Malstrom Air Force Base personnel were in Glasgow Monday to make a special visit to the Valley County Pioneer Museum. Not for a tour of the facility, but to evaluate some old military shells that have been on display for years. It all began when Tim Romo, a National Guardsman, toured the museum, looked at the shells and brought it up to his mother, Shelly Romo, whether these shells had ever been examined to determine whether they were live or not. After much discussion by Pioneer Museum staff, nobody could even pin a date on just how long these shells had been there, let alone whether they had ever been deemed inert. For safetys sake, Dave Pippin immediately went to work on finding someone who could examine the rounds to determine if they were still explosive. After several phone calls, he found out the only place in Montana that has trained professionals to do this is at Malstrom Air Force Base. Malstom sent two explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians who are specially trained to deal with the construction, deployment, disarmament, and disposal of high explosive munitions. Upon their arrival, the officers

ordered everyone in the museum to be evacuated at around 2:00 p.m., and they began hauling equipment inside to begin their evaluation of the military rounds,

one of them being a five-inch shell (approximately 30 inches long) and a pair of 25 millimeter anti-aircraft artillery shells.

Airman Giansanti starts packing equipment into the Valley County Pioneer Museum to begin an hours-long investigation into the heavy artillery rounds that have been on display for who knows how long.

  • First step in their evaluation was to do ex-rays, but after that we have no clue as to what the following procedures were because we were all evacuated! (And besides that, no photos are allowed to exactly what their procedures are.) What they discovered was very interesting: The two 25 mm artillery shells were highly suspected to be live ammo and were going to be taken back to Malstrom to be detonated (Kaboom, no more 25 mm shells to view at Pioneer Museum), but were then determined to be safe at around 9:00 this morning. Yeah, the story keeps getting better all the time, Dave said, explaining that it turns out these are

the museum, Dave was happy to report. The big five-inch shell is just as interesting, if not more so. With the description left by whoever donated the shell to the museum reading, ARTILLERY SHELL WWI APPEARS TO BE THE FAMOUS FRENCH 115 MM, it did look like it could have been just that. If so, these babies might possibly contain highly lethal mustard gas. However, upon checking the weight of the shell, it threw the EOD techs for a loop. Nothing matched up with any of their specs. Turns out that prior to finding a home in the Pioneer Museum, someone had stuffed cue balls (yes, those things you find on

Malstrom Team continued from page 2

a pool table besides beer stains) inside the casing in an attempt to bring the weight of the shell back up to its close proximity. What they also discovered is that this round is still potentially dangerous as it hadnt been

cleaned out thoroughly and there is still quite a bit of powder in it. It also turns out that it is a five-

inch naval round from the early stages of World War II.

The notes found in the Japanese rounds were issued by the United States Government dated July 22nd, 1943, before World War II had ended.

Sergeant Willson and Airman Giansanti took it back to Malstrom today to clean it. Good news for the museum, once they have it properly cleaned, it can return to Valley County. Hats off to them, they came here and did some excellent work to ensure our museum is safe, Dave noted. We owe a big THANK YOU to Malstrom Air Force Base.

Some nasty storms last night Hinsdale got hammered by hail and heavy rains and up north it was no picnic as the storm that wreaked havoc in Hinsdale headed northwest. Darryl Fuhrman reported that while Opheim didnt get hail, they did get 2 1/4 inches of rain and still pouring at 10:00 this morning. Glentana had golf-ball-sized hail while Pete Dighans lost all the windows on the west side of his house. Richland had 2 3/4 inches and still a-coming. Peas were flattened and the pastures look like someone took a lawnmower to them, Daryl said.

Three blondes were all applying for the last available position on the Texas Highway Patrol.

The detective conducting the interview looked at the three of them and said, So yall want to be cops, huh?

    The blondes all nodded.

The detective got up, opened a file drawer, and pulled out a folder.

Sitting back down, he opened it, pulled out a picture, and said, To be a detective, you have to be able to detect.

You must be able to notice things such as distinguishing features and oddities like scars and so forth.

So saying, he stuck the photo in the face of the first blonde and withdrew it after about two seconds. Now, he said, did you noticeany distinguishing features about this man?

    The blonde immediately said,

Yes, I did. He has only one eye!

The detective shook his head and said, Of course he has only one eye in this picture! Its a profile of his face!

    Youre dismissed!

The first blonde hung her head and walked out of the office.

The detective then turned to the second blonde, stuck the photo in her face for two seconds, pulled it back, and said,

What about you? Notice anything unusual or Outstanding about this man?

Yes! He only has one ear!

The detective put his head in his hands and exclaimed, Didnt you hear what I just told the other lady? This is a profile of the mansface! Of course you can only see one ear!

    Youre excused too!

The second blonde sheepishly walked out of the office.

The detective turned his attention to the third and last blonde and said, This is probably a waste of time,
