance practice on Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 7:00 - 8:00PM in the parking lot. First lesson will be on June 27th. Bring kachi-kachi and tenugui (long towel).

Check out the Obon schedule and “represent” Pasadena at the other temple obons (see website for schedule).

We can use all sangha member’s help with preparation, working in a booth, and helping around the event. Please come when you can and we will find a place for you to help out.

If you have “nice” or “new” items for the Silent Auction or for the regular raffle, please drop them off in the Temple office. Please make sure to leave your name and contact information with your item. Items that we auction are: Gift Cards, Antiques (in good condition), baskets of toys, tickets to sporting events and Vacations. Raffle prizes can be plants, food items, or gift cards. Monetary donations are welcome to help purchase supplies for the Obon.

Your dana is appreciated.

Obon RaffleMail in or drop off your raffle ticket stub with your check ... we will be doing a “Double-Dip” raffle drawing again this year. Basically, we will start drawing ticket stubs for prizes during the Obon

festival and if you win something, we will put your stub back inside the ticket-bin so you can win something again! Winner need not be present to win the “big” prizes. If you need more tickets, just contact Rev. Gibbs, Jeannie Toshima or Gerry Ito.
